A panic-free ‘I can’t believe the holidays are here’ gift shipping guide | WPMT FOX43

Posted 1:02 PM, November 20, 2019, by FOX43 Newsroom

WASHINGTON — We don’t want you to stress, but we are stressing to you that you need to get familiar with these holiday shipping deadlines if you want your gifts to friends, family and others to arrive by December 25.

What once we knew as busy days for the United States Postal Service is now essentially a thing of the past. These days the USPS now experiences its busiest time about two weeks before Christmas, beginning on December 9. The busiest part of that time for mailing, shipping and deliveries you ask? That is said to be December 16 – 22.

So be sure to heed these deadlines and be kind to your delivery drivers. They are working hard this holiday season to make sure your gifts get to where they need to be this time of year.

As of Nov. 19, we’re still waiting on Amazon to release its shipping and order deadlines to ensure gifts will arrive by Christmas. Those dates are set to be released Dec. 1. So keep checking back here for updates.

Online shipments

USPS offers options to get your shipments started online, or to complete the entire process from home depending on your situation. Dec. 16 is expected to be the USPS’ busiest day for online shipments with millions of customer visits expected. Hundreds of thousands of packages are expected to be shipped using the USPS Click-N-Ship feature, so get started early. Free next-day package pickup is possible.

New stamped package drop off guidelines for USPS

Click-N-Ship customers will not be affected by new changes to how stamped packaged are handled.

The USPS is citing safety reasons and says that as of October, USPS customers can no longer drop off boxes that have postal stamps on them if they are either over 1/2-inch thick or weigh more than 10 ounces, or a combination of both. These drop off scenarios include placing these items in blue USPS collection boxes, putting them in building mail chutes or in post office mail slots.

Customers must instead go in person to the post office counter and speak with a postal worker to drop off the item or use one of the self-service kiosks that the USPS offers in post offices.

If customers don’t abide by these new stamped package drop off rules, their items could be returned to sender, possibly causing your packages to arrive late.

If you’re planning to head down to the post office to get your gifts out, USPS listed the following shipping deadlines on its website.

USPS says, for holiday cards and gifts for holidays like Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas “or other holiday traditions,” your recommended domestic, international and military shipping deadlines are as follows:

– For service via First-Class mail you need to get your items shipping out by Dec. 20.

– For service via Priority Mail, you’ll have an extra day according to USPS: Dec. 21.

– For service via Priority Mail Express, get those items out by Dec. 23.

– But be prepared when choosing service via USPS Retail Ground. Make sure you get to the post office early as this service calls for items to be shipped out by Dec. 14.

– For Alaska and Hawaii, the dates are a bit different. Items going First Class need to be out by Dec. 18 (Alaska) and Dec. 19 (Hawaii).

– For Priority Mail service, get your items out by Dec. 19 (Alaska and Hawaii).

– For Priority Mail Express Service, get over to the post office by Dec. 21 (Alaska and Hawaii).

For Military recipients, the key USPS dates are as follows:

PO/FPO/DPO (only for ZIP code 093), if you’re choosing Priority Mail and First-Class service, get your items shipped out by Dec. 9.

APO/FPO/DPO (for all other ZIP codes), if you’re choosing Priority Mail and First-Class service, get your items shipped out by Dec. 11.

USPS Retail Ground service: Dec. 14

APO/FPO/DPO (except ZIP Code 093) USPS Priority Mail Express service: Dec. 18

First-Class Mail service (including greeting cards): Dec. 20

First-class packages (up to 15.99 ounces): Dec. 20

Priority Mail service: Dec. 21

Priority Mail Express service: Dec. 23

What about UPS?

The first rule is to not confuse UPS with USPS, it happens more than you might think.

UPS has listed the shipping deadlines on its website as well.

– UPS is suspending their “UPS Service Guarantee” on Dec. 2. This means that all UPS Ground shipments, including those to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico will have the guarantee suspended if they are picked up or scheduled for pick up between Dec. 2 – 24.

– UPS also says that the last day to ship some packages using UPS Ground service will be Dec. 13. That is if you want the package to arrive by Dec. 24.

– Dec. 23 will be your last day to ship via UPS Next Day Air if you want your package to arrive by Dec. 24, and you can expect this late planning to cost you a pretty penny. That also goes for UPS’s Christmas Eve Limited service, which you’ll need to prearrange by Thursday, Dec. 19.

UPS will not have pickup or delivery service available on Dec. 25. If you do need to contact UPS Express Critical service for more details you can do so by calling 1-800-714-8779 or visit upsexpresscritical.com.

Choosing to use FedEx?

Here are the important dates that you need to stick to if you want those important packages to arrive by Dec. 25.

For shipments made within the U.S. to destinations within the U.S. here are the FedEx shipping method options along with the dates you need to ship by:

– FedEx SmartPost: Dec. 9

– FedEx Home Delivery: Dec. 16

– FedEx Ground: Dec. 16

– FedEx Express Saver: Dec. 19

– FedEx 2Day: Dec. 20

– FedEx 2Day A.M: Dec. 20

– FedEx Standard Overnight: Dec. 23

– FedEx Priority Overnight: Dec. 23

– FedEx First Overnight: Dec. 23

– FedEx SameDay: Dec. 25

– FedEx SameDay City Priority: Dec. 25

– FedEx SameDay City Direct: Dec. 25

With a little planning and scheduling you should be able to have one less thing to stress about this holiday season.

PETITION: Help stop the sadistic ‘Fire Bull’ festival in Soria

secure.peta.org.uk

In Medinaceli, a picturesque town in the province of Soria, a “tradition” called Toro Júbilo brings shame on Spain.

Image: “Toro Jubilo 2011 – Medinaceli – PACMA” by PACMA Fotos / CC by 2.0

On the second weekend in November, balls of pitch (a sticky black substance made from tar or turpentine) will once again be stuck onto the horns of a bull and set on fire. The burning bull is called Toro de Fuego (literally “bull on fire”).

The bull is then released onto the streets and can do nothing but run around in pain. The bull often smashes into walls in an attempt to douse the fire. The agony the bull must suffer is unimaginable. These fiery balls can burn for hours, and they burn the bull’s horns, body and eyes and cause tremendous stress – all while spectators cheer and run around the victim.

This distressing video from PACMA shows the full horror:

Smoked Salmon Sold in 23 States Recalled Over Botulism Fears

Olivia Rosane

Salmon lovers in more than 20 states had better check their refrigerators.

“Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled,” the recall notice said.

The Maine-based company is recalling the salmon because it could become contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes botulism. Botulism occurs because the bacteria make spores that help them survive, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explained.

“The spores usually do not cause people to become sick, even when they’re eaten. But under certain conditions, these spores can grow and make one of the most lethal toxins known,” the CDC said.

Those conditions include low oxygen, low acid, low sugar, a certain temperature range, a certain amount of water and low salt. It seems like a combination of the last three is what caused the potential problem with the salmon, as the recall notice explained:

The recall was initiated because the product’s water phase salt (WPS) tested below 3.5%. This was discovered upon re-review of laboratory certificates, which were found to have incorrectly reported WPS levels. Labeling instructions state to keep refrigerated at or below 38ºF and that the product may be frozen. Because the WPS is under 3.5% the product must remain frozen until ready to consume. Product stored in the refrigerator after thawing has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum.

Water phase salt (WPS) measures the amount of salt relative to moisture in the fish, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control. Salt helps to keep moisture out of the fish, which reduces bacteria growth.

“The combination of refrigeration temperatures and prescribed salt levels offer a high degree of assurance that bacterial growth will be retarded,” the centre explained.

Mill Stream Corp. said it froze the salmon before distribution, but retailers may have thawed it before selling it.

“Consumers who purchased the product frozen are advised to keep it frozen until ready to use and thaw under refrigeration immediately before use,” the recall notice advised. “If a consumer has refrigerated product subject to the recall, they should dispose of it immediately even if it does not look or smell spoiled.”

The recalled salmon was sold between March 6 and Sept. 17, 2019 in whole salmon side, two pound, one pound, eight ounce and four ounce vacuum-sealed packages. The packages had the following lot numbers on the back: 7049, 7050, 7051, 7052, 7054, 7056, 7058, 7060, 7062 and 7066.

It was sold and distributed wholesale, online and to retail stores in Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Utah, Iowa, Tennessee, Minnesota, Colorado, Florida, Arizona, Wisconsin, Washington, Georgia, Illinois, Virginia, Michigan and Texas, Newsweek reported.

The symptoms of botulism include weakness, dizziness, double vision and difficulty speaking or swallowing, the FDA said. According to the CDC, botulism can ultimately cause difficulty breathing, paralysis and even death. No one has been sickened by the salmon to date, but anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention.

Around 200 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with botulism every year, Newsweek reported. Most have to be hospitalized, but, if they receive proper medical attention, fewer than five in 100 patients die from the disease.

Rep. Lowey Reintroduces Bill To Ban Traps In Refuges

Exposing the Big Game

  NOV 17, 2019

New York Congresswoman Nita Lowey has reintroduced a bill that would prohibit body-gripping traps in the National Wildlife Refuge system.

Lowey, Democratic chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, reintroduced the Refuge From Cruel Trapping Act Friday, that would ban from public land traps where animal endure hours or even days of pain. Lowey says that, each year, thousands of bobcats, otters, foxes, beavers and other wild animals are trapped in this manner across the nation’s refuges. She says more than 50 percent of the 566 refuges allow trapping. Steel-jaw leghold traps; conibear traps: and neck snares would be banned if the measure is enacted. Lowey says it’s time to restore the true meaning of “refuge” to the National Wildlife Refuge system

Company Announcement

Go Raw, LLC, of Cottonwood Utah is recalling its 2lb. frozen bags of “Quest Beef Cat Food” because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Take Action to Protect the Endangered Species Act

Mexican gray wolf pup over the summer, the Trump administration unveiled its final changes to the rules that implement the Endangered Species Act (ESA) — a series of disastrous regulatory changes best characterized as an “Extinction Plan”. The rule rollbacks represent a fundamental attack on this cornerstone of conservation law, making it harder to protect wildlife from multiple threats, including habitat loss and those posed by climate change.

In an effort to fight this latest step to cripple the nation’s best tool for helping to prevent extinction, members of the House and Senate introduced “Protect America’s Wildlife and Fish in Need of Protection Act of 2019” or the “PAW and FIN Act of 2019” legislation aimed to repeal all three final rule changes to the ESA.

Given that science has concluded that we have entered an unprecedented period of human-caused Sixth Mass extinction, we need to make every effort to help imperiled species heal and flourish.

Ask your Congressional representatives to support the PAW and FIN Conservation Act of 2019 (H.B. 4348 and S. 2491) to protect the world’s “gold standard” for conservation and protection of imperiled species.

Dear [Decision Maker],
As a lifelong supporter of the Endangered Species Act and someone who cares deeply for our nation’s wildlife, I am writing to request that you oppose legislation taking aim at the ESA – the world’s “gold standard” for conservation and protection of imperiled species.

Meet Narwhal: The ‘Unicorn’ Puppy With A Tail On His Face

Meet Narwhal: The ‘Unicorn’ Puppy With A Tail On His Face
To help other special needs dogs like Narwhal, you can make a donation to Mac’s Mission.

All dogs are perfect — but a 10-week-old golden retriever named Narwhal is extra special.

The puppy has an adorable “unicorn” tail growing out of his forehead.
Narwhal the magical unicorn puppy with an extra tail
Mac’s Mission

Last week, Narwhal was found outside in the freezing cold along with another dog. Narwhal’s foster mom, Rochelle Steffen, founder of Mac’s Mission in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, stepped up to help the “different” puppy as soon as she heard about him.

“We were tagged in a social media request for help because he was special and had been dumped,” Steffen told The Dodo. “All my friends and fellow rescuers know I love the hard cases.”

Mac’s Mission

The moment Steffen met Narwhal, it was love at first sight: “I melted,” Steffen said. “I literally smiled so big because he lights up the entire room with how happy he is. His butt tail never stops wagging — too bad his face tail doesn’t wag!”

Narwhal’s extra tail is a rare birth defect, a third of the size of his regular tail. X-rays show the tail to be made of skin and fur, and otherwise not connected to anything. “It just kind of hangs down like a lock of hair like Superman,” Steffen said.

Besides a case of worms that can be treated with medication, Narwhal is completely healthy. And his special tail is staying — for the time being. “At this point, there is no medical reason to remove it and it does not bother him,” Steffen said. “He has no idea he’s different.”

The carefree pup is currently living it up at Steffen’s house and loves to be held and give kisses.

“He loves humans and he loves to romp around with the other dogs,” Steffen said. “He is very partial to the adult dog that we rescued him with and another Chihuahua mix dog named Ash. They play in a big giant pile!”

In a few months, Narwhal will start his search for a forever home. But for now, Steffen is watching him grow and making sure his extra tail does not get in the way of him living life to the fullest.

And the magical unicorn puppy couldn’t be happier.

Sign Petition: At This Lab, They Forced Monkeys to Dangle by the Neck from Metal Tongs

by: Care2 Team
recipient: German Bundestag, City of Hamburg

The Laboratory of Pharmacology and Toxicology (LPT) is one of Germany’s largest private laboratories. The firm, which employs nearly 200 people, has been thrown in the spotlight for a very dark reason.

LPT’s main focus is toxicity testing. These tests involve exposing animals to potentially dangerous chemicals or drugs at increasingly higher amounts in order to determine the safe dosage for humans. Toxicity testing on animals in abhorrent in and of itself, but what this lab does to their animals beyond that testing is so horrific it would make Hannibal Lecter cry.

Undercover video taken by animal welfare activists reveals that the employees at the lab not only poisoned their animals for toxicity tests but abused them as well. Workers reportedly force fed capsules to beagles by shoving metal pipes down their throats. The harsh treatment left many of the dogs bleeding. Undercover footage shows many of the dogs in blood stained pens and wallowing in their own feces.

Cats were given chemical injections up to 13 times a day by people who had no training to do so.

But worst of all was the treatment reserved for macaque monkeys. Now released video shows lab workers grabbing the monkeys by the neck with metal clasps. The animals dangle by their collars as the workers try to lock them into another metal clasp on a fixed pedestal. Once connected, they are forced to stand for hours at a time while they endure whatever God awful experiments the lab has been contracted to do.

The images are shocking and show treatment that breaches EU animal welfare laws.

Now that LPT has been exposed for what it really is – a torture chamber for helpless animals – whistleblowers from the lab have come forward with even more distressing news. They say that many of the tests performed on the animals are actually scientifically useless because the lab falsified their results.

That means these animals were not just tortured but they were tortured for absolutely no reason. There are new, non-animal testing methods that are just as accurate. Any company wishing to introduce new chemicals or drugs to the market now a days should be using these methodologies, not antiquated ones that abuse and kill animals.

LPT should be shut down for breaking animal welfare laws, falsifying lab tests and killing innocent animals, and management should be held accountable.

Sign the petition and demand that the the German government cancel LPT’s license and charge them with fraud and animal cruelty.

Next week’s Arctic blast will be so cold, forecasters expect it to break 170 records across US

The temperature drop will be a three-day process as a cold front charges across central eastern U.S. High temperatures on Monday maybe stuck in the teens and twenties in the Midwest. Snow may also be in the forecast for portions of the eastern and even southern U.S. This week’s cold snap is only an appetizer compared with the main Arctic blast that’s coming next week meteorologists said. Texas police ask public for help after veteran’s service dog stolen

Melissa Leon

Police in Texas are asking for the public’s help after a local veteran’s service dog was stolen last month.

Someone took
Rosalyn, a 2-year-old mastiff, from Emmanuel Bernadin’s home after
breaking in on Oct. 19, according to the Arlington Police Department.

Roslyn, or Roz for short, is Bernadin’s service animal and medical alert dog, police said.

The perpetrator also stole “several other items,” the department said. But Bernadin told Fox 4 News he just wants his companion back.

“She’s the sweetest thing,” he said. “The days are just really hard without her.”

VETERAN SAVES DOG IN AFGHANISTAN WAR ZONE, SNEAKS HIM HOME TO SAFETY

Arlington Police Lt. Chris Cook said there are no suspects or witnesses at this time.

“People
don’t just steal dogs,” he told Fox 4. “It’s just not a common theme,
so we’re kind of baffled as to who would think in their right mind,
‘We’re not only going to take your property, but we’re going to steal
your dog.'”

Police are asking anyone who might have information to
call the Arlington Police Department at 817-459-6482 or leave an
anonymous tip with Tarrant County Crime Stoppers at 817-469-8477.

HOW TO FIND YOUR LOST DOG, ACCORDING TO A PET DETECTIVE

Bernadin, an Iraq War veteran, told Fox 4 he was with a friend when he got a call from a neighbor telling him his sliding glass door was open.

He went home and found Roz was gone. Jewelry and electronics were also stolen, he said.

“I deal with a lot of night terrors,” Bernadin told Fox 4. “It’s very hard
to turn off the conditions of war, and Roz is there to wake me up at
times when I shouldn’t be alone by myself asleep.”

The veteran said he enlisted in the Navy in 2007 and served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, medically retiring after his second tour.

Venomous snakes are a threat not only to humans, but to pet dogs and cats as well; an estimated 300,000 dogs and cats are bitten by venomous snakes each year in the United States.  The bites from these venomous snakes can cause severe injury and death to companion animals so pet owners living in regions that are home to venomous snakes often opt to get their pets vaccinated with the controversial* rattlesnake vaccine.  The downside to these anti-venom vaccines, as well as emergency medical treatment for humans and pets who are bitten, is that the vaccines need to be tested on lab animals. But that may soon change.

Animal testing may no longer be required to assess a group of deadly neurotoxins.  That is because a new technique just developed could replace conventional methods of testing paralytic neurotoxins, which requires euthanasia of the test subjects.  Testing of paralytic neurotoxins is…

Sign Petition: These Horses Made Their Owners Millions, Then They Sent Them to the Slaughterhouse

by: Care2 Team
recipient: Australian Department of Agriculture, Parliament of Australia

Sunny Fame, Only Money, Rapid Feet are the names of just some of the thoroughbred racehorses that have been killed in Australian slaughterhouses this year. These horses were once fierce competitors on the race track, but once their owners decided they have outlived their use, they were shipped out to slaughter.

The racehorses are then butchered for human consumption or turned into pet food.

This is happening, despite the practice being against the rules laid out by the sport’s regulatory body Racing NSW which states that all retired racehorses should be rehomed.

A recent expose has uncovered that these horses are being killed on a massive scale with one New South Wales abattoir killing 300 racehorses in just 22 days. The horses are not only dying but suffering. Undercover video shows that the thoroughbreds were teased, beaten and abused before ever being killed.

Perhaps what is most disturbing, is the fact the Racing NSW knew that it was going on for more than a year and did nothing.

The fact that possibly thousands of horses are being slaughtered per year, despite regulatory agency prohibitions proves that these self-imposed industry “slaughter bans” are toothless. Without real government legislation to ensure that racehorses aren’t sent to the knackery, racehorse owners and breeders have no real incentive to dispose of the horses the way they see fit.

The lack of federal regulations on killing racehorses means that Racing NSW’s rule will likely not protect thoroughbreds from being sent to the knackery. The only way to do so is for the federal government to pass a ban on the practice altogether.

Australia has a responsibility to protect its horses from abuse and murder. Currently, that is not happening. But we can change that. Please add your name to the list and ask the Australian government to ban the slaughter of racing horses.
