Go Vegan or Die

Exposing the Big Game

On the tip of one my K2 Apache Outlaw skis is a sticker of a skull and crossbones with the shocking statement, “Go Vegan or Die.” That sentiment might seem mean-spirited unless taken as fair warning about the very real health risks associated with eating meat—such as the greatly increased risk of cancer.

Like the anti-smoking campaign slogan, “Quit Smoking or Die,” “Go Vegan or Die” is simply good advice for people seeking longevity. (Stone-age meat-eaters seldom lived past 30, after all.)

There’s also a less-charitable motive for the slogan on the sticker. Anybody who has been the victim of thoughtless mockery from a meat-eater for the selfless act of eschewing animal flesh would be tempted to use the slogan, “Go Vegan or Die,” as would anyone frustrated by the results of their futile attempts to help others see that animal slaughter is cruelty and humans can live quite happily on…

How To Protect Your Blog, by Hugh Roberts

Forest Garden

Hugh

~

Hugh Roberts is a true blogging friend.  Not only an extremely generous and warm-hearted soul, Hugh is exceptionally clever about the nuts and bolts side of blogging.  When I discovered my posts plagiarized by an Aussie web site a few weeks ago, Hugh immediately offered support, a healthy dose of shared outrage, and then some very practical advice.

Loyal readers and I had a number of good conversations after that episode through the comments, emails, and even some phone calls.  It heightened our awareness of how vulnerable our work remains when published online.  That is when I invited Hugh to write a guest blog for Forest Garden, giving solid technical support to help all of us with things like watermarks, widgets, disclaimers, and copyrights.  February 20, 2015 hearts 004

Hugh has come through in fine style, and I hope you will enjoy his guest blog post today:

Police Salute Retired K-9 Officer On His Final Journey To Animal Hospital

Emilio Cogliani

After a months-long battle with Cushing’s Disease, a retired K-9 officer named Judge was put to sleep last week — but not before 90 police officers could send him off properly.

In a ceremony last Friday, officers with New Jersey’s West Deptford Police Department lined the sidewalk of the St. Francis Veterinary Center, offering one last salute to their brave dog colleague:

Judge and I had such overwhelming and positive support that day,” West Deptford Police Cpl. Michael Franks, who served with Judge, told ABC News on Monday. “Though Judge was extremely lethargic and could barely walk the days before the ceremony, he was able to bite onto his favorite protective decoy arm sleeve used in training and carry it into the hospital.”

The German Shepherd started working with West Deptford in 2007, ultimately serving for seven years alongside Cpl. Franks, who adopted Judge in 2014 when the…

Pennsylvania racehorse trainer given jail time for race rigging

Tuesday's Horse

Racehorse in Profile Racehorse in Profile. Google image.

Now we’re talking. This is the way to deal with trainers who run drugged racehorses. And we hope to see more arrests and convictions in racing jurisdictions across the U.S. Horse racing itself is certainly not going to police itself properly.

A judge sentenced Central Pennsylvania racehorse trainer David Wells for race rigging by giving performance enhancing drugs to horses he ran over a period of several years.

The Associated Press reports:

The 50-year-old Wells pleaded guilty in December to rigging publicly exhibited contests. He’s admitted using drugs to give his horses an advantage in Penn National Race Course races between 2009 and 2013.

Wells said he was aware the practice violated state law and racing regulations and that he tried concealing his activity from the public and the regulators.”

Wells will serve the first three months of his six month sentence in…
