“[It’s] like family now, so I’ll be keeping it around all year.”
Roswell is very social, especially for a cat, and absolutely loves making new friends. Recently he met someone who became his best friend almost instantly — and it definitely caught his family by surprise.
Roswell’s mom was out shopping when she spotted a skeleton cat Halloween decoration and decided to buy it. Halloween is her favorite holiday and she loves to decorate, and what better way to do it than with something that pays tribute to her feline friends. She took the cat home and was deciding where to put it, but thought it might be fun to show it to Roswell first to see how he would react to it.Lindsey Kuzmin
And just like that, a friendship was formed.
“He immediately ran right up to it and started sniffing it,” Lindsey Kuzmin, Roswell’s mom, told The Dodo. “Within a few minutes, he was licking it like he was trying to groom it and kept brushing up against it. I wasn’t expecting him to be quite so friendly with the skeleton cat right away, but he absolutely loves it.”Lindsey Kuzmin
Now, Roswell hangs out with his skeleton friend every day. His mom keeps it in her office, which is where he spends most of his time during the day, so it’s always near him, keeping him company.
“He’ll walk by it and brush up against it like he’s saying hi, and will sometimes give it kisses too,” Kuzmin said. Lindsey Kuzmin
The skeleton cat also joins Roswell when he goes for rides in his stroller, which is one of his favorite activities ever, and he loves having his new little buddy by his side.Lindsey Kuzmin
Roswell’s sister, Leela, was not as enamored with the skeleton cat when she first met it, but Roswell has helped her come around a little. After all, he wants all of his loved ones to get along.Lindsey Kuzmin
When Kuzmin bought the skeleton cat, she had no idea that it would become such a fixture in the house, and now, it’s so much more than just a Halloween decoration.
“The skeleton cat is like family now, so I’ll be keeping it around all year,” Kuzmin said.

Meet Maverick— a big-hearted dog who loves making friends with people and pets alike.
“He is a super sweet dog. Super loving,” Lilly Ann Flores, Maverick’s owner, The Dodo.
However, when it comes to Halloween figurines, Maverick’s not taking any chances.Lilly Ann Flores
The other day, Maverick was at home with his family in Texas when he unexpectedly caught sight of some slightly eerie new arrivals out front — a creepy(-ish) collection of cardboard-cutout cats.
Turns out, the evening prior, Flores had decided to put the cats there as decorations for Halloween. It wasn’t meant to be particularly scary, of course, but Maverick apparently hadn’t gotten the message.
Upon spotting the cutout cats, Maverick froze like a statue:
“When I turned around, he was standing frozen like that,” Flores said. “I died laughing. I’ve never seen him do that before”
It’s impossible to say for certain exactly what was going through Maverick’s head at the time, but it does appear that he is actually “pointing” — an instinct some pups display when trying to alert their owners to something of interest.
In other words, Maverick was likely just making sure his family was aware of the creepy cat situation going on out front.Lilly Ann Flores
Fortunately, the cardboard cutouts posed no real threat. It’s just spooky season, that’s all.
“I think [the cats] just caught him off guard,” Flores said.
Regardless, Maverick’s family still has his back against scary things, real or imagined — just as he has theirs.

We all stub our toes or accidentally hit our thumbs with a hammer once in a while, which leads to bruising on our nails, which is normal.
But if you happen to notice something that looks like a black stripe on one of your toenails or fingernails, you should probably go see a health professional to get it looked at.
The reason you shouldn’t ignore these signs is that melanomas, which are cancerous tissues on the skin, can develop under our nails.
This type of cancer usually affects people of African descent, but it can happen to people of any race or gender, so it’s best to keep an eye out for it.
If this kind of melanoma is detected, removing the growth and the nail usually takes care of the problem, but if it is not looked into and dealt with, this kind of cancer can spread to other organs in the body.
While we don’t usually hear about this kind of cancer, it ends up costing about 1,000 people their lives every year.
If you notice a dark stripe on your nail that has blurred borders, you should get it checked out immediately. Also, if the stripe changes in any way, that’s another warning sign.

It’s that time of year when families decorate their front porches with whole pumpkins and carved jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween. But they may find that squirrels and other outdoor critters are the ones playing tricks.
Here are a few tips from experts on how to safely squirrel-proof the seasonal decor.
What to put on pumpkins to keep squirrels away
There are some deterrents and repellents that may be helpful in keeping the squirrels at bay.
Capsaicin – the chemical in chili peppers that makes them spicy – will be the most effective, according to David Hillock, a consumer horticulturist with Oklahoma State University’s Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture.
This could be in the form of sprinkling ground cayenne pepper on the pumpkin, or as the Bob Vila website suggests, blending crushed red pepper with water and a drop of dish soap to spritz on the gourds as well.
There are also commercial squirrel repellent sprays sold at nurseries and home improvement stores for use on a pumpkin to keep the critters away. That being said, the active ingredients can be made of putrid smells like rotten eggs and predator urine, according to Willian Baird, a professor of horticulture at Michigan State University.
Experts also recommended frequently reapplying if it rains – or if the pumpkins are in sunlight.
Other tips to squirrel-proof your pumpkins
Hillock said things like human or pet hair, soap and other household products are not likely to be effective in keeping squirrels away.
“If the pumpkins are in a small garden and there are only a handful, they could build cages out of a woven wire mesh and secure it over the pumpkins,” Hillock said. “If they are on the porch, carved or not, taking them indoors (or in a garage) during the day or when no one is around can reduce damage.”
Cleanly removing all seeds and strings from the inside of a jack-o’-lantern could make the pumpkin less tempting for scavengers, according to BobVila.com, the home improvement star’s ideas and advice website. It also suggests placing bowls of strong-smelling vinegar near the pumpkins, but not directly on them since the acetic acid can damage the skin of the fruit.
Slathering petroleum jelly over pumpkins could be a squirrel turnoff, and if all else fails, place a statue of an owl, hawk or some type of squirrel predator near the fall display.
A Chinese drone airdrops a robotic dog armed with a machine-gun. (Screenshot)
Recent footage of a Chinese drone dropping off a dog-like robot with a machine gun strapped to its back has gone viral, providing a glimpse at the future of unmanned warfare.
Video clips, which were originally published by Chinese media earlier this month, showed large unmanned aircraft system with eight propellers hovering in to drop off a robot dog. The robot has its legs tucked in as it’s dropped off, but begins to unfold its legs and stand upright and walk.
As the robot dog begins to move, it is evident that it has some type of light-machine gun mounted on its back. The weapon appears to be a QBB-95 or QBB-97, which are both drum-magazine fed weapons used by Chinese forces.
Another video appears to show the same drone-based robot dog delivery from a different view.
The Drive reported the footage appeared earlier this month on an account on the Chinese social media app Weibo named “Kestrel Defense Blood Wing.” The Weibo-verified account appears to be affiliated with the Chinese armsmaker known as Kestrel Defense.
Another video went viral this summer showing a Chinese robot dog actually aiming and firing at targets on a range. In the video, the robot had to move its entire body and take several seconds to fine tune to aim the gun and it would reel back under the recoil of sustained automatic fire.
The U.S. military has also been developing dog robots. The U.S. robotmanufacturer Ghost Robotics has also showcased a dog robot equipped with a 6.5 mm rifle pod.
The Russian engineering firm Intellect Machine has also showcased a robot dog armed with an RPG-26 anti-tank launcher. The robot, which is a modified version of a Chinese design, is being developed for Russian forces.
Several dog robots are already available on the consumer market and can be modified to carry and fire again relatively easily.
Last year an internet prank group called MSCHF (pronounced “mischief”) modified a Boston Dynamics robot called spot, arming it with a paintball gun and allowed fans to control the robot and fire the gun through an application on their phones. Boston Dynamics condemned the mischievous use of their technology.
Scooby, a gorgeous white dog with warm blue eyes, entered the care of a pet transport carrier healthy, but later reportedly arrived at his destination dead and already decomposing in his crate.
He’s tragically just one of the canine victims now tied to the carrier, whom officers recently pulled over in a U-haul at a traffic stop in Montgomery, Texas, where they discovered a cargo hold full of stolenand injured dogs left without food or water and wallowing in their own urine and feces, according to news reports.
Authorities arrested Tiara Alsaid, 26, on charges of animal cruelty, theft, and drug warrants from various counties, and Richard Anthony, 57, on unrelated marijuana charges after they also found drugs in the U-haul. Victims reportedly scammed by Alsaid’s “transport” company have since been identified in Texas, Florida, Tennessee and California, Sgt. Jason Smith told news.
One of those reported victims is Dyaisha Jordan, who told the Houston Press she’s still waiting to find out what happened to her shepherd Blackie.
“It is just a question that we have no closure for,” she said. “We still don’t have a clue as to whether he is even dead or alive.”
Defenseless animals don’t deserve to suffer and die at the hands of a scammer — especially one reportedly followed by a trail of official complaints with numerous law enforcement and federal agencies.
The individual(s) responsible for the death and suffering of these stolen dogs must be held fully accountable, with protections immediately and permanently enacted so they can never harm animals again.
Sign our petition urging Texas state prosecutors to treat this case with the severity it deserves, including ensuring the animal cruelty charges remain on the record, ordering significant restitution paid to an animal welfare related cause as well as the mourning guardians, and issuing a maximum ban on owning or possessing animals for the individual(s) involved.
Authorities have identified the guardians for three of the four dogs. Anyone who thinks the fourth dog could be their missing companion animal is encouraged to call Sgt. Smith at 936-538-3545.
UPDATE (8/9/2022): Great News! On July 29th, International Tiger Day, the House of Representatives passed the Big Cat Public Safety Act. Now, the bill is headed to the Senate. Add your signature now to urge them to pass this lifesaving legislation! — Lady Freethinker Staff
*
Thousands of big cats are wasting away as “pets” in the United States. These majestic animals are torn from their mothers while only babies and may spend their lives pacing miserably in tiny, cramped cages with no hope of a natural life.
Not only do these animals suffer mentally and physically, but they are also a threat to people, with hundreds of dangerous incidents involving big cats and humans occurring over the last 30 years.
The Big Cat Public Safety Act (BCPSA) — introduced in the House as HR 263 and in the Senate as S1210 — seeks to ban private individuals from owning any big cat species and restrict direct contact between these animals and the general public.
Only licensed facilities would be allowed to house big cats, effectively removing these animals from roadside zoos.
The BCPSA needs your support!
Sign this petition urging Congress to pass this important bill for big cat protections and to save thousands of big cats from suffering.
You talkin’ to me? Cats can recognize when their owners are speaking directly to them, and they give off definitive behavioral signs when that happens. This, according to a new study testing cats’ reactions to (1) owners speaking to other humans, (2) strangers speaking, and (3) owners speaking directly to their cats.
.
Study overview
Researchers studied how 16 cats reacted to pre-recorded voices from both their owner and that of a stranger when saying phrases in cat-directed and human adult-directed tones. The researchers investigated three conditions, with the first condition changing the voice of the speaker from a stranger’s voice to the cat’s owner. The second and third conditions changed the tone used (cat-directed or human-directed) for the cat’s owner or a stranger’s voice, respectively. The researchers recorded and rated the behavior intensity of cats reacting to the audio, checking for behaviors such as resting, ear moving…
There is a new U.S. recall of several popular brands of dry shampoo due to the presence of benzene*–a known carcinogen. Like similar recent recalls of personal care products containing benzene, the issue is with the aerosol sprays rather than the products themselves. Unilever announced the recall for 19 dry shampoo aerosol products from the brands Dove, Suave, and TRESemmé. Go here for a full listing of the recalled products.

It can be hard to bother voting, especially when every election that hasn’t gone your way has been rigged. But don’t give up; you can do plenty to keep our elections safe and fair.
Check out these sweet life hacks to a secure election:
Hire Kyle Rittenhouse to stand outside your polling place: He’ll protect your polling location from Antifa thugs.
Set up life-sized cardboard cutouts of Dinesh D’Souza to scare away mules: His face haunts the dreams of many a ballot mule.
Outlaw mail-in ballots and only accept votes cast through TRUTH Social comments: TRUTH Social is where the TRUE patriots hang out.
Vote multiple times to make sure they’re paying attention: If you can cheat the election, so can anyone! You better vote 30,000 times just to be on the safe side.
Put ballots under Mjölnir so only the worthy can vote: Why were the unworthy allowed to vote in the first place?
Upload your consciousness to a computer system so you can oversee every vote made by every human: Unfortunately, as a transhuman entity, you will lose all voting rights. And your machine heart will no longer understand the meaning of love.
Monitor all cemeteries to make sure the dead don’t vote: Keep an eye on pet cemeteries, too. Hamsters have been known to change election outcomes.
Invite lots of plumbers to the polls to look out for burst pipes: Every burst pipe is good for about 380,000 fraudulent votes.
Hang a sign in each poll booth that says ‘God is watching’: Works every time.
Live in a red state: Apparently, they have it figured out there.
Enjoy a safe election season, everyone! Don’t forget to bring a crossbow in case you run into undead voters!
