Actor Cillian Murphy becomes the latest celebrity to fire off a letter to Ireland’s Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, in support of banning fur farming in the country.

Ireland has yet to ban the atrocious act, and Murphy is urging his home country to join the growing list of nations — including Austria, Switzerland, the U.K., and northern Ireland — that have banned the cruel practice of fur farming.

It’s “a shameful, inhumane industry that is simply not compatible with animal welfare,” the “Batman Begins” star wrote in his letter on behalf of PETA.

Minks who are kept on these farms remain in cramped cages for their entire lives. Unable to run or swim or express any natural tendencies, many of these animals often go insane and mutilate themselves.

Naoto Matsumura has refused to leave the radioactive town of Fukushima, Japan in order to take care of its abandoned animal residents.

Fukushima was evacuated in 2011 after an earthquake and a tsunami caused a radioactive meltdown from its nuclear power plant.

Approximately 30,000 residents left the town, leaving behind their animals, including pets and livestock.

Matsumura, a farmer, had initially fled with his family, but because it was difficult finding adequate accommodations, he decided to return to Fukushima. It was upon his return when he realized the town’s animals had been abandoned and were in need of much-needed care. Animals had starved to death in their barns, or chained up without food or water.

“I had no choice but to stay,” Matsumura told Vice. “I couldn’t leave the animals behind. They needed to be fed.”

15 animal species have the lowest chance for survival

Climbing rats, seabirds and tropical gophers are among the 15 animal species that are at the absolute greatest risk of becoming extinct very soon. Expertise and money is needed to save them and other highly threatened species.

A new study shows that a subset of highly threatened species – in this case 841 – can be saved from extinction for about $1.3 billion a year. However, for 15 of them the chances of conservation success are really low.

The study published in Current Biology concludes that a subset of 841 endangered animal species can be saved, but only if conservation efforts are implemented immediately and with an investment of an estimated US $1.3 billion annually to ensure the species’ habitat protection and management.

Last July, in the middle of a hot Florida summer, a family moved away and left two dogs behind. They were “outside dogs” who were familiar with the lay of the land, and out in the country they bothered no one. No one bothered with them, either.

They were scruffy, filthy, and looked like they would eat just about anything when I found them under a horse trailer one day. Both were panting and had bugs buzzing around them. One was completely bald from his mid-section back and his skin was completely raw and red.

I was familiar with these dogs and had spoken with the family before they left. I was anxious to make sure that the dogs were properly cared for and offered to help pay for vet bills. In response, the family told me that the dogs were going to the shelter because they needed to be…

The human brain is 80 percent water, which makes the constant regulation of the amount of fluid in the brain even more important. Disruptions in the regulation of the direction or speed of the water flow are associated with medical conditions, including hydrocephalus (“water in the brain”), for example. Neurobiologists at Heidelberg University have now discovered a new mechanism that regulates the speed and direction of water flow between the cerebral spinal fluid and the brain cells. This mechanism could also be of great importance in the treatment of hydrocephalic diseases. The research results were published in the “Journal of Biological Chemistry”.
