Man seeks veteran’s family to return lost WWII regalia, including Bronze Star

ROY, Utah — A Utah man is searching for the family of a World War II hero.

Jim Thorpe has held onto a casket flag and war medals for nearly a year. He’s hoping he can finally return them to Thomas D. Walker’s family.

Walker was a World War II hero, a brave soldier in the Pacific Theater. He was honored for his conduct in the military and heroism in battle.

“He was obviously someone special that did something to earn those medals,” Thorpe told KSTU sitting on his porch on Memorial Day.

A Purple Heart and Bronze Star engraved with his name are among the five medals in a shadow box. Above them, a folded flag once draped over a casket. In front, a black and white picture of a helmeted young man holding a mortar.

“I feel it belongs with the family,” Thorpe said.

Thorpe never knew Thomas D. Walker. He doesn’t know where he lived or even which branch of the military he served. But in his possession, symbols of Walker’s courage and character.

“I can’t imagine this isn’t missed,” Thorpe said. “Somebody knows this is missing.”

It was found dirty and forgotten, in the back of the closet of a 31st Street Ogden apartment. Thorpe’s friend discovered it and gave it to him last summer.

The grandson of two WWII veterans contacted the US military and searched online for the soldier’s family.

“Honestly, I figured somebody would claim it right away. I didn’t think that I’d be holding onto it for so long,” Thorpe said.

The common name of Thomas Walker overwhelmed Thorpe while searching among 16 million WWII American soldiers.

In the middle of cancer treatment himself, Thorpe discovered two possible connections: one in Oregon, and another in Illinois. While nothing is concrete yet, Thorpe’s not giving up.

“I’d like to learn more about him. He’s been with me for a minute but I would like to get him back to his family. That’s the ultimate goal,” he said.

If you have information on Thomas D. Walker, Thorpe can be contacted through britneythorpe34@gmail.com.

“Airway, Breathing and Circulation” – Katzenworld

Knowing your ABC’s for pets can help owners stabilise a pet in an emergency situation.

Despite our best efforts to protect our pets, accidents can and do happen. In serious cases, knowing what to do in an emergency can be the difference between life and death.

Vet charity PDSA offers resources and courses in Pet First Aid across the UK to help owners, pet business owners and animal-lovers safely deliver first aid to pets in an emergency, until they can get them to a vet.

PDSA Vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan says, “Accidents can happen at any time and require speedy action. Many people have a basic understanding of first aid for humans but when it comes to pets, there’s less awareness. In many emergency scenarios, a vet isn’t likely to be first on scene, so it’s important to know what to do.”

There are 3 steps to follow: Prepare, Recognise and Act. Always prepare for an emergency, this could help save a pet’s life.

“Taking some basic precautions can mean you have the information and tools you need to stop things from becoming more serious,” says Olivia.

Always have access to your vet’s name, address and telephone number, and keep a pen and paper handy for any instructions they give you.

Try to be vigilant and take action if you are concerned about your pet. When you recognise any concerning symptoms, it is important to consider this as a pet emergency.

Olivia added, “Having difficulty breathing, collapsing, seizures or bleeding are all emergencies. Other problems, such as severe vomiting and diarrhoea or not being able to pass any urine for over 24 hours, could also be a potential emergency, so always get in touch with your vet practice if you’re not sure.”

As soon as you recognise that you have an emergency, ensure you call your vet. They can give you advice and, if you’re heading straight there due to an emergency situation, they can prepare while you are en-route to the surgery.

You may need to act and administer pet first aid if a pet becomes unconscious or unresponsive. The key is to remain calm and don’t panic. Check their ‘ABC’ vital signs:

A – Check the Airway is clear. Pull their tongue forward and check there is nothing stuck in the throat.

B – Check they are Breathing. Look at their chest to see if it’s moving and listen over their nose or mouth for airflow. If they’re not breathing, immediately check for a heartbeat.

C – Check their Circulation. Put your hand on their chest just behind their elbow. Do they have a heartbeat?

If you are sure there is no breathing or heartbeat, you may need to perform CPR. Always call for help before starting CPR. PDSA offers free Pet First Aid courses nationally, and owners can also download a free copy of the charity’s pet first aid guide. Just visit http://www.pdsa.org.uk/firstaid.

PDSA is the UK’s leading vet charity. We’re on a mission to improve pet wellbeing through prevention, education and treatment. Support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery helps us reach even more pet owners with vital advice and information. http://www.pdsa.org.uk

Family of bears climb into man’s car and try to ‘steal’ it

Chad Morris, a barber from Kentucky, was on a holiday with his family in Gatlinburg, Tennessee when he and his mother witnessed a shocking incident involving bears. He was inside the house when he heard his mother’s scream.

Worried about his mom, he rushed outside to see what all the screaming was about only to be shocked by what he saw. In the driveway where his car was parked, a family of bears was climbing into his car, trying to steal it.

Chad Morris

“As soon as I saw them they were walking up to my car and the three cubs hopped in,” said Morris. As the three little bears were playing and rolling around Morris’ car, the mother bear was watching nearby.

Though the mother bear and her children were aware that Morris and his parents were watching them from afar, they just ignored their presence and continued playing in the car, leaning out its windows and messing around anything they could find inside.

Chad Morris

Morris said, “They saw us standing around taking pictures, but they never bothered us.”

Shortly, the bear cubs realized the car would not move and it’s not going anywhere. They finally gave up on exploring things inside and carefully found their way out. Surprisingly, they also tried to maneuver the other car parked in the area.

“They crawled out of the windows and two of them stood up next to my mom and dad’s car, but their windows were up. After five more minutes of walking around the cars they went back down the mountain together, off in the woods,” Morris recounted.”

Chad Morris

Once the naughty cubs got out of the driveway, Morris rushed to check his car for any damage. He was so shocked that his car was still perfectly fine after being invaded by three boisterous bears. “They tore a chunk out of the leather on the driver’s seat by the headrest, and left scratches in a few spots on the interior. One bit down into my protein shake top, and my son’s football has claw marks on it,” Morris added.

After this incident, Morris remembered how much he wanted to see a bear while he was in Tennessee. He even told his friends it is one of his goals. Morris thought the heavens were so quick in granting his wish and he did not only see one but four bears.

He stated, I was telling my friends, I want to see a bear, I want to see a bear you know? Been lifting weights a little bit, want to see a bear, tussle with a bear and it was like well, you get four on one, now what do you wanna do big boy? And I was like nah, I’ll pass.”

Chad Morris

Morris found it hard to move on from this shocking event and because he managed to capture clear and remarkable photos of the incident, he posted them on Facebook and wrote about the bears trying to ransack his car. According to Morris, you can see where the bear too a chunk out of the seat. Of course my cup was right in the middle and that’s where they got a hold of the cup.”

Remember the quote “be careful what you wish for?” This is what seems to have happened with Morris and even though the bears played around inside his car, he is still thankful that his car was not damaged and happy to see actual bears during his vacation. Apparently, for Morris and his family, this shocking event was something they would not forget for the rest of their lives.

Feel Good Sunday: ~ Memorial Day ~ War Animals From Horses to Glowworms: 7 Incredible Facts

Straight from the Horse's Heart

Source: History.com

“This weekend we honor those who gave the ultimate gift to keep us safe, free and prosperous while living in the greatest country on the planet, the United States of America. To those who died for our well being we bend a knee and thank them all, regardless of their race, religion or species.  God bless you each and every one.!” ~ R.T.

Today we explore fascinating stories about the important military contributions of horses and other animals throughout history.

1. World War I, in which 10 million soldiers died, also resulted in the deaths of 8 million military horses

Horses of WarWhether pulling chariots, transporting equipment or carrying people to battle, the horse has seen more action in wars than any other animal; in fact, the earliest equine training manual dates back to 1350 B.C. Southern women scattered spring flowers on graves of both northern Union and southern Confederate soldiers of the Civil War in which over a half-million died. Many places claimed to have held the original Memorial Day, such as:

  • Warrenton, Virginia
  • Columbus, Georgia
  • Savannah, Georgia
  • Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
  • Boalsburg, Pennsylvania
  • Waterloo, New York

One such place was Charleston, South Carolina, where a mass grave was uncovered of 257 Union soldiers who had died in a prison camp. On May 1, 1865, former slaves organized a parade, led by 2,800 singing black children, and reburied the soldiers with honor as an act of reparation and gratitude for their ultimate sacrifice which gave slaves freedom.

In 1868, General John A. Logan, commander of the Civil War veterans’ organization “The Grand Army of the Republic,” called for a Decoration Day to be observed annually on May 30.

In my youth, the holiday we celebrate this weekend was known as Decoration Day, which started in 1861 when a bouquet was placed on a Civil War veteran’s grave and continued as America paid homage and tribute to the men and women who paid the ultimate price in defense of America by “decorating” or placing flowers on the graves of fallen heroes.

The name was changed to Memorial Day and became a federal holiday in 1971.

America has lost over one million in our combined wars, and, by whatever name, it is appropriate and noble that we should set aside a day to honor their memory, their service and their sacrifice.

Memorial Day: In Honor of American Patriots Special Edition · May 27, 2019

Truth2Freedom's Blog

“Our obligations to our country never cease but with our lives.” —John Adams

Patriots, today is the 151st anniversary of the first Decorations Day, now Memorial Day remembrance, when Congressman (and later President) James Garfield addressed more than 5,000 families of fallen military personnel at Arlington Cemetery. We set aside Memorial Day to honor the service and sacrifice of generations of our Armed Forces Patriots who perished in battle (and more broadly all Veterans now departed) — those who “supported and defended” with honor the American Liberty enshrined in our Constitution.

Accordingly, I invite you to read our tribute to fallen American Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen.

On Memorial Day, flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, your local time. Please join Patriots honoring veterans across our great nation by observing a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. local time for remembrance and…

Petition: They cut the claws of a lioness to play with tourists, rescue her!

sosvox.org

We can not continue to allow these abuses in the sight of everyone and that nobody does anything. This lioness was MUTILATED so that some people could approach her to play. This madness happened in the zoo of the Palestinian city of Rafah, a place that should be closed and its animals taken to sanctuaries, because they surely have done similar things with other animals.

Let’s do something, these places can not be anyone’s land to do what they want with animals, there are international laws, and if there are not there should be. Please, ask the Government of Israel to rescue the animals of that zoo and take them to a sanctuary or something similar where they can live happily without being mistreated.

Petition: Set Term Limits for U.S. Representatives and Senators

change.org
Corruption is rampant in Washington DC. One of the biggest reasons this is the case is because lifetime politicians have become power brokers, making them the beneficiaries of favors, payoffs, and under-the-table deals. They live in a perpetual state of campaigning rather than focusing on addressing the problems that face Americans.

Term limits were never included in the Constitution because it was expected by the founders that those serving as our representatives in the legislative branch would do so as a duty to be fulfilled rather than a luxurious position of excess. They did not anticipate the electoral benefits of incumbents, nor did the realize the two-party system would polarize the nation to the point that positions could be made essentially permanent.

Power should not be accumulated over the length of a long career. It should be earned through action and earnestly held for a brief period of time. Today, too much power is consolidated in Washington DC, partially as a result of the extended lengths in which our representatives enjoy their tenure.

Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate should be there because they want to serve their country, not because they enjoy being part of the DC Country Club. Term limits are very popular among the people, but Capitol Hill continues to ignore our will by failing to address it. Why should they? Only they can be hurt by it, and it does not behoove them to hurt themselves.

Instead, they continue hurting us.

We demand Congress immediately put together legislation that spells out term limits for themselves. Americans need to know who is willing to suppress their own power for the sake of the nation. This can only happen by bringing legislation to the floor.

Second PETITION: Justice for Bear Pelted with Stones who Fell to Its Death

ladyfreethinker.org
Image Credit: Twitter – Mahmood Ah Shah

PETITION TARGET: Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Harsh Vardhan.

After a young brown bear wandered into a village in India’s Jammu and Kashmir state, locals terrorized, chased and pelted the animal with stones before the terrified bear fell 50 feet into a river to die, according to reports.

Smartphone footage from earlier in the day shows the panicked bear trying to flee from a mob of locals. The bear becomes painfully tangled in barbed wire, before pulling free and escaping.

Another video shared on Twitter shows the bear desperately clinging to the side of a steep mountain while people throw rocks at the petrified animal. One rock hits the bear on the head, causing the bear to lose balance and fall, tumbling and crashing down the cliff before disappearing into a river as the crowd cheers.

Wildlife conflict is an ongoing problem in India, as human populations grow and destroy precious habitat. This heartbreaking incident highlights the need to increase protections for the critically endangered brown bears in the country, along with other species at risk.

Sign this petition urging India’s Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to not only find and prosecute all involved, but to increase education for villagers on how to deal with wild animal conflicts, so no more creatures suffer a similar fate to this bear.

Hundreds of Sunscreens Don’t Work or Have Unsafe Ingredients, Annual Review Finds

ecowatch.com
Sam Nickerson

Summer is fast approaching, which means it’s time to stock up on sunscreen to ward off the harmful effects of sun exposure. Not all sunscreens are created equally, however.

The nonprofit Environmental Working Group released its 13th annual Guide to Sunscreens this month, which rated the safety and effectiveness of more than 1,300 sun protection products on the market. It found that two-thirds of those products either contained chemicals the Food and Drug Administration says could be potentially harmful or provide inferior protection from the sun.

EWG experts found that only 40 percent of the products it examined — including sunscreens, moisturizers and lip balms — have active ingredients that meet draft safety regulations developed by the FDA in February.

According to the FDA, just two of the 16 common active ingredients in most sunscreens, zinc and titanium oxides, have been tested enough to show they are safe and effective. Another two ingredients, PABA and trolamine salicylate, were found to be unsafe according to the proposed standards, while the remaining 12 did not have enough data for the FDA to indicate whether or not they worked and could be considered safe.

“The good news is that the FDA has reaffirmed what EWG has advocated for 13 years: Based on the best current science, the safest and most effective sunscreen active ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide,” said Nneka Leiba, director of EWG’s Healthy Living Science program, in a press release. “It’s long past time that the chemicals used in sunscreens were tested to show that they will not harm our health.”

Many of the chemical ingredients were not tested enough because they had been grandfathered in when the FDA set more rigorous testing regulations in the 1970s, Time reported, as the belief then was that creams, lotions and sprays did not penetrate deep enough beyond the surface of the skin. A recent FDA study, however, confirmed that common sunscreen ingredients avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene and ecamsule all end up in the bloodstream at levels beyond the threshold for further testing.

Oxybenzone is an allergen and potential endocrine disruptor that can have adverse effects on human growth, development and reproduction, USA Today reported, and could be damaging coral reefs. Oxybenzone was found in more than 60 percent of the sunscreens reviewed by the EWG.

Time also reported that sunscreen manufacturers have put stronger chemicals in their products in response to skin cancer concerns or increased listed sun protection factor (SPF) values, while health experts have suggested more frequent use of these sunscreens, potentially increasing the likelihood the chemicals are absorbed.

Legislation has since been enacted to improve the FDA review process, and the EWG supports an FDA proposal to limit SPF ratings, as research has not shown that higher SPF ratings provide additional protection from all ultraviolet rays. If anything, the EWG says, SPF values greater than 50+ provide a false sense of security leading to increased exposure.

The EWG’s 2019 sunscreen guide did provide some good news: more than 260 sunscreens meet its safety guidelines and would also meet the FDA’s proposed standards. The full list of those products is on the EWG website.

Another Mississippi rise threatens to trigger Morganza Spillway opening

The Morganza Spillway is seen with a few bays open on Sunday morning May 15, 2011 in Batchelor, La. The Army Corps of Engineers could open the spillway again — for the third time in its history — on June 2 because of rising water on the Mississippi River.

By Mark Schleifstein, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

Heavy rains expected in the Midwest portion of the Mississippi River Valley during the next week have prompted Army Corps of Engineers officials to warn interests within the Morganza Floodway portion of the Atchafalaya River Basin that the Morganza Spillway structure could be opened as soon as June 2.

More than 5 inches of rain is expected to fall across parts of Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa over the next seven days, according to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center.

The river will crest at 62 feet on June 6 at Red River Landing, only a foot and a half below that location’s all-time high crest, according to Wednesday’s forecast by the weather service’s Lower Mississippi River Forecast Center, based in Slidell.

Red River Landing is only about 16 miles above the Morganza Spillway.VSB5DDMSMJC3PESOZF2ZYUB7JQ

Forecast rainfall in the Midwest could total more than 5 inches during the next seven days, according to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center.

Forecast rainfall in the Midwest could total more than 5 inches during the next seven days, according to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center.

Red River Landing is one of several locations along the river where records have been set or about to be set for the number of days above flood stage. At Red River, the record is 152 days, set in 1927, the year of the great Mississippi River Flood. On Wednesday, the location had seen 146 days above flood stage this year.6ecekz6rhfea5jxw3rtwxkve241670628639.jpg

This chart shows how many days various locations have seen river heights above official flood stages, and how that compares to record flood stage years.

This chart shows how many days various locations have seen river heights above official flood stages, and how that compares to record flood stage years.

The forecast also calls for the river to remain at 16.7 feet at the Carrollton Gage in New Orleans through June 19, well into the beginning of the 2019 hurricane season. Water heights aren’t predicted to rise in New Orleans because the corps already has opened a number of bays in the Bonnet Carre Spillway, which funnels part of the river’s water into Lake Pontchartrain.

But it’s the rising river at the Morganza location that has the corps worried, said spokesman Ricky Boyett on Wednesday evening.

“We have not made a decision on operation (of the spillway) but we did send a notice this evening to stakeholders that have a role in Morganza,” Boyett said in an email response to questions about the rising river.

“Based on the current forecast – specifically projected rain in the valley over the next several days – we could encounter the potential of overtopping the Morganza Control Structure,” he said, adding that the spillway structure – which contains 125 gates that are opened and closed by two cranes rolling on special tracks atop the structure – “cannot be safely operated if overtopped.”

“There are a couple of factors regarding safety that we must consider, but primarily it is unsafe for our personnel. Additionally, the structure is designed to hold back water, but was not designed to be operated while overtopped,” he said.

Boyett said the corps believes the overtopping might occur even before the river reaches a flow speed of 1.5 million cubic feet along the structure, which is the usual trigger for opening gates. “Based on today’s data, that could occur as soon as 5 June.”

But Boyett said the corps could move more quickly to open the structure because it agreed to a “slow opening” strategy to help with evacuating wildlife from the broad floodway leading from the spillway into the Atchafalaya River basin, after the spillway’s opening during a 2011 high river threatened a variety of wildlife species, including protected Louisiana black bears.

The slow opening also expected to reduce scouring in the tail bay area, where the water is released into the floodway, which also occurred in 2011.

The forebay – mostly farmland on the river or batture side of the structure – has been flooded for months during this year’s unusually long high-water season.

Boyett stressed that the decision to open Morganza still will depend on the actual rainfall that occurs over the next few days in the Mississippi floodplain upriver.

Meanwhile, the corps, local river forecast center hydrologists, and the National Hurricane Center’s storm surge prediction team have been conducting a series of drills to assure they can all predict the consequences of storm surge from an early tropical storm or hurricane attempting to push up what will be a near-full river bed through June, and now possibly well into July.

Barges and tugs lines the west bank levee of the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Pairsh on Sept. 10, 2005, left there by storm surge that moved up the river during the storm.

THE TIMES-PICAYUNE

Barges and tugs lines the west bank levee of the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Pairsh on Sept. 10, 2005, left there by storm surge that moved up the river during the storm.

During both Hurricane Isaac in 2012 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, surge pushed well upriver, swelling the river significantly. But in both cases, the river was at 3 feet or less when the surge moved upriver.

Hurricane Isaac, which became a Category 1 storm with top winds of 80 mph before making landfall at Southwest Pass on Aug. 28, caused the Mississippi to rise to 9.5 feet in New Orleans, from a height of only 3 feet on Aug. 26.

Hurricane Katrina, which was a Category 3 storm with top winds of 125 mph when it made landfall at Buras on Aug. 29, 2005, caused the river to swell to at least 15.24 feet that day before the gage stopped measuring water heights. Several barges ended up beached near the top of the river levee in Algiers, which was then about 17 feet above sea level. On Aug. 27, the river height was only about 3 feet.

“An elevated river is obviously a concern,” said Jamie Rhome, the National Hurricane Center’s lead surge forecaster, during a May 17 interview. “In this case, projections have the river keeping up during the first few weeks of the hurricane season and we have that factored into operational readiness along the coast.”

The testing has included making sure the surge modeling systems used by the center are operating properly, and how they would handle early storms forming in the Gulf, which will have different characteristics from storms occurring later in the hurricane season.

Using the modeling results and applying information about how the river will react to incoming surge – how the weight and speed of the river’s fresh water moving south will in part lessen the effect of the surge moving north – officials have been running case studies aimed at developing strategies for forecasting surge effects on the river, and the kinds of warnings that might have to be given to both emergency managers who have to plan for evacuations, and to the public, Rhome said.

“We look at the output collectively as a team,” he said. “How to interpret the results, what to do, what decisions are made.

“We have several warning tools in our toolbox, and we have to determine which one is most appropriate to clearly address the risk,” he said.

“Thankfully, we have one of the most advanced and interactive river forecast centers in Louisiana,” which has provided key information about how the high river’s water flow will affect surge heights in the New Orleans area and farther upstream, he said.

Petition: Elephant Massacre in Botswana; Restore Anti-Poaching Units Now!

change.org

Nicole Rojas started this petition to President Mokgweetsi Masisi and 1 other

On September 3rd, 87 elephant carcasses were found near the Okavango Delta wildlife sanctuary in Botswana. This is an unprecedented massacre considering Botswana has been recognized as one of the formidable defenders and conservationists of wildlife in Africa.

Botswana is home to approximately 130,000 elephants. Due to its steadfast conservation, elephants from other countries were crossing the borders into Botswana for safety.

However, after the election of President Mokgweetsi Masisi in May of this year, anti-poaching units (APU) were removed from the country’s borders and the anti-poaching teams’ weapons were confiscated. If these APUs were present, this recent killing spree of elephants could have been thwarted successfully.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council in 2017, 74% of travel to Botswana was by tourists compared to business travel. Monies generated by tourists was 686.6 million USD or 7,119.6 million BWP (Botswana Pula) and this contributed to 26,000 jobs for 2017. The obvious reason tourists travel to Botswana is to see wildlife. If anti-poaching units are not restored, the number of wildlife will continue to dwindle and in effect lead to a loss of revenue and jobs, affecting the economy as a whole.

Each year approximately 35,000 elephants are killed in Africa. If their population continues to decline due to poaching, ecosystems will be affected. The presence of elephants in the delicate ecosystem is undeniably paramount in not only supporting other wildlife but for the people who live in Africa as well. Elephants in the wild aide in generating tourism dollars which fuels the economy that then helps to feed the hungry, finance education programs and enable health-care programs that save lives.

The wildlife presence in Botswana has an obvious overwhelming positive effect on human life. If we stand idly by, the loss of wildlife will have a negative effect in the quality of life for the people of Botswana.

President Mokgweetsi Masisi and the government of Botswana, your gravitas and solemnity are being beckoned by the world for you to restore the Anti-Poaching Units and arm game rangers. Your conservation efforts to protect the wildlife will in effect help your people and maintain the economy of Botswana.

5 Ways Doris Day Made the World a Better Place for Animals | Care2 Causes

32496901111583334.jpg

Doris Day, who died at age 97 on May 13, may be remembered for her famous song, “Que Será, Será (Whatever Will Be, Will Be).” But as one of the first celebrities to advocate for animals, we should also remember her for making sure that—as far as dogs and cats are concerned—whatever will be, will be a whole lot better.

Day “didn’t just love animals—she was one of the first celebrities to recognize that star power could be used to advocate for change,” noted the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in a tribute to the legendary actress.

From creating what we now call World Spay Day to co-owning the first pet-friendly hotel, here are some of the ways Day helped make the world a better place for animals.

1. Created World Spay Day

In an effort to reduce pet overpopulation, in 1987 Day founded the Doris Day Animal League (DDAL), a nonprofit lobbying organization. In 1995, the DDAL launched Spay Day USA, now known as World Spay Day. Held on the last Tuesday of February every year, this day is an opportunity for shelters and rescue organizations to raise awareness of and support for their spay/neuter programs.

During its first 15 years, the DDAL provided the funding to spay or neuter over 15 million dogs and cats. In 2006, it joined the HSUS. It now operates as a political affiliate of that organization but remains a separate legal entity.

2. Founded Two Other Animal Welfare Charities

Prior to starting the DDAL, Day became a founding member of Actors and Others for Animals in 1971. This nonprofit also helps address the pet overpopulation problem by subsidizing spay and neuter surgeries in Southern California.

Seven years later, the actress launched the Doris Day Pet Foundation (now called the Doris Day Animal Foundation), whose mission has always been to “help animals and the people who love them.” The DDAF provides grants to nonprofits across the country that care for and protect animals. Last year, it donated $1.5 million to support the amendment that banned greyhound racing in Florida.

3. Advocated for Adopting Shelter Pets

In a public service announcement filmed nearly 50 years ago, Day encouraged viewers to visit their local shelters and adopt homeless pets, like the two of hers sitting in her lap.

“Shelters are unbelievably overcrowded,” she says, “and we can and must do something about it.”

4. Shared Photos of Homeless Dogs and Cats

Decades before there was an internet, social media or websites like Petfinder, Day was known as “the dogcatcher of Beverly Hills,” according to the DDAF website.

She always carried photos with her of dogs and cats needing forever homes and shared them with friends and colleagues. If someone expressed interest in adopting one of the pets, Day would personally inspect their home to make sure the pet would be happy there.

  • 5. Opened the First Pet-Friendly Hotel

A visionary when it came to pet-friendly travel, around 1990 Day became co-owner of the historic Cypress Inn in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif. This boutique hotel became the first to welcome four-legged as well as two-legged guests.

Police Officer Cuddles Up To Kittens He Rescued

thedodo.com
Arlington Police Department

Two police officers in Texas were finished dealing with a shoplifting call at a local TJ Maxx store when they suddenly got flagged down to help with something else — two tiny kittens stuck under a car in the store’s parking lot. Concerned for the kittens’ safety, the officers quickly went over to the car in question, and immediately heard tiny meows coming from somewhere underneath the car.

“They located the kittens inside the bumper where most likely the mother cat had placed them for some reason,” Jesse Minton, of the Arlington Police Department, told The Dodo. “The owner of the car advised she did not own a cat and had no idea how the kittens got in there.”

Once they figured out exactly where the kittens were, Officer Joe Bob Adkins was able to carefully reach under the car …and gently remove the kittens…

As soon as they were safe, Officer Adkins took the kittens back to the police car and just held them, trying to make them feel safe and loved, and the kittens simply couldn’t get enough of him. They absolutely adored cuddling with their new friend, and curled up on his chest in the sweetest way.

The officers immediately took the kittens to get checked out by a vet, who determined they were around 6 weeks old, and were relieved to hear that they were in fairly good condition. They assumed the kittens must be hungry, having no idea how long they’d been under the car, and so the officers fed them some formula out of a tiny bottle, falling more and more in love with them by the minute.

The more time they spent with their new friend Officer Adkins, the more the tiny kittens fell in love with him — so it didn’t take long for him to decide to officially adopt them into his family.

“He thinks he may name them ‘TJ’ and ‘Max,’” Minton said.
The two kittens are now settling wonderfully into their new home, and could not love their new dad more if they tried. He may not have been planning on taking home two new family members that day, but as soon as they cuddled up to him, he simply couldn’t resist.

Remote Island Chain Has Few People — But Hundreds Of Millions Of Pieces Of Plastic

npr.org
Christopher Joyce Twitter
Debris blankets the north side of one of the Cocos Keeling Islands in the Indian Ocean. Researchers found a huge amount of plastic both onshore and buried in the sand.

When a marine biologist from Australia traveled to a remote string of islands in the Indian Ocean to see how much plastic waste had washed up on the beaches, here’s just part of what she found: “373,000 toothbrushes and around 975,000 shoes, largely flip-flops,” says Jennifer Lavers of the University of Tasmania in Australia.

And that’s only what was on the surface.

The Cocos Keeling Islands make up barely 6 square miles of land, about 1,300 miles off the northwest coast of Australia. It was a good place to measure plastic waste because almost no one lives there. That meant the plastic debris there wasn’t local — it floated in — and no one was picking it up. It gave Lavers a good notion of just how much was bobbing around the ocean.

She was flabbergasted.

“So, more than 414 million pieces of plastic debris are estimated to be currently sitting on the Cocos Keeling Islands, weighing a remarkable 238 tons,” Lavers says.

There are 27 of these islands, most just a few acres in size. Lavers’ team of researchers studied seven of them, mostly in 2017, by marking off transects on beaches and counting all the plastic inside each transect. They multiplied that number by the total beach area of all the islands. Lavers had done this before on other remote islands. “You get to the point where you’re feeling that not much is going to surprise you anymore,” she says, “and then something does … and that something [on the Cocos Keeling Islands] was actually the amount of debris that was buried.”

Where Will Your Plastic Trash Go Now That China Doesn’t Want It?

Lavers didn’t just count the stuff on the surface, she dug down 4 inches into the sand. “What was really quite amazing was that the deeper we went,” she says, “the more plastic we were actually finding.” What happens is that the sun breaks down the plastic on the surface, and the waves pummel it into tiny pieces and drive it into the sand.

“It’s the little stuff that’s perfectly bite-sized,” Lavers says. “The stuff that fish and squid and birds and even turtles can eat.”

Brightly colored pieces of microplastic mar one of the 27 islands in the Cocos Keeling chain. Much of the plastic is hidden under the sand. The sun breaks down plastic debris, and the tiny pieces get buried in the sand.

In fact, most of the plastic waste was just under the surface. “We estimated that what was hidden below the sediment was somewhere in the range of 380 million pieces of plastic,” Lavers says. But it probably won’t stay there. Eventually, she predicts, high tides or storms will carry it out to sea.

Lavers describes what her team found in the journal Scientific Reports.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that no place on the planet seems immune from plastic debris. Ecologist Chelsea Rochman at the University of Toronto studies microplastics and says different places simply have different kinds of plastic.

Microplastic Found Even In The Air In France’s Pyrenees Mountains

Take the Arctic, for example. “Contaminants are transported via air currents in addition to ocean currents,” Rochman explains. “And there [in the Arctic], we see high concentrations of small microfibers and small particles, and so, absolutely, you expect different things in different places. And what you find tells you something about where it’s coming from.”

Rochman says she’s not exactly surprised at what Lavers found. “It’s just kind of sad to kind of read about it and think, ‘Yep, OK, this is becoming, I guess, normal.’

“And we never wanted something like this to become normal.”

Long Island couple tortured and viciously beat 3 adopted dogs to death

A Long Island man and his wife brought three lovable puppies into their Mineola home, where the husband viciously beat the pooches while his spouse did nothing — leaving two dead and another fighting for her life, according to prosecutors.

Jessica Kuncman, 30, and Ellie Knoller, 29, were hit with charges stemming from the torture of their three dogs, one after the other, each beaten within days of being brought back to their Mineola home.

The couple — who has been married less than a year — pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Nassau County Court to the heinous crimes, which prosecutors describe as “serial” animal abuse.

“In my 28 years as a prosecutor, I have never seen a case where someone committed this kind of serial violence against different puppies,” said Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas.

Prosecutors said the pair adopted the first pup, a male shepherd mix named Tucker, on Feb. 8 from North Shore Animal League — but nine days later the new pet was dead from a kidney rupture as a result of Knoller’s “blunt force trauma to the dog.” Tucker suffered from extensive internal bleeding and died.

The very next day, the couple purchased a Goldendoodle named Cooper from a Pennsylvania breeder. But the designer dog — which can fetch as much as $3,000 from a breeder — was dealt a similar fate.

Three days after his adoption, Cooper bled to death from internal injuries, which were the result of being pummeled by Knoller, according to prosecutors. He suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest from the disturbing abuse.

On Feb. 20, Knoller allegedly brought the puppy into Garden City Veterinary Care in cardiac and respiratory arrest.

By the time a veterinarian examined Cooper he had already died.

Knoller then returned to the same breeder days after Cooper’s death and complained he was sold a sick animal. He was given another Goldendoodle named Bella from the same litter.

The couple’s lone surviving dog was then allegedly choked, beaten and suffered several broken bones. The shaggy pooch was left with injuries that total more than $18,000 in medical bills — including broken ribs, a forearm fractured in two places and a pulmonary contusion, according to the Nassau County SPCA.

“I’ve never ever seen a case of serial animal abuse like this. Basically serial murder of an animal,” said Gary Rogers, the SPCA’s president, outside the court. “It’s just wrong.”

Both newlyweds were charged Wednesday with over-driving, torturing and injuring animals. Knoller also faces a felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Knoller and Kuncman face a max of two years and one year, respectively, if convicted on the top count.

“I don’t know why this happened and unfortunately the dogs can’t tell us,” Singas said. “Maybe there are anger issues. Maybe it’s some kind of sick sport.”

Judge Meryl Berkowitz ordered the couple Wednesday not to have any pets during the trial.

“The defendants are not allowed to have any kind of animals — not a dog, not a cat, not a bird, not a goldfish,” Berkowitz said.

The pair were released without bail but had their passports taken away. They drove off in a Range Rover without commenting.

Sign Petition: These Countries Want to Reopen the Ivory Trade and Put Elephants at Risk

thepetitionsite.com
by: Care2 Team
recipient: Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES)more

In the ten years leading up to 2016, Africa lost more than 100,000 elephants to poachers. Some conservationists warn that at that rate, African elephants could go extinct in less than a decade. Yet with that clarion warning, some governments want to roll back the clock and reopen the international ivory market, putting the rest of the remaining herd in danger.

The governments of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia, as well as Angola, are working together to propose a plan that would turn back the prohibition on the international ivory trade that has been in place for two decades.

Sign to make sure that the ivory ban is never lifted.

Currently, the ivory trade is governed through the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES) the treaty charged with protecting endangered animals. The presidents of these five countries believe that locals have the right to profit off ivory as a resource. It’s as if ivory could be exploited like oil or minerals and didn’t come from a living animal with a fragile population.

The Southern African governments plan to make their proposal at the next CITES meeting. The most recent event was canceled in Sri Lanka due to the Easter bombings in that country, but a new meeting will surely be scheduled soon and if these five governments get their way, the doors to the ivory market would be opened once more.

We cannot let this happen. Please sign the petition and tell CITES not to cave. Tell them the ivory ban must stand.more

Keep vital protections for gray wolves

Keep vital protections for gray wolves

Gray wolves in the United States stand at a pivotal point in their history. After hunting them to near extinction in the first half of the 20th century, the American people had a change of heart and gray wolves have begun a modest recovery under varying degrees of protection under the Endangered Species Act. Now, just as they’re starting to return to their former homes in places like northern California, the Trump administration is proposing to strip wolves of these crucial federal protections.

Earthjustice has been instrumental in protecting gray wolves for more than two decades, and we will continue that fight — but we need your help. Tell the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to abandon its plan to remove much-needed protections for wolves across the lower 48 states.

Today, wolves are still functionally extinct across the vast majority of their former range. These cherished keystone predators cannot be considered fully recovered until they are found in wild forests across the country. And yet in states where wolves have already lost federal protections, they’ve been shot and trapped in staggering numbers — nearly 3,500 killed in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming since 2011.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, under newly confirmed Secretary David Bernhardt, a former oil and gas lobbyist, is finalizing plans to significantly weaken the Endangered Species Act itself — part of a series of efforts by the Trump administration to slash protections for our most vulnerable wildlife and which amounts to a virtual extinction plan.

Interior Secretary Bernhardt wants to stop wolf recovery before it’s complete. Tell the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to keep federal protections in place so wolves can return to the wild places where they used to roam.

Tell Congress to Ban Death Nets in Federal Waters

act.seaturtles.org
Urge Congress to Federally Ban Driftnets in Commercial Fishing – Let’s Ban “Death Nets” Once and For All!

The drift gillnet fishery catches myriad ocean animals in mile-long nets as incidental “bycatch,” killing and injuring dolphins, whales, sea turtles and sea lions in shocking numbers. Last fall, California passed a bill into law that will phase out the use of large-scale mesh driftnets in state waters over the next four years and transition to less harmful fishing gear.

Long overdue, the Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act legislation, including Federal Senate bill (S. 906) and its companion bill in House (H.R. 1979), were reintroduced in March 2019.

Please email your members of Congress today and urge them to vigorously support the Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act. Once passed, this legislation will phase out the use of harmful large mesh driftnets off the coast of California, the only place the nets continue to be used in the United States. Tell Congress: Let’s ban “death nets” once and for all!

When you take this action, we will keep you updated on this campaign and our other work to protect wildlife and the oceans. You can unsubscribe at any time you would like.

PETITION: Stop Trophy Hunters from Driving Giraffes Extinct

ladyfreethinker.org
Image Credit: Facebook – Tess Talley

PETITION TARGET: US Fish and Wildlife Service

Lying crumpled on the dusty ground, long legs tangled underneath them and graceful necks wilting into the dirt as trophy hunters raise their arms in victory.

Photo after photo highlights the tragic slaughter of these magnificent giraffes, hunted by the thousands only to be turned into trinkets in America.

With numbers estimated to have fallen by 30 percent since the 1980s, this incredible species is disappearing right before our eyes. Between 2006 and 2015, 40,000 giraffe parts were legally imported into the US.

Thanks to pressure from conservation groups, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is now finally considering listing giraffes as endangered.

Doing so would ensure that restrictions are placed on their import into the country, and conservation efforts could be supported with federal funding.

Only around 110,000 giraffes are left in the wild. Already struggling under the assault of habitat loss and poaching, these beautiful animals deserve to be protected from trophy hunters.

Sign the petition urging the USFWS to add giraffes to the Endangered Species List, so trophy hunters no longer get a free pass to gun down one of the planet’s most unique animals.
