The same week that a fire swept through the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, destroying millions of priceless artifacts, the news broke that about 4,900 miles away in Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion had also lost about 90 percent of its collection.

But it wasn’t because of a fire, and it wasn’t historical treasures that are gone from this museum. Thieves stole 7,000 live arachnids, insects and lizards. It could be the largest live insect heist in history, according to the museum’s CEO, Dr. John Cambridge. He, as well as police, believe it was an inside job by current or former employees.

Footage from security cameras shows three people leaving the museum on Aug. 22 with containers that were presumably filled with the arthropods, which are estimated to be worth about $40,000. The thieves also stole the logs used to keep track of the insects. Staff uniforms had been “stabbed into the wall with knives,” the Associated Press reports.

Spirit, the injured animal, which has since been transported to SoCal Equine Hospital in Norco, California, was initially noticed on Wednesday of last week wandering around the Inland Empire’s Reche Canyon where hundreds of burros are known to gather. An animal services officer reportedly was able to take a photo that revealed that the arrow was gone, but sadly, the wounds it left behind remain.
“This is our third time trying to capture him; third time’s the charm,” noted non-profit organization DonkeyLand on its Facebook page. “We don’t know if a piece of the broken arrow is in his head or eardrum, we don’t know if he has an infection, we don’t know if he will require surgery, but he is in good hands with our surgeon Dr. Wan.”

“Three outraged animal lovers have come forward to offer a reward for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this horrible act of animal cruelty by shooting this innocent free-roaming wild burro with an arrow. Everybody needs a safe way to give information about something they know or even suspect without fear of retaliation for telling the truth,” the post continued stating that the generous reward is now at $3,000. “Help be the voice for these innocent animals today.”
Anyone with information regarding this case can send anonymous tips by emailing dhorn@riversidesheriff.org or calling Riverside County Department of Animal Services at (951) 358-7387.
Longtime animal advocate and former game show host Bob Barker recently donated to DonkeyLand to help it in its efforts to purchase 460 acres to be used for a sanctuary for the wild donkeys.
“Our wild burro emergency rescues involve safely capturing, providing onsite first-aid treatment, transporting to the hospital, rehabilitating, castrating the males rescued, then releasing the burros back to the wild with their family, as we never want to take away their freedom. Ultimately that is our goal but, in some cases, the ideal situation does not always happen, and the burro becomes a permanent resident of DonkeyLand,” the organization notes on its website explaining that most of their rescued donkeys have usually suffered terrible abuse by the hands of their cruel owners. “We are a forever home for those who can’t be released back to the wild because of a traumatic car accident, injury, illness or a special needs situation. They come to us traumatized, desperate and betrayed. With us, they find love, safety, compassion, dignity, trust, hope and a new beginning.”

Wildlife officials in Alberta, Canada, are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the poacher or poachers who illegally killed a cougar and abandoned its carcass west of Cochrane.
The Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement issued the appeal for help, along with a heartbreaking photo of the dead animal on its Facebook page over the weekend.
“In Alberta, it is unlawful to abandon the skin of a mountain lion that has been hunted,” noted the post which in turn brought attention to a bigger problem, the fact that hunting cougars in Alberta is still legal under specific guidelines. “Furthermore, the cougar season was closed in the relevant cougar management area at the time of the offense.”
Alberta reportedly has regulated its cougar population since 1969 allowing for an annual quota of up to 155 animals to be hunted each year. Terrible!
According to the post, which, as of this morning has been shared more than 6,000 times, a pair of green and brown work gloves were also found on the scene where a campfire was left burning.

The person or persons found responsible for this crime could face up to a $50,000.00 fine and or one year in jail.
People with information that may lead to the arrest of those responsible, can confidentially contact the 24-hour Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800 or online via its new Report A Poacher website.
“Phoning is still the fastest way to reach an officer,” the department noted, “the new website can be used to report issues that are less urgent.

A false Craigslist ad reportedly resulted in the theft of dozens of animals from a wildlife sanctuary in Southwest Miami-Dade, Florida, over the weekend.
According to WSVN, seven lemurs, five marmosets, four monkeys, seven birds and 13 tortoises were stolen from the We Care Wildlife Sanctuary sometime between 10:00 PM Saturday evening and 10:00 AM Sunday morning.

People with any information about this theft should immediately call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS or 305-471-8477.
It is especially urgent because when WAN contacted the Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers hotline this morning, while we were told that they could not confirm whether any tips have been received yet, there was an indication that none had been made.
Our call to the South District Police Station in Cutler Bay to try to secure more information was also deterred when an officer who was unaware of the case told us that, regardless, they would not be able to share any details with us unless we had a case number and went into the station to make the request.
As per WSVN, the fabricated Craigslist ad stated, “Free exotic animals. I’m no longer staying in business I can’t take care of these animals. I have lemurs, marmosets, tortoise, African grays, macaws, horses etc. First come first serve. We’re a sanctuary going out of business. If I’m not there just go around back and take what you want.”
“Some of these animals need medication. “It’s sad because, unfortunately, some of them might die,” volunteer Cindy Robert told WSVN while pleading for the animals return. “Please, just bring them back because they need to be safe and cared for properly.”
As per authorities, the owner of the animal sanctuary recently moved and no surveillance cameras had been installed.
Again, if you have any information on this theft, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS or 305-471-8477. Callers can remain anonymous and may become eligible for a $1,000.00 reward. What’s most important though is that the stolen animals are returned quickly and safely. Please help by calling the tip line if you have any information.

I was informed by an animal protection organization that a shark aquarium is planned in Sinsheim. Sinsheim has 35,000 inhabitants and is located in the south of Germany.

An investor wants to build the biggest shark aquarium in Europe: “Shark City”.

Dives in the basins are planned, but also a so-called touch pool for touching the animals.

My first thought was: in which century do these cave-men live? But with thoughts we can not save animals, actions maybe more helpful!

I wrote and sent this letter to the mayor.

Animals Are Dying At Sea And No One Can See Their Pain

It’s being called one of the “worst live shipping disasters” in Australia’s history — and no one can even get close enough to see exactly what’s happened.

The Statesman, a ship carrying 200 cows through the Bass Strait, encountered rough seas and severe weather on Saturday night. It’s been reported that most, if not all, of the animals were being kept without shelter on the deck of the ship.

Fifty-six animals, more than a quarter of the cows, died of injuries in just 24 hours. Some were in such bad shape, they had to be euthanized upon reaching port in Victoria.

This latest massive failure, far from the first, shows just how far the live export industry will go to make a buck. Thousands of animals are routinely shipped long distances in the live export business and longterm suffering and painful deaths along the way are just part of the routine. In January, 13,000 animals were stranded for days at sea.

“That so many animals perished in rough seas in under 24 hours, also indicates the appalling suffering and terror the surviving animals must have endured,” wrote Animals Australia, an organization that is calling for a stop to the live shipping madness, on Facebook. “These animals are among thousands of sheep, dairy and beef cattle sent on ships each year across the notoriously dangerous Bass Strait. They are subjected to weather extremes, rough seas and spray during the crossing — only to be slaughtered when they reach the mainland.”
