After a whistleblower told the U.S. government that the Explosive Detection Canines (EDCs) were being neglected, the inspector general’s (IG) office for the State Department began to investigate. What they discovered was horrifying.

At least ten bomb-sniffing dogs given to Jordan over the past 8 years have perished. Some of the dogs were young and healthy pups when they left but died shortly after they arrived in the Middle Eastern nation.

Zoe, for example, a 2-year-old female Belgian Malinois, died of heatstroke just 9 months after she arrived. Another dog, Mencey, a 3-year-old of the same bread, got so sick in Jordan from a tick-borne disease that she had to be returned to the United States for treatment. He died shortly afterward. Other dogs were found to be parasite ridden, emaciated, and lacking in proper medical attention. In light of their investigation, IG’s office determined that no more dogs should be sent to Amman. Yet, despite the initial complaint and the devastating findings of the IG’s report, dogs are still being sent.

These dogs are American heroes. They keep us and our allies safe by doing the jobs that are too dangerous for humans. The least we could do is make sure that they are well taken care of and have happy, healthy lives.

If Jordan or any other country that receives American EDCs cannot treat them humanely then they shouldn’t be allowed to have them. It’s just that simple.

PETITION: Justice for 29 Dogs Burned to Death in Kennel Fire

Crammed into tiny, filthy cages stacked atop one another, 29 dogs burned to death in a kennel fire in Carol Stream, Illinois. With nobody there to watch the dogs and zero fire safety measures in place, the dogs had no hope of escape as the building quickly became engulfed in flames.

A six-month investigation by local authorities revealed abhorrent practices at the kennel long before the fire. Officials discovered dogs with puncture wounds, lacerations, abrasions, weight loss, and dehydration.

Investigators say the house reeked and water bowls lay empty. One of the dogs that perished in the fire was tied to a bathtub so tightly that the canine wouldn’t have even been able to lie down to rest.

While firefighters and police managed to rescue 22 of the 58 dogs housed on the property, they were unable to reach those trapped on the second floor of the building.

Police have charged owner Garrett Mercado with 14 counts of animal cruelty and 14 counts of violating his duties as an animal owner. Now, we must urge prosecutors to treat this case with the severity it deserves, and call for a lifelong ban on the defendant from ever having another animal in his care.

Petition: Neglectful Cop Kills Ivy The Police Dog In Hot Car

I can’t imagine what this cop thought he was doing when he chose to leave his canine companion in a scorching hot car for hours. I can only assume he wasn’t thinking, but that neglect led to Ivy the police dog’s death and for that, he should be held responsible.

Sign on to ask the West Mercia Police Department to fire the police officer who left the dog in a hot car.

Police dogs are critical members of law enforcement, with their superior smelling abilities they are able to do jobs that we deem too dangerous for humans. Jobs like bomb sniffing and drug sniffing are especially good for dogs. But this means that dogs are putting their lives on the line to save human life. The least we could do is keep them safe from completely preventable deaths.

Ivy was a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois and she was left in the car in 26C (over 80 degree fahrenheit) for two hours while her handler did weapons training inside. The poor angel dog got heatstroke and was unresponsive when the irresponsible cop came back to her. She was rushed to the hospital but ultimately put down because her condition was so bad. On the bright side, Ivy’s death did lead to internal changes to the way police dogs are handled. But that doesn’t account for her needless death.

URGENT PETITION TO SIGN: These Zoo Owners Have Abandoned Their Animals. Now Their Fate Is Up in the Air.

Wild animals should never be kept in zoos. They were born with all the instincts they need to help them survive and thrive in the wild. While that fact may be true, there are still hundreds of thousands of non-domesticated animals still living in zoos today.

Once in captivity, however, animals are no longer self-sufficient. They are, for the rest of the lives, 100% dependent on the zoo staff for food, care, and stimulation. So when a zoo closes, it can’t simply, pull down the blinds, padlock the doors and walk away. No, before slapping on the “Closed” sign they first must figure out how they will care for the animals in their care.

Of course, that is the “ideal” situation. Some zoos, simply choose to abandon their animals, locking the door behind them as their menagerie stares back at them from behind the metal bars. This is exactly what happened to the zoo animals at Parque Zoologico Prudencio Navarro on Spain’s Costa de la Luz.

After years of complaints from concerned citizens, the zoo finally stopped even pretending to care for its critters and closed shop. This was supposed to be good news for the animal activists that fought hard to push the zoo to treat its animals better but now, the lions, tigers, and bears have nowhere to go, no dedicated caretaker and have only been provided with water and food because of some unknown good Samaritans who have taken it upon themselves to tend to the animals. Meanwhile, the zoo operators are long gone.

Of course, these heroes can only do so much. According to reports, the animals are festering in their own feces and urine. Their water moats are dirty and their overall condition is horrific. Additionally, since park staff has left, the security at the park is next to nothing. Dangerous animals could easily escape, putting both people and other zoo animals at risk.

The clock is ticking for these animals. They need to be rehomed to accredited sanctuaries at once so they can get the care they need and finally have a life free from zoo captivity. Ontario’s Marineland is home to the Dragon Mountain roller coaster, the Sky Screamer triple tower, and the “Ocean Odyssey” rides. It is also home to more than 4,000 live land and sea animals and a whole lot of controversy.

Over the last few years, the “amusement” park has come under public scrutiny for the several high profile marine deaths stretching throughout their nearly 60-year history.

According to One Green Planet, over their six decades of operation, the park has seen the deaths of, at least, 17 orca whales, 25 beluga whales, and an estimated 22 dolphins. So bad is their care that at one point even SeaWorld — no hero in animal rights — sued Marineland to get on of their orcas back whose health they claim had deteriorated after loaning it to the Canadian park.

Now they can add another victim to their list of animals that died in their care: Zeus the walrus. Zeus was once a fine specimen of a young, vibrant male walrus. But his years in captivity at Marineland had taken a toll on him.

No one noticed until a video of one of his performances went viral. The 2016 video showed Zeus to be a mere shell of his former self; he was emaciated and nearly collapsed during one of his performances. But that didn’t stop Marineland from continuing to use him in their shows.

Life in captivity for Zeus was no walk in the amusement park. He suffered from chronic regurgitation which arose from stress from captivity. His disorder meant that he couldn’t properly digest food and it left him “so undernourished that his hip bones and spine stuck out.”

In a statement last week, Marineland said that the necropsy performed on Zeus revealed he died of natural causes. But one of Zeus’s former trainers, Phil Demers, isn’t buying it. He told the Dodo that Zeus “had been ill for as long as [he’d] known him” — around 15 years.

Whatever the reason, Zeus like Marineland’s other animals should never have been kept in captivity in the first place. These animals are literally dying to be free and we must help.

Ask Marineland how many of their animals must die before they realize that what they are doing is animal cruelty.

Sign the petition and tell Marineland to end their live animal shows and give their animals to a proper sanctuary.

Apply the Cholito Law with the owner of this dog who died locked in his vehicle

A man left his dog locked up in his vehicle for more than six hours in Viña del Mar, with the suffocating heat he made, and the dog ended up dying. I suppose that due to the heat stroke or the dehydration caused by the high temperatures and the can not breath.

An auto usher saw the situation and tried to help the animal locked in the back of the vehicle, breaking a glass to rescue it, but the dog was already dead.

We are signing this petition for two reasons, first, that the owner of the dog apply the Cholito Law to go to jail, and I learned that the car usher was stopped for breaking the glass to save the animal, so I believe that not only should he be liberated but also rewarded for his courage.

Not only those who kill street dogs are criminals, these people who care less about their animals are as murderous as any other, and that is why I ask that you be condemned for murdering your dog.

The Asian elephant, the second largest land animal in the world is undoubtedly a hearty beast. But as any conservationist knows, their size and stature don’t protect them from all dangers. We know they face the daily threat of poachers, who kill them for their tusks and skin to sell in the black market. But they also face additional dangers, ones that some could never predict.

That’s what happened to a family of elephants in near the town of Kamalanga, India. The herd of 15 was tragically cut in half after. The group was out searching for food when they came across a stream near a paddy field. As they walked through the area, seven of these beautiful animals came into contact with sagging 11-kilovolt power cables. Seven of the pachyderms were electrocuted instantly.

According to the Forest Department, it is the worst mass death of elephants in the area’s history. And what makes it worse is that the whole thing could have been avoided. The central power company, who managed the cables, had been warned several times about the dangers of the hanging power lines yet did nothing, and now seven endangered Asian elephants have died.

Apart from their excruciating death, elephants are known to mourn their dead, for a family of elephants that lost more than half of their pack, the pain must be terrible.

Officials say some people have been suspended and others are being investigated for their responsibility in this horrible accident. But the fact remains that the power lines in the area still pose a danger to other elephants who may happen upon more hanging cables or other risks.

The central power company, apart from being held responsible, must do a review of the entire area and ensure that the rest of the elephants in the area are not in danger because of their negligence.

While Thousands of People Evacuated From Hurricane Florence, Millions of Animals Drowned on Factory Farms

In the wake of Hurricane Florence, countless North Carolina families have packed up their most valuable belongings and evacuated their homes in the interest of their own safety. Most fleeing residents with pets have done everything in their power to bring their dogs, cats, and other animal companions with them or, if doing so wasn’t possible, arranged for them to go somewhere safe during the storm.

On the contrary, the millions of animals trapped inside of North Carolina’s factory farm operations haven’t been given this very basic right to be protected from a horrific death by drowning.
Rather than being treated like the living creatures they are and evacuated along with the majority of the humans and pets in the path of Hurricane Florence, livestock have remained confined inside metal cages with no chance to escape as the state has experienced extreme flooding.

These photos were shared by Woodstock Farm Sanctuary via Steve Helber of the AP, and they illustrate the state that factory farms have been left in. Woodstock writes, “There are nine million pigs across the state, babies living their entire lives inside giant sheds. Mothers in metal cages, unable to save themselves or their piglets.”

At one of the state’s industrial meat production facilities, Sanderson Farms, a whopping 1.7 million chickens have already died, and this number is expected to continue climbing and to include pigs and turkeys as well as flooding persists and farmers remain unable to access the buildings where the surviving animals are stuck suffering without adequate food and water.

This is an absolute tragedy, yet instead of being regretful regarding the massive loss of animal life, all the company seems to be concerned with is how much money it will lose. In a press release, Sanderson Farms described the millions of dead chickens as being “destroyed as a result of flooding,” as if they were disposable objects rather than living, breathing beings.

For this factory farming operation and the numerous others across the state that left countless livestock to drown or starve to death during the storm, innocent farm animals losing their lives is simply seen as a financial loss.

As Gene Baur of Farm Sanctuary described the upsetting situation in a Facebook post, “Sad but predictable … Farm animals are the most abused of all, and there wasn’t even an effort to relocate them, which would have been logistically difficult.”

He went on, “At the very least, factory farms should not be located in areas prone to flooding, and tax dollars should [not] be used to reimburse this cruel industry, which ironically and wrongly opened their statement by announcing that they didn’t experience loss of life in the wake of the storm. Please note, chickens and other farm animals are living animals, and their deaths very much represent a loss of life.”

We couldn’t agree more. Quite frankly, it’s difficult for us to fathom how people can be so nonchalant about animals dying en masse. But then again, these creatures would have eventually met a cruel fate at the slaughterhouse even if they hadn’t died in a flood. It’s difficult to say which is worse.

Try as we might to ignore it, the unpleasant reality is that our insatiable appetite for meat and dairy is what is fueling this inhumane industry. The huge demand for cheap animal protein in the U.S. has led to the rise of factory farming and the resultant disturbing treatment of animals as commodities rather than as the intelligent, precious beings they truly are. We also have to acknowledge the horrific irony that industrial animal agriculture contributes immensely to climate change, which is making these huge storms more frequent and powerful, and sadly, in every scenerio, it is the animals who pay the worst price.

But it doesn’t have to be like this. We can all help dismantle this industry and bring about a more sustainable and humane future by swapping out meat and dairy for plant-based alternatives.

Petition: Vito the Police Dog Died Because His Handler Left Him in a Locked Car

The temperature in Detroit on June 28 only reached a high of 78 degrees, but it was hot enough to lead to the death of Vito a police German shepherd. Vito’s handler had left him in his patrol car with the air conditioner running while he went to pick up another car. But while he was out, the motor turned off and Vito began to overheat in the cab.

By the time the officer returned, Vito already showed signs of heatstroke. He was rushed to the vet but unfortunately, he died from cardiac arrest the next day.

Detroit Police K9 patrol cars are equipped with an emergency heat alert system. When officers leave their dogs in the car with the air on, the backup heat alert system is supposed to roll down the windows if the car’s motor turns off while running the AC. This did not happen. Tragically, in Vito’s case the heat alert system failed and he was left to die.

Detroit Police Department (DPD) says they are looking into the incident and that the officer, who is heartbroken, has been stripped of his dog handling duties. Officials believe both the emergency heat system and the officer are at fault. That’s because as an ultimate fail-safe, DPD requires their K9 officers to check on their dogs every 30 minutes — “no matter what.” Unfortunately, Vito’s handler didn’t do that, he arrived 10 minutes late and by that time Vito was too far gone.

Even with two fail-safes, Vito was doomed, and it isn’t just the Vito’s handler’s fault. According to RSPCA of Australia, a dog in a locked car can die in “just six minutes.” Even when it’s cool outside —like on the day Vito was locked in his car — a locked car with a dog inside can quickly turn into a hot box, where the temperature can spike up to 100 degrees in minutes. In that kind of heat, dogs can suffer. Animals can sustain brain damage or even die from heatstroke in just 15 minutes.

So if that’s the case, then DPD’s “mandatory” every-30-minute check-in would still leave most dogs in danger if the emergency heat backup failed like it did for Vito.

It is unrealistic to think that K9 officers can check on their dog every 6 minutes to ensure it is OK. But giving officers an arbitrary 30-minute window puts dogs like Vito in danger. That’s why Care2 believes DPD’s K9 unit needs to update their policy to prohibit their officers from leaving their dogs in unattended patrol cars.

Petition: PetSmart Boarding Killed a Beloved Service Dog!

Aspen was a beautiful and beloved 4-year-old service dog to famous YouTuber Corey Dixon. But when Corey left her at a PetSmart boarding facility for a week, he had no idea it would mean the end of her life. Dixon picked her up at the end of the week and she was extremely sick, sitting in a pile of her own vomit. PetSmart had not alerted Corey or had Aspen looked at by a vet, despite her obvious ailment. A few days later, Aspen had to be put to sleep.

Sign the petition to demand that PetSmart takes responsibility for this tragic and senseless death of an amazing service dog.

Aspen was trained to know when Corey’s heart issues acted up and alert people if something went wrong. He said that Aspen had fully saved his life no fewer than three times.

In the one week of Aspen’s boarding at the PetSmart facility, she lost a ton of weight, was throwing up, was shaking and drooling extensively. So why didn’t anyone at the boarding facility have her checked out sooner or contact Dixon? This kind of negligence on the part of people entrusted with lives is truly unbelievable.

Corey has proof that Aspen went into the facility completely healthy. Meaning something must have happened while she was there and PetSmart did nothing to help her. The poor girl was probably suffering for days. Once Corey picked her up, he took her right to the vet. But had she seen a vet sooner, she may still be living a full life with Corey and keeping him safe too.

Family accuses Delta of trying to cover up dog’s bloody death

The family whose Pomeranian died while traveling with Delta accused the airline of trying to cover up the dog’s bloody death.

Michael Dellegrazie said his pup named Alejandro was found dead last Wednesday in his carrier, along with a bloody blanket during a layover at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, news station WDIV reported.

An attorney for the owner suggested someone tried to wash the dog blanket and carrier to get rid of evidence.

“It was wet,” lawyer Evan Oshan told the Associated Press. “They couldn’t get the blood stains out. There was an attempt to clean it.”

Oshan said that the dog traveled in cargo on the flight headed to Newark, New Jersey, from Phoenix. The dog was alive when the plane landed in Detroit for a layover, according to WDIV.

Nearly two hours later, the dog was discovered dead in his carrier at an airport cargo facility.

“When he landed here in Michigan, he was alive at 6:30 a.m., and then at 8:20, he wasn’t moving and it just doesn’t make any sense to me,” Dellegrazie told the news station, adding that the 8-year-old dog passed a physical before the trip.

A necropsy will be performed on the Pomeranian to determine what caused his death.

Dellagrazie is also demanding answers from the airline.

“We lost a family member,” Dellegrazie said. “That’s exactly what happened, and somebody has to be responsible for it.”

A Delta spokesperson said the airline is “conducting a thorough review” of the incident.

Inspectors from the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) were horrified to discover that horses in the care of the South African Army Special Infantry Capability (SAASIC) unit of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) were starving to death.
According to a statement released by the organization and a post on its Facebook page yesterday, “25 horses on the army base were in such emaciated condition or compromised state of health that to prevent further suffering they had to be euthanized.

In 2013, the SANDF and NSPCA entered into a Memorandum of Understanding which was formally signed in May 2016, but the SANDF has continually reneged on the agreement, particularly the SAASIC Unit, with regards to their responsibilities to adequately care for the animals in their control.
Their failure to secure suitably qualified personnel or adequate facilities, combined with a non-empathetic infrastructure that has repeatedly failed the animals in their care, has resulted in a complete breakdown in the welfare conditions afforded to the horses.
The main herd had no food, the horses had no other option but to eat soil and their own feces. Food was only provided to the horses after the NSPCA forced the SAASIC unit into taking emergency action to secure adequate feed for the animals due to process restrictions.
Further investigations revealed that prior to this inspection, the Military Veterinary Institute (MVI) had to step in and euthanize starving horses and treat others as a result of ongoing neglect.
A further 169 horses are currently being kept on the Potchefstroom property in the North West Province which is overstocked, has inadequate shelter, and is a hazardous environment for these animals.
The NSPCA will be laying criminal charges against the persons responsible for the suffering of these horses.
The NSPCA is an organization which struggles with funding and receives no assistance from the government, we rely on the public to continue the much-needed work that we do. The NSPCA will need to continually check on the remaining horses to ensure that they are being adequately cared for. This is a huge strain on already scarce resources that come from the generous public – these resources should not have to be spent on ensuring that the government upholds the law.

Petition: Nearly 200 Animals Abandoned and Left to Fend for Themselves

Shri Thanedar, currently a candidate in Michigan’s gubernatorial race, was the owner of an animal testing facility that went bankrupt. When it shuttered its doors, the candidate left the 170 dogs and monkeys inside to fend for themselves.

According to news reports, after it closed, ex-employees continued to bring the 118 beagles food and water by jumping the fence. And the monkeys’ former caregivers reached out to an animal rescue organization to let them know about the 55 long-tailed macaque monkeys that were also left at the complex.

If it weren’t for the efforts of ex-employees from the clinic, and animal rights activists, it is quite possible they would have perished.

For his part, Mr. Thanedar says that when he owned the testing facility the animals were never harmed and always in good care.

But if he cared so much about their well-being, how could he just abandon them without helping to find them new homes?

Every day countless animals from dogs and cats to rabbits and pigs are abandoned in our America. Sometimes they are lucky and kind people take them in, other times they are forced to live in the wild and still others die. Despite being illegal, animal abandonment is a huge problem. Rescue organizations work hard to help those animals left in the cold and find them new loving forever homes. In this case, they helped save nearly 200 dogs and monkeys.

We owe them a debt of gratitude for the job they do.

That’s why Mr. Thanedar should admit that he was wrong for abandoning those animals and donate to an animal rescue organization who helps find animals like the 170 dogs and monkeys new homes when they are no longer wanted.

Breaking news: Jury finds New Hampshire Great Dane breeder guilty of animal cruelty

In a huge victory in our ongoing fight against commercial breeders who neglect and mistreat the animals in their care, a New Hampshire jury today found a woman who kept 84 Great Danes in filthy conditions inside a New Hampshire mansion guilty on 17 counts of animal cruelty.

This is a fitting end to a horror story that began to unfold in June 2017, when The HSUS assisted in an extraordinary rescue of 84 Great Danes from the custody of Christina Fay. Fay claimed she provided the dogs with outstanding care, but when our Animal Rescue Team entered the building with the Wolfeboro Police Department, which had requested The HSUS’s assistance, the contrast between the mansion’s opulent façade and the conditions inside was shocking. There was an overpowering smell that hit our team members as they walked in, and feces and debris were smeared across all the walls to the point where the windows were opaque. Other dogs in the home appeared to have spent countless hours in cages with no access to water.

In December, a district court convicted and sentenced Fay on 10 counts of animal cruelty, a decision she appealed. The jury that handed down today’s decision after a two-week trial at the Carroll County Superior Court in Ossipee, New Hampshire, heard compelling testimony from witnesses, including a veterinarian experienced in investigating animal cruelty cases who testified that conditions within Fay’s home were the worst she had ever seen.

Many of the dogs were ill and in distress when we found them, and suffered from an array of health problems, including severe eye issues and symptoms associated with communicable illnesses. For The HSUS, which has led the effort to care for the dogs at an emergency animal shelter we constructed especially for them, this has been an expensive undertaking that has cost $1.3 million so far.

On a related track, we have been working with New Hampshire lawmakers to address the enormous financial burden on taxpayers and non-profit organizations in caring for animals legally seized from cruelty investigations. Last week, the state Senate passed a bill that puts the financial burden of caring for rescued animals on the perpetrators of the cruelty involved, rather than on taxpayers.

The bipartisan bill, introduced by Senate Majority Leader Jeb Bradley, R-Wolfeboro, would also reform commercial breeder regulations and strengthen penalties for egregious cruelty. New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, who announced this summer that he’s planning to work with advocates and lawmakers on common sense regulation protecting animals, applauded the passage of the Senate bill and has urged the House to send it to his desk. “Animal Cruelty will not be tolerated in New Hampshire,” Sununu said, adding that the bill would ensure that the “horrendous treatment of the Great Danes from Wolfeboro never happens again.”

This week, we also expect the New Hampshire Senate finance committee to vote to approve a $200,000 appropriation in the bill which would fund two new inspectors for the Department of Agriculture to inspect not only commercial dog kennels but all currently licensed entities like animal shelters, rescue organizations, and pet stores. A hearing to determine sentencing for Fay and the custody of the dogs is expected to be scheduled within 30 days.

P.S. In another case brought to light by our HSUS rescue team, we got good news last week from Alabama, where we helped with a rescue of 65 dogs from a suspected breeding operation in 2015. The dogs and puppies were starving, severely underweight, and living in terrible conditions. Last week, a court found defendant Jerome Wesley Hughes guilty on six counts of felony animal cruelty and one misdemeanor.

Justice for Cattle Starved to Death

A Missouri dairy farmer has been charged with severe animal neglect and abuse after many of his cattle were reportedly found dead from starvation. According to his neighbors, he was ‘not the type’ to run a dairy farm, yet refused to ask for assistance when he began to struggle, and simply let his animals die. When police found this abused beagle puppy, skeleton from starvation, the poor dog was in such bad shape that the Vets thought they’d have to euthanize. This emaciated puppy with just one of the five dogs seized from a Leitchfield, Kentucky home. All of them were severely neglected and living among dead animals including several dead chickens. Although the puppy managed to survive the round-the-clock  veterinarian care, the dog would likely had died too had the police not intervened.

Justice for 44 Dogs Who Died Due to Alleged Neglect
