Sadly, behind other closed doors – not of homes but of laboratories – there will also be many other cats and kittens suffering in silence. This time last year, one of our investigators, Suzie, was undercover at a MSD Animal Health laboratory and reflects on the time she spent with the kittens used in research. Please read her words and take action to stop this suffering by signing up to our Thunderclap for World Cat Day to raise vital awareness about the investigation and to end these cruel and unnecessary practices.

Torneo de Lazo: Live horses eviscerated in Mexico for fun

~ ~ ~ Please Sign Petition ~ ~ ~

Tuesday's Horse

Rodeo horses being dragged to a rodeo event in Mexico.

The news of abused horses has recently become overwhelming.

Rarely a week goes by without hearing about a new cruelty scandal where horses are the victims.

But the worst kind of violence against horses happens in broad daylight and in public. Children are witnessing the killing of animals for fun.

The latest blood feast comes from the state of Yucatan, in Mexico, where a “rodeo” type event called “Torneo de Lazo” where bulls ram horses and eviscerate [1] them.

Horses don’t die immediately, rather they are left bleeding on the ground with their intestines hanging loose.

According to Avaaz, the horses “usually collapse and while still alive continue to get trampled by bulls and other horses during the length of this violent and cruel event where horsemen try to lasso the running, charging bulls (the bulls are specifically bred and trained to ram horses).”

Approximately 400,000 people in and around Toledo, Ohio are being warned not to drink their tap water after high levels of a dangerous toxin were discovered in the water supply Saturday, according to the Toledo-Lucas County Department of Health.

The toxin is called microcystin, the high levels of which were caused by massive increases in algae on Lake Erie. The increases in algae, called “algae blooms”, are poisonous if consumed — causing abnormal liver function, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, numbness, and dizziness. Boiling the water doesn’t help — in fact, itincreases the presence of the toxin.

Troy, MO: Family fights to keep their dog after being given 10 days to “get rid of” him

Bless the Bullys

A family in Troy, Missouri is fighting to keep their pit bull after they were told by police that they had to “get rid of” him because the municipal code prohibits “pit bulls” from residing in the city. The Frank family received a notice from Troy police on Thursday that they had 10 days to remove the dog from the city or risk facing further consequences.

The Franks got their dog, Moby, several years ago, and they say he helps their son, Logan, deal with autism. They even have a letter from their son’s autism specialist that supports their claim.

Section 205.065 of the Troy city code states as follows:

It shall be unlawful to keep, harbor, own or in any way possess within the corporate limits of the City of Troy, Missouri, any pit bull dog, provided that pit bull dogs residing in the City on the effective date…

The crowd was jubilant. Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa waved triumphantly to the thousands who filled the open air convention center. He walked down the red carpet just a few meters away from us to thunderous applause.

We were honored guests at the inauguration of Salvadoran President Salvador Sanchez Ceren and Vice President Oscar Ortiz. Both the incoming President and Vice President had been Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) military commanders during the civil war. They had fought the oligarchy for power militarily for more than a decade. On March 9, they won at the…

As investigations into the sad case of Nehro continue, a whole sport must come to terms with the need for better regulation

Though it contained less than 10 minutes of grainy, expletive-laden hidden-camera footage, a video released by Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in March dealt perhaps the most serious blow to the US racing industry in recent years. This was no inconsiderable feat, given how many broadsides the industry has endured over the treatment of its animals.

In 2012 a New York Times exposé, Mangled Horses, Maimed Jockeys, brought front-page visibility to disturbing trends including the fact that at the time, 24 racehorses suffered fatal breakdowns across America each week, a rate far higher than in most of the rest…

Sheldon: The Final Chapter?

Wild Horse Education

9/11/2013 Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge 9/11/2013 Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge

“The first day of operations were postponed. It is unclear at this time if operations will begin tomorrow as significant weather has moved into the area bringing a possibility of lightening,” reads the first line in the observation log for the final removal of Sheldon mustangs.

Sheldon is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as part of their national system of wildlife refuges. Sheldon has no “multiple use” mandate like the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). There are no domestic livestock permittees, no drill pads for gas or oil. Sheldon is the last example of an intact Great Basin eco-system in the west. Even though mustangs and burros inhabited the area long before Sheldon was established in 1931, and horses and burros are manageable to the extent that the eco-system remains intact, those that manage the refuge created a plan to…

She died in hospital on Saturday.

Ebola has killed 256 people in Sierra Leone.

A total of 826 have died in West Africa since the outbreak began in February.
