PETITION: Justice for Emaciated Elderly Elephant Dying from Extreme Torture

ladyfreethinker.org

PETITION TARGET: Sri Lanka’s Minister of Tourism Development, John Amaratunga

A starved, overworked and dispirited 70-year-old elephant named Tikiri has died after decades in chains.

Last month, Tikiri collapsed and lay helpless in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Her emaciated body could no longer support her brutal work schedule, which involved walking for hours at a time with her legs shackled in chains in the annual Perahera Festival. And now, she has succumbed to a lifetime of abuse.

When working, her body was hidden underneath an elegant costume and her face covered by a mask. This way, nobody could see her bony body and desperate eyes as she was forced to walk night after night in a loud, crowded ceremony.

“She is one of the 60 elephants who must work in the service of the Perahera Festival in Sri Lanka this year. Tikiri joins in the parade early every evening until late at night every night for ten consecutive nights, amidst the noise, the fireworks, and smoke,” wrote Lek Chailert, founder of Save Elephant Foundation, in a Facebook post.

Amidst massive public outcry, Tikiri was removed from her remaining festival duties.

Tourism and wildlife minister Amaratunga said in a statement, “Considering what has transpired, I have ordered officials to initiate an inquiry and ascertain how and why an elephant in such poor health was used in the perehara (pageant) and to take necessary action against those responsible.”

But Tikiri was not alone. Hundreds of elephants in Sri Lanka are enslaved and forced to work for their entire lifetimes. In Southeast Asia, approximately 3,000 elephants are imprisoned; many face beatings and other violent abuse.

We must speak out to save elephants like Tikiri from a life of neglect and abuse.

Sign this petition urging Minister of Tourism Development Amaratunga to stop forcing elephants to work in parades for human entertainment, so no more innocent animals suffer and die as slaves like Tikiri did.

Potent Neurotoxin Added to Popular Spice

Chemical Free Life

So it turns out there is something you can add to the popular spice turmeric to make it bright yellow–something that consumers seem to be big on. The problem is, the ‘something’ you add is lead–a potent neurotoxin that is dangerous at any level due to its link with brain and heart disease and cognitive damage.

Results from a new study reveal that turmeric — a commonly used spice for food and celebratory body paints and often sold as a healing agent and health booster– is sometimes adulterated with a lead-laced chemical compound in Bangladesh, one of the world’s predominant turmeric-growing regions.

Are you ingesting adulterated turmeric?

If you live in Bangladesh there is an increased likelihood you are ingesting turmeric that is adulterated with lead. (At last testing, 30 percent of pregnant women in the area had elevated lead levels in their blood.)

If you live outside Bangladesh…

Sign the Petition Stop Sending U.S. Military Dogs to Jordan for them to Starve and Abuse

change.org
Oli P started this petition to Department of Justice

The United States keeps sending our military bomb sniffing Dogs to the country of Jordan, where a Federal investigation revealed are so greatly starved and neglected, that many died, and those who don’t barely survive.

The federal investigation recommendation to the United States Department of Justice was to stop sending dogs until there was a sustainability plan put in place, but the Department of Justice has not taken action on this recommendation.

See additional information about the investigation Here.

Despite spending “millions of dollars” training and dispatching the dogs, State Department officials failed to ensure their health and welfare, said the report, which was launched after a hotline complaint about the dogs’ treatment.

According to the report, the State Department’s loose regulation and lack of concrete policies were a big factor in the dogs’ mistreatment.

The State Department couldn’t provide investigators detailed information for the dogs in other partner countries besides Jordan, and there often aren’t any written agreements with the countries outlining how to care for the dogs.

We are asking the United States Department Of Justice to:

Stop sending additional dogs to Jordan until policies, a plan and assurances are put into place to properly monitor and ensure the well-being of those military dogs.
Investigate and provide investigators detailed information about the dogs and their well-being in the other partner countries besides Jordan.

Let’s ensure the protection and care of the U.S. military dogs that work hard and risk their lives every day, serving our and our partner countries.

Sign Petition: These Dogs Are American Heroes, So Why Is Our Government Letting Them Die Painful Deaths

thepetitionsite.com

After a whistleblower told the U.S. government that the Explosive Detection Canines (EDCs) were being neglected, the inspector general’s (IG) office for the State Department began to investigate. What they discovered was horrifying.

At least ten bomb-sniffing dogs given to Jordan over the past 8 years have perished. Some of the dogs were young and healthy pups when they left but died shortly after they arrived in the Middle Eastern nation.

Zoe, for example, a 2-year-old female Belgian Malinois, died of heatstroke just 9 months after she arrived. Another dog, Mencey, a 3-year-old of the same bread, got so sick in Jordan from a tick-borne disease that she had to be returned to the United States for treatment. He died shortly afterward. Other dogs were found to be parasite ridden, emaciated, and lacking in proper medical attention. In light of their investigation, IG’s office determined that no more dogs should be sent to Amman. Yet, despite the initial complaint and the devastating findings of the IG’s report, dogs are still being sent.

These dogs are American heroes. They keep us and our allies safe by doing the jobs that are too dangerous for humans. The least we could do is make sure that they are well taken care of and have happy, healthy lives.

If Jordan or any other country that receives American EDCs cannot treat them humanely then they shouldn’t be allowed to have them. It’s just that simple.

Please sign the petition and demand that the U.S. State Department stop giving dogs to countries that can’t take care of them.

Disinfectant, Other Chemicals in Tap Water Linked with Cancer

Chemical Free Life

Previous scientific tests have revealed that public tap water may contain one or more contaminants that have been linked with serious health problems in humans.  Now researchers have done the math to estimate the risk of drinking contaminated tap water. Depending on the source where your community’s water comes from, your tap water may contain nitrates and trihalomethanes (the latter results from disinfectant chemicals reacting with water).  These chemicals are associated with an increased risk of rectal, colon, and bladder cancers.  Other problematic chemicals that have been found in tap water include arsenic and radioactive contaminants.  The types and levels of contaminants in tap water depend on the source of where your water comes from.

What is the risk from chemical compounds contaminating your tap water?

Exposure to multiple contaminants over time can have a cumulative effect on your health. The more contaminants we consume through water —…

It’s unclear why Senator Perdue of Georgia blocked the unanimous consent vote. It is as unclear as why the majority of Congress want to sell the country out to upper caste India who, in majority, stomp upon Americans with no qualms, just as they stomp upon the Dalit (untouchables) in their own country. The upper caste of India think they are reincarnated to stomp on everyone else. America was created by the equivalent of India’s Dalits-untouchables! Any immigrants from India should be ONLY those persecuted in India, like the Dalits and not the persecutors! America is supposed to be for the persecuted not for the persecutors. Billions of Wild Birds have Disappeared: Study

FIREPAW, Inc.

A disturbing new scientific study published in the Science journal has reported that there are nearly 3 billion fewer wild birds in the air than in 1970.  (The new study focuses on the drop in sheer numbers of birds, not extinctions.) The bird population in the United States and Canada had an estimated 10.1 billion birds nearly half a century ago, and has fallen 29% to about 7.2 billion birds (source: AP).

“People need to pay attention to the birds around them because they are slowly disappearing. One of the scary things about the results is that it is happening right under our eyes. We might not even notice it until it’s too late.”

Pillsbury Flour Recalled Due to Salmonella Risk

ecowatch.com
Olivia Rosane

More than 12,000 cases of Pillsbury brand flour have been recalled due to a potential Salmonella contamination, Food Safety News reported Sunday.

The recall was first announced Friday night on the websites of Publix and Winn-Dixie, two grocery stores that carried the product. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) then tweeted out a recall notice Monday.

The recall was issued voluntarily by Pillsbury owner Hometown Food Company and affects around 12,185 cases of Pillsbury Unbleached All Purpose Flour with lot codes of 8 292 and a best-by date of April 19, 2020 or 8 293 and a best-by date of April 20, 2020, CNN reported.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for a refund,” Publix wrote in a recall notice reported by Food Safety News.

Neither grocery store’s recall notice mentioned how or when the flour became contaminated. The Winn-Dixie announcement said that there had been no reports of illness associated with the product so far.

Hometown Food Company bought Pillsbury’s baking and desserts product in September, 2018, USA Today reported.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) used the recall as a teachable moment on the dangers of eating uncooked flour.

It retweeted the recall with a link to an article on the dangers of raw dough. Most customers think that eating dough is dangerous because of the presence of uncooked eggs, but the FDA explained that flour itself can be contaminated.

“Flour is derived from a grain that comes directly from the field and typically is not treated to kill bacteria,” senior advisor in FDA’s Office of Food Safety Leslie Smoot, Ph.D. said. If animals relieve themselves in a field, for example, nothing has been done to the flour between harvesting and purchase to kill those bacteria.

In 2016, dozens of people learned this the hard way when they came down with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O121. The FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local authorities investigated the outbreak and identified the bacterium making people sick in flour that had been used in dough eaten raw by some of the patients. In the end, ten million pounds of flour were recalled, the FDA said.

If you love cookie-dough ice cream, don’t worry; the FDA says that commercial brands should be made with treated flour and pasteurized eggs.

Owls’ Skulls Cut Open at Johns Hopkins: Take Action Now!

It’s a basement torture chamber.

Documents obtained by PETA reveal that Johns Hopkins experimenter Shreesh Mysore cuts into the skulls of barn owls, inserts electrodes into their brains, forces them to look at screens for hours a day, and bombards them with noises and lights—and pretends that doing this will tell us something about attention-deficit disorder in humans.

one owl used in the experiment
This owl is one of many imprisoned in Shreesh Mysore’s basement laboratory, where he cuts into their skulls and screws metal devices onto their heads in curiosity-driven experiments that have no relevance for human health.

Funded by Johns Hopkins University with more than $1 million, Mysore intends to use 50 to 60 barn owls in just the current set of painful experiments. He’s also received more than $1.3 million from the National Institutes of Health to torment these owls and other animals.

button

Six owls are just for his students to practice surgery on and then kill.

What He Does to Owls
Mysore cuts into owls’ skulls to expose their brains. Then, he screws and glues metal devices onto their heads. The owls endure two to three invasive surgeries before Mysore uses them in experiments. These birds—who are nocturnal hunters who would fly great distances in their natural habitat—are forced into plastic tubes so cramped that they can’t move their wings while Mysore bombards them with sounds and lights and measures their brain activity. For some experiments, he restrains fully conscious owls for up to 12 hours. During these experiments, he pokes electrodes around in the brains of the fully conscious birds, mutilating their brain tissue so severely that they become “unusable” to him—at which point he kills them.

Mysore admits that his experiments are painful for the owls, yet in his grant application for the experiments, he provides scant information on any pain medication that would be administered.

All the owls are killed at the end of the experiments.

barn owl

Mysore claims that his experiments could help humans, but owls have well-developed auditory and visual systems that are specialized in target selection (unlike humans). Bombarding these animals with artificial stimulation while their brain activity is measured in a distressing and completely unnatural situation does nothing to further understanding of human attention-deficit disorder.

North Carolina Jails Free Hundreds of Illegal Immigrant Criminals Wanted by Feds – Judicial Watch

judicialwatch.org
September 10, 2019 | Judicial Watch

Weeks after Judicial Watch reported that the sheriff of North Carolina’s biggest county released numerous violent illegal immigrant criminals from custody, new federal stats reveal that the problem is statewide. Nearly 500 offenders with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers have been discharged into communities throughout the Tar Heel State this fiscal year, which doesn’t end until next month so the number is likely to grow. A Charlotte news outlet obtained the latest figures from ICE, which operates under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In the article a senior DHS source condemns North Carolina law enforcement officials, reminding them that they are obstructing federal law and endangering the American public.

So far 489 illegal aliens with ICE detainers have been discharged from North Carolina jails in the last ten months, including those charged with serious crimes such as homicide, kidnapping, arson and sex offenses. The new data does not break down which county jail the perpetrators were released from, but we know from previous disclosures that Mecklenburg County, the state’s largest, is notorious for protecting illegal aliens from the feds. In fact, when the current sheriff, Garry McFadden got elected in 2018, he immediately ended a program known as 287(g) that notifies ICE of jail inmates in the country illegally. The program enhances the safety and security of communities by creating partnerships with state and local law enforcement agencies to identify and remove aliens who are amenable to removal from the United States. It is a mutually beneficial agreement, ICE says, that identifies, arrests and serves warrants and detainers of incarcerated foreign-born criminals. The program has identified and removed from the U.S. gang members, sex offenders and murderers and has reduced the number of criminal offenders that are released back into communities. “Federal, state and local officers working together provide a tremendous benefit to public safety through increased law enforcement communication and overall community policing effectiveness,” according to ICE.

But Mecklenburg County proudly offers illegal aliens sanctuary and evidently that includes violent offenders. ICE recently disclosed that McFadden’s agency has freed more than 20 serious criminals, including rapists, child molesters, kidnappers, burglars, and those charged with gun-related and drug crimes. Most of the illegal immigrants are from Central America and Mexico, but a few are from India, Afghanistan, Liberia and Sri Lanka. Among them is Oscar Pacheco-Leonardo, a previously deported Honduran charged with rape and child sex offenses. Thankfully, ICE arrested him last month during a targeted enforcement operation because Mecklenburg County law enforcement officials released him from custody despite his violent history. The federal agency accused Mecklenburg County of releasing a serious public safety threat onto the streets of Charlotte where he was free to potentially harm others for nearly two months until his capture by ICE. “The Mecklenburg County sheriff’s decision to restrict cooperation with ICE serves as an open invitation to aliens who commit criminal offenses that Mecklenburg County is a safe haven for persons seeking to evade federal authorities, and residents of Mecklenburg County are less safe today than last year due these policies,” the agency’s regional director said in a statement.

Incredibly, a growing number of local municipalities offer illegal immigrants sanctuary and refuse to cooperate with federal authorities, even when it involves dangerous criminals. Just a few months ago Judicial Watch reported that various California law enforcement agencies released 16 illegal immigrants with criminal records during a three-month period. Some were arrested and released multiple times by the same local law enforcement agency after committing felonies. In all of the cases, ICE issued detainers but local police ignored the federal agency to protect the illegal alien from deportation, instead freeing the perpetrator back into the community. Offenders include Mexican, Honduran and Salvadoran nationals charged with murder, rape, assault with a deadly weapon, spousal abuse, driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of illegal drugs and other serious crimes. One 23-year-old Honduran man was booked and released in San Francisco ten times in less than a year for crimes ranging from burglary, vehicle theft and driving without a license. In each of the arrests, ICE issued a detainer but the San Francisco Police Department disregarded it and let the man go.

How to remove gel nail polish at home without ruining your nails

businessinsider.com
Lilah Nicolaidis
remove gel nail polish Shutterstock A gel manicure is a popular, time-saving procedure that gives you long-lasting, freshly lacquered nails for about two weeks.
But removing gel polish is not as simple as removing regular polish.
It can be damaging to your nails if you don’t take it off properly.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to remove gel nail polish safely and the things you need to do it at home.

Many people love gel manicures. Gel polish’s glossy finish is practically indestructible and that just-left-the-salon look can last for two weeks or more. But eventually, you will notice a tiny chip, and then another and another until you’ve got to remove the polish.

As anyone who’s ever had a gel manicure can confirm, that’s easier said than done. Gel polish is not like regular nail polish. Its ingredients are stronger than your traditional lacquer, which is part of why it’s so resistant to the normal wear-and-tear that destroys your average manicure in a matter of days. Gel polish is also cured under a UV or LED lamp, whereas regular polish sets under less extreme conditions.

Another reality of the gel manicure is that it can weaken your nails. Removing gel polish is not like removing regular polish, either. It takes a few steps whether you choose to go back to the salon or do it at home, and the process can be especially damaging to your nail bed if you try to peel or pick it off yourself. With that in mind (and because we’re trying to save you a few bucks), we’re going to explain how to remove a gel manicure at home.

Here’s what you need to remove a gel manicure:

Nail file: ClassyLady Professional Glass Nail File

Cuticle cream: Deborah Lippman Nail Cuticle Repair Cream

Cotton balls: Jumbo Cotton Balls

Acetone nail polish remover: OPI Nail Polish Remover

Aluminum foil: Standard Aluminum Foil

Wooden nail sticks: Adecco Nail Art Orange Wood Sticks

There are also removal kits available, like this Red Carpet Manicure version and these nail polish remover soak off foils, but these options can be pricier than having your gel polish removed at the salon.

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, carve out about 30 minutes for the whole process, since you’ll need to soak and file your nails. Find a well-ventilated place, either near an open window or a fan so you don’t breath in too much acetone. Finally, settle in with your favorite podcast and get started.

How to remove gel nail polish at home

File your nails: The point of this step is to gently penetrate the surface of the gel polish so the acetone can soak in more easily. You don’t need to do more than gently sand the surface to remove the shine. We recommend the ClassyLady Professional Glass Nail File.
Protect your skin and cuticles: Acetone is extremely drying, so take the extra time to coat the area around your nails with a thick cream or oil to protect your skin. You don’t need to go overboard, just a drop will do. We like the Deborah Lippman Nail Cuticle Repair Cream.
Soak the cotton balls: Fill a small bowl with OPI’s Nail Polish Remover and soak 10 cotton balls in it.
Wrap your nails in aluminum foil: Tear 10 3-inch squares of aluminum foil, one for each finger. Then take a soaked cotton ball and wrap your fingertips. This can be tricky, so we suggest wrapping your non-dominant hand first to make it easier. Now, sit back and relax for about 15 minutes.
Check your progress: Peek inside one of the foil wrappers. If the gel looks loosened and falling off the nail you’re ready to move on to the next step. If not, wrap the foil back up and wait another 5 to 10 minutes.
Removal: Remove the foil and apply slight pressure to the nail. The gel should slide off easily with the cotton ball, and any residue can be removed with a wooden nail stick. We recommend Adecco’s Nail Art Orange Wood Sticks.
Hydrate your nails: Don’t skip this important step! Your nails will be dry after the gel polish comes off, so wash them, and then either soak them for a few minutes in a hydrating oil or reapply the cuticle cream over your nail beds. The only reason not to do this is if you’re polishing again immediately, but experts suggest giving your nails some time to recover between manicures.
