80% of sunscreens either don’t work or have ‘worrisome’ ingredients, says EWG study

Stop Making Sense

Alexandra Sifferlin reports for Time:

New research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology shows that many Americans aren’t protecting their skin as much as they should. Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) asked people how often they use sunscreen when out in the sun for over an hour and only 14% of men said they regularly slathered on sunscreen. Women, at 30%, were twice as diligent about putting on sunscreen—while men were more likely than women to report never using sunscreen.

The problem isn’t only compliance. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) released its 2015 sunscreen guide on Tuesday, which reviewed more than 1,700 SPF products like sunscreens, lip balms and moisturizers. The researchers discovered that 80% of the products offer “inferior sun protection or contain worrisome ingredients like oxybenzone and vitamin A,” they say. Oxybenzone is a chemical that can disrupt the…

Racing Carnage: Horseracing Wrongs 2014 Death Stats Visualized

Writing and Data Wrangling by:  Heather Clemenceau

Data reproduced with permission of Patrick Battuello – http://www.horseracingwrongs.com

Most of the followers of this blog are familiar with Patrick Battuello and his meticulous collection of stats on the deaths and injuries of racehorses across the United States via his blog HorseracingWrongs.  I was recently sent his 2014 compilation of information on racing deaths for 2014,  and immediately I knew that,  as a visual person,  I wanted to see it represented in pictures and graphs.  So I took Patrick’s data line by line,  recorded each horse’s age at death,  the track info,  plugged it all in an Excel spreadsheet,  added state,  city,  and zip codes for each of the tracks,  scrubbed and sorted the data,  and then imported it all into Tableau for visualization.  It’s so disturbing to see the number of deaths of 1 year-olds in training at various tracks,  as…

Shark sighting in Ocean City, Maryland

OCEAN CITY, Md. — Beachgoers spotted this shark in Ocean City, Maryland. This video was shot near 27th Street. Several sightings have prompted authorities to temporarily close parts of the beach. The shark appears to be about 8 feet long.

According to the Ocean City Beach Patrol Captain, it’s a hammerhead. They say it swam around the sandbar just off shore in water that was only 3 feet deep in areas.

The shark was about 20 feet off shore when this video was shot, but people who were on the beach say it swam even closer at times.

Amanda Ecker on Facebook shared this photo with us of the shark at 7th Street:

Is that Michael Jackson doing the moonwalk in clouds during lightning storm?

GOOCHLAND, Va. — Six years after his untimely death, Michael Jackson made an appearance in the skies over Central Virginia.

The combination of clouds and light created an image that appeared — to some — to look like the King of Pop. The image was captured over Goochland County, Virginia during a June 23 lightning storm. Jackson died on June 25, 2009.

Photographer John Plashal said he was unaware of the Jackson imagery when he first submitted photos to the WTVR CBS 6 Facebook page following the storm. He said a storm chaser app, not a higher calling, compelled him to set up his camera outside Satterwhite’s Restaurant in Goochland where took several photos of the lightning storm.

“The image that you see of Michael Jackson just happens to be there,” Plashal said. He insisted he added nothing to the photo. “It’s…

Australian Marine Park Plans to do What With Stranded Dolphins?!

The ocean update

Alessandro Caproni Alessandro Caproni

June 23rd, 2015 (Angie Plummer). It sounds too sick to be true, but a marine park in Australia called Dolphin Marine Magic has been caught boasting about plans to milk wild, stranded dolphins for sperm.

Why ? So it can artificially inseminate its captive female dolphins – even though animal welfare advocates argue the pool they live in is already far too small, and illegally overcrowded.

Apple pulls Confederate flag-bearing Civil War games from App Store

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple has removed several Civil War games from the iTunes App Store for containing images of the Confederate flag.

The sweep began early Thursday morning, when Apple sent affected game developers a notice that their products were pulled from the app store. In an email to the game creators, Apple said the apps were pulled because they contained “images of the Confederate Flag used in offensive and mean-spirited ways,” according to Andrew Mulholland of HexWar Games.

Apple cited its app Store review guidelines: “Apps containing references or commentary about a religious, cultural or ethnic group that are defamatory, offensive, mean-spirited or likely to expose the targeted group to harm or violence will be rejected.”

The company added, “At this time, your app has been removed from the App Store. We encourage you to review your app concept and incorporate different content and features that are in compliance…

These places have the slowest internet in the country

NEW YORK — Do you think your Internet is slow? That’s nothing compared to what these folks are going through.

If you live in Chicago, and try to connect via AT&T from 4 p.m to 11 p.m., speeds for certain websites and Internet services are basically like dial-up in the 1990s.

There are a handful of other examples from researchers at M-Lab, which provides tools to assess Internet performance. In some cases, Internet speeds can be as slow as 0.5 Megabits per second.

Take Seattle, where CenturyLink customers trying to access particular sites from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. will have unbearably slow speeds. New York’s Time Warner Cable customers from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Verizon customers from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. speeds are so slow that they can’t access certain sites and services.

The same goes for Verizon customers in Washington trying to access particular sites…

Despite Criticism, Half of Japan’s Captured Dolphins Sold | Care2 Causes

Life or Lunch?

3143978.largeDocumentaries like Blackfish and The Cove have changed the way we view marine mammals – particularly dolphins and orcas – as entertainment.

The Cove was released in 2009 and won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2010. The film focuses on the process wild dolphins endure when being forced into captivity so humans can be entertained at theme parks. Featured in the film is activist Ric O’Barry, who was one of the people who captured five dolphins for the 1960s television show, “Flipper.” The experience led O’Barry to become a voice for dolphins in captivity.

Blackfish directly takes aim at SeaWorld and its captive orca, Tillikum, held in captivity since his capture off Iceland’s coast in 1983. Since his capture, Tillikum has been responsible for three deaths at the amusement park. Particularly the most notable of those was the 2010 death of trainer, Dawn Brancheau, which prompted the film’s development.

Study: Green household products have hidden toxic hazards

Watts Up With That?

From the University of Melbourne:

Hidden hazards found in green products

Dr. Anne Steinemann, Professor of Civil Engineering, and the Chair of Sustainable Cities, from the Department of Infrastructure Engineering, Melbourne School of Engineering, is a world expert on environmental pollutants, air quality, and health effects.

Professor Steinemann investigated and compared volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from 37 different products, such as air fresheners, cleaning products, laundry supplies, and personal care products, including those with certifications and claims of ‘green’ and ‘organic’. Both fragranced and fragrance-free products were tested.

The study, published in the journal Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health found 156 different VOCs emitted from the 37 products, with an average of 15 VOCs per product. Of these 156 VOCs, 42 are classified as toxic or hazardous under US federal laws, and each product emitted at least one of these chemicals.

Findings revealed that emissions of carcinogenic hazardous air…

Green Energy ‘steals’ from the Biosphere

Watts Up With That?

An Opinion Piece by
Viv Forbes, BScAppGeol, FAusIMM
Scientist, mineral economist and grass farmer.

Earth has only three significant sources of energy.

First is geothermal energy from Earth’s molten core and decaying radioactive minerals in Earth’s crust. This energy moves continents, powers volcanoes and its heat migrates towards the crust, warming the lithosphere and the deep oceans. It can be harvested successfully in favourable locations, and radioactive minerals can be extracted to provide large amounts of reliable heat for power generation.

Second is energy stored in combustible hydrocarbon minerals such as coal, oil, gas, tar sands and oil shale. These all store solar and geothermal energy collected eons ago and they are the primary energy sources supporting modern industrial societies and the vast populations dependent on them.

Third are radiation and gravitational energies from the Sun and Moon which are captured by the biosphere as heat, winds, tides, rain, rivers…

Activists to Descend Upon USDA to Save Nosey the Elephant | Ecorazzi

Life or Lunch?

nosey-the-elephant-592x399A group of animal activists are planning a rally in Washington D.C. this week in hopes of finally freeing Nosey the Elephant.

Nosey is a 32-year-old pachyderm who was sold to Hugo Liebel in 1988 and has been used in circuses performances and elephant rides since then. Nosey has been in the spotlight for several years now amid complaints she is forced to perform despite her obvious suffering from arthritis and a chronic untreated eye infection. Last fall, actress Olivia Munn fired off a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture chastising the agency for being aware of Nosey’s condition and not doing anything about it, and demanding that they confiscate Nosey from Liebel and permanently revoke his exhibitor’s license.

Unfortunately, despite that Liebel has been cited for violating the Animal Welfare Act two hundred times, the USDA did not revoke his license and Nosey continues to suffer. It’s for this reason…

We Have All Seen The Utmost Suffering Of Dogs At Yulin – Now The Pathetic FCI Allows China To Hold The World Dog Show In 2019 !!! – Petition Link Included.

Serbian Animals Voice (SAV)

FCI petition

SAV comment – we have just had to witness, rage, grimace and express untold anger at the untold suffering inflicted on thousands of dogs and cats at the Yulin ‘festival’; and now we are insultingly informed that China has won the gutless FCI right to hold the World Dog Show in 2019.  Is this an utter insult to Canines or what ?

How pathetic can this be ? – these Chinese government barbarians should be punished for what they have done and what they allowed to happen at Yulin.  At the very least, these pathetics should have this event stripped from them.  Let them learn the hard way; try to teach them to be civilised; a difficult task but you have to agree; but you have to try.

The following petition asks for the event to be taken away from China who will currently be hosting in 2019.  Please support…

Scientists Want To Call This Unnamed Octopus Species ‘Adorabilis’

Scientists Want To Call This Unnamed Octopus Species Adorabilis

What do you call a tiny octopus with big eyes, gelatinous skin and is cute as a button? Stephanie Bush of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute aims to classify and name this presently undescribed deep-sea cephalopod using preserved specimens and a clutch of eggs hatch housed at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Learn more about Opisthoteuthis Adorabilis in the informative video below by Science Friday.

“I don’t see any obvious reason why it would be inappropriate … it’s easy to pronounce and popular with the public.”

Stephanie Bush tells the AFP. She says only 12 individuals have been studied so far and they have all been female. The unnamed octopus is a form of Flapjack octopus and wouldn’t be the first species named ‘adorabilis’. For example there is a White-crested Coquette hummingbird called Lophornis adorabilis.

A 17-year-old invented an ingenious way to instantly stop bleeding

Ethics Asylum

Imagine this: You’re gushing blood. Nothing seems to make it stop. Then you apply a gel to your wound, and the bleeding stops within seconds. You’re healed in minutes.

This is the premise of VetiGel, an algae-based polymer created by Joe Landolina — a 22 year-old who invented the product when he was just 17.

Landolina is now the cofounder and CEO of Suneris, a biotech company that manufactures the gel. Suneris announced last week that it would begin to ship VetiGel to veterinarians later this summer. Humans won’t be far behind.

When injected into a wound site, the gel can form a clot within 12 seconds and permanently heal the wound within minutes, Landolina says.

“The fastest piece of equipment we have measures every 12 seconds,” Landolina tells Business Insider. “So we know that it happens in less than 12 seconds.”

The science that makes this all possible is…

Weigh In! Should It Be Legal to Break Into a Hot Car to Save a Distressed Dog?

Amelia Aycock

Every year, especially in the hot summer months, dogs needlessly suffer and die, trapped inside parked cars. On a nice, 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can reach up to 120-degrees within just a few minutes.

On a 90-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can reach 160-degrees in just 10 minutes – the amount of time it takes to run inside the bank and make a deposit, to grab a snack from the convenience store.

Currently, only 16 states have laws on the books prohibiting leaving dogs in parked cars. And, only 14 of those states grant permission to law enforcement to enter a vehicle to save a dog.

Smorgasbord Health – Weight Loss – How much should you really weigh?

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine

Before I get into the mental and emotional attitude that you need to adopt to lose weight successfully there are a few logistics to get out of the way! How much do you weigh now? And how much should you weigh to be healthy?

Where do you start?

It is important to have a start point when you are planning to lose weight so that you have a road map to follow, with a destination that is attainable. I often hear clients say ‘I would just love to lose 10 kilos or 2 stone or 10lbs’. This is based not necessarily on the actual weight they need to lose but what they consider to be an acceptably achievable goal. To be honest you need to be a little more specific than this. You may only need to lose 7lbs or 5 kilos or you may need to lose more to…

Hunting & Habitat Loss Could Lead Extinction Largest Herbivore Animals

Natural History Wanderings

UCLA Press Release

Which is most valuable: Gold, cocaine or rhino horn?

According to study co-authored by UCLA ecologist, the answer is devastating news for Earth’s largest animals

The study found that one-fifth of the world’s wild savannah elephant population was poached between 2010 and 2012.

Many of the world’s largest herbivores — including several species of elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses and gorillas — are in danger of becoming extinct. And if current trends continue, the loss of these animals would have drastic implications not only for the species themselves, but also for other animals and the environments and ecosystems in which they live, according to a new report by an international team of scientists.

Kind Woman Saves 100 Dogs From Being Eaten at Yulin Dog Meat Festival | One Green Planet

Life or Lunch?

dog2-1200x726In the U.S., dogs and cats are considered pets and beloved companions and as such, we would never support the practice of killing and eating them. We have designated animals like cows and chickens for consumption, despite the fact that they are just as intelligent and capable of comprehending their pain, but for some reason we elevate our pets to escape the fate of being food. While all animals deserve the chance to live happy, long lives free from human use and exploitation, in some countries dogs and cats are consumed just as readily as farm animals.

The practice of eating dog meat in China has garnered international attention with the rise of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in recent years. Started in 2010, this festival is meant to ring in the summer solstice by promoting the consumption of dog meat which is thought to have “warming” and auspicious properties…

Protect Eyes Radiation EPA
ionizing radiation spectrum

Recent studies have suggested a “no-threshold” dose for cataracts from radiation exposure to the lens of the eyes among radiology and nuclear workers. Is this a surprise? It involves more dangerous ionizing radiation than UV rays, as can be seen on the diagram above. And, when was the last time you heard a medical or governmental recommendation to wear your UV protective sunglasses for only part of the time that you are in the sun? UV protection sunglasses have been recommended for several decades. And, initially they weren’t cheap. But, everyone was told to buy them and use them. No one said that you can expose your eyes for a few hours or years, and then put on the glasses (or hat. [1]) But, this is the same sort of “reasoning” used by the nuclear industry and the so-called protection agencies-organizations, when they pretend that there is a safe…
