Vitamin D, when consumed at very high levels can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction.

Breaking! Court of Appeals Upholds U.S. Ban on Mexican Seafood Imports To Help Save The Remaining 15 Vaquita From Extinction – World Animal News

In a victory for one of Earth’s most endangered marine mammals, the vaquita, a federal court sided with conservationists and, for the third time, upheld a four-month-old ban on the United States importing Mexican shrimp and other seafood caught with gillnets that drown vaquita porpoises.
Rejecting a Trump administration legal challenge, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit confirmed a preliminary order implementing a federal law that requires a ban on seafood imported from Mexico’s Upper Gulf of California and caught with gillnets that threaten the vaquita porpoise. Gillnets kill about 50% of the rapidly dwindling vaquita population every year.
“The U.S. government is wasting its time and money trying to reverse the court’s order, which will only accelerate the extinction of the critically endangered vaquita,” DJ Schubert, a wildlife biologist for the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) noted in a statement sent to WAN this morning. “It’s time for the government to accept the courts’ decisions, ensure full implementation of the ban, and continue to work with the government of Mexico to save the vaquita.”
Yesterday’s decision is critical to the survival of the estimated 15 remaining vaquita on earth.
Vaquita are now relegated to only one place on the planet, the upper Gulf of California. Fishing with gillnets is driving the vaquita to extinction because the small porpoise is easily entangled and drowned in these dangerous nets.
Conservation groups, including AWI, initially filed suit in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York City in March and secured a preliminary ban in July on seafood imports from Mexico caught with gillnets that kill the vaquita. The departments of Commerce, Treasury and Homeland Security, which are charged with banning imports that are contributing to the vaquita’s extinction, have tried and failed to modify or undo the import ban three times.
“The federal agencies charged with protecting the vaquita should focus their resources on saving the last of these animals, rather than continuing to lose in the courtroom,” said Giulia Good Stefani, staff attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). “Immediate pressure on Mexico to ban all gillnets in the upper gulf and to clear the area of illegal nets is necessary now for the vaquita’s survival.”
The Marine Mammal Protection Act requires the U.S. government to ban seafood imports from foreign fisheries that kill or injure marine mammals, including the vaquita, at a rate above U.S. standards. The rate of vaquita killing by Mexico’s fisheries in the Gulf of California is above U.S. standards, and its efforts to stop this bycatch do not meet U.S. guidelines.
Over the past 20 years, 95% of the vaquita population has been lost. In recent years, the vaquita’s decline has accelerated. Sadly, it is predicted that vaquita will become extinct by 2021 if Mexican fishing practices and law enforcement efforts remain unchanged.

Experts And Animal Protection Groups Demand Veterinary Records For Seaworld’s Deceased Orcas Tilikum, Kasatka, and Kyara – World Animal News

Yesterday, PETA, Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), International Marine Mammal Project of Earth Island Institute, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, Cetacean Society International, whale expert Dr. Lori Marino, PETA Foundation veterinarian Dr. Heather Rally, and AWI’s Dr. Naomi Rose have filed a lawsuit against National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) over the federal agency’s position that it doesn’t have the legal authority to enforce permit provisions requiring the submission of necropsy reports and veterinary records for deceased orcas Tilikum, Kasatka, and Kyara, which should be made available to the public.
Tilikum and Kasatka—who were featured in the 2013 documentary Blackfish—and Tilikum’s granddaughter, Kyara, all died in 2017 of reported lung infections. The permits that were issued to import Tilikum and Kasatka in 1992 and 1978, specify that SeaWorld must submit their records to NMFS upon the orcas’ deaths—a stipulation that, in Tilikum’s case, also applies to his progeny, including Kyara. NMFS did not obtain these records and now claims (without legal justification) that 1994 amendments to the Marine Mammal Protection Act voided those provisions. The plaintiffs assert that the provisions remain in effect and that the data contained in the records are vital not only to understanding the impact of captivity and orcas’ welfare, but also to informing the treatment and rescue of injured or ill marine mammals in the wild.
“The plaintiffs are calling on the agency to stand by the permit conditions that it imposed, and ensure that the public and the independent scientific community can examine this information in order to improve marine mammal well-being and hold parks like SeaWorld accountable,” says PETA Foundation Deputy General Counsel for Animal Law, Jared Goodman in a statement.
“The captive display industry is the first to claim that the marine mammals it holds are valuable to scientific research and conservation,” says Dr. Rose, AWI’s marine mammal scientist. “Withholding necropsy reports and veterinary records from the public, including outside scientists, suggests otherwise.”
“Under the provisions of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, these orcas belong to the people of the United States, not SeaWorld, and we have every right to access information about their health and welfare,” states David Phillips of Earth Island Institute.
After SeaWorld announced that Tilikum was ill, PETA and AWI privately and publicly tried to persuade the company to release his necropsy report and veterinary records voluntarily upon his death, and met with SeaWorld and government officials to urge transparency. The groups, along with the other plaintiffs, are taking this legal action as a last resort.

Urge New York City To Pass Legislation After Yet Another Horse Collapses While Pulling A Carriage – World Animal News

Another horse became the latest victim of the cruelty endured by animals that are forced to work and pull carriages in NYC.
The heartbreaking incident took place yesterday when a distressed horse fell on a busy downtown street in New York City while pulling a carriage. This incident has animal advocates around the world outraged.

“We strongly urge the Health Department to investigate the condition of this horse, and make sure that he or she is not put back out on the streets,” Edita Birnkrant, executive director of NYCLASS, said in a statement, further explaining that a witness sent the nonprofit a video and photos of the horse while the driver and others were ‘pulling and dragging’ it for several minutes. “This latest incident highlights the desperate need for reform legislation to be passed as soon as possible by the City Council.”
As per the organization, the exploitation of these carriage horses includes being forced to work through brutal conditions during snowstorms, torrential downpour, and heatwaves.
Birnkrant also pointed to the death of two horses last month who died of colic in their tiny stables where they lacked any access to pasture or turnout areas as another indicator of the need to pass legislation to help other animals who are tragically kept in unacceptable conditions.
NYCLASS, which stands for New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets, was founded a decade ago to save NYC carriage horses, enact animal rights legislation into law, and elect pro-animal candidates to office.
Currently, the nonprofit organization is working on a new bill that will keep carriage horses out of the chaotic Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and Lincoln Square. It will also guarantee them a safe retirement, increase stall sizes, and many other commonsense reforms that will drastically improve their conditions.

Trump Administration Rejects Ban On M-44 ‘Cyanide Bombs’ That Killed More Than 13,000 Animals Last Year Alone – World Animal News

In yet another unfathomable move taking place under the Trump Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has refused to ban M-44s, also known as cyanide bombs, which cause agonizing death for thousands of animals in the United States every year.
The agency’s decision comes in response to a 2017 petition calling for a nationwide ban of the lethal devices that was authored by The Center For Biological Diversity and WildEarth Guardians, as well as signed by several other wildlife conservation groups.
The devices spray deadly sodium cyanide into the mouths of unsuspecting coyotes, foxes, and other carnivores lured by smelly bait. The fact is that anything or anyone that pulls on the baited M-44 device can be killed or severely injured by the deadly spray.
As previously reported by WAN, M-44s temporarily blinded a child and killed three family dogs in two separate incidents in Idaho and Wyoming last year alone. A wolf was also accidentally killed by an M-44 set in Oregon last year. Idaho currently has a moratorium on M-44 use on public lands resulting from the tragedies.
“Cyanide traps are indiscriminate killers that just can’t be used safely,” Collette Adkins, an attorney and biologist at the Center, said in a statement. “We’ll keep fighting for a permanent nationwide ban, which is the only way to protect people, pets, and imperiled wildlife from the EPA’s poison.”The EPA has registered sodium cyanide for use in M-44s by Wildlife Services, the secretive U.S. Department of Agriculture wildlife-killing program, as well as by certain state agencies in South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Texas.
“The government continues to prioritize the minority anti-wildlife ranching industry over making public lands safe for people, imperiled wildlife and companion animals,” said Bethany Cotton, wildlife program director for WildEarth Guardians. “These dangerous, indiscriminate devices have absolutely no place on public lands, especially given no evidence exists that they actually reduce conflict.”
According to Wildlife Services’ own data, M-44s killed 13,232 animals, mostly coyotes and foxes, in 2017. Of these, more than 200 deaths were nontarget animals, including a wolf, family dogs, opossums, raccoons, ravens, and skunks.
Unfortunately, as per the Center, these numbers are likely a significant undercount of the death toll, as Wildlife Services is notorious for poor data collection and an entrenched “shoot, shovel, shut up” mentality.

Alfords Point Bridge spans the Georges River which winds its way to the ocean just south of Sydney proper. On a normal day, it might provide a bit of shade for boaters passing underneath, or help visitors reach the beautiful Georges River National Park. But a few days ago, it became the site of something far more sinister.

Last Tuesday, while people were enjoying a relaxing time on the river, they noticed something out of place hanging from the edge of the bridge. It was as unmistakable as it was horrifying — the body of a deer dangling from a rope that had been tied to the bridge railing.

This was clearly no accident, deer just don’t end up hanged. No, this was a deliberate, well thought out plan of cruelty, that took effort and serious malice. Apart from the horror of what this poor deer must have gone through, families with children also had to see the killers sick murder scene.

Imagine if the rope had broken and the deer had fallen right when unsuspecting boaters passed underneath. Whoever did this could have killed someone.

Ask New South Wales law enforcement to investigate this crime of animal cruelty and reckless endangerment. Demand that they find whoever killed this helpless deer.

Problem

Malibu Safari was in the evacuation zone of the areas effected by the Woolsey Fires in California. Malibu Safari is responsible for the lives of close to 100 animals. Including Sanley the Giraffe, a zebra, water buffalo, horses, etc. When advised to evacuate their property, they chose not to evacuate the animals. When rescue groups went out to offer help, they refused the help. When rescue groups went out to check on the animals, most of the property had been destroyed by the fires. Images were taken of the fires still burning right next to the animals. It has been confirmed that there are animals unaccounted for. Animals who most likely parished due to their negligence. It was confirmed on Sunday. November, 11th, that the property was still burning and the animals are still at risk.

Solution

We are asking that these animals be removed from the property immediately, to a safer location. We are also asking that an investigation be put into action as to whether Malibu Safari should be allowed to keep these animals or any animal In their care. They do not have the animals In their best interest. The animals deserve to live in a safe haven where the people responsible for them will ensure their safety at ALL TIMES.

The House of Representatives passed a bill to remove protections from the gray wolf in the U.S, which would allow hunters and landowners to shoot the wolves at whim.

Before these protections were instituted, the gray wolf was nearly wiped out entirely in the same way. The measures taken have helped the wolves to rebound to over 5,000, which is still WAY under what the population used to be. Although they may not be considered “endangered” anymore, reviving hunting is a recipe for decimating the population all over again.

For that reason, we implore Republicans in the Senate to not allow this bill to become a law. Let’s continue to research the situation and perhaps ease certain protections as appropriate before inviting the gray wolves to be slaughtered out of existence.

Why It’s So Hard to Help Pets in Natural Disasters | Care2 Causes

The Camp Fire started with a spark — and, thanks to the wind, it turned into a terrifying blaze in a matter of hours. The fire burned so fast that evacuation orders sometimes couldn’t keep up. With thousands of structures destroyed and a growing death toll, the Camp Fire is the deadliest blaze in California history — and in addition to human victims, it’s claimed a number of animals, as well.

Among those who survived, some are safely sheltering with their people or settled into foster homes, but thousands more are being picked up and cared for by rescue groups. The process of reuniting pets and humans may take weeks or months, and it will involve an extended sheltering and rescue effort. In Santa Rosa, California, where a massive wildfire tore through the city last October, rescuers are still trapping “fire cats” and helping them get home to their people.

In Butte County, men like Jeff Evans are feeding and checking on animals inside the disaster zone since their families can’t reach them. Meanwhile, a feline burn victim is making headlines after falling in love with a firefighter — and firefighters have been spending time at local veterinary clinics visiting with rescued animals, in addition to benefiting from the presence of therapy animals traveling to the front lines to offer comfort.

Another fire crew rescued Charlie the cat, who was ultimately reunited with his family thanks to publicity. First responders like firefighters tend to be first to see animals like “Camp” the dog in need, but a TV crew helped rescue some trapped dogs, too! For instance, Sacramento Beereporter Ryan Sabalow rescued a badly burned cat, London, and successfully located its guardian.

Rescuers range from trained professionals to volunteers from all walks of life, and their efforts are vital whether they’re cleaning enclosures, sorting donations or providing skilled veterinary care.

The story of the people coming together to support the animal victims of the Camp Fire is remarkable and inspiring, but it’s also a reminder that fire evacuation sometimes happens so fast that people — and their pets — have difficulty getting out alive.

While some on social media have been swift to criticize people who couldn’t get their pets out, that elides people who had animals at home while they were at work and unable to get into the evacuation zone, as well as those with pets who escaped before they could be evacuated. Many of those panicked, heartbroken people are hoping they recognize the faces of their animals on the news and also fearing the worst.

We’ve learned a lot about handling animal care and sheltering needs in disasters, with experienced groups like the San Diego Humane Society, the Humane Society of the United States, and RedRover moving in quickly to provide on the ground support, alongside the North Valley Animal Disaster Group and Butte Humane Society.

Another lesson we’ve learned is the value of evacuating animals from shelters as quickly as possible — and getting adoptable animals distributed to out-of-area shelters, like the San Francisco ASPCA, to make room for evacuees and rescues. The magnitude of this disaster means that some fire pets are being evacuated to out of area shelters for care, but they won’t be made available for adoption until every possible effort has been made to reunite them with their families.

Rescue groups are also swift to set up sheltering and care facilities; the Chico Airport has turned into a massive animal care site, with 1,500 temporary residents. Meanwhile, the University of California, Davis is treating badly injured animals — you can learn more about the animals in their care, look for your pets and find out how to donate here. NVDAG is also maintaining a growing database of animals in care for pet guardians to search, and VCA Valley Oak Veterinary Center is cataloging burn patients.

Be advised that fire injuries can change the way animals look quite dramatically, including distorting features and discoloring fur. Having photographs and documentation of the animal’s chip can help with a successful reunion.

A similar animal rescue has sprung up around Southern California’s Woolsey Fire, where a news reporter took up the cause of a cat rescued from a burning home and has been providing regular updates. Rescue groups have also raised concern about the evacuation of large animals, including exotics, from the Woolsey fire zone; a now-famous picture of exotic animals seeking shelter on a beach has been making headlines around the world.

Dozens Of Cheetahs Are Being Sold On Social Media Platforms Contributing To The Illegal Wildlife Trade; What Is Being Done To Stop It? – World Animal News

A recent analysis of Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) research establishes that dozens of cheetahs are being advertised for sale every year on social media platforms.
The analysis, which covers the period between January 2012 and June 2018, aims to determine the extent to which the illegal cheetah trade exists online and to document the most relevant threats.
Cheetahs are listed under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). This means trade in wild-born cheetahs is permitted only in exceptional circumstances. However, CCF data analysis shows that 1,367 documented cheetahs were offered for sale through 906 advertisments, which is approximately one-fifth (20%) of the world’s remaining wild cheetah population. Cheetahs are on a swift decline, dropping from an estimated 100,000 individuals a century ago to fewer than 7,500 today.
The most utilized platforms in 15 countries are Instagram, 4Sale (mobile app) and YouTube, with the Gulf Cooperation Council accounting for over 90% of the ads, and Saudi Arabia totaling more than 60% of those.
The analysis focused on the three top sellers, all of whom are based in Saudi Arabia and posted 20% of all advertisments. Of these sellers, one alone accounted for 12% of all ads analyzed, and was found to offer multiple species that include: lions, tigers, jaguars, wolves, gibbons, and chimpanzees.
“The illegal trade in live cheetahs impacts the smaller, fragmented populations in East Africa the most. Mitigating the threat requires a concerted effort by governments to not only confiscate the animals, but to embark on awareness campaigns to reduce demand for endangered species as pets,” Dr Laurie Marker, CCF Founder and Executive Director said in a statement. “Already vulnerable, cheetah populations, particularly those in Ethiopia and Somalia, are at risk of local extinction because of poaching for the illegal pet trade.”
CCF estimates put the number of smuggled cheetahs out of East Africa at 300 per year. Many more die before being shipped to the Middle East.
“CCF maintains a ‘safe house’ in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, where a team of animal keepers are caring for eleven confiscated cheetahs,” said Patricia Tricorache, CCF’s Assistant Director of Illegal Wildlife Trade. “Eight were confiscated within a three-week period, and two were just three-weeks-old when intercepted. One of the youngest died a few days after confiscation.”
CCF has been working on counter poaching and trafficking since 2005.
Since 2011, CCF has assisted the Somaliland government with the surrender or confiscation of 50 cheetahs. On August 28th, a landmark victory was achieved in local courts when two subjects charged with wildlife trafficking were sentenced to three years in prison and fined $300 USD and their vehicle seized; marking the first conviction for the illegal cheetah trade in Somaliland.

Taepyeong, the largest dog slaughterhouse in South Korea has been shut down by local authorities, bringing the country one step closer to ending its brutal dog meat trade.
As per Humane Society International (HSI), Seongnam city council intends to build a community park on the land, creating a vibrant public space where once hundreds of thousands of dogs were slaughtered for human consumption.
Sadly, as per an update on the Korea Animal Rights Advocates Facebook page yesterday, a delay by Seongnam-si resulted in the slaughterhouse owner having time to transfer the dogs to another location.
“We could not ‘rescue’ the dogs this time. However, it is important for dog farm owners to show the downfall of the largest dog slaughterhouse, to show the change of the largest traditional dog market, and to drive their compliance,” the organization noted in the post. “In doing so, we must reduce the number of dog farms and dog slaughterhouses that we need to shut down. Also, we must do more to pass the dog slaughter ban.”
Taepyeong is comprised of six individual slaughterhouses, five of which will be bulldozed immediately. Permission to destroy the sixth building was not secured in time for the closure, however, all of its cages will be destroyed and equipment removed so that it is no longer operational.

“Both as a Korean citizen and an animal campaigner, it was incredibly moving for me to be a part of the historic closure of this notorious dog slaughterhouse,” stated HSI Korea’s Nara Kim in a statement. ” This really feels like a landmark moment in the demise of the dog meat industry in South Korea, and sends the clear message that the dog meat industry is increasingly unwelcome in Korean society.”
The closure of Taepyeong comes at a time when dog meat consumption is declining rapidly in South Korea, particularly among younger generations. A survey by Gallup Korea conducted in June 2018 claims that 70% of South Koreans state that they will not eat dog meat in the future, and recent moves to curb the dog meat trade reflect a society increasingly ill at ease with the industry. Most recently, last September, a Supreme Court struck down a lower court decision to allow dog electrocution.
“We have been making constant efforts to shut down the Taepyeong-dong dog slaughterhouse through investigations and putting pressure on Gyeonggi province and Seongnam-si. As Korea’s biggest, brutal, illegal dog slaughterhouse, Taepyeong-dong is notorious for supplying huge amounts of dog bodies to nearby Seongnam Moran traditional market. Its closure is a historical event, and hopefully may trigger the closure of other illegal dog slaughterhouses throughout the country,” said Hyunji Kim of Korea Animal Rights Advocates. “Until we achieve this, we really appreciate the support of both Korean people and global citizens who love animals for helping our campaigns to completely end dog meat in Korea.”
Korea Animal Rights Advocates recently teamed up with HSI International to present a petition of nearly one million signatures to the President’s Blue House, calling for an END to the dog meat trade!

More than 150 pilot whales were found either dead or dying in numerous separate incidents over the weekend in New Zealand.
A staggering 145 pilot whales from two pods were discovered stranded on a beach in Stewart Island late Saturday evening.
According to the Department of Conservation (DOC), half of the whales had already died by the time they were found, and the remaining ones tragically had to be euthanized.
“Sadly, the likelihood of being able to successfully re-float the remaining whales was extremely low. The remote location, lack of nearby personnel, and the whales’ deteriorating condition meant the most humane thing to do was to euthanize,” DOC Rakiura Operations Manager Ren Leppens said in a statement. “However, it’s always a heart-breaking decision to make.”
The DOC reportedly responds to an average of 85 marine mammal strandings per year, but they are mostly of single animals, not pods.
Exactly why whales and dolphins strand is not fully known, but factors can include: sickness, navigational error, geographical features, a rapidly falling tide, being chased by a predator, or extreme weather. More than one factor may contribute to a stranding.
A number of strandings occurred on New Zealand shores over the weekend, however these events are unlikely to be related.
“Of the 12 pygmy killer whales which stranded just over 24 hours ago, eight are alive and are being moved from Ninety Mile Beach on the west coast to Rarawa Beach on the east coast,” Project Jonah New Zealand shared on its Facebook page yesterday, explaining that there was a stream in which the whales could survive in overnight.
As per the nonprofit, medics have been mobilized and the re-floating phase of the rescue is scheduled to begin on Tuesday at 6:30am.
Members are needed to assist with this crucial phase of the rescue.
Volunteers should report to the Rarawa Campground upon arrival on Tuesday morning. Those with wetsuits will help with the release of the pygmy killer whales into the water. Volunteers without wetsuits can help care for whales on the beach before the re-float attempt takes place.
All volunteers should bring warm clothing, a sunhat and sunblock and plenty of food and water.
Tragically, the DOC also reported that a sperm whale also beached in Doubtful Bay on Karikari Peninsula in Northland. The male whale, which is thought to have beached around 3:00pm on Friday, sadly died overnight on Saturday. A dead female pygmy sperm whale also washed up at Ohiwa over the weekend.

Animal rescue volunteers say more than four dozen sea turtles have died of exposure after washing ashore in frigid conditions on Cape Cod.

The Cape Cod Times reports that low temperatures and high winds combined to kill most of the 50 turtles that washed up Thursday in Brewster, Orleans and Eastham on the lower part of the peninsula.

The Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary says about 350 sea turtles have come ashore since Oct. 22. They include Kemp’s ridley turtles, green turtles and loggerhead turtles.

Spokeswoman Jenette Kerr says most of the animals being brought to the sanctuary are dead and in some cases literally frozen.

Biologists say the turtles are stunned by the cold water in Cape Cod Bay, which shuts down their metabolisms and renders them unable to move.

Friends and supporters , once again I’ll be entering the burn zone to effect fire cat rescues. I spent well over 800 hours rescuing fire cats in the Tubbs Fire of Sonoma County and the Carr Fire of Shasta County.
This time I’ll be self deploying to the Camp Fire in Butte County. There are thousands of missing, displaced and burned animals(most of them cats). I am requesting some help to purchase equipment(trail cams, batteries ), food for my bait stations, veterinary donations, supplies and fuel for the trips back and forth. Anything helps. This is a long haul effort and I’ll be traveling to Butte County as often as twice a week(about 400 miles round trip)to rescue fire cats and to train volunteers and families on how to find their missing fire pets.
This is about the animals and their families. Bringing a lost pet back to these folks who’ve lost everything brings them back from the darkness and gives them hope. I witnessed this over and again when I reunited many fire cats with their families. I do not do this for a living bit out of love and compassion. NEW YORK — Health officials in the US and Canada on Tuesday told people to avoid eating romaine lettuce because of a new E. coli outbreak.

The US Food and Drug Administration said it was working with officials in Canada on the outbreak, which has sickened 32 people in 11 states in the US and 18 people in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

The strain identified is different from the one linked to romaine earlier this year, but it appears similar to one linked to leafy greens last year.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb says the agency didn’t have enough information to request that suppliers issue a recall, but he said supermarkets and restaurants should withdraw romaine products until the contamination can be identified.

No deaths have been reported, but 13 of the people who became sick in the US were hospitalized. The last reported illness was on Oct. 31.

Tracing the source of contaminated lettuce can be difficult because it’s often repackaged by middlemen, said Sarah Sorscher, deputy director of regulatory affairs at the Center for Science in the Public Interest. That can mean the entire industry becomes implicated in outbreaks, even if not all products are contaminated.

Washing lettuce won’t ensure that contaminated lettuce is safe, Sorscher said.

Most E. coli bacteria are benign but some can cause illness, with symptoms including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can last longer and be more severe.

Villagers living near the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh, India, stormed the reserve last week to brutally slaughter a 10-year-old tigress.

First, they ran the terrified animal over with stolen tractors, then they beat her to death with sticks. Photos of the slain animal show head and facial injuries, with blood pouring from her eyes, mouth, and nose.

The savage attack came after one of the villagers succumbed to injuries inflicted by the tigress earlier in the day – when he had illegally taken a shortcut through the reserve on the way home and been attacked.

The Dudhwa Tiger Reserve is the last home to the Bengal Tiger in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and was estimated to contain around 106-118 tigers during the last survey in 2011.

Although human-animal conflict is rampant in rural areas of India, this tigress had no history of attacking humans. Field director of the reserve Ramesh Pandey has pledged that all the villagers involved in the attack will be sent to jail; however, more needs to be done to prevent this kind of tragedy from occurring again.

Mufasa is a white lion. There are less than 300 of his kind left in the world, of which only 13 exist in the wild.

Mufasa was confiscated by law enforcement and handed to a wildlife rehabilitation center to be cared for. The rehab centre acquired a second cub Suraya, as a companion for Mufasa. Mufasa and Suraya are now three years old and are inseparable.

Nature conservation officials refused permission for Mufasa to be relocated to a sanctuary, who offered to care for both Mufasa and Suraya for their natural lives, free of charge. Instead, the rehab centre was told telephonically that Mufasa will be auctioned to raise funds for the department.

We ask you to sign our petition, asking for both Mufasa and Suraya to be donated to a sanctuary chosen by the people who took care of them for the past three years, to prevent them from being exploited.

RELOCATION OF CONFISCATED LION MALE- MUFASA AND FEMALE SURAYA

We hereby petition you to review the decision of the Northwest Department of Rural, Environment and Agricultural development (READ) to refuse a relocation permit for Mufasa and to grant a permit only for the lioness who has been Mufasa’s companion for almost three years.

In terms of an agreement with READ , the rehab centre who cared for the two lions, and carried the costs thereof up to date, has the right to propose a sanctuary, where the lions are to be cared for. Sanwild has agreed to take the lions and to care for them free of charge, and the rehab put in an official proposal for the two to be released in Sanwild. This proposal was refused

The reasons why we believe the existing decision should be overturned are as follows:

1) Mufasa has had a vasectomy and is no longer able to breed and is therefore of no interest to a breeder. The only commercial value he has, is to be hunted in a put and chase hunt, otherwise known as a canned hunt.

2) Mufasa and Suraya have formed an inseparable bond. If the two are separated, both will suffer trauma and stress.

3) You are no doubt aware of the decision reached at COP 17 of CITES in Johannesburg during 2016 and the amendment noted in Conf 17-8 concerning the Disposal of illegally traded and confiscated specimens of CITES-listed species. We specifically draw your attention to the decision tree analysis for captive options, formulated in Resolution Conf. 17.8 – 14. We will not dwell on the contents, but only wish to highlight the first two requirements

a. As a point of departure the confiscating authority should consider releasing the specimen in the wild.

b. If that is not feasible and there is space available in non-commercial captive facility (e.g. a lifetime-care facility) the confiscating authority should execute an agreement and transfer the animal.

4) Mufasa is a text book case of the above and we believe it will be a transgression of both the spirit and the fabric of CITES to treat him otherwise.

5) There are no other suitable sanctuaries in the North west province that are able to care for both lions and the best practical nvironmental option in the interest of the welfare of the two lions are to be released to Sanwild.

We therefor petition you to intervene and to authorise the relocation permit for both lions to Sanwild.

The majestic animal, named Mufasa, was confiscated three years ago when he was a cub, along with another baby lion called Soraya.

Animal lovers want to move him to a sanctuary, but authorities in South Africa have instead announced he will be sold at auction.

Because Mufasa is infertile, the only value he would have is to be bought by a hunting company and then shot.
