Cosmic Dawn: Hubble Telescope Photographs Oldest Galaxy Ever Found In The Universe

13/12/2012 08:58 GMT

Astronomers have photographed what could be the most ancient galaxy ever spotted in the universe.

The picture is said to capture the “cosmic dawn” when the first true galaxies formed after the initial creation of the universe.

Images taken with the Hubble Space Telescopehave captured galaxies which are thought to have existed just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang.

The galaxy – given the catchy moniker UDFj-39546284 – formed within 380 million years of the universe itself, researchers said.

Six other distant galaxies captured by Hubble existed within 600 million years of the universe’s creation, it is thought. Light from the galaxies has taken more than 13 billion years to reach the Earth.

They were photographed using an infrared camera to study the Hubble Ultra Deep…

Earth our Home too : White Tigers’ Myth

White tiger

Contrary to popular belief, white tigers are merely a genetic color mutation of the Bengal tiger, and do not constitute a separate species. At this time, populations of Bengal tigers are estimated to be between 1,300 and 1,500. But according to zoologists, there is only a 1 in 10,000 chance that a Bengal tiger will be born with the white genetic mutation.

In the past 100 years, there have only been 12 confirmed reports of white tiger sightings in the wild, the last of which occurred in 1959.

Due to their coloration, it is believed that white tigers are disadvantaged in the wild since their stark markings make them far more visible to prey in the dark jungle.

In captivity, white tigers are achieved through selective breeding, as both parents need to be carriers of the white gene in order to produce white offspring. Because of this, many zoos have…

Who is the Daddy? Earth or Homo-Sapiens?

The functioning of earth is far complicated than the neural networks of our brain. Every micro to gigantic processes happens around are interconnected with each other. Either direct or indirect, one activity has its effect on several others. We humans right from our creation are exploring and trying to unveil these processes of earth. How far successful are we? Even scientists can give only a prediction as an answer.

EARTH has so many secrets beyond our understandings.

I may throw a pack of plastic waste or my vehicle may emit some carbon components in air, which can be cause death to a seal in Antarctica. Neither of I and the Seal knew each other before. There are so many complex processes happening around us every milliseconds and evolution is happening continuous. We claim to be the supreme species on earth, yet I say we are not controlling anything happening in…

New Mercy For Animals Video Called “Vulgar,” and “Outrageous”

Michelle Neff

In response to the report that 50% of chicken is contaminated with fecal matter, Mercy for Animals released a new video. The PSA is hilarious as it is informative, clearly making the point that if you’re tired of eating crap (literally), then you should choose a plant based lifestyle.

As stated on Mercy For Animals website:

Recent studies show that nearly half of all chicken purchased in supermarkets is contaminated with fecal matter (aka shit). In 2011, the USDA reported that 90 percent of defects the agency found in chicken carcasses at slaughter plants involved “visible fecal contamination that was missed by company employees.”

Underwater sonar linked to 2008 whales deaths

By Danielle Elliot

September 27, 2013, 2:10 PM

When about 100 whales ended up in the shallow waters of Madagascar‘s Loza Lagoon system in May and June 2008, scientists suspected that underwater sonar played a role.

Now, an independent panel of scientists has confirmed that there is a link between the sonar, used by Exxon Mobil in late May 2008 to map the ocean floor for oil, and the death of three-quarters of the displaced melon-headed whales.

When marine animals end up in areas where they wouldn’t naturally swim, such as shallow waters or on shore, it is called stranding. Stranding refers to any displaced marine animal, whether found dead or alive.

This is not the first study to confirm a link between sonar…

First Light Productions

A short film follows the rescue of an orangutan caught in a snare, his rehabilitation and release back into the wild.

Efforts expended by groups such as International Animal Rescue to save these creatures are extraordinary. Footage of the ape moving through the trees near the end says it all.

Boycotting products containing palm oil is one thing we can all do to help the animals in Indonesia.

Eco Preservation : Sheperd Dogs helps for Cheetah Conservation

Ranchers in the USA need to put this in action to protect the wolves and their cattle!

Winding through the parched Namibian farmland, Bonzo, an Anatolian shepherd dog, has a singular focus: protecting his herd of goats from lurking predators.

He pads along, sniffing the air and marking the scrubby landscape, just like a bodyguard ready to ward off any threat to his charges, which he considers family.

“They’re not pets. They’re not allowed to be pets,” said Bonzo’s owner farmer Retha Joubert.

The breed descends from ancient livestock dogs used thousands of years ago in what is now central Turkey. And they not only save sheep and goats, but have handed a lifeline to Namibia’s decimated cheetah numbers by reducing conflicts between farmers and predators.

“The dogs are protecting the flock in such a way that the farmers don’t have to kill predators,” said Laurie Marker of the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) which breeds the dogs near the northern city Otjiwarongo.

“It’s a non-lethal predator control…

Republican solution to wildfires: Sell the trees!

House Republicans have a cunning plan for tackling the wildfires that have been ravaging the American West this fire season: They want to allow loggers to haul away the trees before they burn.

No forests means no forest fires, see?

The Restoring Healthy Forests for Healthy Communities Act was approved mostly along party lines by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives on Friday. The bill would more than double logging nationwide and turn some forestlands into pasturelands.

But the bill will never become law. President Obama has vowed to veto it if it ever reaches his desk.

Earth our Home too : Bacteria : Trillions of Friends

When we think of bacteria we usually think of something harmful that makes us sick. This is wrong. Most bacteria are not harmful and many bacteria are beneficial. We cannot live without them. There are the bacteria around us and inside us. These are the good bacteria.

Bacteria are among the oldest living things on the Earth. Bacteria have been around for about 4 billion years. This means that bacteria were the dominating life form on Earth for about 3.5 billion years.

Many scientists still believe that bacteria are still the dominant life form. It is estimated that there kg by kg there are more bacteria on the Earth than all other life forms combined.  This includes trees and plants animals and humans, insects and fish.

There are bacteria all over the Earth. There are bacteria on land and in water.  There are bacteria in the soil and deep underground.  There are bacteria flying…

Documentary : A World Without Water (must watch)

world without water

As less and less water is available, you have yet another problem being added and that is the problem of privatization. There are companies now saying why don’t we bottle it, mine it, divert it, sell it, commodify it. That greed of privatization, we believe, will be much worse than climate change and everything else that has left us with the water crisis. The world is running out of its most precious resource. True Vision’s timely film tells of the personal tragedies behind the mounting privatisation of water supplies.

More than a billion people across the globe don’t have access to safe water. Every day 3900 children die as a result of insufficient or unclean water supplies. The situation can only get worse as water gets ever more scarce.

US to destroy ivory stocks in effort to stop illegal elephant poaching

With echoes of the past – by President Moi in 1989 – the United States now tries to halt a hugely destructive and wasteful practice

From the Guardian : The Obama administration said on Monday it would destroy all 6m tons of its stocks of seized ivory – potentially millions in contraband – stepping up efforts to crush an illegal trade that has brought wild elephants to the brink of extinction.

The ivory destruction, announced at a White House event addressed by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, was part of a broader effort by the administration on Monday to elevate wildlife trafficking from narrow conservation interest to urgent national security concern.

Destroying the ivory would signal that Obama was committed to stopping illegal trafficking in wildlife that has devastated species such as elephants and rhinos, and is a growing security threat, officials told the audience.

“Rising demand for ivory is fuelling…
