The Yulin Dog Meat Festival is fast approaching. We must put pressure on Chinese officials to enact effective changes in procedure and law enforcement to stop this horrific event from taking place once and for all.

The United States’ position on the dog and cat meat trade, and the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in particular, is clear and unequivocal: dogs and cats should not be killed for the consumption of their meat. In December 2018, the United States banned the dog and cat meat trade. Inroads into the banning of this cruel and senseless commerce have also been made in parts Asia.

Taiwan recently took the monumental step of banning both the consumption of dog and cat meat and the overall trade in such meat. Significantly, Taiwan is also home to an international alliance that is championing the push to ensure all Asian countries outlaw these senseless and cruel practices in the region. Indeed, Hanoi, Vietnam is also taking action, progressively banning the trade of dog and cat meat in its central districts.

Although these measures and efforts are important, we must continue to press China to stop the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. We proudly stand with the millions of people across the globe and in China, who wish to see this festival come to an end. The Chinese government would be wise to join our efforts and institute a complete ban of the dog and cat meat trade.

The Dog Meat Festival in Yulin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China dates back to 2009-2010, when it was launched by dog meat traders as a commercial enterprise to boost flagging sales. We find it completely outrageous that even though the Yulin city government withdrew as a sponsor of the Dog Meat Festival, Yulin authorities and the Chinese government failed to take any meaningful action to bring an end to this festival. The event celebrates the wholesale torture of dogs and is an abhorrent display of animal cruelty.

During this barbaric festival, dogs are burnt, skinned, or boiled alive, have their paws cleaved off while conscious, and are staked to the ground and beaten to death. No one can see these images and walk away unaffected. Based on the work of animal activist groups, the number of dogs slaughtered at the festival has be reduced, but still far too many are suffering barbaric torture and death. In fact, even with the decrease of dogs slaughtered at the Yulin festival, there are still about 10 million dogs killed annually in China for the dog meat trade. It is absolutely shameful that this festival and others like it still continue.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank the countless activists who continue their tireless fight every single day in order to save and protect the voiceless and powerless animals across the globe. The Vanderpump Dog Foundation is on the ground 365 days a year with our two shelters and almost 500 dogs saved from the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. We see first hand the progress and are hopeful that we will be able to end the celebration of consuming our best friends. We must continue to shed light on the horrific treatment of the many animals that fall prey to China’s dog meat trade.

Our efforts transcend cultural differences, party lines, state borders, and political stances. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or a Democrat, this cause must be everyone’s cause. With the might of the American government behind us, we can continue to put pressure on Chinese officials to enact much needed changes. Many humane courses of action are already available throughout China. With regular monitoring and enforcement, we hope that one day soon will finally see the elimination of the cruel Yulin Dog Meat Festival.

The Peacock mantis shrimp is a brightly colored crustacean that lives on Indo-Pacific coral reefs and associated sand flats. Its common name reflects the brilliant greens and blues that adorn the male’s exoskeleton (shell).

Females are also brightly colored but are mostly red. Peacock mantis shrimp are powerful hunters, feeding on hard-shelled invertebrates of all kinds and even some fishes. They are well known for the extremely fast punching motion that they do with their front appendages to kill and break apart their prey. This punch is one of the fastest movements in the animal kingdom and is strong enough to break through an aquarium’s glass wall. Peacock mantis shrimp use this behavior to break open snails and other mollusks and to completely dismember crabs, shrimps, and other crustaceans.

Peacock mantis shrimp are known to have extremely complex eyes, and can see in more wavelengths of color than even mammals. Under special lights/cameras, scientists have demonstrated that the already colorful exoskeletons of this species are actually even more elaborate when viewed by each other. Peacock mantis shrimp dig U-shaped burrows in the sand near the reef’s edge from which they venture out to hunt and to attract mates. They reproduce via internal fertilization, and after laying the eggs, the females carry them around on their front appendages until they hatch, protecting them and keeping them clean. Some peacock mantis shrimp may form monogamous pair bonds.

Peacock mantis shrimp are one of the largest and most colorful species of mantis shrimp and are therefore desirable for the private aquarium industry. However, individuals will often eat many of the other fishes and invertebrates in a tank, so some aquarists actively avoid this species. There is also a small market for eating peacock mantis shrimp in some Asian countries. Scientists do not have sufficient data to determine this species’ population trends, but as residents on coral reefs, human induced changes to this vulnerable ecosystem may also threaten the peacock mantis shrimp and other species.

Sign Petition: Stop Animal Abusers From Getting Pets Through Craigslist!

thepetitionsite.com

A man was recently arrested for acquiring an estimated twelve cats and kittens through Craigslist to brutally torture and kill them. Sadly, we hear about similar cases time and time again in the news.

In 2015, a man was arrested for tying a dog’s legs together, muzzling her and setting her on fire while she was still alive. The man got the dog from Craigslist.

In 2013, a man was charged with 22 counts of animal cruelty for torturing kittens he got off of Craigslist. The man told police he had a “cat room” where he would torture the cats and discard their carcasses.

In this most recent case, the alleged animal abuser stomped on the heads of cats and strangled them. After the cats died, he dismembered some of them, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Craigslist provides an avenue for animal abusers to easily obtain animals with little risk of detection. Abusers can use fake email addresses and phone numbers to get animals from unsuspecting pet owners. Unlike reputable shelters and rescues, pet owners looking to find a new home for their animal might not know the right questions to ask.

Shelters and rescues often use application forms, reference checks and home inspections to ensure their pets are going to a safe home.

Craigslist states in its policy that pet sales are prohibited but specifies that “re-homing with small adoption fee ok”. Recent cases show us that Craigslist’s policy is not enough to protect innocent animals from getting into the hands of depraved animal abusers. There is no clear option for monitoring the transfer of pets to ensure that the animals are only going to safe homes.

Therefore, we need to protect our beloved pets by preventing animal abusers from being able to simply scroll online to find new victims. Craigslist needs to prohibit all ads giving away pets- regardless of whether the seller is charging a fee or not.

Petition: Stop the Yulin Festival

change.org
Vickie May started this petition to Chinese Government and 1 other

Every year around this time people gather in Yulin, a city in China, to celebrate the Yulin festival. What is the Yulin festival? It’s a “festival” held in Yulin where people kidnap pet dogs and strays and shove them into crates a few days before the actual festival starts. Then when the festival starts they beat them to death, boil them alive, skin them alive, bend their limbs back till they snap, electrocute them till they can’t move and leave them to die, hack their snouts off with hooks and even set them on fire alive. They do a lot more than this FOR FUN. They don’t use the fur they skin or the meat. They do this for leisure and each year 10-15 thousand dogs are tourted and killed because of this festival.20 million dogs are killed in China each year

Dogs are consumed in China yes, and some would say that’s wrong too, but I want to focus on the fact that these dogs are put through hours of torturous pain and then eventually killed. They don’t use the meat and they don’t gain anything but pleasure from the festival. So please sign and help us bring the festival to an end!
