PETITION: Justice for Emaciated Elderly Elephant Dying from Extreme Torture

ladyfreethinker.org

PETITION TARGET: Sri Lanka’s Minister of Tourism Development, John Amaratunga

A starved, overworked and dispirited 70-year-old elephant named Tikiri has died after decades in chains.

Last month, Tikiri collapsed and lay helpless in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Her emaciated body could no longer support her brutal work schedule, which involved walking for hours at a time with her legs shackled in chains in the annual Perahera Festival. And now, she has succumbed to a lifetime of abuse.

When working, her body was hidden underneath an elegant costume and her face covered by a mask. This way, nobody could see her bony body and desperate eyes as she was forced to walk night after night in a loud, crowded ceremony.

“She is one of the 60 elephants who must work in the service of the Perahera Festival in Sri Lanka this year. Tikiri joins in the parade early every evening until late at night every night for ten consecutive nights, amidst the noise, the fireworks, and smoke,” wrote Lek Chailert, founder of Save Elephant Foundation, in a Facebook post.

Amidst massive public outcry, Tikiri was removed from her remaining festival duties.

Tourism and wildlife minister Amaratunga said in a statement, “Considering what has transpired, I have ordered officials to initiate an inquiry and ascertain how and why an elephant in such poor health was used in the perehara (pageant) and to take necessary action against those responsible.”

But Tikiri was not alone. Hundreds of elephants in Sri Lanka are enslaved and forced to work for their entire lifetimes. In Southeast Asia, approximately 3,000 elephants are imprisoned; many face beatings and other violent abuse.

We must speak out to save elephants like Tikiri from a life of neglect and abuse.

Sign this petition urging Minister of Tourism Development Amaratunga to stop forcing elephants to work in parades for human entertainment, so no more innocent animals suffer and die as slaves like Tikiri did.

Potent Neurotoxin Added to Popular Spice

Chemical Free Life

So it turns out there is something you can add to the popular spice turmeric to make it bright yellow–something that consumers seem to be big on. The problem is, the ‘something’ you add is lead–a potent neurotoxin that is dangerous at any level due to its link with brain and heart disease and cognitive damage.

Results from a new study reveal that turmeric — a commonly used spice for food and celebratory body paints and often sold as a healing agent and health booster– is sometimes adulterated with a lead-laced chemical compound in Bangladesh, one of the world’s predominant turmeric-growing regions.

Are you ingesting adulterated turmeric?

If you live in Bangladesh there is an increased likelihood you are ingesting turmeric that is adulterated with lead. (At last testing, 30 percent of pregnant women in the area had elevated lead levels in their blood.)

If you live outside Bangladesh…

Sign the Petition Stop Sending U.S. Military Dogs to Jordan for them to Starve and Abuse

change.org
Oli P started this petition to Department of Justice

The United States keeps sending our military bomb sniffing Dogs to the country of Jordan, where a Federal investigation revealed are so greatly starved and neglected, that many died, and those who don’t barely survive.

The federal investigation recommendation to the United States Department of Justice was to stop sending dogs until there was a sustainability plan put in place, but the Department of Justice has not taken action on this recommendation.

See additional information about the investigation Here.

Despite spending “millions of dollars” training and dispatching the dogs, State Department officials failed to ensure their health and welfare, said the report, which was launched after a hotline complaint about the dogs’ treatment.

According to the report, the State Department’s loose regulation and lack of concrete policies were a big factor in the dogs’ mistreatment.

The State Department couldn’t provide investigators detailed information for the dogs in other partner countries besides Jordan, and there often aren’t any written agreements with the countries outlining how to care for the dogs.

We are asking the United States Department Of Justice to:

Stop sending additional dogs to Jordan until policies, a plan and assurances are put into place to properly monitor and ensure the well-being of those military dogs.
Investigate and provide investigators detailed information about the dogs and their well-being in the other partner countries besides Jordan.

Let’s ensure the protection and care of the U.S. military dogs that work hard and risk their lives every day, serving our and our partner countries.
