Any Teslas round here? [image credit: Edal Anton Lefterov @ Wikipedia]
A bit of light relief perhaps, unless you’re already one of the victims or could soon become one. Are electric cars more appealing than combustion-engined types to hungry rodents? Check those brake cables.

Elon Musk may have a rat problem, says The New York Post.
Fans of the South African billionaire’s electric cars say rats, mice and rodents are chomping down on their Teslas.
And despite having dropped tens of thousands of dollars to buy the pricey vehicles, Tesla refuses to cover the damage.
Sarah Williams, a 41-year-old physician who lives in Manhattan and uses her Tesla to commute to work in the Bronx, told The Post of an alarming incident when she took her 2018 Model 3 into Tesla’s Paramus, NJ, dealership in mid-May after her air conditioner had stopped working.
South Korea took measures to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the country on Tuesday with the country’s capital of Seoul and nearby areas instructing gyms on what kind of music they are allowed to play.
According to the BBC, “Gyms in South Korea’s capital Seoul and its surrounding region have been told not to play music with a tempo higher than 120 beats per minute (bpm), in order to limit the spread of Covid-19.”
Treadmills will also only be allowed to reach a maximum speed of 6km/h (or 3.7 mph). People are also not permitted to use the showers at the gyms and must limit their time at indoor sports complexes to two hours. Health authorities have said that the limitations will prohibit people from breathing too quickly or getting sweat on one another.
BBC reported:
The move has been questioned by gym owners.
Kang Hyun-ku, who owns a gym in Seoul, asked whether there was any proof a choice between classical music and BTS had an impact on spreading the virus.
He also told Reuters many people used their own earphones, asking: “How do you control their playlists?”
But officials say the measures help prevent gyms from closing completely.
South Korea recently had a spike in COVID-19 cases with 1,193 new cases reported on Monday, per Worldometer. Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum said on Friday that the nation had gotten to “maximum crisis level.” The last time that the country had a similar number of cases was in December when the numbers were recorded at 1,047 cases.
According to The Korea Herald, the public is criticizing the move, saying that the rules are “nonsensical” and “ridiculous.”
“Starting Monday, Korea started enforcing the most restrictive social distancing measures in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province for the next two weeks,” the outlet noted, adding that “[p]rivate gatherings of three or more are banned from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. in these areas, and private gatherings of five or more are banned throughout the rest of the day. Violators face fines of up to 100,000 won ($87).”
“I don’t know what’s more to worry about these droplets when everyone wears masks without exception,” said Jang, a 32-year-old office employee based in Seoul who frequents the gym nearly every day.
“They require us to wear face masks while working out, check temperature before entry and provide our phone numbers, and I have closely followed these rules every day, and now they want us to stop running and listen to ballads?”
“Hardcore cardio has marked the start and end of my daily exercise routines, and now they want me to run slower, but they ask us to leave in two hours,” Jang added. “What do they want from us? Does the government want me to get fat and give up our lifestyle for the sake of these dumb rules?”
Health officials appear to be standing by their decision, however, as Son Young-rae, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Welfare, said in a radio interview Monday.
“When you run faster, you spit out more respiratory droplets, so that’s why we are trying to restrict heavy cardio exercises,” Son Young-rae said, adding, “We also agreed on this (120 bpm) standard (with related groups) to transition strenuous aerobic exercises at fitness clubs to less-intense ones.”
Additional elements of the rules also seem to include that three individuals cannot be in the same taxi after 6p.m. when the private gathering limitation goes into effect. Officials have said, however, that it depends on each circumstance. “If the three were going to the same private gathering together, it could be a violation, but if each were heading to different destinations, it could be allowed, they explained,” per The Herald.

Some Los Angeles-area beaches were closed to swimmers on Monday after 17 million gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the Pacific Ocean.
Sanitation officials said the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant in Playa del Rey had become “inundated with overwhelming quantities of debris” after a power outage, triggering the plant’s relief system to discharge the waste matter through a pipe one mile offshore.
Hyperion Executive Plant Manager Timeyin Defeta said in a statement that the “emergency measure” was necessary “to prevent the plant from going completely offline and discharging much more raw sewage.” He added, “Normally the discharge of treated sewage is through the five-mile outfall.” According to the L.A. Times, “Dafeta said he believes that the incident was the largest amount of untreated sewage discharged through the one-mile pipe over the last 10 years,” and “the one-mile pipe was last used for a major discharge of wastewater in 2015.”
17 million gallons of sewage is about 6% of a daily load, Defeta said.
The L.A. County Department of Public Health issued a beach closure order on Monday affecting swim areas around Dockweiler State Beach and El Segundo Beach. They will remain closed until water samples are confirmed negative for elevated bacteria.
On Monday afternoon, L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn tweeted, “We are going to need answers about how and why this happened.”
“Protocols for notifying regulatory agencies and the State’s Office of Emergency Services were followed,” said Defeta on Monday. “Water quality sampling and testing of shoreline (beach) samples are currently being conducted, and our monitoring vessel traveled to both outfalls to make observations and take samples for analyses following regulatory permit protocols.”
Shortly after taking this picture a lifeguard approached me and said that 17 million gallons of sewage were dumped in this ocean last night… he did say that I would want to take a good long shower tonight as well which I will be doing pic.twitter.com/TtwhEM327Q
At about noon on Sunday, a large amount of debris unexpectedly clogged filtering screens with openings less than an inch in size at the treatment plant, said Barbara Romero, the director of L.A.’s Department of Sanitation and Environment.
The plant’s managers tried adding screens to replace the ones that were blocked. They also tried redirecting the flows to a storm drain system within the plant — an alternative way to bring the water through the normal treatment process.
But after several hours of recirculating the water, the system was still too overwhelmed…
So about 7:30 p.m., plant workers discharged the wastewater one mile out and 50 feet deep into the ocean. The normal process directs treated wastewater 190 feet down.
According to Romero, sanitation workers successfully routed the flows of water back through the standard treatment process around 4:30 a.m. on Monday.
Heal the Bay, an environmental nonprofit dedicated to protecting coastal waters of Greater L.A. warned that “bacteria and viruses in raw sewage are extremely dangerous to people and can carry a variety of diseases.”
The group posted information about the discharge on its website and urged people to stay out of Santa Monica Bay until further notice.
PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT: 17 million gallons of raw sewage were spilled into the Santa Monica Bay on 7/11-7/12. Dockweiler State Beach and El Segundo Beach are closed to the public. We recommend staying out of the water. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.https://t.co/8sP1MplBKapic.twitter.com/PNl7QJlu9u
“Debris such as tampons and plastic trash, when released into the Bay, can harbor bacteria and can cause entanglement of wildlife, but it seems in this case that debris were successfully filtered out of the spill before it made it to the Bay.”

Texas state House members voted 76-4 Tuesday to send law enforcement to track down and return dozens of Democratic lawmakers who fled the state to break quorum and block legislation on election reforms.
The state House cannot vote on legislation without a two-thirds majority of its 150-member body present. At least 51 Democratic House members fled the state on Monday, taking chartered flights to Washington, D.C., in protest of the Texas election reform efforts and in support of the For The People Act, a Democrat-backed proposal for the federal government to take over much of the election process.
Texas House members voted Tuesday for law enforcement to bring back “under warrant of arrest, if necessary,” the absent House members, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) called a special session of the legislature last week the focus on a slew of legislation that Democrats in the House derailed earlier this year with a similar act, breaking quorum and preventing the House from proceeding. The election reform legislation is part of that bundle of bills that was tabled.
Abbott pledged Monday that the runaway House members would be arrested as soon as they returned to Texas.
“What the law is, it’s in the Constitution, and that is the house, the State House of Representatives who were here in the Capitol in Austin right now, they do have the ability to issue a call to have their fellow members who are not showing up to be arrested, but only so long as that arrest is made in the state of Texas,” Abbott said during an appearance on Fox News. “That’s why they have fled the state. Once they step back into the state of Texas, they will be arrested and brought to the Texas Capitol, and we will be conducting business.”
Abbott also accused the Democrats of misrepresenting the election legislation, which includes reforms such as mandatory voter identification, in order to justify their trip to Washington, D.C.
“The thesis that they are operating under is completely false, because what the Texas law does, doesn’t hinder anybody’s ability to vote,” he said. “In fact, interestingly, what Texas is seeking to do is to add additional hours to vote. Texas has 12 days of early voting and the hours of which will be expanded. And we will ensure that hours are expanded on Election Day also. So their entire thesis is completely wrong.”
The state lawmakers have planned to take such unprecedented action for weeks. The lawmakers had considered fleeing to West Virginia and Arizona to pressure Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) to support the For The People Act. The Democrats eventually decided against fleeing to either state out of fear that GOP governors would help extradite them back to Texas.
“Today, Texas House Democrats stand united in our decision to break quorum and refuse to let the Republican-led legislature force through dangerous legislation that would trample on Texans’ freedom to vote,” state Democratic leaders said in a joint statement Monday as lawmakers boarded chartered planes to D.C.

Time doesn’t always heal, and you just need to shut the hell up forever, especially if you’re a white liberal who was caught culturally appropriating Spanish culture for years. Remember, Hilaria Baldwin? She’s Alec Baldwin’s wife who paraded as some Spaniard but was really some white chick from a well-to-do family from Massachusetts. Her accent is fake—everything. Even after she was busted around Christmas time last year, she insisted she was Spanish. Again, total white liberal woman nonsense right here.
Now, Hilaria has woken up from her siesta to declare that culture can be fluid. No, that’s not how this works, señora. No es la verdad (via Entertainment Weekly):
Seven months after an outcry erupted on social media questioning her heritage, and in particular, her connection to Spain, Hilaria Baldwin says she sees herself as “multi,” and believes culture can be “fluid.”
In an Instagram post on Thursday, Baldwin, wife to Alec Baldwin, said she recently had an opportunity to have a discussion with family members, now that COVID-19 restrictions have eased.
“We talked about how we grew up, our languages, our cultures-multi& very valid. We discussed belonging& how there are people who want to deny others their right to belong,” she wrote, not mentioning the December 2020 scandal when various social media users questioned her Spanish heritage and sometimes use of a Spanish accent (like when she forgot the word for cucumber on Today), forcing her to later clarify that she was born in Boston.
In Thursday’s post, Baldwin, who has previously said she grew up in Massachusetts and Spain, lamented labels.
“When you are multi, it can feel hard to belong. You are constantly going back and forth, trying to be more this or more that,” the mom-of-six shared. “You feel you have to explain why you are the way you are, trying to fit into a world of labels when there might not be one that perfectly defines you.”
[…]
In her post, Hilaria employed the word “fluid,” and said it applied to culture.
“We need to normalize the fact that we are all unique-our culture, languages, sexual orientations, religions, political beliefs are ALLOWED TO BE FLUID. No two of us are completely alike,” she wrote.
I was raised by my parents who are of Italian and Irish descent. I’m Korean. There’s no way in hell I’m going to identify as either because I’m not. Just take the “L,” Baldwin. You were a white lady that got caught pretending to be a Spanish woman. I do feel bad for your white kids who have very Spanish-sounding names. This whole fiasco makes you look like an idiot. Just walk away. Please. Granted, you’re not as nuts as the English dude who got a ton of plastic surgery and then declared himself Korean. That’s not saying much, though.
Alec Baldwin is supposedly on vacation in the Hamptons while this latest public relations nightmare has resurfaced again for his family. Maybe he just fled to someplace that was safe.
Illegal immigrant women who are pregnant or nursing will no longer be arrested or detained, barring exceptional circumstances, ICE announced Friday.
Pregnant women can still be sent into the immigration courts to face eventual deportation, but should not be placed into a custodial setting for fear of disrupting the pregnancy or the bond with a nursing child, the agency said in its new policy.
When circumstances do require a pregnant, postpartum or nursing woman to be taken into custody, she must be given mental health services and housed in facilities that can handle her needs, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.
And the use of restraints on pregnant women remains banned, except in cases where it’s ordered by a doctor or where the woman is deemed to be an immediate threat to herself or others.
“Given the unique needs of this population, we will not detain individuals known to be pregnant, postpartum or nursing unless release is prohibited by law or exceptional circumstances exist,” said Tae Johnson, ICE’s acting director. “This reflects our commitment to treat all individuals with respect and dignity while still enforcing our nation’s laws.”
The policy drew praise from immigrant rights advocates, but they said ICE should go further.
“ICE should stop detaining or arresting people who would be at particular risk in detention, must implement robust oversight of detention facilities, and ensure the release of all people who would be particularly vulnerable in detention,” said Eunice Cho, a lawyer on the American Civil Liberties Union’s prison project.
