Denmark buys last circus elephants so they can retire – CBBC Newsround

The government in Denmark has bought four elephants from Danish circuses in order to give them a proper retirement.

The elephants, who are called Ramboline, Lara, Djunga and Jenny, are the last four circus elephants in the country.

The government is paying 11 million Danish krone – about £1.3 million – for the animals.

The Danish government is planning to introduce a total ban on wild animals in circuses later this year.

They also said they are not yet sure where the elephants will live but anyone who have a suitable space should make themselves known.

In May 2019, the UK government announced a new law to ban travelling circuses from using wild animals, with MP Michael Gove saying “Travelling circuses are no place for wild animals in the 21st Century.”

It was decided at a big wildlife conference in August that baby African elephants will no longer be taken from the wild in order to be sold to zoos and circuses.

Earlier this year, a circus in Germany became the first in the world to use holograms instead of real animals in its acts

Yesterday, United States Senator Bob Menendez introduced the Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safely Protection Act (HR 2863) to prohibit the use of exotic or wild animals in public performances such as circuses, carnivals and parades. The legislation, which nationalizes New Jersey’s first-in-the-nation state ban issued last year, is cosponsored by Senators Richard Blumenthal and Cory Booker.
“Animals are living, breathing, and feeling beings that deserve to grow and thrive in their natural habitat or protected sanctuaries, not to be exploited to perform tricks in someone’s sideshow under cruel conditions,” Senator Menendez said in a statement. “The entire nation should follow New Jersey by doing what’s humane and right for these wild creatures.”
Wild animals used in public performances are typically subjected to small cages, physical abuse, and poor nutrition and hygiene, which can often lead to disease, infection, mental distress and depression. The unpredictability of wild animals also poses a threat to public safety.
“New Jersey has illustrated that the exploitative use of exotic animals in traveling performances is antiquated and no longer has a place in our society,” noted 2020 presidential candidate Cory Booker, who is also a longtime vegan. “By following in New Jersey’s footsteps, this bill would remove wild animals such as lions, tigers and elephants from harsh conditions and provide protections for workers and the public.”
Last year, New Jersey became the first state in the country to prohibit wild animals in traveling performances. The state bill had overwhelming bipartisan support in the state legislature. Rhode Island, Illinois, New York and Hawaii have since passed similar legislation.
The Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act would not apply to the use of animals in zoos or aquariums, research facilities, and certain films, television programs, or advertising. Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.-03) introduced companion legislation in the House.
Peace 4 Animals and World Animal News are among numerous animal welfare organizations in a coalition organized by Animal Defenders International fighting to end the use of wild animals in circuses.

Lion Brutally Attacks Trainer In The Middle Of Circus Show

The horrendous moment a lion attacks his trainer while cruelly performing in a circus has been caught on camera and it’s really awful.

The terrifying situation was filmed by a tourist as they watched the torturous circus in Lviv, Ukraine, causing mass outrage among viewers.

In the frightening footage, the a pack of lions are being made to perform tricks in a tiny, wire-mesh cage, when one of the lion jumps up and pounces on one of the trainers.

Another lion turns on trainer Oleksiy Pinko and for a few moments, he completely disappears beneath the powerful creatures.

Frantically, Pinko tries to push the lions back with a metal rod, but one of the beasts rears up and bites him in the leg, while another locks his strong jaws around his arm.

The audience, which contained hundreds of people, including children, start to scream in horror while other trainers use water hoses and metal bars to pry the lions of Pinko who was feeling the full wrath of the big cats.

After a fearsome battle, Pinko manages to make his escape away from the angry pair and emerges limping and dripping with blood.

A witness said:

I was just grabbing my daughter and trying to run because I thought they were going to get out.

Pinko, who is apparently famous for conducting death-defying, but undeniable cruel tricks involving lions in the circus, was later rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

Despite his injuries, Pinko made a full recovery and has been seen performing in the circus among the big cats since.

The watchers, however, seem to be and understandably more on the side of the meanly kept lions.

It’s great the trainer made a full recovery, but circus’ like this should not be encouraged, especially if it involves the abusing of large wild animals.

Sign Petition: End Animal Suffering by Banning Wild and Exotic Animals in Traveling Shows

Animal advocates are applauding the introduction of legislation in California that could make it the next state to end circus suffering by banning wild and exotic animal performances.

The Circus Cruelty Prevention Act (SB 313), which was just introduced by Senator Ben Hueso, would make it illegal to use wild and exotic animals in traveling shows, and would leave anyone found breaking the law facing fines of up to $25,000 for each violation.

Not only was this bill introduced over concerns about animal welfare, but also about the threat performing animals pose to public safety.

Even though wild animals have been used as performers in circuses for decades, we now know so much more about what they need to be physically and psychologically healthy and there’s no shortage of evidence showing that circuses can never come close to meeting those needs.

Both research and undercover investigations have exposed not only the problems inherent with keeping animals this way, denying them everything they need to thrive, but also the heartbreaking and violent abuses they’re exposed to behind the scenes that range from having food withheld to being beaten and blatantly mistreated.

While a number of cities in the state have already enacted bans or restrictions on the use of wild and exotic animals, a statewide ban would go much further to protect them from cruelty and exploitation, and it would send a strong message that using them as performers isn’t acceptable.

The pair’s defense of their actions has led many to believe that this is not the first time their animals have suffered this way. Big Cat Rescue was recently contacted by the Chabad of Sarasota and asked if we would bring big cats to their event to “provide a show” and then let guests – including children – “interact with them.” Of course, Big Cat Rescue is a true sanctuary and would never drag our cats to an event or allow anyone to touch our cats; the Chabad had us confused with a local Sarasota roadside zoo and circus with a name similar to ours.

We took the opportunity to try to educate leadership of the Chabad that big cats do not belong at events and dissuade them from going ahead with this plan to exploit big cats. We assumed the organization, like many we have educated in the past, was just not aware of the dark side of this exploitation. We assumed they would not knowingly want to support the exploitation and, in our opinion as well as numerous other respected animal welfare groups, abuse of big cats. We also provided detailed information about the roadside zoo/circus in Sarasota, including documentation of dozens of serious USDA violations of the Animal Welfare Act going back two decades.

Instead of appreciating the information and cancelling their plan to bring big cats to their event, leadership of the Chabad of Sarasota asked us to stop contacting them and ignored our further efforts to open a respectful dialog.

We need your help to show Chabad of Sarasota that there are MANY people who do NOT want to see big cats carted to events, forced to perform unnatural, cruel acts in circuses and used as entertainment and that children should be taught compassion for wild animals, not that exploitation is acceptable. Wild Animals Do Not Exist For Our Entertainment!

This summer, a 6-month old bear cub was found dead in a circus camp in Lithuania.

In response, protesters are begging the government to ban wild animals from circuses to stop the shameful exploitation of the beautiful species that, held in these conditions, are simply entertainment for the masses that don’t know any better.

Lions, tigers, bears, elephants and many more are broken into submission as cubs, barely weaned, ripped from their mothers’ sides and whipped until they blindly obey. The acts they are forced to perform amount to nothing but torture. Being forced to stand on two feet can cause animals to tear their ligaments, and jumping through fire can burn their fur and whiskers.

Studies have shown that pain and fear are the only elements that drive wild animals to perform in circuses, with the noise and lights pounding on their senses.

The Lithuanian government should follow other countries’ example and ban the use of wild animals in circuses. There’s no justification for this animal abuse.

Zena the Tigress Was Dragged by Her Tail During a Seizure While “Performing” in a Circus

Animal abuse is apparently a brother and sister bonding activity, too. Artur and Karina make their living abusing 6 tigers in a circus in Russia. One of their captives, Zena the tigress, had a seizure during a show and their response is so telling — they drag her by her tail, whip her and poke at her. But the truth is: she never should have been “performing” in this circus in the first place, especially not if she is epileptic.

Sign the petition to demand this abusive circus that exploits wild animals is shut down forever.

The video of Zena’s seizure shows the tiger after she had been jumping through hoops on fire, a task which is not at all natural to tigers. In fact, loud circus noises, lights, and sounds of people screaming are all very stressful to wild animals like tigers and they should never be exposed to it for human gain. But Zena is forced to do it nonetheless while the trainers yell at her and use whips to threaten her and the other five tigers.

Then Zena collapses and has a seizure that lasts over a minute. She defecates and convulses violently. And her trainer? He pulls her by her tail, whips her, and then someone throws water on her face. The audience is scared, and they should be. A wild animal is having a health problem and it’s likely due to the stress of “performing” in this abusive circus.

Indonesia’s last land-animal circus announces end of their cruel travelling shows

Oriental Circus publicly announce they will stop using animals in their travelling circus, raising hopes a government ban may be imminent.

For animals in Indonesia’s Oriental Circus, life is an endless round of drudgery, and cruelty.

Since 1967, the troupe has forced animals including elephants, tigers, birds and snakes to travel all over the country in cramped conditions spending the majority of their lives chained and unable to express any natural behaviours.

But now the circus has surprised many by publicly declaring they will stop using animals in travelling shows. They are Indonesia’s last travelling troupe exclusively featuring land animals in their performances. The country’s remaining travelling circuses continue to use aquatic animals.

Oriental Circus is currently performing for three weeks in Solo, Central Java with the company’s website announcing these shows will be the animals’ last on the road.

Animals Asia’s Animal Welfare Director Dave Neale said:

“We have campaigned against the Oriental Circus for many years and were delighted when we initially heard they were planning to stop the cruelty. Now, we have confirmation that the travelling shows will end and there are rumours an upcoming government ban on travelling animal circuses may be the reason.

“While there has been no official verification of this, if true this would be a huge step forward for animal welfare in Indonesia. Pivotally it could end Indonesia’s shameful travelling dolphin circuses, which sees dolphins loaded onto planes to be transported between islands.”

When Animals Asia’s Indonesia partner, Scorpion Foundation, visited Oriental Circus in Cikampek, West Java on 8 September they found that the circus was cancelling some shows due to the lack of customers.

Oriental Circus is owned by the Taman Safari Park and it is likely that the travelling animals will be sent to this facility when the circus ends.

Dave said:

“Taman Safari Park’s welfare standards fall far below what we expect, but the reality is it is probably the best available facility for these animals in Indonesia right now. Ending the performances, and particularly the conditions of travel would be a huge improvement to the animals’ lives.”

Animals Asia has opposed Indonesia’s travelling dolphin circus, known as “Sirkus Lumba-lumba”, since 2017. Nearly 40,000 people signed a petition asking Sriwijawa Air to end their cruel dolphin flights, but the airline ignored the calls for compassion.

The travelling circus dolphins are owned by Ancol Dreamland and Wersit Seguni Indonesia which also operate dolphin circus shows at their static facilities.

Dave said:

“Indonesia’s travelling dolphin circus simply must end for the country to have any form of accountability in regard to animal welfare. While many of the individual animals would likely have to continue performing in static facilities, at least it would show the country has some respect for welfare as well as helping to reduce demand for such shows and therefore the amount of wild capture for the entertainment industry.”

Petition: This Oregon County Stopped Circus Animal Suffering — Now the State Should

Last Summer, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus also known as the “Greatest Show on Earth” took their final bow. The traveling circus, hated by animal rights activists, had decided to pack away their tents, retire their elephants and put an end to the 146-year-old enterprise.

Many activists thought the end of America’s most famous circus would bring an end to the use of animal entertainment throughout the United States. In May 2017 for example, the National Geographic explained: “Why All of America’s Circus Animals Could Soon be Free.”

While we may be headed down a path that will end in freedom for circus animals we are sadly not there yet.

Case in point: The state of Oregon, one of the country’s most progressive governments, still permits traveling circuses and seems to have left it up to the counties to regulate whether or not they will allow them within their borders.

And that’s just what’s happened. In 2014, Catslop County became the first county in the state to ban the use of whips and bullhooks on animals — effectively keeping circuses like Ringling Bros. out. Now four years later, Multnomah County — the state’s most populous county that includes Portland — has also taken steps to ban traveling circuses. Any traveling enterprise using wild or exotic animals for live public “entertainment” or “amusement” is now prohibited.

While we can celebrate the great news, one wonders when the entire state will decide to put an end to these terrible traveling shows of cruelty. Last year, Illinois and New York became the first two states to ban circus elephants from their states. Why doesn’t Oregon do the same?

Animals are not entertainment. They have their own will and desires and deserve to live a life free from cruelty, preferably in the wild where they belong. Circuses, magic shows and aquarium spectacles that use live animals reduce living, breathing beings to objects that can be forced to do as we want, when we want. It’s not only cruel, it is wrong.

It’s time Oregon join New York, Illinois, El Salvador, Sweden and a whole host of other national and local governments in ending the animal entertainment industry. Please sign the petition and ask Oregon governor Kate Brown to ban the use of animals in circuses.

Petition: Improve dreadful condition of animals at Lok Kawi zoo Malaysia

The Lok Kawi Wildlife Park zoo is in the eastern Malaysian state of Sabah. Since opening in 2007, countless complaints about the state of its animals have been made by various organisations, despite claims by authorities that the zoo is also used to place rescued animals.

The zoo has again been exposed, revealing again the dreadful condition of how animals are kept. Photos of sun bears and tigers kept in horribly tiny night cages, injured animals and elephants mercilessly chained (one looks emaciated) out of public sight is now public knowledge, thanks to this online article. Besides this, enrichment, which is important for the mental and physical well being of animals, is never provided for any animal at the zoo.

Sign this petition to ask the new Sabah environment minister, Christina Liew, to take action and urgently improve the lives of animals at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park including the emaciated elephant. In 2015 a bill was introduced in the Pennsylvania state senate to ban wild and exotic animal performances in circuses. This bill was recently reintroduced in 2017, but since then it has stalled. We need to get this bill back on the senate agenda! Right now in the U.S. only two states, Illinois and New York, have bans on the use of elephants in the circus.

Animals forced to perform in a circus are deprived of physical and social needs, confined in small spaces, spending excessive time shut in trailers and train cars. These animals often demonstrate heartbreaking abnormal behaviors such as rocking, swaying, and pacing – indicating they are in distress and not coping with their abusive environment. Evidence from numerous animal-rights groups shows these animals are forced to perform tricks through physical violence, fear, and intimidation.

In 2017 Illinois and New York became the first states in the U.S. to ban circus elephant acts. This means that any circus that still uses elephants can no longer perform anywhere in the entire state of Illinois or New York. Now in 2018 New Jersey is poised to take this even farther and completely ban the use of any exotic animals in circuses, this includes elephants, tigers, lions, and bears.

All animals, especially elephants, suffer terribly in the circus industry. They lead lives of sadness, constant fear, and despair. This bill passed the New Jersey legislature by votes of 66-2-2 in the General Assembly and by 31-0 in the State Senate. Unfortunately outgoing New Jersey Governor Chris Christie decided to “pocket veto” the bill, which means that he declined to sign it before leaving office.

But now New Jersey has a new governor and therefore renewed hope to end circus suffering! A new revised circus bill will be presented to new governor Phil Murphy for his approval.

Please join me in asking governor Murphy to sign this very important bill into law. The state of New Jersey can lead the way to end circus suffering for all exotic animals in the United States!

Our investigators recently attended your show and witnessed stressed animals running in circles on the stage as a man with a whip guided their movement. The finale was a magic show that showcased three tigers in cages suspended in the air. These tigers are kept in cages 24 hours a day. It was loud, incredibly hot, and all of the animals were panting. There is nothing magical about animals that are crammed in cages or forced to do insignificant tricks.

Now more than ever people are becoming increasingly aware of the inherent cruelty of the animal entertainment industry. There are currently several animal-free circuses.

Petition: This Cruel Safari Park Is Torturing Monkeys

The macaque monkeys of Phuket Safari Eco+ Park in Thailand might look like they are having the time of their lives. They get to ride tricycles, listen and dance to music, and when they want to wind down, they can have a bit of a workout.

But if you haven’t guessed already, they are doing none of these things by choice.

When the tourists arrive, the music starts and the macaques enter the pavilion with metal chains around their necks along with their trainers. With a quick yank of the chain, the monkeys start to perform and any pretense of fun completely disappears. Any astute animal lover can tell that these animals are suffering.

The monkeys have a tight schedule and they are forced to perform throughout the day, but when they do get a “break,” they are stuffed in tiny metal cages backstage. The cages have no food or water, and they are left to sit in boredom until their next show.

But the macaques aren’t the only animals suffering at the park. Phuket Safari also has mature and baby elephants, snakes, sheep and other domesticated animals that they force to perform at the whim of paying clientele.

Parks like Phuket Safari are technically illegal. In 2014 the Thai government passed its first ever animal welfare law but it is rarely enforced. If the government doesn’t work to shut down these horrible facilities, animals will continue to suffer and Thailand will continue to be known as a country that turns the other way when it comes to animal cruelty.

An elephant was killed today in the streets of Spain. That’s a headline that we should never have to read. But when governments allow animals to be used as entertainment, tragedies like this can — and do — often happen.

Five innocent elephants, forced to work in a circus, were tossed from their trailer when the truck carrying the pachyderms lost control trying to overtake another vehicle. One lost its life, two others were injured and the others escaped without any physical injuries.

Yet, whether or not the elephants experienced any physical pain, what is certain is that these beautiful creatures are suffering mentally. Circus elephants are often sent on the road for hours at a time, traveling from one location to the next. Their trainers often use cruel methods to train them and coerce them into doing tricks they would never do in the wild.

And now, an elephant has lost its life all for the sake of “entertainment.”

While city, state, and national governments have been banning the use of animals in entertainment all across the world, Spain hasn’t gotten the memo.

It’s time for Spain to join its European allies like Italy, Belgium, Austria, Sweden and Portugal and a whole host of other national and local governments in ending the animal entertainment industry. Yesterday, CWI received information from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) regarding the elephant Anna Louise, after we submitted a request for follow-up from them.

As you may recall, CWI filed an emergency complaint with the USDA on behalf of Anna Louise last May. We found abnormalities in her gait, and were concerned about her well-being, as well as the safety of the public who were riding her.

Within two weeks of filing of the complaint, to the best of our knowledge, Anna Louise was taken off the road and has been residing at her “home base”, which is located on the property of her “owner” in Florida.

The FWC promised us late last year that they would in fact inspect the property and follow-up on our USDA complaint. We are pleased to report that they did in fact complete the inspection, which was done extremely thoroughly.

The report showed that Anna Louise is suffering from arthritis in her right elbow and appears to be overweight. While she is under regular care from a veterinarian, it was suggested to Anna Louise’s “owner” Tom Demry that she should lose some weight.

We were pleased to note that Mr. Demry stated that he is considering retiring from circus performances with Anna Louise. CWI encourages Mr. Demry to follow that pursuit, and hopes he will further consider retiring Anna Louise to a sanctuary environment where she can have contact with other elephants and not live out her life as a solitary elephant on his property.

CWI has written to the FWC requesting some additional information. We will keep you apprised of any advancements for Anna Louise.

The FWC is holding a public meeting seeking comment on their guidelines for elephant riding, and we strongly encourage you to speak out against elephant riding, which is a danger to both humans and elephants. The meeting details are: 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on April 5, 2018 at Hampton Inn & Suites, Lakeland South- Polk Parkway, 3630 Lakeland Village Blvd, Lakeland, FL 33803.

The traveling exotic animal protection act, which would end the use of wild and exotic animals in traveling circuses over concerns about their welfare and safety risk, is in need of a congressional sponsor!!

According to Animal Defenders International (ADI) there are an estimated 300 wild and exotic animals in the U.S. circuses today. For them, life is restricted to unnatural barren enclosures and long journeys in between being used as performers for our entertainment.

Research and undercover investigation have expose not only the problems inherent with keeping animals this way, but also the heartbreaking and violent abuse they’re exposed to behind-the-scenes that range from having food with hell to being beaten in training and blatantly mistreated.

Wild wild animals have been used in circuses for decades, we know so much more about these animals needs to be physically and psychologically healthy and that circumstances can never meet these needs even with the best intentions.

Dozens of animal advocates of all ages recently protested in Fletcher, North Carolina, outside of where a circus featuring wild animal acts was taking place inside the WNC Agricultural Center.
“Minutes Of Entertainment For You – A Lifetime Of Misery For The Animals” and “Don’t support circus cruelty” were among some of the powerful messages carried by adults and children.

Most of the people participating in the demonstrations earlier this month were from Asheville Voice for Animals, a non-profit group that is dedicated to promoting compassionate change for all sentient creatures through education, advocacy and activism.

As per WLOS, although the City of Asheville has already instituted a ban on shows that exploit wild and exotic animals in the name of so-called “entertainment,” the animal advocacy group wants to ensure that it becomes the norm in cities and counties throughout the state.
Informative flyers handed out throughout the event recognized that in the United States “more than 120 municipalities across 34 states have laws in place related to circus cruelty.”

While the numbers are growing, that is not nearly enough. Every city in every state should implement similar laws to ban circuses.
Sadly, according to Animal Defenders International (ADI), an estimated 300 wild and exotic animals are still being exploited in circuses in the United States.
Fortunately, The Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act, which would end the use of wild and exotic animals in traveling circuses over concerns about their welfare and safety exists, but it needs congressional support.

It’s time for the United States to join almost 30 countries that have already passed legislation banning wild and exotic animals in circuses and others who are working towards that goal.

Another cruel and archaic elephant circus act bites the dust—and we have dedicated animal rights activists to thank for it!

On a social media post advertising upcoming shows, Stardust Circus announced that it had removed the elephant acts.

“Unfortunately activists make it very difficult to travel with animals today,” Stardust wrote, adding that it has stopped touring with elephants for now (We hope it’s the very last such tour that the circus will ever have).

Earlier this year, after learning from PETA and a local activist that several Stardust Circus shows were scheduled to bring elephants owned by the notoriously cruel Carson & Barnes Circus to Arkansas armories, the major general of that state’s National Guard immediately prohibited upcoming performances and implemented a policy banning future animal acts. The circus then had trouble keeping scheduled performances as it endured more cancellations the next month.
We’re all too familiar with these well-documented animal abusers.

This isn’t the first time Stardust dropped an animal act after public outcry. Circus owner Oscar Garcia noted that after PETA protested a kangaroo boxing act, the traveling show nixed the ridiculous stunt.

The trainer who toured with Stardust, Habib Omar, is infamous in his own right: The Carson & Barnes employee has been filmed using a bullhook—a sharp steel-tipped weapon resembling a fireplace poker—to yank an elephant by the ear. And a whistleblower reported that the trainer would “warm up” the elephants with an electric prod—presumably so that there would be no visible marks from his abuse.

Carson & Barnes has racked up more than 100 violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act—including for failing to provide animals with basic necessities, such as adequate veterinary care, minimum space, shelter from the elements, and clean water. Just last year, in a scathing report, an expert veterinarian concluded that under the circus’ watch, elephants Libby and Bunny were “abused, injured, harmed, and harassed [as well as] suffering physically, in a state of psychological deterioration.”

Eliminating elephant acts didn’t save Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. If circuses want to prevent dwindling attendance and their ultimate demise, they’ll need to eliminate all animal acts.

While Stardust has dropped elephant acts, Garden Bros. Circus continues to exploit and abuse animals supplied by Carson & Barnes. BREAKING: Italy Just Voted to Ban All Animal Circus Acts | One Green Planet

Victory for animals! With one of the biggest circus industries in the world, Italy voted to phase out ALL ANIMALS used in circuses and traveling shows after a recent vote in the Assembly of the Parliament! The exciting news comes on the heels of India recently banning the use of wild animals in circuses, making Italy the 41st country to pass a national law prohibiting animals in circuses.

According to Animal Defenders International (ADI), a leading non-profit animal welfare organization, the rules on how Italy will implement phasing out all animals used in circuses will be set out within one year by a Ministerial decree. This is a huge breakthrough in the fight against circuses that uses animals, considering there are 100 circuses in Italy and an average of 2,000 animals forced to perform silly tricks.

“Travelling from place to place, week after week, using temporary collapsible cages and pens, circuses simply cannot provide for the needs of the animals. Through ADI’s undercover investigations we have shown the violence and abuse that is used to force these animals to obey and perform tricks,” ADI President Jan Creamer said in a press release. ADI has long been a supporter of the end of animals used in entertainment, having released undercover investigations inside animal circuses and championing countries to implement a ban.

Several other countries including Romania, Iran, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, as well as a number of U.S. cities like Los Angeles, New York City, and Portland, Maine have already instated similar legislation that bans the use of wild animals in circuses, showing us that the world as a whole has been making giant strides toward a more humane future.
