A Florida sheriff’s office is naming a new K-9 after a sergeant who was killed while on duty last year.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office named the K-9 Roy, which is Sergeant Brian Lavigne’s middle name. His Daughter, Caitlin LaVigne, is a deputy at the sheriff’s office and said that the dog will keep her dad’s spirit alive.

“My dad was tough as nails, just like the dogs are, so it’s nice to know that he’s still kind of out here with us,” LaVigne said.

A press release from the sheriff’s office noted that Sergeant LaVigne was only one shift away from retirement on Jan. 11, 2021, when a suspect intentionally crashed his car into the marked patrol vehicle that Sergeant LaVigne was in.

He died because of the injuries sustained in the crash.

Sheriff Chad Chronister said that it’s an honor that the LeVigne family allowed the office to use his name for the K9.

“This tribute to Sgt. Brian LeVigne is one that will be ever present to anyone that comes into contact with K-9 Roy. While we continue to heal as an agency after losing Sergeant LeVigne, I know that K-9 Roy will be a constant reminder of the life that was cruelly taken from us,” Chronister said.

The K-9’s handler is Deputy Sarah Ernstes, who is a close family friend of the LaVignes.

“For me, it was just a hope that it would give them some kind of peace and joy despite everything that they’ve been through that in this past year. I just hope that Roy and I can honor them and honor him in some way that they’ll be proud of us,” Ernstes said.

Tell the EPA: End chemical and pesticide testing on animals NOW

The HSUS Tell the EPA: End chemical and pesticide testing on animals NOW

In September of 2019 the Environmental Protection Agency made a groundbreaking announcement that they will end all animal testing on dogs, mice, rabbits, and other mammals for new chemicals and pesticides by 2035. While we were thrilled with the announcement and worked closely with the EPA to get to this moment, we are urging them to speed up their timeline.

Although the EPA is moving towards eliminating the need for animal testing, the slow timeline means hundreds of thousands of dogs, mice, rabbits, and other mammals will continue to have chemicals rubbed into their skin, dropped in their eyes, or forced down their throats. The chemical industry does most of this testing and we need to expedite the deadline for both the agency and industry. There are already many non-animal methods available that are more scientifically accurate and do not cause animal suffering. We are urging the EPA to transition to these technologies sooner to avoid even more animal suffering.

The EPA needs to hear from you as animal lovers and consumers. Tell them you do not want new chemicals and pesticides tested on mammals like dogs and rabbits, and that you want them to speed up their timeline to end all new mammalian testing.

TAKE ACTION
Please use the form provided to send a letter to EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan urging him to speed up the timeline for the EPA to end chemical and pesticide testing on animals to avoid further animal suffering.

Dementia in Women from Air Pollution Toxins

Chemical Free Life

A growing body of evidence over the last few years has demonstrated that air pollution is a significant risk factor for developing dementia in old age. “These ‘toxic’ responses can make the blood-brain barrier leaky and cause damage to the brain,” says Dr. Jiu-Chiuan Chen, neuroscientist, University of Southern California. Now results from a new scientific study suggest what many scientists have been discovering in recent years: Improved air quality over several years is associated with a reduced risk of dementia in elderly women.

The findings bolster suspicions that external pollutants can contribute to accelerated aging in the brain (which is effectively what dementia is)*. But more critically, they also show that this aging can be slowed down if exposure to those pollutants decreases.

Study overview

Researchers assessed the annual physical and cognitive health of 2,239 US women aged 74 to 92, from 2008 to 2018. They focused on…
