Caito Foods is voluntarily recalling fresh cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and fresh-cut mixed fruit containing one of these melons, produced at the Caito Foods facility in Indianapolis, because these products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Use or consumption of products contaminated with Salmonella may result in serious illness. It can also produce serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Reports of illnesses linked to these products are under investigation, and Caito Foods is voluntarily recalling the products out of an abundance of caution. The company has been advised by the CDC that it has linked 58 illnesses to the strain of Salmonella under investigation. Caito Foods has ceased producing and distributing these products as the company and FDA continue their investigation.

The products were packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers and distributed in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.

Because it is possible that products shipped between April 17 and June 7, 2018 could still be on store shelves, this recall extends to both retailers and consumers.

The potential that these products are contaminated with Salmonella was discovered through analyzing reports made by state departments of public health. Caito Foods has ceased producing and distributing these products as the company and FDA continue their investigation.

Consumers seeking information may call 844-467-7278 Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT and Saturday and Sunday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT.

Retailers and wholesale customers should check their inventories and shelves to confirm that none of the products are present or available for purchase by consumers or in warehouse inventories. Please contact 844-467-7278 Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT and Saturday and Sunday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT to arrange for disposal or return of the product.

This recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Alert! Sand Wash Basin Wild Horses Need Water Now – Please Call the Colorado BLM

Action Alert: Wild Horses and other Wildlife are Running Out of Water in Sand Wash Basin – Now is the Time to Call the BLM and Say Let Wild Horse Warriors Haul Water To Sand Wash Basin

By Carol J. Walker

Two weeks ago I was visiting the wild horses in Sand Wash Basin and became very concerned because the Basin was the dryest I have even seen since I started visiting in 2011.  Many of the southern waterholes that are the most visited were almost dry or already dry, and in the northern part of the area, Sheepherder Spring’s pump was broken and not working and while was in the area, one of the sheep ranchers who has a grazing lease turned off the water at Lake…

Breaking! Pink Tells SeaWorld’s Board Of Directors To Stop Being Bullies & To Release Captive Orcas From Their Concrete Prison – World Animal News

By Lauren Lewis –
June 14, 2018

Rock icon and rock-star mother of two, Pink, spoke out yesterday against SeaWorld during its online annual meeting. The Grammy winner called on the company to build coastal sanctuaries for the long-suffering orcas it holds captive.
“As a mother, I would never take my kids anywhere that keeps intelligent, sensitive beings in intensive confinement. Children are impressionable, and the last thing I would want to teach my kids is that ‘might makes right’ or that it’s OK to bully and exploit someone just because they look different from us,” the brilliant communicator who has been a PETA supporter for more than 15 years told SeaWorld board members. “But that’s exactly what SeaWorld does by locking up animals who, in their ocean homes, would swim up to 140 miles a day, dive to great depths, cooperate with their pods to find food, communicate in their own dialects, and transmit their own culture from generation to generation.”
Pink reiterated that at SeaWorld, all these poor captive animals are able to do is swim in endless circles with some becoming so frustrated that they break their teeth by gnawing on the concrete corners and metal bars of their tiny tanks.
“But you have a chance to change all that,” Pink noted as per PETA. “When will SeaWorld transfer its orcas and other marine mammals to seaside sanctuaries to save them, and itself?”
PETA has owned stock in SeaWorld since the company went public in 2013 in order to inform stakeholders of animal-welfare issues and propose policy changes. To date, at least 40 orcas have died at the abusement park and dozens more have been sentenced to miserable lives inside concrete tanks.
“You don’t have to be a multiplatinum Grammy winner or have access to SeaWorld’s annual meetings to make a difference for the animals trapped at the parks,” PETA states on its website requesting that people join its fight to urge the company to send the captive orcas to seaside sanctuaries https://worldanimalnews.com/breaking-pink-tells-seaworlds-board-of-directors-to-stop-being-bullies-to-release-captive-orcas-from-their-concrete-prison/!

Petition · Big Island Civil Defense and Fire Department: Please authorize helicopter and boat animal rescues in areas where animals are trapped · Change.org

Axel Kratel started this petition to Big Island Civil Defense and Fire Department and 2 others

The 2018 eruption of Kilauea is unprecedented in strength and volume and has trapped many animals in areas completely surrounded by lava. Dogs, cats, and many farm animals including cows, chicken, goats, sheep and other animals are trapped. Hundreds of volunteers not affiliated with any govt agency or the humane society are taking matters in their own hands and are evacuating animals at their own risk and expense. The rescuers are putting their own lives at risk because civil defense and the fire dept. have refused all access to those areas and do not provide any support.

Many clandestine operations are underway and are putting both volunteers and first responders at risk due to the lack of support. Some of the animals being rescued have burned paws and burned noses, we don’t know how many more have already died. There are large channelized lava flows going to the ocean where goats climb up the side banks of the black cooled part of the flows and then their hooves break through the crust and they are burned alive. A lot of animals are now trapped on green mountain, which is completely surrounded by lava. But the broader isolated area encompasses many, many more acres that includes many pets and farm animals

The press is silent and isn’t reporting on the issue because they are afraid they will loose access to the eruption areas. Meanwhile, the animals are dying in secret. It’s been four weeks now that the tragedy has begun and we don’t even know how many countless animals are left behind. Photos of lava are showing up with silhouettes of cats in the background.

We submitted a helicopter rescue plan well over a week ago that includes resources that we are willing to provide, including helicopter and an advanced crew that knows how to do technical animal evacuations. All we are hearing from civil defense are coquis and crickets. The silence is deafening. Others have submitted helicopter proposals long before we did, and these have also been refused.

We the people demand that animal welfare be attended to properly in this disaster and that volunteers be given access, and also be given the dignity of being communicated with by our govt officials with aloha and respect.

Petition: Cutting Conflict Palm Oil · Change.org

Cutting Conflict Palm Oil · Change.org

Every hour, 300 football field sized masses of rainforest are cut and burned to make way for palm oil plantations, destroying the habitats of orangutans, Sumatran tigers, Pygmy elephants, Sumatran rhinos, sun bears and clouded leopards in Southeast Asia. Palm oil is found in lipstick, instant ramen, baked goods, soaps and many other products because of its low market price. With so many products, we can not cut palm oil completely. But, we can work to use SAFE, SUSTAINABLE palm oil in everyday products, so that orangutans are not killed every 2 hours by deforestation. At the current rate, studies say that 98% of Indonesian rainforests will be gone by 2022. Because of this, we must take action to prevent further loss of the unique species indigenous to Indonesia.

Because the majority of palm oil plantations are illegal, or they are NOT certified to be safe, we kindly ask ShopRite to become a Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certified member. As a staple grocery store in many communities, including ours, ShopRite has the ability to make a significant impact on what customers buy. Through continued effort and pressure from activists, renowned brands like Walmart, Costco, Kellogg’s, and Hershey have all changed their palm oil policies for the better. So, we believe it is very much possible and necessary for ShopRite to make an effort to save our environment. We hope ShopRite will not only enforce SAFE palm oil commitments by buying from SUSTAINABLE sources, but ensure that they are consistently followed.

We welcome anybody and everybody to sign our petition to CUT CONFLICT PALM OIL out of local stores.

Scientists are expressing alarm over “utterly terrifying” new findings from NASA and the European Space Agency that Antarctica has lost about 3 trillion tons of ice since 1992, and in the past five years—as the atmospheric and ocean temperatures have continued to climb amid ongoing reliance on fossil fuels—ice losses have tripled.

“These events and the sea-level rise they’ve triggered are an indicator of climate change and should be of concern for the governments we trust to protect our coastal cities and communities.”
— Andrew Shepherd, University of Leeds

This should be a wake-up call, said University of Leeds professor Andrew Shepherd, a lead author of the report. “These events and the sea-level rise they’ve triggered are an indicator of climate change and should be of concern for the governments we trust to protect our coastal cities and communities.”

Published in the journal Nature, “This is the most robust study of the ice mass balance of Antarctica to date,” said NASA’s Erik Ivins, who co-led the research team. The report offers insight into the future of the Antarctic Ice Sheet, which the authors note “is an important indicator of climate change and driver of sea-level rise.”

“The outlook for the future is looking different to what it was,” explained Shepherd. “There has been a sharp increase, with almost half the loss coming in the last five years alone.”

Up until 2012, “we could not detect any acceleration,” but after that, based on surveys by satellites, they saw a threefold increase in the rate of ice melt. “That’s a big jump, and it did catch us all by surprise,” Shepherd said. “A threefold increase now puts Antarctica in the frame as one of the largest contributors to sea-level rise. The last time we looked at the polar ice sheets, Greenland was the dominant contributor. That’s no longer the case.”

Aboout decade ago, as New Scientist noted, “the official view was that there would be no net ice loss from Antarctica over the next century.”

Even so, Dr. James Hansen, “the father of modern climate change awareness,” warned at the time, “The primary issue is whether global warming will reach a level such that ice sheets begin to disintegrate in a rapid, non-linear fashion on West Antarctica, Greenland or both.”

“Once well under way, such a collapse might be impossible to stop, because there are multiple positive feedbacks,” Hansen wrote for New Scientist in 2007. “In that event, a sea level rise of several meter at least would be expected.”

Fears of so-called feedback loops have long been a critical part of the scientific community’s warnings about what runaway climate change could mean.

According to the report out this week—which was conducted by 84 researchers across 44 institutions—and others that have preceded it, the most serious melting is occuring in West Antarctica. “When we look into the ocean we find that it’s too warm and the ice sheet can’t withstand the temperatures that are surrounding it in the sea,” which is causing glaciers to melt more rapidly into the oceans, Shepherd explained.

East Antarctica, meanwhile, has experienced far less melting because the bulk of its ice is above sea level, he added. That is “an important distinction, because it means it’s insulated from changes in the ocean’s temperature.”

“I think we should be worried. That doesn’t mean we should be desperate,” University of California Irvine’s Isabella Velicogna, one of 88 co-authors,” told the Associated Press. “Things are happening. They are happening faster than we expected.”
