Stop Dow Chemical’s “Agent Orange” Crops

Over a hundred million additional pounds of toxic pesticides associated with cancers and birth defects are coming to a field near you. UNLESS YOU STOP IT!

“Agent Orange” crops are genetically engineered by Dow Chemical to promote the use of 2,4-D, one of the herbicides in the toxic mixture Vietnam veteran’s know as Agent Orange. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is on the cusp of approval, even though they acknowledge the use of this toxic pesticide will skyrocket.
There is a 30-day public comment period and it MIGHT BE OUR LAST CHANCE to stop this chemical assault – Sign the petition today!

GR:  The dangers of pesticides are pervasive and worth repeating. Weed managers spray millions of gallons of pesticides on crops, along roads, and in parks. The U. S. Bureau of Land Management uses pesticides throughout the public lands of the 17…

Deadly Ebola virus wiping out gorilla population across Africa

The Extinction Protocol

August 2014 AFRICA – One day in 1996, boys from a village in northern Gabon brought home a chimpanzee they found dead in the forest. The villagers butchered it for food. That act set off an Ebola outbreak that killed 21 people, according to the World Health Organization. Years later, on a reporting trip in Gabon, author David Quammen met two men from the village who were there during the outbreak. At the time Ebola was ravaging their village and their families, they noticed something strange. In the forest nearby, 13 gorillas lay dead. Thirteen dead gorillas, 21 dead humans. Plus the chimpanzee the boys found in the forest. All victims of Ebola. For the western lowland gorilla, the toll of Ebola has been devastating. “There has been an epidemic wave of death passing through gorilla populations across central Africa,” Quammen said, “a wave of Ebola killing them as…

Trouble on the horizon for GM crops?

Pests are adapting to genetically modified crops in unexpected ways, researchers have discovered – The findings underscore the importance of closely monitoring and countering pest resistance to biotech crops

Resistance of cotton bollworm to insect-killing cotton plants involves more diverse genetic changes than expected, an international research team reports in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

To decrease sprays of broad-spectrum insecticides, which can harm animals other than the target pests, cotton and corn have been genetically engineered to produce toxins derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt.

Bt toxins kill certain insect pests but are harmless to most other creatures including people. These environmentally friendly toxins have been used for decades in sprays by organic growers and since 1996 in engineered Bt crops by mainstream farmers.

Staff Report

FRISCO — Arctic snow cover has thinned significantly in recent decades, especially on sea ice off the west coast of Alaska, with some as-yet unknown consequences for the environment, researchers said this week in a new study accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans.

In the study, led by scientists with NASA and the University of Washington, the scientists compared and analyzed data from  NASA airborne surveys, collected between 2009 and 2013, with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers buoys frozen into the sea ice, and earlier data from Soviet drifting ice stations in 1937 and from 1954 through 1991.

Results showed that snowpack has thinned from 14…

Whales Serve As Important Ecosystem Engineers

Whales serve as important ecosystem engineers, study finds

By Elizabeth Learned,

Experts have found that when it comes to the ecosystems in the oceans, the main engineers are the whales.

According to the Press Trust of India, a study believes that when it comes to the earth’s oceans, how the globe’s carbon is stored and the impact on health when it comes to fisheries, a huge influence can be found in whales.

Joe Roman, who is a biologist with the University of Vermont, said, “For a long time, whales have been considered too rare to make much of a difference in the oceans.”

However, Roman and other researchers looked at decades of research when it came to whales from all over. The researchers said, “The continued recovery of great whales may help to buffer marine ecosystems from destabilizing stresses.”

The study was published in the journal…

Calendar day; August 13, 2014

Wednesday, the 13th of August, 2014 is the 225th day in 2014 and in the 33rd calendar week.

General Events:

International Lefthanders Day
August 13, 2014 in the World

International Lefthanders Day is celebrated on August 13, 2014. It was first observed 13 August 1976. As its name suggests, it is meant to promote awareness of the inconveniences facing left-handers in a predominantly right-handed world. It celebrates the left-handers, who are from seven to ten percent of the world’s population.

International Lefthanders Day was founded by the Left-Handers Club in 1992, with the club itself having been founded in 1990. International Left-Handers Day is, according to the club, “an annual event when left-handers everywhere can celebrate their sinistrality [meaning left-handedness] and increase public awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed.”

If you are left-handed, you know that living in a world designed for right-handed people can be quite…

To start the day …. Don’t just study spirituality, live it!!

It Is What It Is

~~August 13, 2014~~

Traditionally spirituality has been defined as a process of personal transformation in accordance with religious ideals. Since the 19th century spirituality is often separated from religion, and has become more oriented on subjective experience and psychological growth. It may refer to almost any kind of meaningful activity or blissful experience, but without a single, widely-agreed definition.

Sunset on lake in New Zealand

Modern spirituality is centered on the “deepest values and meanings by which people live.”[93] It embraces the idea of an ultimate or an alleged immaterial reality. It envisions an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of his/her being.

Not all modern notions of spirituality embrace transcendental ideas. Secular spirituality emphasizes humanistic ideas on moral character (qualities such as love, compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, responsibility, harmony, and a concern for others). These are aspects of life and human experience which go beyond a purely materialist view of…

It’s Not Horseback Riding – It’s Exploitation!

Royal LippizanersWritten by:  Heather Clemenceau

Last night I read the “Death to Carnism” blog on Tumblr – “Horseback Riding: Is it Vegan?” The main premise of the blog is that horses are cruelly treated and oppressed by riding. The author is also adamant that animals should not be possessed by anyone who benefits from such ownership in ANY way, or if their presence in our lives gives us any sort of personal pleasure or happiness.   So obviously, I think the themes presented in the blog are spurious, because, even though I don’t eat meat, I can hardly equate riding horses with eating a factory-farmed animal. Nor do I believe that pet ownership implies that we are guilty of imprisonment, commodification, oppression, or cruelty to animals. For someone so intensely passionate about treating animals well, the author of the blog seems to have no issue treating human beings like crap. I…

“Beep, beep, boop” – WordPress makes another design change for how to create a new post!

Lantern Timeglass Journal

Hey, WordPress, WTF?!!

I go to “Timeglass Journal” on the bar to get the drop-down menu, to select New > Post.

I get “beep, beep, boop” (seriously) words on the screen . . . with a long pause… Then instead of getting what I’ve been using to create a new post, I instead get the other means. Like from the Sites listing page, when clicking on the pencil symbol next to “Add New Post” to get . . . this thing.

Why, WordPress, why? Why take something that works flawlessly and totally screw it up? Now with this additional change – excuse me I mean “improvement” – WordPress goes from SNAFU to FUBAR.

This is making it really tough for me to remain at WordPress.
