COVID19 is our wake-up call to redefine the human-animal relationship and to put an end to the consumption of animals. In an attempt to prevent another global pandemic originating from animals, China has moved to end not only wildlife consumption but also the dog meat trade by leaving the animals out of the announced draft list of what is considered ‘livestock’. This leaves South Korea, another remaining major dog-eating country, in shame as they have not taken any action to end this practice.

Filthy dog farms where there are no regulations on hygienic practices were the breeding ground for the canine influenza A H3N2 virus first detected in 2007. They remain a ticking bomb for another zoonotic pandemic of epic proportions. Additionally, just recently, the Chinese government has also taken action by recognizing all dogs as ‘companion animals’ as is the international standard.

South Korea is the only country in the world that systematically breeds and raises dogs for meat. In 3 thousand filthy ‘dog farms’ scattered across the country’s countryside, one million dogs are born, raised, and slaughtered every year. Although a few mayors/governors have tried to drive dog slaughter out from cities or major markets, dog meat is being sold everywhere, all year round. The brutal dog meat trade is an ongoing problem in South Korea.

In 2018, when 2 anti-dog meat petitions historically reached over 200,000 signatures by the South Korean people, the government replied that it will “consider revising the related regulations to remove dogs from the country’s list of livestock.” However, no action of any sort has been taken since then.

We hereby urge South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in to remember the government’s declaration in 2018 and announce a road-map to put an end to the dog meat trade. South Korea, the 14th largest economy in the world and one of the most modern countries around the globe must not fall behind. NOW is the time to move in the progressive direction and end the country’s notorious dog meat trade.

Please take action on behalf of the animals by signing and sharing this petition.

Animal Rights Charity Shares Shocking Pictures Of Caged Puppies

An animal rights charity has shared shocking pictures of caged puppies in Korea as they urge people not take part in the tradition of eating the dog soup to cool them down during the hottest days of summer.

The charity, NoToDogMeat, says that some Koreans still maintain their tradition of eating boshintang, a Korean soup that includes dog meat as its primary ingredient.

The dogs used in the soup are typically found from dog farms, stray dogs or are people’s own pets that end up being brutally tortured.

NoToDogMeat is calling on all Koreans to boycott this practice and urge anyone taking part to think again.

Days of Bok (伏)/ Boknals, which mark the beginning, peak and the end of the dog-eating season according to the Chinese calendar, are traditionally in the summer when temperatures are at their hottest. This year the Boknals began on Sunday (19 July) and will end on 8 August.

NoToDogMeat CEO Julia de Cadenet said: “In previous years, our activists witnessed the horrors of Koreans feasting on dogs at the notorious Moran market.

“Dogs often with collars on staring out with pleading eyes and revellers selected them for slaughter. In 2012 we launched a UK Government petition to close this vile market, and in 2017 the mayor of Seoul ordered the dismantling of cages in this market and several others followed suit.

“For us, it signalled a true beginning of change as soon other markets started to close. Of course, dogs are still sold, and gruesome farms and abuse continue, but we saw progress.”

Protests containing their distinctive NoToDogMeat banners were also featured in Australian filmmakers movie The Dog Meat Professionals: South Korea.

In the film we see rows of dogs in cages at a dog farm. An interviewer asks an employee if the dogs are being kept for pets. He replies: “All these dogs are for dog meat soup. They are all raised to be eaten.”

Julia added: “Although Korea has not followed China’s recent move to tentatively declare dogs and cats as companion animals (so no longer livestock), there are many bye-laws in place that activists on the ground and internationally push to be enforced.

“So why aren’t these laws enforced? This is a question activists continue to raise to embassies and government officials, and right now in South Korea, there is a mass e-petition campaign.”

NoToDogMeat are currently supporting, among others, Korean Charity Kara, which organised a drive through protest four days ago with an overwhelmingly positive response.

Julia said her charity will be showing their support by taking to the streets on 23 July (Thursday) at 2-5pm at the South Korean Embassy in London followed by a walk to House of Parliament before they break for summer recess.

Stop Cruel Dog Meat Festival – Animal Petitions

caged-dog-by-dineshraj-goomany-400x265China is undergoing preparations for its Yulin Dog Meat Festival, despite the government “officially” ending the slaughter of dogs in 2016. This is the second year in a row where dogs have been captured and killed in the name of an unethical tradition. Take a stand for animal welfare and demand the immediate cancellation of this festival.

Sign Petition: Togo’s Evala Festival Forces Teenage Boys to Gorge on Dog Meat

thepetitionsite.com

by: Pet Dog Meat Group
recipient: President of Togo Faure Gnassingbé

Each year thousands of teenage boys in Togo, Africa, go into isolation for a full week, to gorge on dog meat for a full seven days. The teenagers then reappear and spend the following week, the first week of July, gorging on even more dog meat, as they compete in ‘traditional initiation’ wrestling competitions known as Evala, in Togo, Africa.

The two week annual ritual is performed by each teenage young man for three years. As the Evala wrestling practice spreads across more locations, so does the mass number of brutal slaughtering of dogs for dog meat, seen as the wrestler’s secret weapon for success.

Each competitor desires the attributes which dogs posses: loyalty, courage, intelligence, endurance, cunning, faithfulness and so on. It is falsely believed eating dog meat will transfer the dog’s attributes to the consumer, giving the consumer supernatural powers over their opponent. Dogs are eaten because they are considered to be cunning, enduring, courageous, smart and faithful. These are qualities required for wrestlers to defeat their opponents during the fights.

The number of dogs slaughtered for the Evala festival each year is unknown. We do know thousands of young men from numerous different tribes compete against each other, so the number of dogs killed would be staggering.

The young Kabye man does not become a fully fledged member of his community unless he completes the three year initiation ritual. To refuse participation in initiation ceremonies means being driven out by your family, elders and the entire community at large.

Rabies is a serious problem across Africa and while we do not know how many people have died of rabies in connection to Evala, we do know the dogs are not health checked prior to slaughter or consumption. Togolese people falsely believe rabies can be cured by grinding up a dog’s head and placing it in the wound.

Fight Dog Meat is calling for the Evala festival to ban the slaughter of dogs and consumption of dog meat, and embrace the window of opportunity to become a professional event, guaranteeing the survival of the wrestling performance of athleticism.

Rabies is a serious problem in Togo and the Evala festival is placing local people and tourists in jeopardy by continuing to slaughter and consume dogs and cats which receive no health checks. The slaughtering and eating of dogs and cats in Togo must be done away with and banned.

The Evala initiation ceremony is gaining larger numbers of international tourists each July, as spectators marvel at the wrestlers performance. The mass killing of dogs and gorging on dog meat by teenage competitors a week prior to the festival, followed by a second week of eating dog meat, has been relatively unknown up until now.

As news of thousands of young men gorging on dog meat for two weeks, prior and during the festival, public outrage will overcome many people who may otherwise have visited your event, as tourists. Similarly, seeing teenage wrestlers smeared in the fat of freshly slaughtered dogs, to make their skin slippery in an effort to avoid competitors from holding them, will also cause outrage on the public stage.

Togo is playing Russian roulette with people’s lives by continuing to slaughter and consume dogs which receives no health checks prior to slaughter or consumption. It is a false belief to say that grinding up the head of a dog and placing it in the wound will cure rabies. It will not cure rabies!

Fight Dog Meat is calling for the Evala festival to ban the slaughter of dogs and consumption of dog meat, and embrace the window of opportunity to become a professional event, guaranteeing the survival of the wrestling performance of athleticism.

The slaughtering and eating of dogs and cats in Togo must be done away with and banned.

One of South Korea’s Largest Dog Meat Markets is Closed Down

dailymail.co.uk

Gupo dog meat market in Busan, South Korea is one of the largest in the country
It serves chilled canine flesh and it keeps live dogs in cages available on order
The area of the dog market will now be turned into a public park by city officials

A notorious dog meat market that serves chilled canine flesh and keeps live animals in cages to slaughter on order is being closed down.

The Gupo dog meat market in Busan, South Korea is one of the largest in the country.

Now, local authorities have reached an agreement with all 19 dog meat sellers at Gupo Livestock Market to shut down their businesses next month.

The agreement is part of an urban planning project to regenerate the area and turn the market into a public park.

The chilled meat on display at the Gupo dog meat market in Busan, South Korea. The market is now being closed

The closure of Gupo is the latest in a series of crack downs by officials on the dog meat trade.

In November last year, Seongnam city demolished Taepyeong, the country’s largest dog slaughterhouse, and closed down most of its related dog meat vendors.

Earlier this year, Seoul mayor, Park Won-soon, vowed to close all dog butcheries in South Korea’s capital city after watching an animated about abandoned dogs.

Nara Kim, dog meat campaigner for Humane Society International said: ‘We very much welcome the agreement reached to close Gupo market, home to one of the largest dog meat markets in South Korea.

‘The closure plan is the result of months of hard work between the local authorities and the market vendors, and both sides are to be commended for working towards this goal that will not only bring to an end to Gupo’s dog meat era, but will also see the area regenerated with new amenities and businesses for the benefit of the local, modern economy.

‘HSI has been working with dog meat farmers in South Korea for nearly four years helping them close their flagging businesses as more people in the county turn away from dog meat, so the closure of Gupo’s grimly iconic dog market, which follows the demolition last year of the country’s largest dog slaughterhouse complex, is a sign of more compassionate times.

‘This is the latest crack down on an increasingly unpopular dog meat trade, and we hope that it inspires further closures in future where dogs also suffer for the meat trade, such as Chilsung market in Daegu.’

Close to 2 million dogs a year are reared on thousands of dog meat farms across South Korea, the only country known to farm dogs for human consumption.

All across Asia, an estimated 30 million dogs are killed and eaten each year, mainly stolen pets and street dogs.

The dogs live their whole lives on dog farms before being slaughtered.

Death by electrocution is most common, with dogs usually taking up to five minutes to die.

There have even been instances of dogs taking up to 20 minutes to die and hanging is also practiced. The animals are killed in full view of other dogs.

Most people in the country don’t regularly eat dog but it remains popular during July and August, when it is eaten as a soup called bosintang.

The closure of Gupo is the latest in a series of crack downs by officials on the dog meat trade. Some believe that the soup improves stamina and virility.

A South Korean court ruled last June that killing dogs for meat is illegal, in a landmark decision which animal rights activists said could pave the way to outlawing eating canines.

The meat has long been a part of South Korean cuisine, with about one million dogs eaten a year.

Consumption has declined in South Korea with the practice now something of a taboo among younger generations and pressure from activists mounting.

A survey in 2017 found that 70 per cent of South Koreans do not eat dogs, but only about 40 per cent believe the practice should be banned.

Sign This Important Petition That Barbaric Yulin Dog Meat Festival Must Come to an End Once and For All

change.org

The Yulin Dog Meat Festival is fast approaching. We must put pressure on Chinese officials to enact effective changes in procedure and law enforcement to stop this horrific event from taking place once and for all.

The United States’ position on the dog and cat meat trade, and the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in particular, is clear and unequivocal: dogs and cats should not be killed for the consumption of their meat. In December 2018, the United States banned the dog and cat meat trade. Inroads into the banning of this cruel and senseless commerce have also been made in parts Asia.

Taiwan recently took the monumental step of banning both the consumption of dog and cat meat and the overall trade in such meat. Significantly, Taiwan is also home to an international alliance that is championing the push to ensure all Asian countries outlaw these senseless and cruel practices in the region. Indeed, Hanoi, Vietnam is also taking action, progressively banning the trade of dog and cat meat in its central districts.

Although these measures and efforts are important, we must continue to press China to stop the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. We proudly stand with the millions of people across the globe and in China, who wish to see this festival come to an end. The Chinese government would be wise to join our efforts and institute a complete ban of the dog and cat meat trade.

The Dog Meat Festival in Yulin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China dates back to 2009-2010, when it was launched by dog meat traders as a commercial enterprise to boost flagging sales. We find it completely outrageous that even though the Yulin city government withdrew as a sponsor of the Dog Meat Festival, Yulin authorities and the Chinese government failed to take any meaningful action to bring an end to this festival. The event celebrates the wholesale torture of dogs and is an abhorrent display of animal cruelty.

During this barbaric festival, dogs are burnt, skinned, or boiled alive, have their paws cleaved off while conscious, and are staked to the ground and beaten to death. No one can see these images and walk away unaffected. Based on the work of animal activist groups, the number of dogs slaughtered at the festival has be reduced, but still far too many are suffering barbaric torture and death. In fact, even with the decrease of dogs slaughtered at the Yulin festival, there are still about 10 million dogs killed annually in China for the dog meat trade. It is absolutely shameful that this festival and others like it still continue.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank the countless activists who continue their tireless fight every single day in order to save and protect the voiceless and powerless animals across the globe. The Vanderpump Dog Foundation is on the ground 365 days a year with our two shelters and almost 500 dogs saved from the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. We see first hand the progress and are hopeful that we will be able to end the celebration of consuming our best friends. We must continue to shed light on the horrific treatment of the many animals that fall prey to China’s dog meat trade.

Our efforts transcend cultural differences, party lines, state borders, and political stances. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or a Democrat, this cause must be everyone’s cause. With the might of the American government behind us, we can continue to put pressure on Chinese officials to enact much needed changes. Many humane courses of action are already available throughout China. With regular monitoring and enforcement, we hope that one day soon will finally see the elimination of the cruel Yulin Dog Meat Festival.

Petition: Stop the Yulin Festival

change.org
Vickie May started this petition to Chinese Government and 1 other

Every year around this time people gather in Yulin, a city in China, to celebrate the Yulin festival. What is the Yulin festival? It’s a “festival” held in Yulin where people kidnap pet dogs and strays and shove them into crates a few days before the actual festival starts. Then when the festival starts they beat them to death, boil them alive, skin them alive, bend their limbs back till they snap, electrocute them till they can’t move and leave them to die, hack their snouts off with hooks and even set them on fire alive. They do a lot more than this FOR FUN. They don’t use the fur they skin or the meat. They do this for leisure and each year 10-15 thousand dogs are tourted and killed because of this festival.20 million dogs are killed in China each year

Dogs are consumed in China yes, and some would say that’s wrong too, but I want to focus on the fact that these dogs are put through hours of torturous pain and then eventually killed. They don’t use the meat and they don’t gain anything but pleasure from the festival. So please sign and help us bring the festival to an end!

59,471 SUPPORTERS – 60,000 GOAL

A high-level source inside the Eygptian Ministry of Agriculture revealed that The General Organization for Veterinary Services has approved of the export of 4,100 dogs and cats to Asia.

It is unclear what exactly will happen to these poor creatures except for sure abhorrent torture and suffering. If they are to be ‘officially’ used for food or fur by the Chinese, then this is clear violation of all health controls and a matter that needs to be addressed by the OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health).

For years, this organisation has refused to back our Charity’s concerns that dogs and cats are being brutally slaughtered for food. These animals are not livestock, and they and other organisations know full well that we oppose eating dogs and cats (and indeed any meat). Turning a blind eye condones the torture.

Even if the dogs and cats are to be used for medical testing, we have proven how much they are made to suffer. Funds that Eygpt is using to prepare the dogs to travel would be better used to run spay and neuter programmes and support local shelters that promote kindness to animals.

Our Charity formally opposes this export, and in our capacity of Consultative Status to the ECOSOC of the UN, we will circulate our concerns and objections.

Sign this petition to demand that Egypt stop sending dogs to Egypt.

Please follow our social media where we will publish actions you can take part in to oppose this madness.

We await official statements from the Ministries to confirm their position.

Breaking! South Korea Closes Its Largest Dog Meat Slaughterhouse, Taepyeong; Much More Needs To Be Done To End The Horrific Dog Meat Trade – World Animal News

A dog is shown locked in a cage at a dog meat farm in Namyangju, South Korea, on Monday, May 7, 2018. The operation is part of HSIs efforts to fight the dog meat trade throughout Asia. In South Korea, the campaign includes working to raise awareness among Koreans about the plight of meat dogs being no different from the animals more and more of them are keeping as pets.

November 26, 2018

Taepyeong, the largest dog slaughterhouse in South Korea has been shut down by local authorities, bringing the country one step closer to ending its brutal dog meat trade.
As per Humane Society International (HSI), Seongnam city council intends to build a community park on the land, creating a vibrant public space where once hundreds of thousands of dogs were slaughtered for human consumption.
Sadly, as per an update on the Korea Animal Rights Advocates Facebook page yesterday, a delay by Seongnam-si resulted in the slaughterhouse owner having time to transfer the dogs to another location.
“We could not ‘rescue’ the dogs this time. However, it is important for dog farm owners to show the downfall of the largest dog slaughterhouse, to show the change of the largest traditional dog market, and to drive their compliance,” the organization noted in the post. “In doing so, we must reduce the number of dog farms and dog slaughterhouses that we need to shut down. Also, we must do more to pass the dog slaughter ban.”
Taepyeong is comprised of six individual slaughterhouses, five of which will be bulldozed immediately. Permission to destroy the sixth building was not secured in time for the closure, however, all of its cages will be destroyed and equipment removed so that it is no longer operational.

“Both as a Korean citizen and an animal campaigner, it was incredibly moving for me to be a part of the historic closure of this notorious dog slaughterhouse,” stated HSI Korea’s Nara Kim in a statement. ” This really feels like a landmark moment in the demise of the dog meat industry in South Korea, and sends the clear message that the dog meat industry is increasingly unwelcome in Korean society.”
The closure of Taepyeong comes at a time when dog meat consumption is declining rapidly in South Korea, particularly among younger generations. A survey by Gallup Korea conducted in June 2018 claims that 70% of South Koreans state that they will not eat dog meat in the future, and recent moves to curb the dog meat trade reflect a society increasingly ill at ease with the industry. Most recently, last September, a Supreme Court struck down a lower court decision to allow dog electrocution.
“We have been making constant efforts to shut down the Taepyeong-dong dog slaughterhouse through investigations and putting pressure on Gyeonggi province and Seongnam-si. As Korea’s biggest, brutal, illegal dog slaughterhouse, Taepyeong-dong is notorious for supplying huge amounts of dog bodies to nearby Seongnam Moran traditional market. Its closure is a historical event, and hopefully may trigger the closure of other illegal dog slaughterhouses throughout the country,” said Hyunji Kim of Korea Animal Rights Advocates. “Until we achieve this, we really appreciate the support of both Korean people and global citizens who love animals for helping our campaigns to completely end dog meat in Korea.”
Korea Animal Rights Advocates recently teamed up with HSI International to present a petition of nearly one million signatures to the President’s Blue House, calling for an END to the dog meat trade!

171 Dogs Rescued As Chinese Police Raid Illegal Dog Meat Slaughterhouse That Includes Stolen Pets – World Animal News

cageddog11579051909.jpg

By WAN –
November 13, 2018

As one lady searched for her lost canine companion, she had no idea she would end up saving nearly 200 stolen dogs from the dog meat trade.
On Sunday, November 4th, police in Chengdu, China, raided an illegal dog meat slaughterhouse and sent all 171 dogs to the Sichuan Qiming Small Animal Protection Center for health checks and rehab.
Many of the rescued dogs are clearly stolen pets. Steps will now be taken to re-unite them with their guardians and find them forever homes.
On arrival to the slaughterhouse, police found piles of dead dogs stacked high in a refrigerated room. The slaughterhouse was unable to produce a permit for their sickening activities, five workers were arrested.
Animals Asia has been assisting Qiming as they tackle the huge task of caring for 171 newly rescued dogs, by providing vaccinations, testing kits for infectious diseases, and three tonnes of dog food.
Animals Asia Cat and Dog Welfare Director, Irene Feng said in a statement, “the swift and tough crackdown by the Chengdu police sends a strong message to dog thieves and illegal butchers that they are not above the law. Their cruel trade is breaking hearts as they steal deeply loved companion animals, and their complete lack of regard for laws and hygiene make them a serious threat to wider public health.”

cageddog21403542861.jpg

The media has reported that the illegal slaughterhouse was discovered as a local woman searched for her lost Belgian Malinois.
Mrs. Peng traveled to Jianyang City and was told of a slaughterhouse in Kuixing Village. When she entered the slaughterhouse, her dog immediately recognized her.
Although she was afraid to tell the workers that this was her stolen companion, Mrs. Peng tried to negotiate to buy the dog back, but after leaving to make a phone call to her husband, she returned to find that her dog had been killed.
She filmed the scene and contacted local police, which led to the raid and eventual rescue of 171 dogs.
Animals Asia Founder and CEO, Jill Robinson MBE said, “images from the scene of this slaughterhouse are absolutely horrific and have pulled back the curtain on this brutal trade for many people. It is heartening to see the public, the authorities, and local charities all working together to stamp out this cruel industry and do what is right for the animals.”
“This rescue wouldn’t have been possible without authorities taking the issue seriously and being willing to collaborate with partners in the charity sector. Similarly, without the local charities, there would be nowhere to send the surviving dogs, and without an animal loving public like Mrs. Peng, the shadowy slaughterhouse could have got away with their illegal activities for many more years.”

Last month, police in Chengdu’s Xindu district uncovered meat traders holding 120 dogs without proof of origin.
All 120 animals were rescued and sent to Sichuan Qiming Small Animal Protection Center where they will be cared for while the legal case against the suspects continues. With the animals considered “evidence” in the case, they cannot be re-homed, but they can be returned to their original guardians.
“This incident shows how much progress has been made in terms of collaboration and the increased seriousness with which the authorities are treating dog meat trade related crime. But more needs to be done,” said Irene.
“We’ll continue to work with our partners in government and to encourage them to strengthen supervision and law enforcement in each stage of the industry supply chain, including stronger penalties for stealing and poisoning dogs, cracking down on the illegal slaughter and trade of dogs, and stopping the continued the illicit trafficking of dogs.“
The number of animal welfare organizations in China has increased in the last decade. In 2006, there were just 30 domestic welfare groups, while today more than 200 are working to help animals in need.
Animals Asia currently funds and mentors an astonishing 60% of all China’s local animal welfare organizations.
The charity also works with authorities across the country encouraging local governments to work with animal welfare groups to develop advanced, humane, science-based policies, governing legal guardians and departments in charge of stray populations.
To date, more than 523 officials from 51 cities across the country have attended Animals Asia’s Dog Ownership Management Symposium – covering every single principality in China, and 65% of all provincial capitals.
Qiming has attended five of Animals Asia’s Dog Ownership Management Symposiums, and the two organizations have a long history of collaboration going back a decade.
The two groups have worked together to care for animals after earthquakes in 2008 and 2013, while Animals Asia has donated materials such as vaccines and food on numerous occasions over the past 10 years, as well as providing funding to improve Qiming’s shelter infrastructure.

Breaking! Central Indonesia Is One Step Closer To Banning The Horrific Dog & Cat Meat Trade – World Animal News

By Lauren Lewis –
October 9, 2018

It’s a remarkable day for animal advocates worldwide as progress is being made in the fight to end the horrific dog and cat meat trade in Indonesia, beginning with Central Indonesian provinces.
“We are excited to announce that the Indonesian Central government issued an official letter to all provincial governments ordering them to take immediate action against the dog and cat meat trade,” Four Paws International shared on its Facebook page this morning. “We applaud the government for demanding immediate action to be taken, but won’t stop campaigning until we see an end to the brutal theft, slaughter, and sale of cats and dogs for meat!”
As reported by WAN in the beginning of August, the Indonesian Central government made the decision during the National Coordination of Animal Welfare meeting in Jakarta. As noted by Dog Meat Free Indonesia (DMFI) at the time, at the end of the conference, all necessary participants agreed to issue a ban on the trade of dog and cat meat and to prohibit the issuance of health certification for dog and cat meat for human consumption.

The coalition, which is comprised of local and international groups including Animal Friends Jogja, Jakarta Animal Aid Network, Change For Animals Foundation, Humane Society International, and Four Paws, have exposed the suffering of the dog and cat meat trade through shocking nationwide investigations where innocent animals were filmed being bludgeoned to death and blowtorched alive, as well as exposed the routine theft of pet dogs and the rabies risk the trade poses to locals and tourists alike.
In January, the DMFI coalition also coordinated a letter to President Joko Widodo calling for urgent action and signed by over 90 national and international celebrities including Cameron Diaz, Chelsea Islan, Dame Jane Goodall, Sophia Latjuba, Simon Cowell, and Ellen DeGeneres. DMFI’s global petition has also been signed by over 930,000 people from around the world.

THE TIME HAS COME ! – We -Those signing this petition (Worldwide Community & USA citizens) request that Paul Ryan (Speaker ) and Rep. Kevin McCarthy bring the Bipartisan Resolution 401 introduced by Congressman Alcee L. Hastings and Congressman Vern Buchanan on 22nd June 2017 ‘Urging China, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, India, and all nations to outlaw the dog and cat meat trade and to enforce existing laws against the trade’ to the floor, without delay. We also urge the full support of all USA House Representatives.

STOP THE TORTURE – STOP THIS EVIL & BARBARIC TRADE WORLDWIDE !

An estimated 30 MILLION dogs and cats are abused, tortured and barbarically slaughtered at the hands of The Vile Dog & Cat Meat Trade. Time to stop boiling alive, burning alive, skinning alive, chopping off limbs often through intentional, repeat torture sessions – Just to make the meat taste better!

Learn more about The Vile trade here: http://www.stopthedogandcatmeattradeworldwide.com/facts-about-the-trade.html

Methods of Animal Torture

In The Dog and Cat Meat Trade, dogs and cats are systematically tortured and abused for extended periods in the following ways, even by children as young as 6 or 7 years old. Animals are typically bound, with limbs tied together and mouths taped, wired or tied shut to make the torture easy for the torturer.
Blow-torched alive. Blow-torching does not necessarily cause the animal death. It can last for several hours or even days, occurring in intervals that leave the animal suffering accumulated burns until it finally dies.
Boiled alive. In a large metal pot or cauldron, it can take up to 30 minutes for the animal to die.
Burned alive. In fire pits and open ovens, live animals are speared, held by instruments, such as metal prongs and sticks, and jammed into open fire, where they may take 30 minutes or longer to die.
Stabbed. Animals are repeatedly stabbed and cut, which may take up to two days, if turned into a prolonged torture death.

Excuses for Animal Torture

People engaging in The Trade torture the animals for several, irrational reasons and excuses:
They think the meat tastes better.
They believe the myth that the meat will give them strength, improved health or sexual vigour, such as an enlarged penis. Science supports none of these myths.
They think the animal cannot feel pain or is worthless, aside from being meat. Therefore they think it is ok to torture and abuse the body of the animal, even though the animal screams and struggles to escape.

Facts about Dog and Cat Meat

Dog and Cat Meat sourced and prepared using the methods common in The Dog and Cat Meat Trade is commonly dangerous for human consumption, for the following reasons:
The meat, especially in China, is from stolen family pets.
The farming, slaughter and preparation of the meat are unregulated.
The farming, slaughter and preparation of the meat are often highly unsanitary and prone to infection, due to the lack of government regulation.
Consumption of the meat contributes to Rectal Cancer, more commonly known as cancer of the anus.
Consumption of the meat can cause a wide range of serious diseases in humans linked to conditions that the poor tortured dog or cat was carrying or being kept in prior to being consumed. Eg Rabies etc.

While most Westerners view dogs and cats strictly as companion or working animals and find the practice of raising and slaughtering dogs and cats for food strange and unsettling, a large number of people in South Korea as well as in China, Vietnam, the Philippines and many other countries regularly consume dog and cat meat. Extreme cruelty which occurs most of the time cannot be dismissed as merely a matter of cultural norms. The sad fact is that in many places where dog and cat meat is consumed, the dogs and cats raised for food commonly endure a lifetime of abuse and often are slaughtered in a manner that is nightmarish in its brutality and many dogs and cats are indeed stolen pets!

Countries that eat dog meat

Fourteen countries around the globe still eat dog meat. They are : Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Polynesia, Switzerland, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Artic and Antartic.

Cambodia: Eating dog meat is legal in Cambodia and its usually washed down with Anchor beer.

China: Although the Chinese were the first to domesticate the dog and keep them as pets, dog meat has been a source of food from at least the time of Confucius, and possibly even before.

Indonesia: Eating dog meat is usually associated with people from the Batak Toba culture, who cook a traditional dish named saksang that is like a dog-meat stew. Meat for sales: Market traders with live ducks that will be for the pot.

Mexico: Dogs were historically bred for their meat by the Aztecs. These dogs were called itzcuintlis, and were often pictured on pre-Comumbian Mexican pottery.

Phillippines: In the capital city of Manila, the law specifically prohibits the killing and selling of dogs for food except in certain circumstances including research and animal population control.

Polynesia: Dogs were historically eaten in Tahiti and other islands of Polynesia at the time of first European contact in 1769.

Taiwan: Dog meat in Taiwan is particularly eaten in winter months, especially black dogs, which is believed to help retain body warmth.

Korea: Gaegogi literally means ‘dog meat’ in Korean. Gaegogi, however, is often mistaken as the term for Korean soup made from dog meat, bosintang. The distaste felt by dog lovers, particularly from the West, has made this dish very controversial.

Switzerland: According to a Swiss newspaper report in 1996, the Swiss rural cantons of Appenzell and St. Gallen are known to have had a tradition of eating dogs, curing dog meat into jerky and sausages, as well as using the lard for medicinal purposes.

Vietnam: Dog meat is eaten throughout Vietnam. To many Northerners, it is a popular, if relatively expensive, dinner time restaurant meal.

Artic and Antarctic: Dogs have historically been an emergency food source for various peoples in Siberia, Alaska, northern Canada and Greenland. Sled dogs are usually used for pulling sleds, but occasionally are eaten when no other food is available.

Countries that eat cat meat

Cat meat is meat prepared from domestic cats for human consumption. Some countries eat cat meat regularly, whilst others have only consumed cat meat in desperation during wartime or poverty.
Africa
In some cultures of Cameroon here is a special ceremony featuring cat-eating that is thought to bring good luck.
Asia China In Guangdong and Guangxi provinces in south-eastern China some—especially older—people consider cat flesh a good warming food during winter months. However, in Northern China eating cat is considered unacceptable. It is estimated that around 4 million cats are eaten in China each year, and that the number is rising. However, overseas visitors are unlikely to come across downtown restaurants serving cat, which is only common out of town and in the city outskirts.
The cat’s stomach and intestines may be eaten, as well as meat from the thighs, which are turned into meatballs served with, soup with the head and the rest of the animal then thrown away. In Guangdong, cat meat is a main ingredient in the traditional dish “dragon, tiger, phoenix” (snake, cat, chicken), which is said to fortify the body.
Organized cat-collectors supply the southern restaurants with animals that often originate in Anhul and Jiangsu provinces. On 26 January 2010 China launched its first draft proposal to protect the country’s animals from maltreatment including a measure to jail people, for periods up to 15 days, for eating cat or dog meat.

With the increase of cats as pets in China, opposition towards the traditional use of cats for food has grown. In June 2006, approximately 40 activists stormed the Fangji Cat Meatball Restaurant in Shenzhen forcing it to shut down. Expanded to more than 40 member societies, the Chinese Animal Protection Network in January 2006 began organizing well-publicized protests against dog and cat consumption, starting in Guangzhou, following up in more than ten other cities “with very optimal response from public.”
Japan, In Japan, cat meat was consumed until the end of Tokugawa period in the 19th century. Okinawans once ate a cat soup called Mayaa no Ushiru

In Korea cat meat was historically brewed into a tonic as a folk remedy for neuralgia and arthritis. Modern consumption is more likely to be as cat soup.
Vietnam Cat meat is eaten in Vietnam.
Europe In Switzerland the private consumption and slaughter of dog and cat meat is permitted though its commercial trade is prohibited by law. A 1993 petition to ban consumption failed with the government declaring the matter a “personal ethical choice.” In June 2008, three students at the Danish School of Media and Journalism published pictures of a cat being slaughtered in Citat, a magazine for journalism students. Their goal was to create a debate about animal welfare. The cat was shot by its owner, a farmer and it would have been put down in any case. The farmer slaughtered the cat all within the limits of Danish law. This led to criticism from Danish animal welfare group Dyrenes Beskyttelse, and death threats received by the students.
In February 2010, on a television cooking show, the Italian food writer Beppe Bigazzi mentioned that during the famine in World War II cat stew was a “succulent” and well known dish in his home area of Valdarno, Tuscany. Later he claimed he had been joking, but added that cats used to be eaten in the area during famine periods, historically; he was widely criticised in the media for his comments and ultimately dropped from the television network.
Cats were sometimes eaten as a famine food during harsh winters, poor harvests, and wartime. Cat gained notoriety as “roof rabbit” in Central Europe’s hard times during and between World War I and World War II
In 18th-century Britain, there are a few records of cats eaten as a form of entertainment.
North America In the United States it is legal in forty-four states for an individual to kill cats for food.
Oceania Indigenous Australians in the area of Alice Springs roast feral cats on an open fire. They have also developed recipes for cat stew. Some other inhabitants of the area have also taken up this custom, justified on the grounds that felines are “a serious threat to Australia’s native “fauna”. Scientists warned that eating wild cats could expose humans to harmful bacteria and toxins.
South America Cat is not a regular menu item in Peru but is used in such dishes as fricassee and stews most abundant in two specific sites in the country: the southern town of Chincha Alta (Ice Region, Afro-Peruvian mostly) and the north-central Andean town of Huari (Ancash Region). Primarily used by Afro-Peruvians. Cat cooking techniques are demonstrated every September during the festival of Saint Efigenia in a town of La Quebrada.
In October 2013, a judge banned the annual La Festival Gastronomico del Gato (the Gastronomic Festival of the Cat), which was held every September in La Quebrada to commemorate the arrival of settlers who were forced to eat cats to survive, citing it as cruel to the 100+ cats specifically bred for the event, which involves being kept in cages for a year prior the Festival. The judge also cited concerns over the safety of the meat, which drew criticism from residents who contend that cat meat is far richer than rabbit or duck, and that it has been long consumed globally without any deleterious effects.
That same month, magistrate Maria Luyo banned the festival of Curruñao in the small town of San Luis. Locals say that the festival, which sees cats being drowned, skinned and tied to fireworks and blown up, dates back to the practice of eating cat on the part of African slaves who worked on sugar-cane plantations in colonial times, and is part of the religious celebrations of Santa Efigenia, an African-Peruvian folk saint. Luyo stated in her ruling that the festival “fomented violence based on cruel acts against animals which caused grave social damage and damaged public health”, and that minors could be “psychologically damaged” by watching the events.
In a 1996, report some citizens in a shanty town in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina, stated that, during an economic crisis, they had to feed the neighbourhood children with cat’s meat, and commenting, “It’s not denigrating to eat cat, it keeps a child’s stomach full”. The validity of this report has been questioned, however.

Breaking! Animal Welfare Coalition Revels In Milestone Moment As Indonesian Government Agrees To Ban Barbaric Dog & Cat Meat Trade – World Animal News

By Lauren Lewis –

Photos from Dog Meat Free Indonesia
With an estimated 1,200 dogs being slaughtered and consumed every day by people in Surakarta, Central Java, it is especially positive news that the Indonesian government has finally agreed to ban the dog and cat meat trade. The landmark decision was made during the “National Coordination of Animal Welfare” which took place in Jakarta at the beginning of the month.
Dog Meat Free Indonesia (DMFI), which had a coalition in attendance, explained that the major breakthrough came when at the close of the meeting, all national participants agreed to issue a ban on the trade of dog and cat meat in Indonesia and to prohibit the issuance of health certification for dog and cat meat for human consumption.
The DMFI coalition, comprised of Animal Friends Jogja, Jakarta Animal Aid Network, Change For Animals Foundation, Humane Society International and Four Paws, has long exposed the suffering of the dog and cat meat trade through shocking nationwide investigations in which animals were filmed being bludgeoned to death and blowtorched alive. The group has also revealed the routine theft of pet dogs and the rabies risk the trade poses to locals and tourists alike.

This agreement comes just days after campaigners from the Dog Meat Free Indonesia coalition issued a public warning that millions of global tourists could be at risk of exposure to the deadly rabies virus spread by the county’s illegal dog and cat meat trade, and just two weeks before the country hosts the 18th Asian Games, when some three million tourists are expected to visit the capital city of Jakarta.
In January, the DMFI also coordinated a letter to President Joko Widodo calling for urgent action that was signed by over 90 national and international celebrities including: Cameron Diaz, Chelsea Islan, Dame Jane Goodall, Sophia Latjuba, Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres. DMFI’s global petition has also been signed by over 930,000 people from around the world.
“The extreme cruelty of Indonesia’s dog and cat meat trades is intolerable under both Indonesia and international animal welfare standards, and the government is right to be concerned about the impacts of these trades on its international reputation. With our growing awareness of animal sentience comes a greater responsibility to protect animals from cruelty,” Lola Webber, Director of Change For Animals Foundation said in a statement. “Customs evolve, and the nationwide movement from within Indonesia calling for an end to these trades is proof that Indonesia is ready to banish the dog meat trade to the history books of shame and illegality.”
“The dog and cat meat trade is utterly brutal, a risk to human health and largely fuelled by crime, so we applaud the Indonesian government for pledging to end the trade following our DMFI investigations,” noted Kitty Block, President of Humane Society International. “We hope that this bold step will send a strong message to other countries across Asia, such as China, South Korea, India and Vietnam, where 30 million dogs and 10 million cats suffer unimaginable cruelty for the meat trade, many of them stolen pets. We stand ready to work with the Indonesian authorities to implement a robust ban, end the slaughter, and bring us one step closer to shutting down these dreadful trades for good.”
The results of this national meeting will be used as a recommendation for the Ministry of Agriculture to formulate a PERMENTAN (Minister of Agriculture regulations) regarding the ban on trade in dog and cat meat, and that of exotic animals in Indonesia.

Breaking! The South Korean Ministry Establishes First-Ever Pet-Related Animal Welfare Policy Division As Nearly 6 Million Homes Have Pets – World Animal News

Breaking! The South Korean Ministry Establishes First-Ever Pet-Related Animal Welfare Policy Division As Nearly 6 Million Homes Have Pets
By WAN –
June 7, 2018

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in South Korea announced yesterday that it is establishing an animal welfare policy division for pets, under its livestock policy bureau. Issues such as these were previously assigned to a team under the livestock environment and welfare division.
The new division, formed to accommodate the growing number of homes in Korea with pets, will serve as a much-needed separate department that is tasked with taking charge of pet-related affairs and policies.
“The animal welfare policy division will tackle major assignments such as: preventing animal-related accidents and protecting animals from being abandoned or mistreated, as well as enhancing the ethical guidelines for animal testing, an official from the Agriculture Ministry noted in a statement. “We think this new division will be one of the busiest departments in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.”
As per the Korea Joongang Daily, the ministry issued the news along with some staggering statistics.
According to the government, the number of households in the country that own a pet has increased by more than 20% in just two years from 4.57 million in 2015 to 5.93 million in 2017.
The number of laboratory animals sadly also increased 18% from 2.51 million, to 3.08 million, while the number of farm animals grew by approximately 1,000 during the same time period.
While the establishment of a department solely dedicated to pet-related issues and policies in Korea is a positive step, the complicated country still has a long way to go when it comes to protecting its dogs.
Horrifically, dogs are still being slaughtered for their meat. There are more than 17,000 dog meat farms across the country.
In South Korea, Soi Dog is working with senior government officials to enact stronger animal welfare laws with the ultimate aim of banning the dog meat industry.
As per its website, this has already led to a ban on the slaughter of dogs at Moran Market, the biggest dog meat market in the capital, Seoul.
Thailand-based Soi Dog, and numerous other animal welfare organizations from around the world, such as, Southern California-based Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation, continue to challenge Asia’s understanding of the barbaric dog meat industry, while making people aware about the massive and unnecessary cruelty involved.

WAN prays that Korea, and many other countries worldwide continue to take monumental steps to protect our precious species!

Petition: End The Yulin Dog Meat Festival For Good! – The Animal Rescue Site

End The Yulin Dog Meat Festival For Good!
Force one crucial step from Congress in order to end this cruel and barbaric festival!

A new ban on selling dog meat at restaurants, street vendors and markets at China’s Yulin dog meat festival will go into effect on June 15, just one week before the festival is set to start. What remains unclear is if the ban is temporary or if officials will be able to enforce the ban. Sign now to show your support for a permanent end to the Yulin Dog Meat Festival!
[End The Yulin Dog Meat Festival For Good!]
Goal: 45,000 • Progress: 27,Sponsored by: The Animal Rescue Site

For more than twenty years, summer in Yulin, China has meant the slaughter of tens of thousands of dogs in the most disgusting and brutal ways imaginable. They are stolen from the streets — even from people’s homes — and then crammed into such small cages that many dogs die before even arriving in Yulin. Those that make it face being beaten to death, boiled alive, and tortured for days.

Thankfully, there are steps being taken by lawmakers in the United States to end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival.

The bill being proposed, HR 30 of the 115th Congress, would officially condemn the festival as a “spectacle of extreme animal cruelty,” while also recognizing the public health risk the festival presents. Currently, HR 30 is being reviewed by Members of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific.

Sign below to tell Congress to sign HR 30 into law, and help put an end to this cruel and barbaric festival!
