Dear Kitty. Some blog

This video is called Life of Giant Pandas – Full Documentary.

From Associated Press today:

China’s latest survey finds increase in wild giant pandas

BEIJING — Wild giant pandas in China are doing well.

The latest census by China’s State Forestry Administration shows the panda population has grown by 268 to a total of 1,864 since the last survey ending in 2003.

Nearly three quarters of the pandas live in the southwestern province of Sichuan. The remaining pandas have been found in the neighboring Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.

“The rise in the population of wild giant pandas is a victory for conservation and definitely one to celebrate,” said Ginette Hemley, senior vice president of wildlife conservation for World Wildlife Fund.

Hemley credited efforts by the Chinese government for the increase. The survey shows 1,246 wild giant pandas live within nature reserves. There are 67 panda reserves…

Killing Echo: The “Mistaken Identity” Excuse, Part One

Howling For Justice

Echo Grand-Canyon NPS

Echo (Courtesy NPS)

February 27, 2015

It’s been a little over two months since Echo was shot dead by a coyote “hunter”. Her identity was confirmed by DNA analysis of her recovered scat, since she evaded all attempts of capture, making her one smart little wolf. I think Echo should have been called Miracle because it certainly was a miracle she managed to traverse the kill zone of the Northern Rockies and make it to the Grandest of all Canyons. She was the first wolf to set paw there in 70 years. Unfortunately she was not able to evade a bullet and so what could have been a new chapter in wolf recovery turned out to be a sad tale of loss. And the loss was huge. Echo defied the odds. She defied the USFWS who repeatedly said, no gray wolves in  Grand Canyon National Park. But Echo made it…

Water fluoridation linked to higher rates of underactive thyroid
– The clear association found in our analyses between fluoride levels in drinking water and variations in hypothyroidism prevalence appears to confirm findings in earlier studies that ingestion of fluoride affects thyroid function. The fact that the difference is significant suggests that there is substantial cause for public health concern.

Pig Escapes Farm, Appears to “Pray” at Buddhist Temple – MFABlog.org

Life or Lunch?

There’s no question that farmed animals, like all other sentient beings, want to live. We’ve reported on countless accounts of animals escaping from slaughterhouses or jumping from transport trucks.

This week we came across this devastating story from China about a pig who escaped a farm and made her way to a Buddhist temple.

What makes this story so unique is that the pig kneeled down and appeared to be praying in front of the temple. This sparked a flurry on Chinese social media of people saying the pig was on a pilgrimage. In reality, this poor animal was probably exhausted from running for her life.

Sadly, she was slaughtered just after being recaptured by her owner.

Pigs are sensitive and friendly animals just like the dogs and cats we love at home. They’re also known for being highly intelligent. But instead of treating them kindly, the meat…

Animals = He/She or It?

Alexandra´s Animal Awareness Blog

What looks like a grammatical question is in reality a question of life in freedom or in captivity. As long as animals are treated as things in court it is extremely difficult to have the law support animal welfare. It remains more or less good will of the human being who owns an animal if he or she wants this animal to live a pleasant or horrific life.

There is a way out of this conundrum, though. Lawyers in several countries have started to think of ways how to change the law in favor of non-human beings. In the US, a lawsuit is being presented in the name of a chimpanzee.

Once the legal status of animals will habe been changed chances will become unequivocally better to end their misery in many prison-lie situations.

EWG’s Dirty Dozen Report Lists The Most Pesticide-Heavy Fruits And Veggies Of 2015

Emilio Cogliani

One of the most common reasons to eat more organic produce is to avoid harmful chemicals used in growing your food. Pesticides have been linked to developmental problems in children, and may act as carcinogens or throw off the endocrine system, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Scary stuff!

To help consumers make the safest choices, nonprofit advocacy agency the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has once again released its list of the most pesticide-contaminated produce. The Dirty Dozen, part of the EWG’s yearly Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce, is compiled from U.S. Department of Agriculture pesticide residue data on 48 fruits and veggies. About two-thirds of the produce samples test positive, and apples top the ranking for the fifth year in a row.

“The bottom line is people do not want to eat pesticides with their fruits and vegetables,” Ken Cook, the EWG’s president…

The “Wolf Depredation” Scam Continues and Your Stories Wanted

This is "tradition" and "heritage" in Wisconsin. This is “tradition” and “heritage” in Wisconsin.

Lately this blog has been gaining a significant crop of new readers and wildlife advocates that have been elated to have found a source that will actually report the thing that I do. I am both proud and humbled at the positive feedback I am getting for publishing this blog. I am willing to bring to light the issues and opinions that many of us harbor but are afraid to put out there. One of the best things about increased readership of the blog is that wildlife advocates and average citizens from Northern Wisconsin finally feel that they have an outlet to express their frustrations and disdain over what is essentially the extremist hunting group and hounder based anarchy that the Wisconsin DNR turns a blind eye to or even encourages. As a follow up to my blog post yesterday about livestock interests…

SAW FISH IN THE ABACO MARLS? NO SURPRISE. SAW A SAWFISH? AWESOME!

ROLLING HARBOUR ABACO

Pristis_pectinata _Georgia_Aquarium_ Diliff Wiki

SAW FISH IN THE ABACO MARLS? NO SURPRISE. SAW A SAWFISH? AWESOME!

Exactly a year ago, an extraordinary find was made out on the Abaco Marls. Almost disguised against the pale mud under the low water was the first sawfish reported for the Marls. This fish is not merely a rarity in the Northern Bahamas: all species of sawfishes worldwide are IUCN listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered.

Here is an account of the discovery reported by FRIENDS OF THE ENVIRONMENT: “On a recent fishing trip in the Marls with local guide Justin Sands, Sam and Jacque Cannon had an exciting encounter. As Justin was poling the flats, with Sam on the bow searching for bonefish, Jacque spotted a Sawfish! Jacque and Justin quickly forgot about Sam and his efforts to catch a bonefish and turned their focus to the Sawfish. This is a very rare…
