Wild Horse Races at Rodeos

Straight from the Horse's Heart

By Debbie Coffey, V.P. & Dir. of Wild Horse Affairs, Wild Horse Freedom Federation             Copyright 2014                 All Rights Reserved.

Reading the article (below) that was in the Wyoming news, you might wonder how many “pastures” contain “wild horses” that have had “little, if any, contact with humans?”  It could very well be that only “unbroken” horses are used in these Wild Horse Races.  (But, should any horse be treated in the way they’re treated in Wild Horse Races?)

You might wonder if any of our wild horses, or their offspring, might in some instances have ever been used in any rodeo Wild Horse Races.  After the BLM sells wild horses in bulk sales (many horses, often by the truckload), it seems they don’t know where the horses go.  Some wild horse mares may have even been used to breed bucking stock.

It seems…

Last 250-300 Wolverines in Lower-48 Denied Protection

GarryRogers Nature Conservation

“WASHINGTON – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today denied protections for the rare wolverine under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), potentially jeopardizing the species’ long-term survival in the lower-48 states. Although the Service proposed to list wolverines as “threatened” in 2013 citing a primary threat of reduced habitat and range from climate change, the agency today said wolverines do not warrant a listing due to uncertainty about the effects of climate change on the animals, a claim disputed by conservation groups.”

GR:  When a species’ numbers get this low, there can be no denying that it is endangered.  Without protection, trapping and habitat disruption by human activity will extinguish this fine example of nature’s art.  Has the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service no feelings for wildlife?

UK – The DHT Gets a Major Boost for Non Animal Testing Diabetes Research

UK – The DHT Gets a Major Boost for Non Animal Testing Diabetes Research

The Dr Hadwen Trust (DHT) is delighted to announce it will fund a three-year programme at the Glasgow Caledonian University Skin Research Tissue Bank (STB) to provide human skin tissue and cells that can be used for multiple studies related to diabetes.

Traditionally, strains of genetically modified mice and rats are bred for diabetes research with over 92,000 animals used per year worldwide. Using human tissue gives a much better idea of how drugs can be developed and also helps save the lives of many animals.

The Glasgow Caledonian University STB currently supports several different projects into diabetic wound healing, vascular problems with diabetes, diabetic retinopathy and cellular ageing. The DHT funding will help them to develop new types of human cell models that can replace animal experimentation.

Stopping the Two Kinds of Depression

Lantern Timeglass Journal

TIMEGLASS JOURNAL – Health Editorial Article by Jim Lantern – 1:30 p.m. CT Tuesday 12 August 2014

The recent death of actor Robin Williams, apparent suicide apparently caused by major severe depression, is causing the general public and news media to take increased or new interest in the subject of depression. Most likely, Robbin Williams suffered from Bipolar I, or Bipolar II (more depressive than manic). Many famous celebrities and creative people, including actress Carrie Fisher, suffer from Bipolar Disorder. Me, too.

It is my opinion that the best people to give advice for treating and stopping all kinds of depression are those people who have experienced depression and know from experience what helps to reduce or stop it. I do mean rather than doctors who have only studied depression and have never experienced it. Of course, if you can find a doctor who has experienced it, then you’ll be…

Quote of the Day: Animal Cruelty Apparently Increases Popularity of Church #WisconsinShame

The Paw Report

“This has been our tradition for 44 years. This is our big draw for our parish picnic. If we don’t have the pig rassle down here, we don’t hardly see any people come to our church,” said Bruce Learman, pig rassle co-chair.

Original photo without captions by Tom McPhee, taken at the pig rassle, August 10, 2014.

Over the weekend, St. Patrick’s Parish in Wisconsin hosted it’s 44th annual “pig rassle,” in which participants — young and old — “rassled” pigs in mud and barrels. Almost 40 pigs were forced to participate, and over 60,000 people signed the petition against the event. A group of protesters were there to document the event and to bear witness to the cruelty. In a day or two, I’ll be posting the observations and experiences of the protesters who attended.

Regarding the above quote, I have some thoughts. Justifying that animal cruelty…

They’re going to run out of…

“Are you listening ?” campaign ~ Please read and share !

Great Cats of the "World"

Hey All,

As a part of our endeavour to keep raising awareness on the plight of Tigers, we are proud to launch the “Are you listening ?” campaign.

Needless to say, a briefing or orientation programme for guests of Tiger Trackers on the dos’ & don’ts on a Jungle safari is just as important to us as the well being of our Tigers.

Tiger conservation has enough challenges like illegal grazing, encroachment, loss of habitat, village relocation & poaching already. Rowdy tourism can only make matters worse. Good responsible tourism is most often the key here. If done right, it can go a long way in passive protection of wildlife as well as biodiversity, providing sustainable livelihoods to local communities, and of course ensure we tourists get to continue enjoying blissful interactions with wild animals, safe in the knowledge that they are both well treated…

Ace Bourke's Blog

Christian was born on the 12th August 1969 in Ilfracombe Zoo, Devon, UK. As most of you are aware, we don’t know what happened to Christian.  He was last seen by George Adamson in 1973 setting off in the direction of Meru National Park, Kenya. We like to assume he created his own pride and lived happily for quite a few more years.  Free.  Lions live approximately 10-12 years in the wild, although up to 18 years in captivity.

These photographs are stills taken from my Super 8 footage on our visit to Christian in 1972.  I never saw Christian (or George Adamson) again.

I don’t advise kissing lions – unless you know them very very well! George Adamson loved lions above all other animals, especially their capacity for love and trustworthiness.  However, he did say “why should we expect lions to be more trustworthy (and predictable) than humans?”.
