Petition update · Adopted from Pets at Home to be fed to a snake! · Change.org

Apr 14, 2018 — This is Joey. Joey was about 3 months old when he was adopted from Pets at Home last summer. His new owner brought him home and put him in a hamster’s cage next to a vivarium containing a 6ft Burmese python. He had no hay, no water. He wasn’t given a name. He just sat there, waiting to be fed to the owner’s pet snake.

When the time came the owner lifted him out of the cage to put him in the vivarium but Joey bit him out of sheer terror. The owner also got bitten by the snake.

At that point, his girlfriend got cold feet and they decided they couldn’t do it.*

Luckily they contacted Baby Blue Bee Bunnies rescue centre who were able to take the poor terrified rabbit.

Joey was given a name and rehabilitation started. However, due to his traumatic experience, he was very aggressive and it took months to get him to finally relax. Joey was in good hands. The rescue centre gave him the time, the love, the care and the life that he truly deserved.

Joey was adopted and now lives happily with three other bunny friends.

Pets at home claim they have a ‘vigorous system for checking potential pet owners’. Once again they failed. Joey was purchased to become snake food.

Please share Joey’s story and urge Pets at Home STOP selling rabbits!

Rabbits should NOT be sold in pet shops! They should only be adopted from reputable rescue centres who carry out home checks and make sure they don’t end up in the wrong hands.

Rabbits need our help. Thank you for giving them a voice. Thank you for supporting this cause.

Aug 10, 2016 — Contact: Doll Stanley, Director Justice for Animals Campaign, (662) 809-4483 doll@idausa.org

Ripley, MS (August 10, 2016) – Over 60,000 people have joined In Defense of Animals’ Mississippi-based Justice for Animals Campaign, Animal Advocacy Initiative of Mississippi, Mississippi Animal Rescue League and the House Rabbit Society to call on the Tippah County Fair organizers, community and state leaders to halt the fair’s “Rabbit Scramble” due to take place tomorrow. During the annual event, organizers release rabbits and other terrified animals into an arena and encourage small children to chase them down and catch them.

Pictures and video of the event reveal the horror of the fair’s frenzy, during which animals are caught by any means necessary with no concern for their welfare. Disturbing images show rabbits being dangled by their ears, choked around the neck and even dropped to the floor while children race around the arena.

The “Rabbit Scramble” violates Mississippi’s state statute MSSS 97-41-5, that criminalizes the cruel handling of animals.

“The cruel rabbit scramble violates Mississippi law, fails animals’ welfare and desensitizes children to animal suffering,” said Doll Stanley, In Defense of Animals’ Justice for Animals Campaign Director.

While the Animal Board of Health in Jackson has advised fair organizers to instruct children on how to hold the rabbits, most participants are too young to carry out the instructions. The rabbits are pursued chased by young children aged four and under – an age where most children have little to no understanding or ability to handle such delicate and vulnerable animals.

“Teaching children compassion towards animals is a responsibility we all share”, said Debra Boswell, Director of Mississippi Animal Rescue League. “Compassion for animals will surely go a long way toward compassion for humans and help broaden our society’s acceptance for all.”
Over 60,000 people have joined In Defense of Animals, Animal Advocacy Initiative of Mississippi, the House Rabbit Society and other likeminded organizations to call on fair officials to replace the animal chase events.

Fair organizers, sponsors, the Tippah County Sheriff, the Lieutenant. Governor, and other officials are being called on to replace the intrinsically cruel “Rabbit Scramble” with humane family bonding events like tug-of-war, sack races, apple bobbing, relay races, and more.

“People from Mississippi and all over the country are sickened and outraged by scenes from Tippah County fair’s inhumane “rabbit scramble”. It is unacceptable to chase rabbits down for fun, and barbaric to allow such sensitive animals to be choked, dropped to the floor and dangled by their ears. We call on fairgoers to boycott the fair’s outdated animal chase events and call on organizers to replace them with fun alternatives that the whole family can enjoy together,” said In Defense of Animals’ Justice for Animals Campaign Director, Doll Stanley.

“Mississippi’s Animal Cruelty laws are some of the weakest in the nation, but even these laws are being ignored when faced with an antiquated tradition like the Farmed Animal Scramble,” said Shelby Parsons of Mississippi Spay and Neuter. “Tens of thousands of concerned citizens around the country are pleading with Mississippi law enforcement and government officials to enforce their own laws, which is extremely detrimental to our state’s reputation, to Mississippians, and to Mississippi’s animals.”

Aug 2, 2016 — Despite 4 videos and several photos validating unlawful animal cruelty against domestic rabbits at the Tippah Co. Fair (evidence referenced from a Tippah News Facebook page); when asking Sheriff Karl Gaillard’s office if the rabbit scramble was being stopped do to the fact it is unlawful, the following statement was given by his dispatcher on 8/1/2016:
“IF” animal cruelty is going on, people will be arrested.

The Governor’s office states their Attorneys are looking into the complaints and that the Co Supervisors should be notified of the complaints.

County Supervisors do not respond to phone calls or formal complaints. When asking County Administrator Melinda Crumb if the County Supervisors were working to stop the animal cruelty event at the fair while referencing the MS Animal Cruelty laws forbidding the inhumane carrying of animals, she replied by stating they received the complaints and the Sheriff is elected and he runs the County.
Sheriff Karl Gaillard 662-837-9336
Tippah Co Board of Supervisors 662-837-3655

Mississippi State Statute 97-41-5 forbids the inhumane carrying of animals, this cruel event is unlawful.
Please call the following officials and respectfully ask them to review the complaints and to Help Stop the Inhumane Rabbit Scramble before more rabbits are injured and may die from the mishandling of young children let loose upon them in a hysterical mob. According to a complaint by expert Sharon L. Crowell-Davis DVM, PhD, DACVB Professor of Behavioral Medicine – this event encourages children to commit animal abuse and learn that cruelty to animals is not only acceptable, it is “fun” and desirable.
The unlawful event is scheduled to take place again on Aug 11, 2016.
