Photographing World’s Oldest Trees | Bored Pand

Beth Moon, a photographer based in San Francisco, has been searching for the world’s oldest trees for the past 14 years. She has traveled all around the globe to capture the most magnificent trees that grow in remote locations and look as old as the world itself.

“Standing as the earth’s largest and oldest living monuments, I believe these symbolic trees will take on a greater significance, especially at a time when our focus is directed at finding better ways to live with the environment”
writes Moon in her artist statement.

Sixty of Beth Moon’s duotone photos were published in a book titled “Ancient Trees: Portraits Of Time”. Here you can have a sneak preview of the book, full of strangest and most magnificent trees ever.

I Care, and It Hurts. That Dogs are Dying Outside RIGHT NOW.

Of Dogs and Chains and the Intersection of the Two

I care, and it hurts.

This week brought record setting cold temperatures to much of the country, and a knife of pain and fear and guilt to my gut with each new report of the coming or current cold.

I know dogs are out there suffering and I will fail, DDB will fail, we all will fail to help them.

One of the most heart-wrenching photos that was ever sent to me One of the most heart-wrenching photos that was ever sent to me

I care, and I’m angry.

Watching a dog suffer on a chain in warm and sunny weather is bad enough. But knowing dogs are freezing to death as I type these words claws at my insides until I want to scream and cry and take the drastic action that SHOULD BE TAKEN for every single chained, penned, or ‘outside’ dog across this great big nation this very second.

Every dog left outside in the cold to survive the…

My fellow Pet Lovers (especially those in Virginia),

Today, we dealt a BIG blow to PETA’s mass killing of pets (see article below). Virginia’s pet lovers, please…please..voice your support for the No Kill Advocacy Center’s Petition to further hinder PETA’s ability to massacre pets.

By Nathan Winograd

Today, the Virginia House of Delegates overwhelmingly passed SB 1381, requiring shelters in Virginia to be “operated for the purpose of finding permanent adoptive homes.” In other words, it does what the public already thinks shelters do and what the dictionary says they do. But some don’t. The bill is a response to PETA—which is licensed in Virginia as a shelter—killing over 90% of the animals, with no effort to find them homes and their stealing Maya, a happy and healthy dog, from her porch while her family was out and killing her that very day.

Despite PETA’s intense lobbying effort to derail…

The finding, which says a decision will be made in 2017, comes in response to a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity seeking to extend Endangered Species Act protection to the whales’ winter foraging range off the coasts of Washington, Oregon and California.

February 21st, 2015. Saving our region’s salmon is key to helping Puget Sound’s endangered resident killer whales….

OUR salmon and orcas are at a crossroads. Puget Sound’s resident killer whale population could be headed toward extinction, and saving our region’s salmon — a critical and sharply declining food source for our whales — may be the only way to save these Northwest icons.

Brian Blessed Gets Behind Campaign To Ban Wild Animal Circuses

February 20, 2015

Brian Blessed: Profile

As the political saga surrounding the promised ban on wild animals in circuses in the UK continues, legendary actor Brian Blessed has urged the government to “end this circus madness” and finally legislate to ban such acts.

The ‘Flash Gordon’ star’s call for action comes as Animal Defenders International (ADI) reveals that the only and much criticised lion and tiger circus act will not be touring Britain this year.

Brian Blessed said “I am deeply opposed to the use of wild animals in circuses and have been working with Animal Defenders International to oppose such acts for many years. Despite repeated promises from the Government, we are still waiting for the law to pass and the animals are continuing to suffer. Please end this circus madness.”

Brian Blessed is among a string of high profile supporters of ADI’s campaign to ‘Stop Circus Suffering’ in Britain…

Northen Ireland; Circus Ban On Council Land

Circuses which use wild animals in their acts could soon be banned from bringing their shows to council land in Antrim and Newtownabbey.

On Tuesday, February 10, Antrim and Newtownabbey District Council’s Policy Resources & Service Convergence Committee agreed to ban such circuses from using council-owned land.

DUP Councillor Phillip Brett proposed the motion: “That this council recognises that it is inherently cruel and unjustifiable for circuses to use wild animals to perform tricks or engage in behaviour that they otherwise would not do in the absence of coercion, and adopts a policy to prohibit circuses including wild animals from using council owned property.”

The motion was seconded by Councillor Thomas Hogg and agreed by members.

The committee’s decision still has to be ratified when the full council meets on February 26 at MossleyMill.

Councillor Brett said that it will be up to the council to…

Farm #LikeAGirl? Real Girls Don’t Abuse Female Animals

Emilio Cogliani

If you missed the Super Bowl commercial that reframes the idea of doing something “like a girl” as a compliment (as it should be), I can’t recommend it highly enough. But one pork industry spokesperson was also moved by the commercial — moved to attempt to co-opt the hashtag by blogging about it on Pork Network in reference to what it means to “Farm #LikeAGirl.”

There’s a major problem with this PR ploy though: In the pork industry and in much of animal agriculture, it’s actually the female animals who are the most abused.

2015-02-17-ericaerica.JPG Case in point: Pork Network supports the standard pork industry practice of locking a female pig inside a tiny cage, forcing a human arm deep inside of her to artificially inseminate her and then leaving her to languish immobilized for the entirety of her four-month pregnancy. When she finally gives birth, she’s moved to another crate…

No Kill in a Nutshell: All You Need To Know & Do To Make YOUR Community No Kill

ALL are EQUAL. All are Souls. All are ONE. ALL are EQUAL. All are Souls. All are ONE.

Shelter: To protect from harm, to provide refuge, a safe haven

The first time many animals experience neglect and abuse it at the very shelter that is supposed to protect them from it. Our shelters are in crisis. Why? Killing is an act of violence. And not only do people in shelters work at a very place that commits this violence, they have, in fact, been hired to do exactly that. Can we really be surprised when they dont clean thoroughly, dont feed the animals, handle them too roughly, neglect and abuse them, or simply ignore their cries for help? How does shoddy cleaning or rough handling or skipping meals compare with putting an animal to death? Because shelter workers understand that they have the power to kill each and every one of these animals, and will in fact kill most…
