For centuries, it has been commonplace for religious and secular leaders to call for “a day of prayer and fasting.” Whether it’s in response to a calamity facing everyone in their care or in preparation for a new endeavor, these calls are meant to remind people that, though the needs are great, God is greater. 

Such a call was issued by one American, and it is especially interesting because it sounds like it’s made to a people who aren’t needy.

We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!

Many would acknowledge this can sadly be said of many Americans today. Except this call was not made to today’s Americans, it was issued over 160 years ago. Right in the middle of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln could see the surface-level effects of disunity and racism and bloodshed. Yet he saw beyond that to the root cause of all those evils: a people who had forgotten God. We can see this same forgetfulness causing numerous problems in our country today. Yet we will not choose the path of pride, but the one of humility, and “pray to the God that made us” for His forgiveness and transforming work.
