Area of Global Dead Zones Doubling Every 10 Years

The number and size of oceanic dead zones is increasing.

The name says it all, but dead zones are areas along the sea floor where oxygen levels are so low they no longer sustain marine life. Hypoxia, which is a deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues of organisms, is a widespread and growing problem in Earth’s oceans as industrial waste, fertilizer runoff from industrial agriculture and anthropogenic climate disruption…

Court: Feds Failed to Fully Assess Risks of Killing Thousands of Animals a Year in Idaho

Straight from the Horse's Heart

“USDA’s Wildlife Services should have more carefully considered its proposed predator-killing activities’ impacts on the environment…”

BOISE, Idaho— In a powerful rebuke, a federal judge ruled U.S. agency that kills thousands of animals a year in Idaho failed to adequately analyze the environmental risks of shooting, trapping and poisoning native wildlife like mountain lions, coyotes and foxes.

The court’s ruling, issued late Friday, holds that USDA’s Wildlife Services should have more carefully considered its proposed predator-killing activities’ impacts on the environment. The judge held the agency ignored science showing that killing predators does not decrease conflicts with livestock. The court ruled controversial killing warrants a much more thorough analysis.

“Wildlife Services will now have to fairly evaluate how killing thousands of coyotes in southern Idaho each year affects the environment,” said Talasi Brooks, a staff attorney for Advocates for the West, who represented the…

Yo’oko, a Jaguar that once Roamed the United States, has been Killed

The Jaguar

A newly-released photo of a jaguar pelt is widely believed to be that of Yo’oko, a jaguar who had previously been seen in the United States. This skull did not belong to Yo’oko. Image courtesy of Richard Mahler.

This is not the sort of story I like to share. Since 1996, seven male jaguars (Panthera onca) have been confirmed in the United States. This provided some hope that the species, which once ranged widely throughout the southwestern US, might eventually recolonize parts of their former range. Unfortunately, one of those jaguars has been killed.

The Northern Jaguar Project (NJP) recently sent a photo of a jaguar pelt to the Arizona Daily Star. The NJP’s biologists, six members of the Arizona Game and Fish Department, and a retired US Fish and Wildlife biologist have all looked at the picture. They have concluded that the spot pattern matches…

Bill Gates Donates $4 Million Dollars to New GM Mosquito Project

Openhearted Rebellion

By Brandon TurbevilleNatural Blaze

Bill Gates is at it yet again. After promoting dangerous vaccines at home and abroad as well as GMOs in the third world, Gates is continuing on with his mission of promoting genetic modification by donating money to into a project allegedly designed to eradicate malaria.

The project consists of using genetically modified mosquitoes designed to pass on a self-destructive gene to their offspring, thus bringing about the demise and reduction of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
Gates is pouring in $4 million of his own money into the project overseen by UK company Oxitec. The plan is to eradicate the Anepholes species of mosquito or, at the very least, to vastly lower its numbers in the wild.

Advocates go after rancher’s forest permit after wolf’s death

Straight from the Horse's Heart

as published in The Santa Fe New Mexican

“This was a horrific loss of a Mexican gray wolf and the perpetrator deserves far more than a slap on the hand,”

Mexican gray wolf mp1385 was born in the wild in 2014 and weighed 25 pounds on Sept. 7 of that year. At that time, he was radio collared, vaccinated and released in good health, according to a wolf capture data sheet. The wolf was found dead in February 2015 in Gila National Forest. A Mexican gray wolf identified as mp1385 had a lot working against him.

As a threatened species, the nearly year-old male pup faced the same issues that have long challenged Mexican gray wolves in a decades-old reintroduction program in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona: an uncertainty over food, problems associated with inbreeding, the occasional car accident, poaching.
