In a new documentary, set to be released this year, a Chicago filmmaker explores the role of money and politics in creating and supporting the nation’s puppy mill industry and thwarting efforts to improve conditions for thousands of breeding dogs who spend their lives in misery.

Taking Aim at Utah’s Coal Polluters

ClimateWest

Last week, WildEarth Guardians joined the Sierra Club and the National Parks Conservation Association in calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to finally clean up the Bonanza coal-fired power plant in northeastern Utah.  This latest volley comes on the heels of ongoing efforts to hold the power plant’s owner, Deseret Power Co-op, accountable after years of violating the Clean Air Act.

The Bonanza power plant is one of the last remaining coal-fired power plants in the American West to be retrofitted with up-to-date pollution controls.  Located in the Uinta Basin of northeastern Utah, a region struggling with smog and other pollution, the plant is hammering local communities with foul emissions.  It’s also choking iconic landscapes with its haze, including nearby Dinosaur National Monument.  Not surprisingly, even the National Park Service has called out the Environmental Protection Agency for not doing more to clean up the plant.

The secret GMO war: double agents, betrayal, greed?

Nwo Report

We need to understand the distinction between two kinds of labeling

The secret GMO war: double agents, betrayal, greed?Source: Jon Rappoport | Infowars.com

I’ll start at an odd place, a seemingly innocuous place. Bear with me:

We need to understand the distinction between two kinds of labeling.

Voluntary labeling=“I own this health-food store, and I’m doing my best to sell you non-GMO products. All such products will carry a seal that says ‘Non-GMO’.”

Mandatory labeling=“Vermont has decided that all food products sold in the state which contain GMOs must be labeled as such—‘this product contains GMOs’.”

Two very different types of labels. They contain different information.

Also, one type is voluntary, and the other becomes mandatory after passage of a vote, in a legislature or through a ballot measure.

So what?

Well, let me put it to you this way. What would happen to Whole Foods’ program of voluntary GMO labeling if there were mandatory labeling…

36 Baby Elephants Kidnapped from Mothers to be SOLD TO CIRCUSES AND ZOOS in Zimbabwe!!!

This news just broke my heart today.  It seems that 36 baby elephants, aged 2.5 to 5 years, were ripped away from their mothers in the Hwange National Park for sale to private zoos and circuses abroad.  I can’t think of anything more traumatic and horrifying for those little creatures (and their mothers), except maybe witnessing the murder of their mothers by poachers, which occurs with wonton abandon in Zimbabwe.

To wit:

In the words of Rainforest Rescue:

Their chances of survival without their mothers are very slim.

Dog chained her whole life, living in horrific conditions – FREED!

IN MEMORY OF VUČKO

10952564_10205601380531181_1306296589823638500_nA few days ago Mia Ožegović made a post on Facebook about a dog her friend had discovered living in the yard of a house in the city centre of Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina. The dog was chained by a 1 metre rusted chain and living in horrific squalor. It was clear the chain never came off… and most likely the poor dog lived on the end of it 24 hours a day, day in, day out for all of her young life. She’s a purebred Belgian Shepherd (malinois) female, probably about 2 years old.

Mia wrote: “Around her “doggie house” you can see mud, stale bread ….and more mud and faeces and junk of all kind ….

As this is Bosnia, Mia and her rescuer friends knew that calling the authorities would have no effect. They tried for two nights to release the dog, but their pliers were poor and couldn’t cut any part of the…

The memorial service included a photo montage of Solo and his partner, Staff Sgt. Carlos Dipuma, as well as a moment of silence for the K-9 officer so many had grown to love.

Then many in the multi-purpose building at Farris Park sniffled as Solo’s last radio call went out.

“Attention all units, be advised that Solo does not respond. K-9 Solo is now deceased and will be laid to rest February 2, 2015,” the dispatcher said.

With that last call came a finality for so many Monday morning: the dog they trusted with their lives was gone.

“I’m gonna miss Solo. I’ve cried so many tears these last couple of days,” Dipuma said. “It’s been hard.”

On Friday, Solo was diagnosed with terminal cancer, two tumors pressing on his heart and spleen. On Monday morning…

fiona paw amputated

Fiona’s doing great, even though she’s a tripod kitty now 🙂 Before it started snowing, she was cheerfully hopping through the yard, scratching cat posts and having fun as if nothing had changed, but now that everything’s white, cold and wet outside, she’s spending most of her time indoors.

A huge thank you to all of you who contributed towards the costs of her surgery and post operative care, thus enabling this beautiful girl to enjoy life again!

Yet another snowstorm has hit us yesterday. It’s a heavy, wet snow that never stays around for a long time because it’s just not cold enough.

On Morality: Are Human Animals Superior To Nonhuman Animals?

The Legacy Of Pythagoras

snob-travella1

In my opinion, the most fundamental problem in AR debates right now is the fact that we are not continuously addressing the myth that humans are morally superior to nonhumans. This idea needs to be eradicated before any truly revolutionary thinking about Animal Rights can begin on the part of morally confused humans. This idea is so ingrained that it’s completely invisible to almost everyone, and it’s the underlying structure for all irrational, harmful moral double-standards regarding human-nonhuman interaction. There is no speciesism without Human Supremacy.

The single most overlooked, and at the same time most foundational error in logic whenever anyone tries to justify human animals exploiting nonhuman animals is the irrational idea that humans in general are morally superior to nonhumans. This idea can be easily disproved, and yet most people do not even question it. It is assumed to be indisputable when it’s not based on, as some would…

Just us; Only us

eBayism School of Thought

Dear reader, would you spare me your time? I have confessions to make, and if I do not make them, I’m afraid, I may not be able to sleep for years; and trust me, I may not be able to die. In all my human life, I have lived in dreams; dined in dreams, dreamt in dreams and wallowed in dreams, but when I was shown to the brutality of this world, I got jolted out of sleep by the reality. All my life, I have hated the religious clerics and battled the oracles. I have blamed all disasters on God. I have blamed Him for allowing devil to plague our lives and settlements with ills, corruption and war. But here I am, after passing through these ills myself, have discovered, it is not devil who abducts our children; it is not devil who is capable but deliberately shuns rescuing…

Why You Should Care About the World’s Most Threatened Group of Animals – Frogs | One Green Planet

Life or Lunch?

Green_Frog_HD_wallpaper-1280x800-1200x750Imagine walking through a forest trail with sunlight warmly beaming through the trees onto your skin. You take a moment to breathe in the serenity, listening to only the rustle of leaves through the light breeze and a faint peeping melody pleasantly ringing into your ears. You close your eyes and smile … just as something wet and slimy springs onto your leg. You look down and see a little frog (What did you think that peeping noise was?).

Now, should you A. Run and scream, B. Slap the creature off your leg and apathetically continue with your walk, or C. Gently place the little guy back on his way and say, “Hey, thanks little buddy for all you’ve done for me and my species?”

The correct answer is C. Frogs are more valuable to you and the environment than you may have ever guessed. They, along with other amphibians…
