Poacher fined over $53,000 for killing elk in Colorado backyards: He ‘put a black eye on hunters’

Committee to Abolish Sport Hunting Blog

A man from Texas has had his hunting, fishing and trapping privileges suspended in 48 states — and been sentenced to pay more than 53,000 in fines — after pleading guilty to illegal hunting activities in Colorado.

Raymond P. Muse, 50, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of willful destruction of wildlife, as well as 11 other misdemeanor charges, in connection with the illegal poaching at least five elk from Evergreen and Conifer, “right under the noses or in the backyards” of local residents, officials with Colorado Parks and Wildlife said on Friday.

Officials say Muse would leave his car in a less suspicious area before hopping on his bike to scout and kill the elk.

Petition: Elephant Massacre in Botswana; Restore Anti-Poaching Units Now!

change.org

Nicole Rojas started this petition to President Mokgweetsi Masisi and 1 other

On September 3rd, 87 elephant carcasses were found near the Okavango Delta wildlife sanctuary in Botswana. This is an unprecedented massacre considering Botswana has been recognized as one of the formidable defenders and conservationists of wildlife in Africa.

Botswana is home to approximately 130,000 elephants. Due to its steadfast conservation, elephants from other countries were crossing the borders into Botswana for safety.

However, after the election of President Mokgweetsi Masisi in May of this year, anti-poaching units (APU) were removed from the country’s borders and the anti-poaching teams’ weapons were confiscated. If these APUs were present, this recent killing spree of elephants could have been thwarted successfully.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council in 2017, 74% of travel to Botswana was by tourists compared to business travel. Monies generated by tourists was 686.6 million USD or 7,119.6 million BWP (Botswana Pula) and this contributed to 26,000 jobs for 2017. The obvious reason tourists travel to Botswana is to see wildlife. If anti-poaching units are not restored, the number of wildlife will continue to dwindle and in effect lead to a loss of revenue and jobs, affecting the economy as a whole.

Each year approximately 35,000 elephants are killed in Africa. If their population continues to decline due to poaching, ecosystems will be affected. The presence of elephants in the delicate ecosystem is undeniably paramount in not only supporting other wildlife but for the people who live in Africa as well. Elephants in the wild aide in generating tourism dollars which fuels the economy that then helps to feed the hungry, finance education programs and enable health-care programs that save lives.

The wildlife presence in Botswana has an obvious overwhelming positive effect on human life. If we stand idly by, the loss of wildlife will have a negative effect in the quality of life for the people of Botswana.

President Mokgweetsi Masisi and the government of Botswana, your gravitas and solemnity are being beckoned by the world for you to restore the Anti-Poaching Units and arm game rangers. Your conservation efforts to protect the wildlife will in effect help your people and maintain the economy of Botswana.

Rhino poacher killed by elephant and then eaten by lions in South Africa, police say – CNN

Only a skull and a pair of trousers remained after the suspected rhino poacher was killed by an elephant and then eaten by lions in Kruger National Park, South Africa National Parks said.

The incident happened after the man entered the park Monday with four others to target rhinos, according to a parks service statement.

An elephant “suddenly” attacked the alleged poacher, killing him, and his accomplices claimed to have carried his body to the road that so that passerby, could find it in the morning. They then banished from the park, police said.

His family were notified of his death late Tuesday by his fellow poachers, and a search party set out to recover the body. Rangers scored on foot and police flew over the area, but because of the failing light he could not be found.

The search resumed Thursday morning and with the help of added field rangers, police discovered what was left of his body.

police say they arrested three men and seized guns fall in the alleged poachers death.

Indications found at the scene suggested that a pride of lions had devoured the remains leaving only a human skull and a pair of pants.

Petition: Legal Loopholes Are Giving Poachers Permission to Hunt Protected Birds

by: Margherita B
recipient: Malta

Thousands of birds fly over Malta during the migratory season.

And thousands are killed, both legally and illegally. Illegal killings amount to more than 200,000 birds per year — and these are only the documented ones.

Legally, birds that are protected worldwide (including storks) can be shot and caught in nets in Malta, by taking advantage of loopholes that allow hunters to collect birds for “traditional” and “cultural” practices. The black stork is an extremely rare bird and people have been shooting them, using these loopholes.

Although not as screen-worthy as the slaughtering of dolphins in other countries, what happens in Malta is no different. There is no need to hunt these protected species — they are protected for a reason!

These loopholes must be filled and Malta has to abide by the rest of the EU’s laws. Currently, Malta is considered a true sinkhole for migratory birds — this has to change. Malta, stop this slaughter now!

Sign Petition: Stop Bird Hunting on the Lake Earl Wildlife Refuge

thepetitionsite.com

To be delivered to Jeffrey Stoddard, Program Manager, Charlton H. Bonham, Director, Governor Gavin Newsom, The California State House, The California State Senate.

We the undersigned request that California Department of Fish and Wildlife end hunting on the Lake Earl Wildlife Refuge. Hunting defeats the purpose of a tax payer supported wildlife refuge.

As grounds for this petition we request the state of California to take notice of the following:

1) Prior to 1971, Lakeview Drive, formerly known as Lake Earl Road, did not dead end at the lake, resulting in a walk of more than 1,000 feet. The exercise of the county’s easement to the lake has significantly increased hunters, fisherman, and crime.

2) Little if anything that is killed along the lake is ever taken home and a number of pictures proving this are in the possession of the originator of this petition.

3) Residents along Lakeview Drive have had to contend with an ongoing traffic problem from hunters and fisherman who use the lake, as well as those who visit the lake after dark to do their drug deal.

4) The whole concept of hunting on a taxpayer supported Wildlife Refuge defeats the purpose of having the wildlife refuge and the California Dept of Fish and Widlife has a conflict of interest because they receive money from hunting licenses which support staffing and officers to visit the lake.

  1. Some of the dead animals in the piles surrounding the lake include endangered species which is not surprising since a hunter can’t tell the difference as to what he is killing when the bird is almost completely out of visual range.
  2. With respect to over fishing, because of salt water contamination caused by incompetent breaching, the only fish that is capable of living in this lagoon (formerly a lake) is sturgeon who’s numbers have dwindled so much due to overfishing that the fish’s presence in the lake is almost extinct. Fisherman will commonly kill every sturgeon they can get their hands on, gut the fish for the eggs, and the leave the rotting fish carcasses on the side of the road at the entrance to Lake Earl.

  3. A number of hobby farmers around the lake have reported hunters killing their geese in front of their homes.

For these reasons we the undersigned request that hunting and fishing be permanently banned on Lake Earl.

BACKGROUND

Hunting on the Lake Earl Wildlife Preserve, particularly off of Lakeview Drive destroys the natural serenity and peace of this community. Visitors around the lake wake up to the sound of gunfire which is hardly inviting to people who come here to vacation and enjoy the redwoods and natural beauty.

Additionally since the county exercised its easement on Lakeview Drive, formerly Lake Earl Road, the number of hunters, fisherman, and people using the Lake Access area has increased exponentially to where there is nothing less than a big crowd. The resulting humanity has left trash in the streets, increased crime, and a steady parade of traffic all night long that is disturbing the residents on this street.

Other factors are that most of the dead animals the hunters kill are left on the street and rarely taken home, and I have pictures to prove it. This includes dead dear, big piles of dead birds. Yet the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is defiant and will not change their position.

And still another factor is that a number of endangered species have shown up in the dead piles of animals and it isn’t possible for the hunter to determine what species a bird is when it is more than 100 feet higher than where he is standing.

And most importantly it is completely ludicrous for the California tax payers to pay for a Wildlife Preserve when the state is making money from hunting licenses on this property. It defeats the whole purpose. As the record stands, the state would be better off giving the property back to the Tolowa Indian Tribe who’s land was taken away from them by force during a big massacre.

Father Sentenced To Only 3 Months In Jail After Killing Mother Bear and Her Newborn Cubs, While Son Only Receives 30 Days Suspension – World Animal News

By Karen Lane –
January 24, 2019

A father has been sentenced to jail time after he and his son were caught on camera killing a mother bear and her cubs in April of 2018.
After both men pleaded guilty to multiple counts, including illegal killing of the mother bear and her cubs, the father, Andrew Renner, was sentenced on Tuesday to three months in jail while his 18-year-old son Owen Renner received only 30 days of suspended time in connection with the killings.
Clearly, the punishment does not fit the crime for this senseless killing.
The mother bear that was killed was one of 20 fitted with collars for a three-year study that started in 2016, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The study by the department and Chugach National Forest came in response to concerns about declining numbers of black bears in Prince William Sound.
A U.S. Forest Service employee reported the deaths of the mother bear and her cubs to Alaska Wildlife Troopers on April 23rd 2018.
As previously reported by WAN, the shocking slaughter was caught on video by a motion-activated camera outside the den. After they shot the mother bear, they dragged her from the den and realized she had a Fish and Game collar. It also captured Andrew Renner saying, ‘I’m gonna get rid of these guys’ while tossing the cubs’ limp carcasses onto the snow outside the den, the documents said.
The clip captured the younger Renner saying, ‘We got the collar off.’ Next, Andrew Renner said, ‘We’re gonna skin it that way,’ and points away from the den. Owen Renner agrees, saying, ‘They’ll never be able to link it to us.’ They proceed to butcher the sow and place it in game bags, then ski away.
Andrew Renner took the black bear sow to a state wildlife office on April 30th, claiming he and his son had killed it near Granite Bay in Prince William Sound on April 14th, clearly lying.
Troopers said that while interviewing Renner, he said he had skinned the bear, brought the collar, and expressed that he had no knowledge of the mother bear having cubs, and that no cubs were in the area, yet another scathing lie.
Thankfully, everything was caught on camera and Renner and his son have been exposed.
Assistant Attorney General Aaron Peterson said the case was the “most egregious bear cub poaching case his office has ever seen.”

Breaking! Andrew Pashley’s Light Sentence For Poaching & Illegal Hunting In Colorado Could End With A Lifetime Suspension Of Hunting Privileges In 48 States – World Animal News

ByLauren Lewis –
December 28, 2018

A Colorado Parks and Wildlife investigation into illegal hunting and outfitting reports over the course of several years resulted in a felony conviction of Andrew Pashley of Evergreen, Colorado.
The 35-year-old pled guilty to the illegal sale of big game wildlife, a Class 6 felony, as well as illegal possession of a Mountain Lion on November 8th in Jefferson County District Court.
Pashley has never been registered as an outfitter by the state of Colorado.
A Jefferson County judge sentenced Pashley to two years of supervised probation and a court-ordered suspension of all hunting, fishing, and trapping related activities in Colorado. Pursuant to his felony conviction, Pashley is restricted from possessing a firearm or other weapon, even for hunting purposes.
As part of the adjudication of the criminal and civil cases in this investigation, Pashley was ordered to forfeit the truck that he used for his illegal outfitting business, cash that was paid to him for the illegal mountain lion hunt, as well as all the hunting equipment he owned for his hounds.
While the punishment seems hardly enough, the department shared in a statement that Pashley’s conviction makes him eligible for up to a lifetime suspension of all hunting, fishing and trapping privileges in Colorado. This is including the other 47 states in the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact, to be determined by CPW’s suspension hearing examiner at a later date.
Help put pressure on CPW to rule for the lifetime suspension. Please contact The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Headquarters in Denver at (303) 297-1192 or email: parksinfo@state.co.us.

Nine arrested in Florida for ‘baiting, taking and molesting’ black bears

nypost.com
By Post Staff Report
December 22, 2018 | 10:05am
A black bear

Florida just became more unbearable.

Nine people were arrested in the Sunshine State this week for “baiting, taking and molesting” black bears and then posting the beat-downs on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, according to a release from the office of the attorney general.

The black bear bullies used dog food, doughnuts, pastries and peanut butter to corner the animals and then unleashed a “dozen dogs that repeatedly bit” them.

The forest fight clubs happened in Baker, Flagler, Marion and Union Counties, according to a statement on the year-long investigation which concluded this week.

“Not only were these gruesome acts of violence repulsive and cruel, they were recorded and posted to social media for the amusement of the defendants,” said Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi. “I doubt they are laughing any longer now that they have been arrested for serious crimes.”

Christopher Elliot Haun, 42; William Landrum, 39; Mark Lindsey, 26; Dustin Reddish, 25; Haley Reddish, 25; Charles Luther Scarbrough III, 30; Hannah Weiner Scarbrough, 27; Troy Travis Starling, 45; and William Tyler Wood, 29, were slapped animal cruelty and other charges.

WAN Talks With Center For Biological Diversity’s, Ileene Anderson, About $15,000 Rewards Offered For Information Regarding The Killing Of 2 Endangered California Condors – World Animal News

By Lauren Lewis –
October 12, 2018

This week, the Center for Biological Diversity tripled rewards from $5,000.00 to $15,000.00, for information leading to the arrests and convictions of the person or people responsible in two separate cases of the killing of California condors.
Condors, the largest flying land birds in the Western Hemisphere, are protected under California law and the federal Endangered Species Act.
The first condor was killed in Tulare County, California, in May of this year but was not announced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service until September.
Ileene Anderson, a senior scientist with the Center, told WAN that while the details are “sketchy” as to why it took the division so long to report the incident, it may have been because they were waiting for the results of a necropsy to confirm that the bird was in fact, shot to death.
Sadly, the first condor’s cause of death was ultimately determined to be due to trauma from a gunshot wound. The condor was reportedly found dead on private property near the Blue Ridge National Wildlife Refuge; an area where the condors have been returning over the past few years.

Photo from Gary Kramer, USFWS
The second condor was also unlawfully shot and killed in July; this time in Kern County. The bird was discovered near the Bitter Creek Wildlife Refuge.
Two dead condors within several months? It’s unfathomable.
Justice must be served for the condors who were tragically killed, as well as for the remaining birds which are repopulating in the state.
“In 1987, there were only 22 condors believed to be left on the planet,” Anderson told WAN. “Now, there are an estimated 200. It’s exciting.”
Anderson explained that as the condors continue to move up the Sierras, they will most-likely move into other states such as Oregon and Washington.
While the growth of the condor population is positive, the shooting and killing of them is NOT!
“We hope this additional reward pushes anyone with knowledge to come forward so that these ugly crimes can be fully prosecuted,” said Anderson.
The Fish and Wildlife Service is contributing $5,000.00 to both reward funds with the Center of Biological Diversity offering an additional $10,000.00 to each as well.
Anyone with details of the incident should call the U.S. Wildlife Service’s Office of Law Enforcement in Sacramento at (916) 569-8476. Callers can remain anonymous.

petition: Someone Is Shooting Live Deer With Arrows – Find the Abuser Now!

by: Care2 Team
target: Oregon State Police

40,882 SUPPORTERS – 45,000 GOAL
Last month, Central Point Fish and Wildlife Troopers were called to investigate a live deer who had been shot with an arrow in Shady Cove, Oregon. Sadly, that evening, a trooper found not one, but two deer who had arrows sticking out of them. On top of that, there’s reason to believe a third deer was shot too.

Please sign this petition urging the Oregon State Police to find the sick person who did this and bring them to justice now!

Luckily, the deer are expected to be alright, but the person or persons who did this must still be caught.

Whoever did these cruel acts isn’t just a danger to animals, but they’re a danger to people as well. There are plenty of studies that show an irrefutable link between violence against animals and and violence against people. Many of the world’s most heinous violent criminals got their start torturing or killing animals.

As a matter of public safety for all, Oregon State Police must do everything they can to find the perpetrators. Sign this petition now.

134 Dead Birds Of Prey Found On Richard Parker’s NorCal Property In “Largest Raptor Poaching Case In California History” – World Animal News

http://worldanimalnews.com/134-dead-birds-prey-found-richard-parkers-norcal-property-largest-raptor-poaching-case-california-history/

BREAKING NEWS
By WAN –
March 19, 2018
Photos from CDFW
Wildlife officers in Northern California uncovered what is likely to be the largest raptor poaching case in the state’s history.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) made the announcement after wildlife officers assigned to Lassen County followed up on a tip and visited a private property in a town near Standish.
When nine dead raptors were found on the property owned by 67-year-old Richard Parker, a search warrant was issued.

When officers returned on March 11th with a CDFW K-9, a search of the 80-acre property resulted in the discovery of a staggering number of raptor carcasses, other dead birds and wildlife. Spent rifle casings indicated that there were more than 140 potential state and or federal violations.
In addition to the original nine birds, they found 126 more birds that hunt and feed on other animals, all in various states of decay. Most of the birds were red-tailed hawks, as well as one dead owl and an uncommon migratory ferruginous hawk.
Officers also located two dead bobcats, one taxidermied mountain lion, as well as other birds, all suspected to be unlawfully taken.
Parker was booked into Lassen County jail on multiple charges including the take of birds of prey, take of migratory non-game birds as designated by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, take of other non-game birds, and possession of wildlife unlawfully taken. Additional charges may be added as the investigation proceeds.
Staff at CDFW’s Wildlife Investigations Laboratory in Rancho Cordova are working to positively identify the species of all of the birds.
As the top bird predators in the food chain, raptors serve an important role in the ecosystem by controlling rodent and small mammal populations. However, they are also particularly susceptible to environmental stressors such as drought and habitat loss. For these reasons, biologists refer to them as an indicator species.
Standish is located near Honey Lake and the Honey Lake Wildlife Area, with habitat that supports a rich diversity and quantity of wildlife. The sheer number of birds poached on the 80-acre property will undoubtedly affect the raptor population in the immediate area.
“Poaching crimes of this egregious nature against raptors is unprecedented in California,” said David Bess, CDFW Deputy Director and Chief of the Law Enforcement Division. “The local raptor population may take years to recover from these killings.”
Each potential violation is a misdemeanor poaching crime at the state level, with maximum penalties of six months in jail and up to a $5,000.00 fine per each raptor. An unlawfully taken mountain lion could result in a $10,000.00 penalty. Each potential federal crime could result in additional penalties and possible jail time.

Wisconsin’s War on Wildlife 008: “He’s Still Alive…I Know!”

Wolf Patrol

Today we are sharing the last of the videos from Nicholas Valenta’s Facebook page, which show him directing his hunting hounds to mercilessly tear into a wounded coyote as he and he friends stand by laughing, watching…and filming. Hunting coyotes with hounds with Valenta isn’t only dangerous for his prey, but anyone within range of his friends shotgun blasts. In this and other videos, hunters can be seen running through the snow with what’s presumed to be loaded weapons taking shots at coyotes as they run.

NV 2011 VID SCREENSHOT Nicholas Valenta’s Facebook post accompanying above video.

Wolf Patrol is presenting these videos to the public because we know this is only the tip of the iceberg as far as cruelty and animal abuse go with the “sport” of hunting coyotes with hounds, which is at its peak in winter and early Spring. In the past, Wolf Patrol has been accused of staging illegal bait…

Urgent! Help Needed In Alberta, Canada, To Identify Poacher Who Illegally Shot Cougar Before Leaving Its Body In The Snow – World Animal News

http://worldanimalnews.com/urgent-help-needed-alberta-canada-identify-poacher-illegally-shot-cougar-leaving-body-snow/

By WAN –
March 5, 2018
Wildlife officials in Alberta, Canada, are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the poacher or poachers who illegally killed a cougar and abandoned its carcass west of Cochrane.
The Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement issued the appeal for help, along with a heartbreaking photo of the dead animal on its Facebook page over the weekend.
“In Alberta, it is unlawful to abandon the skin of a mountain lion that has been hunted,” noted the post which in turn brought attention to a bigger problem, the fact that hunting cougars in Alberta is still legal under specific guidelines. “Furthermore, the cougar season was closed in the relevant cougar management area at the time of the offense.”
Alberta reportedly has regulated its cougar population since 1969 allowing for an annual quota of up to 155 animals to be hunted each year. Terrible!
According to the post, which, as of this morning has been shared more than 6,000 times, a pair of green and brown work gloves were also found on the scene where a campfire was left burning.

The person or persons found responsible for this crime could face up to a $50,000.00 fine and or one year in jail.
People with information that may lead to the arrest of those responsible, can confidentially contact the 24-hour Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800 or online via its new Report A Poacher website.
“Phoning is still the fastest way to reach an officer,” the department noted, “the new website can be used to report issues that are less urgent.

Wolf Patrol Launches Video Campaign Exposing Wisconsin’s Wild Animal Abuse

Wolf Patrol

These are the videos Wisconsin’s politicians and trophy hunters are desperately trying to keep Wolf Patrol from sharing with the public. The videos presented here were not filmed by Wolf Patrol, but by the hound hunters themselves and shared on social media. Wolf Patrol will be releasing one such video every day, to illustrate the systematic abuse of wildlife disguised as hunting in Wisconsin.

This is what legalized hunting with dogs looks like in Wisconsin, and if you don’t like it, please share your displeasure by calling the Wisconsin elected officials listed below who are calling for an end to Wolf Patrol’s monitoring of controversial hunting practices in Wisconsin. Let them know you stand with public trust wildlife and disagree with their use of public office to push their pro-trophy hunting agenda.

Massacre of polar bears by ‘trophy hunters’ on remote Arctic island

The gruesome evidence of illegal hunting was found on uninhabited Vilkitsky Island in the Kara Sea.

The carcasses and used gun cartridges were found by members of an ecological clean-up team sent to the remote territory.

Summer thawing meant the polar bear remains became visible.

There are claims that local police initially sought to cover up the crime – possibly suggesting an elite hunting group was involved in the bloody massacre. But the prosecutor’s office subsequently opened a criminal probe.

Andrey Baryshnikov, head of the Russian Centre of Arctic Exploration, said: ‘When they spotted the carcasses they immediately got in touch with me via satellite connection because this is a very serious case.

‘We passed the information to the police.’

A case was opened once law enforcement received the gruesome pictures of the polar bear remains.

‘For now we cannot say exactly how old the bears were, or whether they were were male, female or cubs; nor is it clear how long the carcasses were there.’

Deputy governor of Yamalo-Nenets autonomous region Alexander Mazharov said: ‘There were many polar bears at Vilkitsky island and unfortunately poachers came to hunt them.

‘Our guys have already found several dead bodies of the animals.

‘Now we are gathering information. We won’t let them get away with it.’

The slaughter of Red Book polar bears is illegal under international and Russian laws.

In April 2017 there was an expedition by Russian Geographic Society to Vilkitsky,’ said Baryshnikov.

‘They found a skin of a freshly killed polar bear. The offenders were caught very quickly and as I heard they were sentenced already.

‘These bears were not spotted then because they were under the snow obviously.’

There are prolific numbers of bears on Vilkitsky Island ‘and poachers obviously know that’, he said.

‘The investigation is ongoing.’

Yet there are also now reports that there are now no bears left on the isolated island.

The island is nine kilometres wide and about 18 km long, or 40 km including Vostochnaya Spit.

Discovered in 1874, it was named after Lieutenant General Andrei Vilkitsky (1858-1913).

The Department of Justice’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today that four men have been charged for their involvement in the illegal trafficking of alligator snapping turtles.

Alligator snapping turtles are the largest freshwater turtles in the world and can grow to weigh more than 200 pounds with a lifespan of more than 100 years. The turtles are designated as threatened with statewide extinction under Texas state law which strictly prohibits anyone from taking, capturing, transporting, or selling these turtles, or attempting to do so.

In one indictment, Travis Leger and Rickey Simon, both of Sulphur, Louisiana, and Jason Leckelt of Wilburton, Oklahoma, are charged with conspiracy and Lacey Act violations for illegally taking about 66 alligator snapping turtles in Texas and then transporting them back to their property in Sulphur, Louisiana, for sale in the Spring and Summer of 2016. In July 2016, federal agents seized 30 large alligator snapping turtles from ponds located at the defendants’ property in Sulphur, Louisiana, pursuant to a federal search warrant. The indictment also charges Leger with making a false statement to federal agents and charges Rickey Simon with destroying evidence during the execution of the federal warrant. In a separate indictment, Montaro Williams of Elton, Louisiana, is charged with a Lacey Act violation for illegally taking two alligator snapping turtles in Texas and then attempting to transport them to Louisiana for sale on Aug. 12, 2013.

Leger was arrested today in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and made his initial appearance in federal court there. Simon, Leckelt, and Williams were arrested earlier this month.

An indictment is an allegation based upon a finding of probable cause by a federal grand jury, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, the defendants face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the conspiracy, Lacey Act, and false statement charges and up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the destruction of evidence charge.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph E. Batte of the Eastern District of Texas and Senior Trial Attorney David P. Kehoe of the Department of Justice, Environmental Crimes Section, prosecuted the case. The case is being investigated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Hundreds of rare snow leopards illegally killed every year: study | Reuters

Hundreds of snow leopards are killed illegally every year in remote mountains from China to Tajikistan, further endangering the big cats that number only a few thousand in the wild, a report said on Friday.

Prices ranged up to $10,000 for the carcasses, prized for thick light-colored fur with dark spots, according to the study by TRAFFIC, an international network which monitors wildlife trade.

An estimated 221 to 450 snow leopards were killed annually since 2008 despite bans in 12 Asian nations where they live, it said. TRAFFIC said there were many uncertainties because the leopards live in inaccessible regions including the Himalayas.

About half were shot by farmers to protect goats, sheep and other livestock, with many carcasses then sold, it said. Others were targeted by poachers or trapped in snares meant to catch other animals such as deer.

Still, it said there were some successes in protecting the animals. Only one leopard skin was found on sale in the central Chinese city of Linxia in a 2011 survey, against 60 in 2007.

A Red List of endangered species estimates the global population of snow leopards at between 4,080 and 6,590. International trade in snow leopards has been banned since 1975.

Before that, according to TRAFFIC, one 1960s U.S. fur coat advertisement, for instance, said:
Also In Environment

“Untamed … the Snow Leopard, provocatively dangerous. A mankiller. Born free in the wild whiteness of the high Himalayas only to be snared as part of the captivating new fur collection”.

Illegal Hunts in Whale Sanctuary Must Be Stopped

Hundreds of whales will be hunted and killed in the Southern Ocean, despite this being illegal. Neighboring countries have done little to prevent this slaughter. Urge the Australian government to help halt this massacre by disclosing the whaling fleet’s location.

"There is but one straight course, and that is to seek truth and pursue it steadily" – George Washington letter to Edmund Randolph — 1795. We live in a “post-truth” world. According to the dictionary, “post-truth” means, “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” Simply put, we now live in a culture that seems to value experience and emotion more than truth. Truth will never go away no matter how hard one might wish. Going beyond the MSM idealogical opinion/bias and their low information tabloid reality show news with a distractional superficial focus on entertainment, sensationalism, emotionalism and activist reporting – this blogs goal is to, in some small way, put a plug in the broken dam of truth and save as many as possible from the consequences—temporal and eternal. "The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it." – George Orwell “There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.” ― Soren Kierkegaard
