Smart Balance Products Not a SMART CHOICE for Palm Oil – CALL FOR BOYCOTT!

Noticed this product in my company’s employee common kitchen.  Looked at the ingredients.  Of course it contains palm oil.  Off went my usual palm oil email to the company, demanding to know from where they source it.

I didn’t get a response for a week or two.  I wrote again – this time twice in the same 5 minutes.  I received a response rather quickly.  Here it is:

After recently looking at all the horses and burros available for adoption in the short-term holding pens via the BLM Internet Adoption auction, many of them have suffered more that two freezing winters without out shelter from the wind in winter or two sweltering hot summers without shade, with nothing to do as well. Even though the wild horses and burros are supposed to be protected by BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program, so far all we’ve seen is BLM WH&B program jump through hoops for the cattle ranchers and ignores every request or offer of help by the public to construct some shelter for the horses from the sun and wind, built in the corrals, free of charge. Sure would be appreciated if HSUS would speak up about the lack of  a CAWP.   ~admin

Global consumption of animal protein—milk, eggs, meat, and fish—is likely to rise 60 to 70 percent by mid-century. But producing food animals already eats up three-quarters of all agricultural land, and it threatens to empty the seas for fishmeal. Meanwhile, pig and poultry operations in particular have become notorious for polluting the surrounding countryside with manure.

What’s the answer? Eating less meat can help, especially in meat-gorged nations like the United States, but it isn’t going to make these problems go away. Much of the increased demand will come from population growth and from greater wealth in protein-starved developing nations.

Instead, insects may be the answer. We’re not talking about direct consumption as human food, the perennial delight of horror-stricken journalists. The truth is that most people are never going to want to throw a housefly burger on the grill. But insects could just be the perfect feed for livestock.

WASHINGTON – The Army says it will soon notify 550 majors that they must leave the service by next spring as part of a budget-driven downsizing of the service.

Some of those soldiers will get the bad news while they are on the front lines in Afghanistan.

Gen. John Campbell says notifying troops on the warfront that they are out of a job is difficult. But he says some could join the National Guard or the Army Reserve.

“California wildlife officials are asking the public to help watch for sick waterfowl that may be suffering because of the drought. Avian botulism is more likely to spread when birds cluster in small pockets of water. Already, hundreds of dead birds have been reported at three locations across the state, including the canal that bisects Sacramento’s Pocket neighborhood.

“Add another casualty to California’s prolonged and punishing drought: Wildlife officials warned this week that dry conditions in the state’s Central Valley could have a devastating effect on North American waterfowl.

“The Central Valley is recognized as the most important resting and wintering ground on the Pacific Flyway, a global migratory path for millions of ducks, geese and other birds. About 5 million waterfowl spend the winter on state and federal wildlife refuge areas and flooded rice fields in the Central Valley each winter.

The “Great California Bull Run” has officially been cancelled! The Los Angeles County Fire Department refused to grant a permit for the event, citing violations of public safety standards.

This is part of a larger series of events, with two previous Great Bull Runs in California being cancelled before hand. The cruelty and riskiness of these events lead to a lawsuit by PETA and the Animal Legal Defense Fund against the Great Bull Run and the Lone Star Rodeo Company in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The lawsuit is aimed at ending bull runs in California and is the first case to be filed to stop these events.

These events are violations California’s anti-cruelty and Unfair Competition laws as the organizers of the events send over 30 panicking bulls, each of them weighing in at almost a ton, down a narrow track. The bulls can run up to 35…
