Don’t Evict Woman for Feeding Stray Cats

A woman is being evicted with no prior warning because she’s been feeding homeless cats in the area. The mobile home company would rather trap the cats and put them in kill shelters. Sign our petition to demand that this woman be allowed to stay in her home of 21 years.

Penguin Travels 5,000 Miles to Hang Out With Rescuer | Care2 Causes

Life or Lunch?

Talk about gratitude.

How far would you swim to reunite with the person who saved your life? For one penguin who found himself in a sticky situation (literally), the answer is approximately 5,000 miles.

Have you heard about the Magellanic Penguin and retired bricklayer in Brazil who have struck up a unique friendship?

Joao Pereira de Souza lives in a fishing village just outside Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2011 he found a tiny penguin lying on some rocks at his local beach. The creature was covered in oil and close to death.

Joao cleaned the penguin, nursed him back to health, and named him Dindim. Joao tried releasing the penguin, presumably never to meet again, but Dindim wasn’t ready to leave just yet. Joao recalls, “He stayed with me for 11 months and then, just after he changed his coat with new feathers, he disappeared.”

But that was not the last…

This Coffee Shop Opens Its Doors Every Night To Stray Dogs | The Dodo

Life or Lunch?

While it may not be possible to open your home to every stray pet in need, an open heart can be just as accommodating.

A photo has been making the rounds on social media showing a group of stray dogs napping comfortably on a bench of cushions as a result of one business’s act of kindness. The image was reportedly snapped at a café in Greece, where management sees fit to offer refuge to homeless pups after closing up each evening.

The cafeteria Hot Spot in Mytilene, Lesbos, once customers leave, opens its doors to local stray dogs so they can use the sofas and “sleep without being cold,” writes Greek blog Zoosos.

Such random acts of generosity toward animals isn’t uncommon in Greece, which has a large number of stray dogs. Despite being without a permanent home or family, these animals are often collared and cared for…

Something to bear in mind as Mother’s Day approaches…

Are there chicken sheds in heaven?

Next time you eat a piece of meat, take a moment to think about the fact that it had a mother.

If it’s pork you’re eating – think about that piglet being removed from it’s mother within just a few days of being born and slaughtered within 3 – 6 months.

If it’s lamb you’re eating – know that it was removed from its mother within a few months of being born and killed within 3 – 10 months.

If it’s chicken you’re eating – know that it was never even allowed to meet it’s mother and was killed within 6 weeks of being born.

If it’s beef you’re eating – know that they have been slaughtered within just 1 to 2 years.

Life or Lunch?

FINAL2orca_2D00_silence_2D00_friends1

Growing up, I was always taught in school not to discriminate against people based on their gender, ethnicity, class, or sexual orientation. We’re pretty much all raised with those values, right? Well, as I got older and entered adulthood, I started to realize that the same should apply to animals—who suffer greatly.

Today, countless animals face a fate similar to that of humans who were forced into slavery and subjected to other injustices: They’re tortured, abused, and neglected—just as humans once were, and, unfortunately, sometimes still are. Can you believe that over 63 billion animals in the U.S. are slaughtered every year for the food industry? They’re often confined to small stalls or cages and deprived of everything that’s natural and important to them until the day they’re sent to slaughter. How is this fair? In addition to being used for food, animals also suffer at the hands of humans for fashion, experimentation, and entertainment.

I Lived Through A Miracle (6 Images)

Connecting Beyond

Friends, as I write this, I am fighting severe exhaustion. Yet, I am alive and well along with my family. What all of us here in Lancaster, NY have witnessed, is a Miracle. The tons of snow that was dumped on us in 2 days, was predicted to cause massive flooding. It did not. Because we experienced a slow thaw, right before our very eyes, the snow just seemed to disappear.

Even the local waters are already receding. I went out this afternoon to get some shots of local creeks, and to be truthful, was disappointed. The “drama” I had expected was not there. That is good news for the residences that live by these creeks, for no flooding happened as was foretold.

We all here are so relieved Winter Storm Knife is over, and we are trying to get back to a normal routine. This may take a few…

U.S.: Recognition for wildlife-friendly farmers

In last year’s Animal Welfare Institute’s quarterly newsletter for the spring of 2013, the article entitled “New certifications recognize farmers and ranchers who make peace with predators and other wildlife” makes some fascinating points.

A study carried out by Oregon State University found that predator species like wolves, coyotes, bears, and others were beneficial to native plant communities. They keep herbivore populations in check, which allows plants to thrive and the health of streams and watersheds to improve.

The standard approach to conservation of predators has been to set aside conservation areas, while sort of expecting that the predators will remain within these areas. Of course, the predators don’t know where the boundaries are, and this does nothing to stop ranchers and farmers from killing predators who wander onto their land, threatening their livestock.

Killing predators is counter-productive. There is good evidence that killing coyotes actually increases their population since…

WATCH: Local firefighter saves tiniest patient

Q13 FOX News

Courtesy Andy Reilly Courtesy Andy Reilly

SEATTLE — Firefighters perform lifesaving acts as part of their job.  But one local firefighter went above and beyond the call of duty for one tiny little creature.

Andy Reilly says he was headed out from the firehouse on a call early Tuesday morning.

“I saw something on the floor that I first thought was a giant moth,” he wrote on Facebook.  “On closer inspection it turned out to be a humming bird.”

Reilly says the little bird moved when he touched it but it seemed otherwise completely stunned.

“The doors of the bay had been closed for hours,” he wrote.  “It must have gotten exhausted flying around inside.”

So when he arrived back from the call he says he made a little nest out of a clean rag and he attempted to feed it some sugar water without much luck.

“I took it home this morning…

Two Pigs Saved Thanks to One Farmer’s Incredible Change of Heart VIDEO | One Green Planet

Life or Lunch?

In the world of animal agriculture, pigs, cows, and chickens are all turned into “things,” regarded as commodities for the sake of our profit. In order to justify treating animals in this manner, the people who “own” them have to mentally distance themselves from their actions and from the personalities and needs of the animals as well. But that’s not to say that some farmers don’t “wake up” and recognize that the animals they work with are someones, not somethings.

Take this former pig farmer, for example. After working with pigs for most of his career, a “lightbulb” went off and he came to realize that what he was doing to his pigs didn’t seem right. He then gave up pig farming and went vegetarian. In this video, the farmer transports two of his pigs, Roxy and Gus, to live in their new forever home at Farm Sanctuary

Unrequired Love

Blame It on Love

SONY DSCYes, that’s unrequired, not unrequited love.

What real love entails, in my estimation, as defining it is too trite:

Ask yourself this:

Would you be fully willing to welcome whichever individual into your soul or your most private thoughts, even your dreams, without shame, with confidence they’ll not see any harmful wishes regarding them there? That they’ll see themselves thought of fondly and that you wish all good things for them, even if you know their faults, and you wish to be connected with them forever if that’s possible? That you’ll miss them terribly if there’s an afterlife and you don’t find them again? Do you dread the thought of never having met them or had them in your life?

And you’re not overly concerned about their judgment of your most personal inner workings, because you’re confident they love you in return, that they would welcome you into their private…

To start the day …. Don’t just study spirituality, live it!!

It Is What It Is

SpiritLearn

~~August 13, 2014~~

Traditionally spirituality has been defined as a process of personal transformation in accordance with religious ideals. Since the 19th century spirituality is often separated from religion, and has become more oriented on subjective experience and psychological growth. It may refer to almost any kind of meaningful activity or blissful experience, but without a single, widely-agreed definition.

Sunset on lake in New Zealand

~~Characteristics~~
Modern spirituality is centered on the “deepest values and meanings by which people live.”[93] It embraces the idea of an ultimate or an alleged immaterial reality. It envisions an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of his/her being.

Not all modern notions of spirituality embrace transcendental ideas. Secular spirituality emphasizes humanistic ideas on moral character (qualities such as love, compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, responsibility, harmony, and a concern for others). These are aspects of life and human experience which go beyond a purely materialist view of…

The Good That Men Do

Rantings From a Virtual Soapbox

Our task must be to free ourselves… by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.
Albert Einstein

Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.
Anatole France

It can so often seem that the world is a very uncaring place and animal, and indeed human, abuse is rife, it is as though we are drowning in cruelty and suffering. Yet in the midst of all the awfulness, all the exploitation, all the greed and suffering brought about by humans there are people who care deeply about animals. This blog entry focuses on people and organisations who dedicate their time and their resources to care for some of the abused and abandoned animals that would otherwise be left to suffer the misery, pain and death often inflicted upon them by uncaring humans. In due course I…

DiCaprio Raises $25 Million to Protect Environment | Ecorazzi

Life or Lunch?

leonardo-dicaprio1-600x450-1066x800Leonardo DiCaprio has friends in high places, which comes in handy when he’s trying to raise money to save the planet.

The award winning actor raised $25 million on Wednesday to protect the environment and endangered species.

The charity gala was held in the Riviera seaside resort of Saint-Tropez and the 500 guests, which included Academy award winner Marion Cotillard and soap star Joan Collins, paid between $7,000 and 130,000 to get in and participate in the auction for a good cause.

Before the bidding began, DiCaprio took the spotlight to explain just why raising funds was important. He reinforced the idea that the planet’s flora and animal species are being decimated at a rate not seen since the age of the dinosaurs.

The plea worked and among the biggest purchases were a Damien Hirst sculpture for $6 million by Russian-born billionaire Len Blavatnik and a Picasso drawing that…

Sunder: Now and the Next Steps

Our Compass

Written byPETA

Congratulations to everyone who helped with the #FreeSunder campaign! It was an enormous effort with a wonderful result. Sunder is now at his new home, as per the order of the Supreme Court.

PETA PETA

First, after getting off the truck, Sunder was given fruits. Along the road, he had become accustomed to and seemed to look forward to getting a treat at every stop!

Sunder has a terrible injury  on his leg from being chained too tightly for a long time. It is no doubt painful to him. Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) veterinarians and handlers say that initially Sunder will need to be kept lightly restrained until the injury is brought under control and has healed and until he gets to know the other elephants and the caretakers. He needs to trust that unlike his previous “caretakers” and mahout (handler), they are not out to…

"There is but one straight course, and that is to seek truth and pursue it steadily" – George Washington letter to Edmund Randolph — 1795. We live in a “post-truth” world. According to the dictionary, “post-truth” means, “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” Simply put, we now live in a culture that seems to value experience and emotion more than truth. Truth will never go away no matter how hard one might wish. Going beyond the MSM idealogical opinion/bias and their low information tabloid reality show news with a distractional superficial focus on entertainment, sensationalism, emotionalism and activist reporting – this blogs goal is to, in some small way, put a plug in the broken dam of truth and save as many as possible from the consequences—temporal and eternal. "The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it." – George Orwell “There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.” ― Soren Kierkegaard
