The SR-71 Blackbird is one of the sickest planes ever made, operating at speeds of Mach 3.2 and flying at altitudes over 85,000 feet. It was retired in 1999 but while operational it was like the boogie man of the sky.

It flies so high and fast that surface-to-air missiles couldn’t even touch it; it would just outrun them. It still holds the world record it set in 1976 for the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft ever.

Elon Musk calls it the “coolest plane ever” and named one of his sons after it.
