Extraordinary Young Heroes, Peter & Gerry Cedras, Walk Miles To Save Beloved Dog’s Life In South Africa – World Animal News

By Lauren Lewis –
August 17, 2018

Peter and Gerry Cedras with beloved dog. Photos by Jack Lestrade,African News Agency (ANA).
Two young brothers, whose family lost everything in a fire, set a remarkable example of compassion and selflessness this week in South Africa after walking miles to save the life of their neighbor’s sick dog.
The boys, 14-year-old Peter and eight-year-old Gerry, carried the German Shepherd mix through rough terrain from their tiny farmhouse, which has no running water or electricity, to the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) in Philippi.

Gerry made the trek barefoot as he lost his shoes in the fire. Peter had saved R7 which he was going to put towards buying Gerry a pair of shoes but the brothers opted to spend the money on saving the dog’s life instead.
The Animal Welfare Society shared the remarkable story on its Facebook page, deservedly calling the boys “heroic little souls.”
“These two local heroes need to be publicly lauded for quite literally going the extra mile for their beloved dog,” the AWS noted in the post sharing that they gave Peter a full refund and Gerry a much-needed pair of shoes.
AWS explained that Lady, or Maisie as the boys prefer to call her, was found to be suffering from tick-bite fever which can be fatal especially if left untreated.
“The brothers clearly adore the dog and noticed that she was unwell when she went off her food,” the organization shared in the post. “They did not want her to suffer and deteriorate so they cleverly decided to bring her to us for assessment and treatment at their earliest opportunity. We NEVER turn any animal in need away.”

“We hope that their devotion, compassion and initiative inspires other pet owners to take good care of their pets, to be alert to when their pets appear unwell and very importantly to treat their pets for ticks and fleas and to never hesitate to seek professional veterinary advise and care,” continued the post.
The organization further explained that since Lady was admitted by minors they sent a nurse to the farm to discuss the case with their parents and obtained written consent to use the photographs of the two boys for general media and educational purposes.
“Whatever we end up investing in saving Lady will be money well spent and warm our donors’ hearts,” AWS shared. “For now, our primary focus is on Lady and we hope that this heart-warming case will inspire the public to show support for us so that we can continue to assist other deserving cases.
Generous people are responding to the post with donations and offers to help not only the dog but the boys and their family!
For more information on how to get involved in helping, please contact Allan at 078 631 5126 or email him at allanperrins@awscape.org.za.
Donations to the Animal Welfare Society in Philippi can be made HERE!
AWS shared its banking details for people wanting to donate towards Lady aka Maisie’s care. It also noted that those doing an EFT should put “Maisie” as the reference and then email proof of payment to admin@awscape.org.za so that it can be properly allocated.

Petition update · ABAL IS HOME! · Change.org

Apr 16, 2018 — Early this morning we braved the hard rain and weather to go pick up K-9 Abal. As he was coming out of the truck to come inside our house I was lucky enough to snap a picture of him giving my husband a kiss. ( I guess all is forgiven, at least for Abal).
These past 12 days have been some of the longest and hardest days for us. The worry for K9 Abal was intense at times not knowing where he was, how he was feeling, and how he was being treated. All that is over now thank God! We can now concentrate on making sure he is happy and healthy. I think I may even start a Facebook and Twitter page for him (now that I have learned how to use it).
When I started this petition I was hoping for maybe at least 500 signatures. I figured I would be lucky to get that. I really didn’t know if I could get K9 Abal back. Needless to say, I am blown away that when all is said and done 169k people signed and supported us! So, THANK YOU! we could NEVER have done this without all of you!
Special thanks to Congressman Bob Brady, who spoke out publicly in support of K9 Abal and our family. Thank you Sen. Sweeney who took the time to write a beautiful letter to Chief Nestel in our defense. Thank you also to the National Police Association, K9s4cops.org, K9 Chip, and his family, and K9 Poseidon and his family. Thank you to the FOTP FOP Lodge 109. A big thanks to the 99% of SEPTA Police who supported us! Thank you to the members of the press who put this story out there for the public to hear. And again to all of you who signed, wrote, called, tweeted, and shared our story. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts❣️

Petition: Help Me Keep Sgt. Schultz! Pigs need the same rights as other pets, Massachusetts

by: Evan M
target: Town of Hudson, Massachusetts

1,836 SUPPORTERS in Massachusetts
55,000 GOAL

It has come to my attention that my town of Hudson, MA requires 60,000 sq ft of property to own a pig as a domestic pet. These laws were established over a decade ago in order to control breeding, and ensure proper sanitation for pigs raised as a food source. If this old rule is enforced, I would need to give up my dear pet miniature pig, Sgt. Schultz or move out of town!

It is now 2018 and these outdated laws don’t recognize what constitutes a domestic pet. Sgt. Schultz is a miniature pig (90% Juliana/10% pot-bellied), a wonderful companion animal and I couldn’t imagine being forced to give him up. Some people do not see a pig as a pet, but pet pigs are growing in popularity as the animals are being recognized as gentle and intelligent animals. Some experts say pig intelligence ranks third only to apes and dolphins!

Pigs are not only easily trained but are extremely clean and well-behaved. This petition is not meant to bypass town ordinances, but apply them equally. Please help me keep Sgt. Schultz and pave the way for equal footing for other wonderful and nurturing companions.

Allow military exceptions during the Petsafe suspension · Change.org

PetSafe Reservation Embargo 03/20/18
Effective immediately, we are not accepting any new reservations for PetSafe travel. As of March 20, 2018, we will honor existing PetSafe reservations confirmed as well as assist any customer that wishes to cancel their reservation. This suspension does not affect pets that travel with us in-cabin.

We are taking this voluntary action to conduct a thorough and systematic review of our PetSafe program and make improvements that will ensure the best possible experience for our customers and their pets. We expect to complete our review by May 1, 2018.

My family, along with many other U.S. military families stationed in Guam, are deeply affected by this suspension. There was not much notice before United’s announcement and unfortunately United is the only U.S. airline currently servicing Guam. With the nature of how PCS(Permanent Change of Station) moves work, we simply don’t have the option to postpone our travel until United fully reviews their Petsafe procedures. We have to move when we are told to move by the military. None of our families want to leave our furry family members behind but we might be forced to do just that if United doesn’t allow a military exception during this time. To United we are just another section of business, but to military families on Guam United is our only option. We NEED an exception to be made.

Little Girl With Autism Is So Happy Her Dog Is Finally Home

For a little girl, even a single night without your best friend in the whole world is too long.
For 7-year-old Maddison Armer, 19 nights without her dog, Darla, was an eternity.

Ever since Darla was a puppy, the two were inseparable.

And Darla has been instrumental in helping Maddison deal with her autism.

But on July 16, their connection was suddenly shattered when officers from Lancashire Constabulary seized Darla on suspicion of being a pit bull.

In the days that followed, Maddison was inconsolable.

She locked herself in the family’s bathroom. She climbed a tree, hoping she might be able to see where police took her dog — and fell out, spending two days in the hospital with a broken wrist.
But on Thursday, Maddison Armer was finally reunited with her best friend. And a family was made whole again.

“I am so happy,” Maddison’s mother, Jenny Armer, posted on Facebook. “We are all in tears. I’m so happy I could just screeeaaaammm.”
A video of Darla’s homecoming posted to Facebook makes it all too clear that Darla felt the same way about being separated from her family. In the clip, Darla can barely contain herself, bouncing from one family member to the next, her tail whirring like a helicopter.

While the Lancashire Constabulary did not return requests for comment, Jenny Armer noted in her Facebook post that an independent expert’s assessment played a key role in winning Darla’s freedom.
It’s not uncommon for dogs seized under England’s Dangerous Dogs Act to be returned to their owners following a period of behavioural assessment and observation. In fact, in Belfast, where the ban is also enforced, 10 out of 11 seized dogs have been returned to their families, according to a press release sent to The Dodo by Belfast City Council.

Authorities in Lancashire appear to have made a similar exception for Darla, whom the family describes as a very friendly mix between a shar-pei and a Staffordshire bull terrier.

When police took Darla, her family was told they could either sign a disclaimer to have Darla euthanized or fight the decision in court.

For a while, it seemed like Darla would meet the fate of some 5,000 dogs across England and Wales who have been put down in the last three years. It isn’t much better in parts of the U.S. and Canada, where breed-specific legislation (BSL) is still tearing families apart.

But Darla was given a reprieve — much like a dog named Hank, who was seized just two days before Darla from his family in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Both dogs are now home with their families where they belong.

And let no law come between them.

10 Amazing Dads From The Animal Kingdom | Care2 Causes

Not all non-human animal dads are cut out for family life, but there are a number of species who have become known for their role as fathers who deserve a salute, from giant water bugs who carry dozens of eggs on their backs to males who actually get pregnant and dads who operate solo as single parents. This Father’s Day, it’s time to celebrate some of the amazing dads from the animal kingdom who go above and beyond when it comes raising and protecting their young.

Red Fox

Male red foxes aren’t just loving mates, but excited and protective fathers. They take on the task of providing food for their mates every few hours for about a month after she gives birth. Then they take on the role of teacher – but teachers who like to take time out to play. Even when it’s time to get serious and teach their young how to start finding their own food, fox dads help them out and make sure they don’t really go hungry by hiding it near their dens.

Red Fox Family
Emperor Penguin

After females lay a single precious egg, Emperor penguin dads take over the responsibility of incubating it by balancing it precariously on their feet and keeping it warm under their feathers in the frigid Antarctic weather while mothers go off to feed. Dads can go for about two months without eating until the egg hatches, at which point he will feed it before mother’s return to give them a break from baby-duty.

Emperor Penguin Protecting Offspring from the Cold

Sea Horse

Seahorses, who are also known to mate for life, have reverse roles; the females compete for males, and the males don’t just play a role in pregnancy, but actually get pregnant. Females deposit their eggs in the male’s pouch, where he fertilizes and carries them until tiny baby seahorses emerge fully developed. According to Science Daily, the process of male pregnancy is unique to the fish family Syngnathidae, which also includes pipefish and sea dragons.
Love This? Never Miss Another Story.

Black seahorse among seaweed

Spotted Sandpiper

It doesn’t happen every time, but sandpipers have been found to reverse roles where female sandpipers establish and defend territory, while taking on multiple male partners. After luring a male to mate with and laying her eggs, she takes off to find another mate. Dad meanwhile stays to incubate the eggs and becomes the primary caregiver for the young for the first few weeks of their lives.

Spotted Sandpiper

Gray Wolf

Despite the myths surrounding wolves that make them out to be villains, alpha male are loving, loyal and protective mates, fathers and leaders. Also known to mate for life, males who breed will guard their partners and pups while they’re in the den and take on the responsibility of finding everyone food. Even as pups grow older, dads will take on the role of teacher, helping them learn their role in the pack and the world.

Mother and Son

Great Horned Owl

Great horned owl dads are the stereotypical breadwinners in their families. After finding the perfect home with their mates, male great horned owls take on the role of provider by hunting enough to feed himself and his mate, who is bigger than he is, before taking on the added responsibility of hunting for their young when they hatch.

Grumpy Owl

North American Beaver

Beaver dads are devoted family men, handymen and providers in the animal world. They mate for life and take on a co-parenting role in raising their young until they’re about 2-years-old, while helping care for them and teaching them how to become successful ecosystem engineers before they go off and start families of their own.

In 2012, a beaver in Martinez, Calif., known as “Dad” raised fears about what would happen to his young after his mate died from an infection, but he showed us he could do it all as a single father of three.

Beaver Wearing Leaf

Titi Monkey

Male titi monkeys, who are known for monogamous relationships, are also known for the strong bond they build with their young as primary caregivers. Except for time spent with mom nursing, babies spend the rest of their time being carried around, cared for and protected by their fathers for the first few months of their lives.

Titi Monkey

As members of a polygamous species, male rheas have a lot of partners, but when it comes to child-rearing these dads pull their weight and then some. Males can have up to a dozen or so female partners who all lay eggs in a nest he builds before they leave. Males then take on the role of incubating and guarding what can be more than 50 eggs for close to two months before taking on the role of a single parent after they hatch. Males have also been known to adopt orphaned chicks who have been separated from their brood.

Nandu Greater Rhea

Darwin‘s Frog

Darwin’s frog dads, who are native to South America, have come up with a neat and bizarre way to protect their offspring from predators. While they breed like other amphibians, where females lay eggs in the water that are fertilized by males, the males of this species take the fertilized eggs into their mouths, store them in their vocal sacs and keep them there until they’re fully developed frogs — at which point he throws them up.

Dolphin Escapes Captivity, Finds Her Family In The Wild And Has A Baby

In an unprecedented tale of survival and hope against all odds, a formerly captive dolphin named Sampal has given birth to a healthy calf after finding her own way back to her family and freedom in the open ocean.

Sampal’s story began in 2009, when she was accidentally netted by fishermen off the coast of South Korea. Rather than returning her back to the water, as the law dictates, those who caught her instead did the unthinkable — they sold her to a local marine park featuring dolphin shows.

It’s there that, for nearly four years, Sampal languished in a tiny pool where she was forced to perform tricks for entertainment. Though thoroughly robbed of any semblance of a natural life, she evidently never stopped longing for her life in the wild.

Fortunately, reprieve from her captivity came in 2013 when, at the behest of animal activists, a Korean high court ordered Sampal be set free. Along with other wild-caught dolphins held captive, she was moved to a sea pen to begin months of rehabilitation to ready her for release.

Sampal, however, had no interest in waiting. Months ahead of schedule, she slipped through a tear in the pen and disappeared into the ocean beyWikiped
Though there were concerns initially that Sampal was not yet reequipped with the skills needed to survive at sea, those were soon quelled. Just days after escaping, she was spotted 60 miles away, swimming with a pod believed to be her original family.

Sampal was finally home — but her story doesn’t end there.

Last month, a team from two Korean universities started seeing her again, only this time she was in the company of a calf.

“We have spotted Sampal and her baby swimming in a mother-calf position many times during the recent three weeks,” researcher Jang Soo-jin told the news agency Yonhap. “Strict criteria applied show that they are parent and child.”

This is believed to be the first time a dolphin freed from captivity has gone on to start a family in the wild, and it need not be the last.

While Sampal’s offspring will hopefully never know the sad life her mother had to endure, there are countless others like her in marine parks around the globe — all eager to overcome imprisonment to forge their own new legacies of freedom.

8 Reasons Pit Bulls Are Better Than Most People

Emilio Cogliani

I do and say a lot of ridiculous things, and people don’t bat an eyelash. I walk my pit bull down the street, and I get the strangest looks I’ve ever seen. People look at me, then at my pit pull, then back at me with confusion, disgust, fear, or any mix of those.

Pit bulls get a bad rap, and they haven’t earned it. It’s the jerks who train pit bulls (and other breeds) to be aggressive that deserve the bad rap. Those are the ones that deserve the “looks” (and in many cases jail time).

But still, I get some mighty odd glares when walking my pit bull. No matter. I’d rather hang out with a pit bull than most people any day. Here’s why:

  1. Pit bulls are smart. They’re darn smart. Heck, my pit bull is even smarter than I am. She ignores commotion around her and…

UNDERWATER RESCUE: The orca ‘Dian’ found entangled in a cray pot line on Monday had help from the rest of the pod which pushed it to the surface to breathe.

September 11th, 2014 (Chris Thompson). A 6 metre orca called Dian had to be rescued about a kilometre east of Kawau Island, Hauraki Gulf, after it got stuck in a cray pot line.

It would not have survived but for the remarkable actions of five orcas, including her own calf, pushing the exhausted and entangled orca to the surface so it could breathe, rescuers say.
