Illegal Catching and Killing of Dogs in Sarajevo

IN MEMORY OF VUČKO

P1020704

As you know from our previous blog, on 30 June, 2016, the Cantonal Government of Sarajevo issued a decision which requires the utility company KJKP Rad Hygienic Service (or “P.C. Rad”) in collaboration with Veterinary Station and supported by the police, to remove all stray dogs they find on the street. And also you know there are not in fact enough places new dogs in the already overpopulated, poorly maintained and inhumane shelters.  This removal of strays from the city will not solve a problem which is the direct result of owners either letting their unsterilised dogs free-roam, or because they abandon their unsterilised dogs.

Dalida Kozlic L.L.B, lawyer and activist,  Aky Coowa, activist writes:

On Monday 25th July, a peaceful demonstration called “Stop killing the dogs“ was held in front of the Sarajevo Cantonal Government. Those who attended requested the prime minister to end the illegal activities of the public company KJKP Rad…

Canadian Miner Energy Fuels – Destroying US Public Land to Send Uranium to S. Korea; Not Even Royalties for Bankrupt US Govt; Aug. 1st; Aug. 30th Comment Deadlines

If this were happening in any other country, do-good NGOs would be having fits that the country was being robbed of its gold, copper, and uranium. But, if it’s Canada, the UK, etc., robbing what was American Indian lands until a little over 100 years ago and then US Public Lands and Mineral Resources, it apparently doesn’t bother hardly anyone. The Haiti mining law was 1/3rd landowner, 1/3rd government, and 1/3rd mining company, which is why so many wanted to get shot of that mining law, pretending it was bad. Much of Haiti’s land is government owned, as is much of the land in the western USA. So, most, or all…

International Tiger Day 2016

Free Tony The Tiger

tonysteveThis beautiful watercolor painting of our handsome Tony is a work in progress by Steve Cavallo ( stevecavallo.com ) we just had to share.

International Tiger Day, or Global Tiger Day. was created at the St. Petersburg Tiger Summit in 2010 and is celebrated on July 29th.

Its’ goal is to raise world awareness for wild tigers and support for their conservation…we’d also like people to recognize the  problem of captive tigers since the U.S. has a significant role to play in ensuring captive-bred tigers don’t feed the global black market for tiger parts.

It is now estimated that close to 3,900 tigers remain in the wild, up from the previous estimate of as few as 3,200 in 2010…but in the United States there are more than 5,000 privately owned tigers!

Suspected Terrorists ‘Should Be Electronically Tagged’

Nwo Report

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani says that suspected terrorists should be electronically taggedFormer New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani has called for the electronic tagging of all suspected terrorists in America.

Giuliani advised Trump at the Republican national convention last week that Islamists should be forced to wear electronic monitoring bracelets or tags.

Time.com reports:

“I would think that’s an excellent idea,” Giuliani said, NJ Advance Media reported.

“If you’re on the terror watch list, I should you know you’re on the terror watch list. You’re on there for a reason.”

Giuliani, who spoke at the Republican national convention last week, is currently advising Republican nominee Donald Trump’s campaign.

He was in Philadelphia as part of an effort to bring Republicans to speak outside the Democratic national convention.

On Tuesday, French authorities identified a man who killed a Catholic priest during mass as an Islamic State supporter who was released from prison on the condition that he wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.

Mobs Of People Stop Truck Carrying 300 Dogs To Slaughter

Mobs Of People Stop Truck Carrying 300 Dogs To Slaughter
By Zainab Akande
Jul. 27, 2016

For more than 10 hours, 300 dogs sat in filthy cages.

It was incredibly hot. Many were hungry, dehydrated and in pain — from illness, injury and the sheer discomfort of being packed into such small spaces. They were crammed side by side together as if they were simply cargo.

Even more disheartening, there was a chance that the suffering of these dogs might have never been known — after all, they were well-hidden within the confines of a dog meat truck.

On the warm evening of July 23, Chinese citizens spotted the truck, which originated in the Shandong province, on the road and were quick to realize its final destination: a dog meat market located in the Jilin province of northeastern China. Citizens then took to WeChat, a popular messaging and calling app, to inform advocates in Qinhuangdao.

The race to save all 300 from being butchered was on.

Peter Li, Chinese policy specialist with Humane Society International (HSI), told The Dodo that no dog trucks had ever been stopped before reaching Jilin, which is China’s second largest dog meat market — until now.

Animal welfare advocates nearby were quick to get on the road and tail the truck while reporting it to law enforcement. While dog meat consumption is legal China, officers were called to investigate whether or not the dogs on board all had health certificates for transportation.

They were soon joined by advocates from China Animal Protection Power (CAPP), a coalition of Chinese groups fighting the dog meat industry founded with the assistance of HSI.

The truck carrying the dogs was eventually stopped as soon as it reached the Liaoning province by police officers and, after a two-hour dialogue between the truck driver, animal welfare advocates and police officers, they were able to get the truck driver to agree to hand over all 300 dogs.

“Police confiscated all of the dogs, with zero compensation to the traders, and placed them in the care of the activists,” Li said in a statement. “This was the first major highway rescue after last month’s Yulin dog meat festival, and the first one in Liaoning since January 2015.”

According to Li, several of the dogs rescued looked like typical pet dogs or rural guard dogs — they were obviously familiar with human contact and were eager to be touched once they were freed from the prison that was the truck.

“China does not have dog farms,” Li said. “The majority of the dogs slaughtered for food are believed to be stolen pets or stray dogs.” Li told The Dodo that dog meat traders in Jilin, which has a large Korean population, have used Korean culture as a defense for procuring and consuming dog meat.

“The perception is that ethnic Koreans eat dog meat as a cultural food choice,” Li told The Dodo. “This is not necessarily true. Like the rest of Chinese, ethnic Koreans do not eat dog meat in the same way they eat pork or fish. Dog meat consumption in Jilin as it is in Korea is very tiny, not a household food. However, the Han Chinese dog meat traders, in order to promote their business and create demand for dog meat, have been known to exaggerate ethnic Korean fondness for dog meat.”

The rescued dogs are now undergoing veterinary care and will be put up for adoption in homes mostly in China.

Lucky, a female dog and suspected stolen pet, was initially covered in insects. This is a photo of her after receiving emergency veterinary care.

“This successful rescue is a huge encouragement to animal activists throughout the country,” Li said in the statement.”It showed that the dog meat trade can be stopped if law enforcement strictly enforces the country’s laws.”

Success! Tomi The Caged Bear Moving To A Sanctuary | Care2 Causes

wp-1469748108669.jpeg

For two years, Tomi the bear has been kept in a tiny cage outside a run-down restaurant in the mountains of Albania.

He is there because business just wasn’t going well for the owner of the restaurant, situated in beautiful mountains 40 miles north of the capital Tirana, and so two years ago this man decided to add Tomi as a tourist attraction, to help build his business.

Tomi used to roam the nearby mountains, and the restaurant owner paid a veterinarian to shoot the brown bear with a tranquilizer gun and bring him back to the restaurant, where he was stuck in a 20ft by 10ft cage. Business boomed as diners watched the animal and also fed him junk food.
When Lisa Martin heard about this, she was appalled and decided to create a Care2 petition.

As she read more about Tomi’s situation, she discovered that the brown bear was in fact dependent on the generosity of visitors to feed him scraps of food, and that his “owner” sometimes forgot to even give him water. Click here to see more photos of the atrocious conditions and the life this bear has been subjected to.

He was also displaying disturbing behavior such as chewing his limbs and twisting himself up into knots.

Martin created her petition, which read:

“Please sign and help get Tomi out of this hell hole.

This is cruelty and Tomi needs to live in a sanctuary away from this awful place.”

More than 75,000 awesome Care2 members signed up to help free Tomi.

As a result, here is Martin’s most recent posting:

“It worked!! We would like to inform you that the Albanian authorities have taken the appropriate measures to protect the bear and move Tomi to a Kosovo sanctuary, which caters to the needs of Brown bears who have suffered cruelty. Tomi will be going to the sanctuary in Oct.”

Thank you, Lisa Martin, and all the Care2 members who signed her petition.

Care2 activists were joined by numerous animal welfare websites and other concerned animal lovers who contacted the Albanian Embassy in the U.K. to urge the government to take action to free Tomi.

Albania’s Environment Minister, Lefter Koka, said Tomi would be moved to Bear Sanctuary Prishtina in Kosovo in October. The sanctuary specializes in the care of brown bears previously subjected to appalling cruelty.

The Cruelty Of Putting Animals In Cages

wp-1469748597660.jpeg

Tomi is not alone, however. Sadly, it’s estimated that there may be as many as 80 brown bears in cages throughout Albania being used to attract visitors.

This is in spite of the fact that the brown bear is protected by law in Albania, and it’s illegal to keep one of these animals.

But how does watching an unhappy, underfed, depressed bear in a cage make for a good tourist experience? And more importantly, when will humans stop exploiting animals for their own profit?

Lisa Martin started her Care2 petition because she was outraged at the injustice of Tomi in his tiny cage.

Man who shot President Reagan to be released | WPMT FOX43

A federal judge on Wednesday granted John Hinckley Jr., the man who shot President Ronald Reagan in 1981, “full-time covalescent leave” from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. The order allows Hinckley, Jr. to live full-time in Williamsburg, Virginia, but still under certain restrictions.

Here’s a look at the life of John Hinckley Jr., who attempted to kill President Ronald Reagan in 1981, but was found not guilty by reason of insanity:

Personal: Birth date: May 29, 1955

Birth place: Ardmore, Oklahoma

Birth name: John Warnock Hinckley Jr.

Father: John W. Hinckley Sr., an oil exploration business owner

Mother: Jo Ann (Moore) Hinckley

Education: Attended Texas Tech University for seven years

Other Facts: Stalked actress Jodie Foster for a time and says he was trying to impress her with the Reagan assassination attempt. He says he became obsessed with her after seeing her in the movie “Taxi Driver,” in which the main character tries to assassinate a U.S. senator.

Whenever he leaves the hospital, Hinckley carries a GPS-equipped cell phone and is sometimes followed by Secret Service agents.

Timeline: October 9, 1980 – Hinckley is arrested at Nashville International Airport for possession of three firearms. President Jimmy Carter is in town that same day.

March 30, 1981 – At 2:25 pm EST, President Ronald Reagan comes out of the Hilton Hotel in Washington. Hinckley is waiting for him in the crowd and begins shooting. One bullet hits Reagan in his left lung. Also injured are Press Secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Timothy J. McCarthy and Washington police officer Thomas K. Delahanty. Brady is shot in the head and partially paralyzed. Hinckley is handcuffed moments after firing six shots at Reagan from almost point-blank range.

March 31, 1981 – The federal government formally charges Hinckley with attempting to assassinate the president and assaulting a Secret Service officer.

May 27, 1981 – Takes a Tylenol overdose in an attempt to harm himself.

August 28, 1981 – At his arraignment, Hinckley pleads not guilty by reason of insanity to a 13-count indictment.

November 15, 1981 – Hinckley tries to commit suicide a second time by hanging himself with an article of clothing.

May 4, 1982 – Trial begins.

June 21, 1982 – Hinckley is found not guilty by reason of insanity. He is committed to St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington.

February 13, 1983 – Hinckley makes a third suicide attempt since the shooting, this time by an overdose of antidepressant medication.

1985 – Hinckley’s parents establish a non-profit organization called the American Mental Health Fund, to raise money for mental health research.

1985 – Hinckley’s doctors report his condition to be in “full remission.”

1986 – Hinckley makes a brief, supervised visit to his see parents.

January 15, 1999 – The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in Washington rules that Hinckley can make supervised trips out of the hospital, accompanied by hospital personnel.

August 12, 1999 – Hinckley makes a brief, supervised visit outside of the hospital.

April 11, 2000 – Representatives at St. Elizabeths Hospital recommend allowing Hinckley unsupervised visits with family.

June 29, 2000 – The hospital withdraws its recommendation for unsupervised visits to Hinckley’s parents’ Williamsburg, Virginia, home following a hearing in which prosecutors provide evidence of Hinckley’s continued interest in violent books and music.

December 17, 2003 – A judge rules that Hinckley will be allowed limited, unsupervised daytime visits with his parents within a 50-mile radius of Washington.

December 30, 2005 – U.S. District Court Judge Paul Friedman rules that Hinckley will be allowed three visits of three nights each to his parents’ home in Williamsburg, Virginia, unaccompanied by hospital staff. Hinckley “is not permitted to leave one or both parents’ supervision at any time.”

April 16, 2007 – A hearing begins on whether to increase the length of Hinckley’s visits to his parents to two and four weeks at a time.

June 2007 – A judge rules that Hinckley may make six-night visits to his parent’s home in Virginia, but longer visits are denied until the hospital submits a more detailed proposal of Hinckley’s schedule.

February 2008 – Hinckley is allowed to attend his father’s funeral in Williamsburg, Virginia.

June 2009 – Judge Friedman increases the length of Hinckley’s visits home to 10 days 12 times per year. Hinckley is also authorized to obtain a driver’s license. The judge agrees he is not a danger to himself or others under the proper conditions.

May 2011 – Judge Friedman approves Hinckley’s request for additional unsupervised visits to his mother’s home in Virginia.

July 29, 2011 – St. Elizabeths Hospital asks the court to allow Hinckley two 17-day visits followed by six stays lasting 24 days. After the proposed visits, St. Elizabeths requests the authority to decide whether Hinckley could be released on “convalescent leave,” which would make him a permanent outpatient.

September 30, 2011 – The government files a motion in opposition of the hospital’s request for expanded conditions of Hinckley’s release.

November 30, 2011 – A hearing begins which may determine whether to eventually free Hinckley from a mental hospital.

February 9, 2012 – Hinckley’s hearing on expanded visitations and possible eventual release ends.

August 17, 2012 – Prosecutors on the Hinckley case file a motion asking Judge Paul Friedman to reject the proposal for more visitation time because People’s Place treatment facility had dropped out of a plan calling for Hinckley to participate in social group sessions.

February 25-28, 2013 – A hearing on St. Elizabeths Hospital’s request for Hinckley’s expanded visits and possible eventual release is held. The hospital proposes Hinckley attend social group sessions with a psychotherapist and see another specialist in lieu of the group sessions at People’s Place mental health facility that were withdrawn in August 2012.

December 20, 2013 – A federal judge agrees to let Hinckley have expanded conditional release from a Washington psychiatric hospital, where he currently has been detained. Judge Paul Friedman said Hinckley is allowed 17-day periods of off-campus visits to his mother’s home in Williamsburg, Virginia—up from the current 10-day visits.

August 4, 2014 – Former Reagan Press Secretary James Brady dies at the age of 73.

August 8, 2014 – A Virginia medical examiner rules Brady’s death a homicide. Police tell CNN that authorities are investigating the death.

January 2, 2015 – The United States Attorney for the District of Columbia releases a statement that they will not pursue murder charges against Hinckley for the death of James Brady.

April 22, 2015 – John Hinckley Jr. makes a request in federal court for what his family calls his “unconditional release” from the mental facility at which he’s been living for the past three decades. If granted, he will live with his mother full time in Williamsburg, Virginia.
