Ask big corporations to stop plastic pollution! | Greenpeace

Take Action Now!

Single-use plastic costs little to companies, but the real price is paid by our planet and communities. For far too long, big companies have made big money forcing plastic packaging into our lives, most of the time without giving us the choice to avoid it.

Corporations like Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, Unilever, Coca-Cola, Mars, Kraft Heinz, Mondelez, Colgate-Palmolive, Johnson and Johnson, and Danone are increasing the amount of single-use plastic and, even if they claim to know little about where their plastic ends up, their solutions have only been related to recycling.

The truth is that recycling is not the solution: over 90% of the plastic ever made has not been recycled, it sits in landfills, ends up in the environment, or has been incinerated and dispersed toxic pollution back to our environment. We cannot simply recycle our way out of the plastic pollution crisis.

Our planet can’t take anymore. We need urgently to stop plastic pollution at its source. It’s time for corporations to move away from single-use plastic altogether.

We ask the CEOs of Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, Unilever, Coca-Cola, Mars, Kraft Heinz, Mondelez, Colgate-Palmolive, Johnson and Johnson, Danone:

to be transparent about the plastic they use and produce
to commit to reduction and set annual targets for reducing their plastic footprint
to eliminate unnecessary single-use plastic by the end of 2019
to invest in reuse and new delivery systems

The plastic pollution crisis is massive, and beach cleanups and recycling are simply not enough. We need real solutions now!

Add your name to demand that companies take responsibility for the plastic pollution crisis they helped create!

Please phase out single-use plastic packaging and invest in alternative delivery systems

To the CEOs of Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, Unilever, Coca-Cola, Mars, Kraft Heinz, Mondelez, Colgate-Palmolive, Johnson and Johnson, and Danone.

USA: Help Pass Prop 12 And Give Animals In Confinement Some Decent Legislation.

World Animals Voice

USA

https://mercyforanimals.org/make-history-with-us-help-pass-prop-12-from

Americans are less than three weeks from Election Day—and everyone in the U.S., not just Californians, can help pass Prop 12.

This historic measure would guarantee that all egg-laying hens, pigs used for breeding, and calves used for veal in California be free from severe confinement in small, cruel cages. The law would also mandate that all eggs, pork, and veal sold in California come from farms that meet this standard.

Measures like Prop 12 are crucial, since not a single federal law protects animals during their lives at factory farms. Most egg-laying hens and mother pigs in the U.S. are kept in enclosures so small the animals are unable to even turn around.

See for yourself

Prop 12 enjoys the support of dozens of leading animal protection organizations and humane societies, nearly 500 California veterinarians, the Center for Food Safety, Sierra Club of California, and more.

Lawsuit seeks online access to federal elephant, lion trophy import records

Wildlife agency secretly issuing import permits despite President’s opposition

Washington, D.C. — Born Free USA, The Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society International, and Center for Biological Diversity sued the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) today for violating the law by failing to post online elephant and lion trophy permitting records as required by the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

Under 1996 amendments to the Freedom of Information Act, agencies are obligated to post their decisions – including orders, policies, and interpretations – online for public inspection. The same obligation applies to certain types of records that are frequently requested and that have been released in the past. FWS’ FOIA log demonstrates that conservationists, journalists, and others request elephant and lion trophy import records often enough that this information should be posted online automatically as soon as the agency receives it.

BMW cars fire hazard scandal gets bigger

Dear Kitty. Some blog

BLUE BMW M5 CATCHES FIRE!! while driving…..

Helmet cam video captures moment a man’s BMW M5 catches fire. The driver wasn’t hurt. But his car randomly burst into flames as he was driving it.

Translated from Dutch NOS TV today:

A million BMW cars more recalled due to fire hazards

BMW recalls a million cars worldwide on top of the nearly 500,000 recalled in August. The cars run the risk of catching fire.

In the Netherlands, by extending the recall, not 6764, but some 27,685 cars have to go back to the garage.

It’s all about diesel cars. BMW warns that “in extremely rare cases” the mixing of leaked coolant can be soiled with soot deposition.

It is not known how many cars were burned out by the defect. According to Bloomberg news agency, in South Korea, where the…

Ask TUI UK to Stop Supporting Orca Abuse

Ask TUI UK to Stop Supporting Orca Abuse
2-3 minutes

TUI UK, formerly known as Thomson Holidays, continues to sell tickets to SeaWorld, despite being fully aware of the company’s cruel treatment of animals for profit.

The documentary Blackfish exposed SeaWorld’s abuse of animals to the public, its stock has tanked, and major US companies such as Southwest Airlines have severed ties with the park, as will the UK’s biggest travel provider, the Thomas Cook Group, following a dedicated PETA campaign. But TUI UK continues to offer its customers SeaWorld ticket deals.

At SeaWorld, orcas live in cramped, concrete tanks and are deprived of everything that is natural and important to them. With no physical, mental, or emotional stimulation, they spend their days swimming in endless circles.

At least 40 orcas and dozens of other dolphins have died at SeaWorld parks from causes including severe trauma, intestinal gangrene, and chronic cardiovascular failure.
What You Can Do

As SeaWorld faces a plunging stock price and a steady decline in visitor numbers, it’s time for TUI UK to follow in the footsteps of numerous other travel providers – including STA Travel and Thomas Cook – and sever ties with this marine abusement park.

When Thomas Cook pledged to stop SeaWorld ticket sales, its CEO, Peter Fankhauser, said, “[W]hen so many of our customers are so clear in their view, I could not allow our business to ignore them .” It’s never acceptable to rob others of their freedom for a quick buck.

Please let TUI UK know your views and urge the company to stop supporting orca abuse.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is barreling ahead to auction New Mexico public lands for fracking and steamrolling, sidelining, and shunning the American public in the process.

The agency yesterday announced its intent to sell more than 84,000 acres of the Land of Enchantment to the oil and gas industry this December. This includes more than 43,000 acres in the Greater Chaco region of northwest New Mexico and 41,000 acres in southeast New Mexico’s Greater Carlsbad Caverns region (the sale also includes more than 5,000 acres in Oklahoma and Texas).

See for yourself where these lands are located, click here to access an interactive map >>

Simultaneously, the Bureau of Land Management rejected a request from WildEarth Guardians and many others for public hearings around the proposed sale. A broad coalition of environmental, Tribal, health, and clean energy…

90 Elephants Killed—Urge Botswana to Act NOW!

haluise

https://support.peta.org/page/6803/action/1

A few years ago, Botswana rightfully banned the coward’s pastime of trophy hunting and the country’s anti-poaching unit was the best in the region—if not the world. Members of the armed unit patrolled elephants’ habitats, while the country’s military was mobilized throughout the region, tasked with preventing poaching. In April, a new government took power, and it disarmed the anti-poaching unit shortly after taking office.

Nearly 90 elephants in Botswana have been massacred since then.

elephants

Outrage is worldwide. People everywhere are appealing to Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi to reinstate anti-poaching efforts, which were once applauded internationally, immediately. Botswana is home to the largest population of elephants in Africa—an estimated 130,000—and has long been seen as a safe haven for animals.

In May, the anti-poaching unit was disarmed as part of a broader action in which military weapons and equipment were withdrawn from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks…

International Snow Leopard Day 2018

The Jaguar

Snow Leopard on Snowy Rocks by Eric Kilby. CC BY-SA 2.0

Well friends, today is October 23. That makes it International Snow Leopard Day: a day set aside to celebrate and generate support for snow leopards (Panthera uncia).

Snow leopards are extraordinary creatures that are somehow able to survive in the harsh mountains of Central Asia, and yet do so with unparalleled grace and beauty. Here is a ‘quick facts’ guide I wrote about snow leopards last year, which should serve as a good introduction to this remarkable species.

An excellent side-effect of International #SnowLeopardDay is that the Twitterverse is alive with pictures and videos of snow leopards. Since what people say on Twitter apparently counts as real news now (God, help us), here are a few of my favorite tweets thus far:

An apocalyptic day for majestic Elephants

Adonis Diaries

Elephant apocalypse

By Alice Jay

Four elephants are killed an hour — it’s a race against time before we lose these gentle giants forever.

In one day, poachers butchered 600 of them in Cameroon.

Take Action Now!

Dear friends,

Dozens of heavily-armed hunters rode into a national park in Cameroon, butchered over 600 majestic elephants, then hacked off their faces for their tusks. Poachers have annihilated half of central Africa’s last elephants. And no one’s been able to stop them.

Until now!

Brave investigators have gone undercover in poaching rings in ten African countries, and already more than 2,000 traffickers have been jailed!

It’s awe-inspiring stuff, and it’s won awards, but many funders are wary of going head-to-head with organised crime. We may be the best community to scale this extraordinary operation, fast.

The results of a new animal cognition study have demonstrated that Asian elephants have math skills similar to humans.

Experimental evidence shows that Asian elephants possess numerical skills similar to those in humans

Overview

Asian elephants demonstrate numeric ability which is closer to that observed in humans rather than in other animals. This is according to lead author Naoko Irie of SOKENDAI (The Graduate University for Advanced Studies and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) in Japan. In a study published in the Springer-branded Journal of Ethology, Irie and her colleagues found that an Asian elephants’ sense of numbers is not affected by distance, magnitude or ratios of presented numerosities, and therefore provides initial experimental evidence that non-human animals have cognitive characteristics similar to human counting.

The study

In this study, the researchers aimed to replicate the results of previous research that already showed that Asian elephants have exceptional numeric competence.

Irie and her colleagues developed a new method to test how well the animals can judge relative quantity. They successfully trained a 14-year old Asian elephant called Authai from the Ueno Zoo in Japan to use a computer-controlled touch panel. The programme was specifically designed to examine the cognition of elephants, so that any unintended factors potentially influencing the results could be ruled out.

Authai was presented with a relative numerosity judgment task on the screen, and then had to indicate with the tip of her trunk which one of the two figures shown to her at a time contained more items. These ranged from 0 to 10 items, and contained pictures of bananas, watermelons and apples. The fruit were not all presented in the same size, to ensure that Authai did not make her choices purely on the total area that was covered with illustrations per card.

The results

Authai was rewarded whenever she chose the figures featuring the larger number of items. This she did correctly 181 out of 271 times — a success rate of 66.8 per cent. Her ability to accurately pinpoint the figure with the most fruits on it was not affected by the magnitude, distance or ratio of the comparisons. Authai’s reaction time was, however, influenced by the distance and ratio between the two figures presented. She needed significantly more time to make her selection between figures where relatively smaller distances and larger ratios were presented.

“This study provides the first experimental evidence that nonhuman animals have cognitive characteristics partially identical to human counting.”

‘Gods In Shackles’ – A Conference To Tackle The Exploitation Of Captive Wild Animals.

World Animals Voice

The PAWS 2018 International Captive Wildlife Conference is taking place November 9-11 in Burbank, California. A very important theme of the conference is “Confronting Captivity”, which reflects a growing resistance to the exploitation of captive wild animals around the world. The problems of captivity abound with tourist elephant rides, orca whales in marine parks, and big cats in circuses.

One of the most notable speakers at this year’s conference is Sangita Iyer, founder of the non-profit organization Voice for Asian Elephants Society. Sangita is a native of India, and an award-winning journalist and wildlife documentary filmmaker. She is the director and producer of the globally acclaimed documentary Gods In Shackles, which was nominated at the United Nations and has garnered over a dozen international awards. Sangita has gained recognition throughout India for her courage in exposing the plight of captive elephants, who are continuously exploited for profit behind…

More information:

Trump just gave a sickening gift to his son, changing the law to let bloodthirsty American hunters murder elephants in Africa and bring their heads home as trophies.

Trump Jr. shot and mutilated an elephant — and now his dad is rewarding him by making it so anyone can join the slaughter and bring home elephant body parts as souvenirs, even as ivory poaching threatens to wipe these amazing creatures out.

Let’s build a massive global outcry to shame the US into dropping this disgusting plan, and when it’s huge, Avaaz will work with key African countries to deliver it at a major wildlife protection meeting days away.
