The Truth About Fur

Can this brain-sensing headband give you serenity?

Imagine a gadget that knows your mind better than you do.

Picture a device that can rank the activities in your life that bring you joy, or interject your typed words with your feelings.

One woman has helped create just that.

Ariel Garten believes that the brain — with its 100 billion neurons that receive, register, and respond to thoughts and impulses — has the power to accomplish almost anything, if only its power could be properly harnessed.

Her company InteraXon, which she co-founded with Trevor Coleman, has produced Muse, a lightweight headband that uses electroencephalography (EEG) sensors to monitor your brain activity, transmitting that information to a smartphone, laptop or tablet.

The high-tech headband has been used to pour beer, levitate chairs, or control the lights — all without the wearer lifting a finger.

And in a world where technology is often blamed for raising stress levels, 35-year-old Garten…

Cyberattack steals millions of patient records, including 4 NC hospitals

NEW YORK — Community Health Systems, which operates 206 hospitals across the United States, announced on Monday that hackers recently broke into its computers and stole data on 4.5 million patients.

According to WBTV, four of the hospitals owned by Community Health Systems are in North Carolina, including Davis Regional Medical Center, in Statesville, and Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, in Mooresville.

The system also runs Martin General Hospital in Williamston and Sandhills Regional Medical Center in Hamlet.

Hackers have gained access to their names, Social Security numbers, physical addresses, birthdays and telephone numbers.

Anyone who received treatment from a network-owned hospital in the last five years — or was merely referred there by an outside doctor — is affected.

The large data breach puts these people at heightened risk of identity fraud. That allows criminals open bank accounts and credit cards on their behalf, take out loans and…

Yahoo ads network helps hackers spread CryptoWall ransomware

Indiĝenaj Inteligenteco

Now security researchers at Blue Coat say that they have seen CryptoWall being spread via – a major online advertising network run by, yes you guessed it, Yahoo.Innocent computer users click on an advert served up by ad networks, which takes their browser leapfrogging from website to website, until they eventually arrive at a server containing an exploit kit designed to infect the PC with CryptoWall.“What looked like a minor malvertising attack quickly became more significant as the cybercriminals were successfully able to gain the trust of the major ad networks like,” said Chris Larsen of Blue Coat Systems. “The interconnected nature of ad servers and the ease with which would-be-attackers can build trust to deliver malicious ads points to a broken security model that leaves users exposed to the types of ransomware and other malware that can steal personal, financial and credential information.”

This Phony ‘Anonymous’ Site Was Set Up to Trap Ferguson Hacktivists | Motherboard

Despite this, people are still logging on. As ihazcandy told me, “There are hundreds of people saying, ‘Hey, this is a honeypot, don’t go here!’, but I have 147 people on the site at this very moment.”As news of the site is spreading, people are clicking in from Facebook, IRC, and Twitter, he said. The creator sent me a link to the data he had collected. Reams of pages of IP addresses, which could reveal the physical location of those that decided to click the attack button. He said the collection only includes people who hit the attack button, not just people who visited the site.As you might imagine, the vast majority of them choose to “target” the Ferguson police department, but there are plenty others looking to strike the White House and other high profile institutions. While it seems unlikely that police would use the data, ihazcandy is keen for…

Woman kicked in the face by giraffe after climbing into exhibit

[ndn id=26524307]

MADISON, Wis. — A California woman was injured after sneaking into a giraffe exhibit at a Wisconisn zoo over the weekend.

The incident happened Saturday at the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison.

Police say Amanda Hall, 24, told them she climbed the fence to the exhibit because she loves giraffes.

Wally, a 2-year-old giraffe licked her face, then turned around and kicked Hall in the face.

A Zoo curator Jeff says the giraffe was just reacting to someone coming into its home.

Hall was not seriously injured, but was given a citation for harassment of zoo animals. The fine is about $686.
