BILLINGS – A Billings horse breeder has begun a 120-day animal-cruelty conviction sentence after the Montana Supreme Court rejected his appeal.

Yellowstone County Attorney Scott Twito says 72-year-old James Leachman turned himself in at the county’s detention center Friday.

Leachman operated a horse breeding business before the U.S. Farm Services Administration foreclosed on the property in 2010. Leachman still kept more than 400 horses on the property after it was sold.

Investigators discovered five horses, some malnourished, with tight plastic bands that had caused severe leg injuries. Two died and two were euthanized.

The Billings Gazette reports Leachman was sentenced to five years in jail with all but 120 days suspended.

Leachman has asked a judge to allow him to serve his sentence at his…

Global March for Elephants and Rhinos

Fight for Rhinos

DeathThink it’s not your problem?

Poaching is killing our planet.

Each year over 35,000 elephants and 1000 rhinos are slaughtered. Poaching has become a pandemic; animals are killed in Africa, India, Asia…and demand for their parts spans across the globe. If we don’t act NOW, we will lose them all within a few short years.

We must restore the balance.

Poaching is killing people.

Each year poachers AND rangers are killed in the line of fire. People are also killed and hurt from terrorist attacks fundedby poaching. From the Westgate Mall attack to the kidnapping of hundreds of Nigerian girls, to the loss of lives during the 9/11 attacks in New York.

We must stop the blood flow.

As devastating as this is, there is hope. The good news is that YOU can do something about it. Yes, YOU!…

Dispite Evidence that BLM Violated Environmental Laws the Deadly Roundup Will Proceed

BLM Captives; Freedom Lost ~ by Terry Fitch of Wild Horse Freedom Federation BLM Captives; Freedom Lost ~ by Terry Fitch of Wild Horse Freedom Federation

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A federal judge has denied a well aruged request from wild horse and burro advocates to block the federal government’s plan to round up  800 wild horses in Wyoming and virtually “zeroing-out” several very significant herds.

Judge Nancy Freudenthal in Cheyenne on Thursday denied the group’s request for an injunction. The groups responded by filing an appeal with a federal appeals court in Denver.

The groups are challenging the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s plans to remove horses from the Great Divide Basin, Adobe Town and Salt Wells Creek herd management areas in southern Wyoming areas starting next month.

The groups claim the federal agency failed to follow environmental laws in planning the action.

The state of Wyoming has inappropriatly intervened in the lawsuit…

How You Can Help This Japan Dolphins Day | Care2 Causes

Life or Lunch?

3108662.largeJust as another months-long dolphin drive is set to begin in Taiji, Japan, dolphin advocates will be taking part in Japan Dolphins Day on September 1 as part of an international effort to raise awareness about their plight and encourage a future where this slaughter no longer takes place.

The award-winning documentary The Cove brought Taiji’s annual dolphin drives into the spotlight and raised international outrage over the cruel practice of rounding up thousands of dolphins and killing them for their meat every year. It also brought attention to the relationship between the slaughter and the practice of taking and selling some of these cetaceans to marine parks around the world where they’re exploited for entertainment.

The especially heartbreaking case of Angel, a rare albino calf who made headlines after she was torn from her mother’s side and taken by fishermen during a violent roundup last January, led to…

Florida Man Says He Ate 15 Threatened Tortoises and Planned to Eat 11 More

FEDS WARN OF ATTACK ON SOUTHERN BORDER

Nwo Report

For those of us who’ve been raising alarms about both the jihadist threat and the national-security vulnerability created by the Obama administration’s non-enforcement of the immigration laws, this is not a surprise — particularly less than two weeks before September 11. But it is nonetheless jarring to read. Judicial Watch has just put out this statement:

Islamic terrorist groups are operating in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez and planning to attack the United States with car bombs or other vehicle born improvised explosive devices (VBIED). High-level federal law enforcement, intelligence and other sources have confirmed to Judicial Watch that a warning bulletin for an imminent terrorist attack on the border has been issued.  Agents across a number of Homeland Security, Justice and Defense agencies have all been placed on alert and instructed to aggressively work all possible leads and sources concerning this imminent terrorist threat.

Specifically, Judicial…

Humpback whales, what do they eat?

Dear Kitty. Some blog

This video from California in the USA is called Surfer Almost Swallowed by Whale.

From eNature Blog in the USA:

What Does A Humpback Whale Really Eat For Dinner?

Posted on Thursday, August 28, 2014 by eNature

Despite the title of the video above, Humpbacks don’t eat surfers!

Eves so, that video has received lots of attention around the internet when it appeared— and for good reason.

It shows a surfer’s VERY close encounter with a humpback whale off the beaches of Santa Cruz, in Northern California.

But it’s also interesting because it’s a great close-up view of how a Humpback feeds and the sort of marine life that makes up its diet.

How To Eat Without Teeth?

Humpbacks are baleen whales and have no teeth. They feed by using the large plates of baleen in their mouths to filter out shrimp-like krill and other small creatures from the…

Fighting prostate cancer with a tomato-rich diet

CLINICALNEWS.ORG

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE:

27-Aug-2014
Men who eat over 10 portions a week of tomatoes have an 18 per cent lower risk of developing prostate cancer, new research suggests.

With 35,000 new cases every year in the UK, and around 10,000 deaths, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide.

Rates are higher in developed countries, which some experts believe is linked to a Westernised diet and lifestyle.

To assess if following dietary and lifestyle recommendations reduces risk of prostate cancer, researchers at the Universities of Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford looked at the diets and lifestyle of 1,806 men aged between 50 and 69 with prostate cancer and compared with 12,005 cancer-free men.

The NIHR-funded study, published in the medical journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, is the first study of its kind to develop a prostate cancer ‘dietary index’ which consists of dietary components – selenium, calcium…

BACKGROUND | SOURCE PETA

On Wednesday, August 15, the Pahrump Regional Planning Commission will decide whether to approve a permit that would allow serial animal abuser Karl Mitchell to keep tigers and ligers. We need your help to make sure that it does not approve the permit. Mitchell has been fined thousands of dollars and had his U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) license revoked for violating the Animal Welfare Act by, for example, cruelly withholding water as a training technique, forcing animals to live in enclosures filled with their own waste, failing to provide animals with veterinary care, and keeping large cats in cages too small for them. Mitchell is also currently under investigation by both the USDA and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for continuing to exhibit animals after the USDA revoked his exhibition license and for illegally transporting a tiger across state lines. He even shot…

SYDNEY surgeon and lecturerDr Nicolas Oddone’s job is to save lives but he showed little regard for the life of a dog he severely beat.

The oncologist, aged in his early 40s, was convicted of one count of animal cruelty in the Downing Centre Local Court last month after he bashed his then-girlfriend’s 2.9kg papillon pooch, named Prinni.

The former girlfriend told The Daily Telegraph the attack happened moments after she asked Oddone to be more gentle with her dog at his Woolwich apartment on June 10 last year.

“It was shocking … no animal deserves that,” she said. “Every animal deserves a basic level of treatment.” Prinni suffered 14 fractures to 12 ribs, massive internal bleeding, liver damage and a partially-collapsed lung.

Chemical Pollution and Climate Change Threatening 1,300 Species of Birds

Queensland stakeholders welcome feds inquiry on Wild Rivers Act

More than 1,300 species of birds are threatened with extinction, with chemical pollution and climate change two major culprits. Because of these and other dangers, the status of most of the endangered species is deteriorating, according to BirdLife International.

In the majority of cases, the blame lies with humans, with loss of habitat and chemical contamination of the environment posing a serious threat to birds. The destruction of wetlands, forests and plains has also diminished birds’ food supply, according to Environmental Health News.

WHE Challenges the BLM

A “challenge” has been issued by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the form of a “Request for Applications” (RFA) to veterinarians, scientists, universities, pharmaceutical companies, and other researchers to develop new techniques and protocols for implementing population growth-suppression methods of wild horses.  The submission deadline for applications is May 7, 2014

The budget for fiscal year 2015 is $80.2 million for the wild horse and burro program. BLM plans to use the additional funds for “population control.”

Wild Horse Education will submit a challenge of it’s own to the agency.

“Wild horse and burro ‘management’ is an American disgrace,” stated Wild Horse Education President Laura Leigh “Instead of addressing the disease the BLM is simply looking for another band aide. It’s more than past…

Action Alert: Contact Washington Governor to End the Slaugter of the Huckleberry Pack Wolves

Having killed one Huckleberry pup, WDFW continues aerial gunning: http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/aug2514a/

Below is an example of a letter to WA Governor Inslee. You can contact him at governor@gov.wa.gov and/or 360-902-4111. The points elucidated in the letter make it clear that WDFW is repeating the dishonest and secretive behavior that led to the slaughter of 7 Wedge Pack wolves in 2012.

The bulleted points in the letter were provide by Amaroq Weiss at the Center for Biological Diversity.

Let’s see if we can make enough noise to stop this killing…

Thanks, W

Dear Governor Inslee –

Please intervene and prevent further slaughter of Huckleberry pack wolves. The WDFW has been dishonest and misleading in its handling of this issue and it is by no means apparent, due to WDFW’s secretive behavior, that nonlethal deterrents and techniques were properly employed or even if they were used in good conscience…

“Defenders” of Wildlife Supports Wolf Hunting!

Should wolves be hunted?

Suzanne Stone
Defenders of Wildlife is not opposed to hunting of wolves. We represent hunters as well as other conservationists and animal rights people. We have a very wide spectrum of people that are our members, but we’ve never been opposed to hunting. As long as it’s hunting done in a manner that other species are hunted, so that it’s not to exterminate the species, but actually to only take surplus from that population. And right now the wolf population in the Northern Rockies is still pretty small. For example, in Idaho we have somewhere around five or six hundred adult wolves, and if you compare that with things like mountain lions, we have over 3,000 mountain lions. We have 20,000 black bears…

Letter from the Range, Laura Leigh, WHE President

This time of year we are particularly busy with ground work. What WHE does is a “bottom to top” approach that focuses on key factors in a site specific manner. This makes our ability to respond to emails etc rather limited for several months at a time. We are in one of those times.

In a simplistic overview the majority of what we are doing is gathering comparative information over time to demonstrate the areas where inappropriate action, or no action, has created near crisis situations. You can view some of what has been loaded on the Range page. But on that page you can also…

Wolves and Writing

Huckleberry pups, June 2012 Huckleberry pups, June 2012. Photo from WDFW website.

It’s a disconcerting deja vu. Two years ago we fought hard to prevent the killing of the Wedge pack for their supposed role in livestock depredations. But the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Department (WDFW) ignored public opinion as they spent over $76,000 in a full scale war against the Wedge pack wolves, killing seven of its members.

An OPD article dated November 14, 2012 quotes WDFW spokesperson Madonna Luers as saying, “Our director (Phil Anderson) has said that he never wants to do this again… The social acceptance is just not there.”

Mr. Anderson must have forgotten making this statement because now the Huckleberry pack is being targeted under his authorization. One member, reportedly a pup, has been shot already and three more are in the scopes.

I spoke today with Bob Ferris, Executive Director of Cascadia Wildlands about the issue. Bob…
