China Approves New Non-Animal Cosmetics Tests After PETA Push

After years of pushing from PETA, the Chinese government has approved two more non-animal methods for testing cosmetics products in China.

The two newly approved tests, the direct peptide reaction assay for skin sensitization and the short time exposure assay for eye irritation, will spare countless animals the agony of having substances dripped into their eyes and rubbed onto their skin.

This major progress is thanks to the groundbreaking work of the expert scientists and regulatory specialists at the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), with whom PETA provided initial funding to train Chinese scientists and educate officials in modern non-animal methods.
No animal should be poisoned or blinded for a consumer product—or any other reason.

In 2012, PETA exposed the fact that some formerly cruelty-free companies had quietly started paying the Chinese government to test their products on animals in order to sell them in that country. At the time, animal tests were required for any cosmetics sold in China. PETA immediately contacted the leading experts in the field of non-animal test methods at IIVS and provided them with the initial grant to launch their work in China.

IIVS scientists successfully worked with Chinese officials to approve the first non-animal test method, the 3T3 neutral red uptake phototoxicity assay, which is used to test cosmetics for their potential toxicity when they come into contact with sunlight.

In 2014, the Chinese government announced that it would accept the results from non-animal test methods but only for non–special use cosmetics manufactured in China. Tests on animals are still required for all imported cosmetics and all special-use cosmetics, regardless of where they were manufactured.

Procter & Gamble Launches Eco-Friendly Plant-Based Cleaning Product Line!

Procter & Gamble recently joined the Humane Society’s #BeCrueltyFree campaign, and began by making their Herbal Essences brand certified cruelty-free. They also seem to be moving in a more natural and eco-friendly direction with their new brand, Home Made Simple. The new lifestyle brand is plant-based and all the bottles are recyclable.

The new product line includes hand soap, dish soap, multipurpose cleaner, laundry detergent and fabric softener. Up to 95 percent of the formulas contain plant-derived ingredients and they’re all free of gluten, parabens, phthalates, phosphates, and dyes.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s actually a television show on Oprah’s OWN network. The concept came from a Procter & Gamble newsletter 15 years ago. Host of the show, Laila Ali says: “I am excited to continue my partnership with Home Made Simple as they expand into offering consumers a line of naturally inspired, plant-based cleaning products. As the host of Home Made Simple’s TV show, I meet a lot of families across the country that want products in their home that they can trust and, as a mom, I feel the same way. Home Made Simple has created this line for people just like us who are looking for an effective clean they can feel good about.”

The products are available in three scents: Rosemary, Lavender and Lemon, and since they use natural ingredients, they’re also gentle on skin. However, the line also has environmental benefits. All the Home Made Simple bottles are 100 percent recyclable and some of the bottles are made with 25 percent.

Victoria Beckham’s Fashion Line Ditches Exotic Animal Skins | Care2 Causes

Victoria Beckham has become the latest major fashion designer to ban the use of exotic animal skins in her collections.

As of Fall 2019, all Victoria Beckham clothes are guaranteed to be free of alligator, snake and lizard skins. As the brand explores more ethically sourced products, its designers are proud to play a part in creating cruelty-free fashion.

A spokesperson for the Victoria Beckham brand explained:

We are happy to confirm that we will cease using exotic skins in all future collections as of our main Fall 2019 ready-to-wear presentation. This decision reflects the wishes of not only the brand, but also that of our customers.

Animal rights groups are applauding the Victoria Beckham brand for its new policy. PETA director Elisa Allen stated:

Victoria Beckham’s decision to ban exotic skins will spare countless remarkable animals immense suffering, and PETA calls on other luxury brands to follow her kind example.

So why is exotic skin use in fashion such a contentious issue? Well, the animals whose skins are used in our bags, belts and shoes are often poached — and their deaths are barbaric.

In 2017 PETA shocked the world with an exposé on crocodile skin farming in Vietnam. No animal should have to suffer to give us beautiful products. This is why it’s so encouraging to see some of the biggest names in fashion beginning to listen to their consumers who want cruelty-free products.

Victoria Beckham joins the likes of Chanel, which also went exotic-skin-free in December 2018. When announcing its new stance on exotic skin use, the brand also reaffirmed its commitment to fur-free fashion:

The Victoria Beckham brand has never used fur in its clothing or accessories collections and confirmed last year that the brand will remain fur free.

The fashion industry has seen some huge developments in recent years to turn the tide on animal cruelty. Burberry, Gucci, Versace and Coach are just some of the biggest brands who have completely banned the use of fur. In September 2018, the London Fashion Week became the first of its kind to not show any fur on its catwalk. Even Rihanna’s Fenty is a cruelty-free brand with an increasing range of vegan products.

What better way to inspire us all to be conscious of our fashion and beauty choices than to lead by example?

Fashion brands like Victoria Beckham pave the way for high street fashion; by promoting cruelty-free fashion, they encourage other brands to make more responsible choices. In turn, we as consumers can make careful, informed decisions about the clothes we choose to buy.

Coty to support a global end to animal testing for cosmetics

As a first step in the partnership, Coty has been awarded the Leaping Bunny certification for beauty range COVERGIRL.

COVERGIRL becomes the largest makeup brand to achieve the Leaping Bunny certification. The Leaping Bunny logo will feature on all COVERGIRL products, the best visible and independent assurance for consumers of a company’s commitment to no animal testing.

516871511copyOn September 30, two biohackers received 2 million dollars to develop the world’s first man-made cow’s milk.

By modifying sunflower oil to mimic milk fats and culturing yeast to release casein, Ryan Pandya and Perumal Gandhi are hoping to create a plant-based milk that is nearly identical to dairy.

Their startup, aptly named Muufri (sounds like moo-free), aims to tap into the 140 billion-dollar dairy industry and have animal-free milk on the shelves before 2017.

“We’re basically using biotechnology to make milk without pasteurization and without the risk of contaminants like pesticides, hormones or bacteria that can spoil the milk quickly,” Pandya says. “It’s quite similar to the process to make medicine and insulin, so it will be super sterile.”

Additionally, Muufri milk will have virtually no carbon footprint compared to milk taken from cows. Not only can it take up to 2,000 gallons of fresh water to produce one…
