Pandemic Drones Being Produced To Surveil Our Health

A drone developer claims to be working on new technology that uses sensors to monitor people’s heart rates and temperatures. Such technology has privacy advocates feeling rather unsettled.

Canadian drone company Draganfly says it’s working with the Australian Department of Defense and the University of South Australia to develop pandemic drones.

The drones leverage a computer vision system that is able to detect respiratory rates of people below its flight path. If these pandemic drones work as advertised, they’ll capture human sneezes and coughs.

Business Insider obtained demonstration images that show how these pandemic drones could monitor large events or nursing homes. Here’s a working example of how the pandemic drone functions. You’ll see in the demonstration below, as a man coughs, the drone is able to display it.

A human operates the drone as it soars above people. The information is cast back to the control device whereas the coughing or ill human’s location is quickly detected. The group claims to have a $1.5 million budget.

“We had imagined the technology being used in a future relief expedition to some far-away place. Now, shockingly, we see a need for its use in our everyday lives immediately” Dr. Javaan Chahl, defense science and technology chair at the University of South Australia said.

The company is working hard to secure a supply chain and begin distributing pandemic drones worldwide.

Of course, it is difficult to ignore the repercussions on privacy that such technology might have. A world whereas drones monitor our daily movements from above is as unsettling as it gets.

Pictures of a homemade picnic table for squirrels are going viral on social media, and now, everybody is making them!

The craze started after 43-year-old plumber Rick Kalinowski posted photographs and a video of a tiny table he made for the squirrels visiting his yard during the coronavirus quarantine. The table is attached to the garden fence and has two benches just in case some sociable squirrels want to have a lunch party!

“I built the picnic bench and mounted it outside my living room window on the fence so I can watch the squirrels eat while I have my coffee every morning,” explained Kalinowski. “I wake up at sunrise and have done [so] for years, just to feed the squirrels and fill the bird feeders. I make my coffee, put on the morning news and watch everyone eat.”

“I buy a variety of nuts and seeds for the squirrels along with fresh-cut fruit; it brings me happiness especially during these uncertain times,” he added. “The morning I made the video, the squirrels just looked so happy and cute eating.”

The images of squirrels munching on nuts and seeds at their new table inspired many other people in lockdown to put together their own squirrel-feeding environments in a bid to conquer boredom and help wildlife during this difficult time.

UPDATE: Dog and Cat Meat Are Now Banned in Shenzhen, China

UPDATE: Dog and Cat Meat Are Now Banned in Shenzhen, China

In a historic step forward for animal welfare and human health, Shenzhen has officially become the first city in China to ban the sale and consumption of dogs and cats.

This encouraging legislation, which will go into effect on May 1, follows China’s ban on the sale and consumption of wild animals, which passed amid the coronavirus pandemic after a clear link was established between the origin of COVID-19 and a Wuhan seafood market that sold a menagerie of exotic species. Shenzhen’s dog and cat meat ban will extend to restaurants, shops and markets.

“Dogs and cats as pets have established a much closer relationship with humans than all other animals,” said an order posted by Shenzhen’s city government, “and banning the consumption of dogs and cats and other pets is common practice in developed countries and in Hong Kong and Taiwan. This ban also responds to the demand and spirit of human civilization.”

Despite the practice of eating dogs and cats being relatively uncommon – a majority of Chinese citizens never have nor want to partake in consuming companion animal meat – millions of dogs and cats are slaughtered every year in China. That number could drop dramatically if other cities follow the path now pioneered by Shenzhen.

Thank you to the over 40,000 supporters who signed the petition to urge Shenzhen to adopt this new policy and the over 170,000 who have signed to end China’s dog and cat meat trade for good — as well as the countless animal activists working toward this around the world. Thank you especially to the government of Shenzhen, and every Chinese citizen who has opposed the dog and cat meat trade.

If you haven’t signed yet, add your voice to help save millions of dogs and cats from needlessly suffering a torturous death in China’s meat trade.

PETITION: Immediately Shut Down All Live Animal ‘Wet’ Markets in New York

ladyfreethinker.org

PETITION TARGETS: NY State Health Commissioner Howard A. Zucker, M.D., J.D.; NYC Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot; and NY Governor Andrew Cuomo New York state should lead the world by example. How? By immediately closing down and permanently banning all cruel and dangerous live animal “wet” markets. New York is the epicenter for the global COVID-19 pandemic, and just like the wet markets in China that gave birth to the crisis, more than 80 dangerous live animal markets are operating today in New York City alone, despite the New York State of Pause Executive Order. Soaked wet with blood, guts, feces, and other bodily fluids and parts, these markets are ideal environments for the incubation and spreading of zoonotic diseases, as a mix of animals are jam-packed into tight cages awaiting slaughter. NYC is particularly susceptible to a new, even more uncontainable virus spreading through its population of over 8 million people, as all residents live in relatively close quarters. As live animal wet markets remain open, public health and safety are at risk. In addition to the current uncontained COVID virus, new variants of COVID could emerge, reinfecting humans and causing a global viral pandemic relapse. Such introductions could be more deadly, and plague even more people globally. The facts are clear: live animal markets — whether in Wuhan, China or on the streets of New York — are breeding grounds for deadly zoonotic diseases that then become communicable human-to-human viruses. The government must immediately shut them all down in the interest of public health and safety. Sign this petition urging lawmakers to do everything in their power to shut down all live animal markets in the state of New York.
