Breaking! Anger Mounts As Iceland Sets Quota For Commercial Whaling At 426 Whales Annually; This Must End! – World Animal News

By Karen Lane –
February 22, 2019

The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) strongly opposes Iceland’s decision Tuesday to establish a base whaling quota of 209 fin whales and 217 minke whales annually from 2019 to 2023. Due to this misguided regulation, Iceland’s image as a nature tourism destination could face irreparable damage.
Iceland’s Minister of Fisheries Kristján Þór Júlíusson based his decision, in part, on a macroeconomic review of Icelandic whaling released by the University of Iceland’s Institute of Economics in late January 2019. This review is an unsound document that does not provide a complete or accurate assessment of the impacts of whaling on Iceland’s economy, image and fisheries.
Iceland’s base whaling quota remains unchanged from last year, but it is still unclear if a carryover quota will increase the overall quota moving forward.
“Minister Júlíusson has failed not only Iceland’s whales but also the people of Iceland in making this decision,” said Susan Millward, AWI’s Marine Animal Program Director in a statement. “The deeply flawed macroeconomic review of whaling did not consider the welfare implications of whaling, nor did it accurately portray the negative impacts whaling has had on Iceland’s image and economy.”
Icelandic whaling quotas are not approved by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), the only appropriate international organization responsible for the conservation and management of whales. Furthermore, commercial whaling is inherently cruel, unsustainable and impossible to regulate. AWI advocates for an end to commercial whaling, including Iceland’s unprofitable and unnecessary whaling industry.

Breaking! Procter & Gamble Partners With HSI To End Animal Testing For Cosmetics In All Global Beauty Markets By 2023 – World Animal News

By WAN –
February 21, 2019

Today, Procter & Gamble joins the Humane Society International #BeCrueltyFree Campaign, to ban animal testing for cosmetics in all major global beauty markets by 2023.
“We are pleased to partner with the Humane Society International in the quest to end cosmetic animal testing. I’m proud of the passion and expertise our researchers have contributed already to this goal,” Kathy Fish, Chief Research, Development and Innovation Officer of Procter & Gamble said in a statement. “I know they will continue to be a force for good, providing leadership and advocacy to help achieve our shared vision.”
The company also noted that it has “invested more than $420 million over forty years in developing non-animal testing methods.”
The #BeCrueltyFree campaign was launched in 2012 with the aim of extending the European Union’s legal precedent – banning cosmetic animal testing and the sale of newly animal tested cosmetics – to countries where this practice is still allowed or even mandated by law.
P&G’s support for #BeCrueltyFree will include joint education and capacity-building programs for non-animal alternatives, continued development of new animal-free approaches to safety assessment, and advocating for the legislative end of cosmetic animal testing in key global beauty markets.
For over two decades, P&G, HSI, HSUS, and the Humane Society Legislative Fund have collaborated on the development and regulatory uptake of animal-free testing methods. The organizations expect that by bringing their complementary strengths together, they will reach the end goal more quickly. A key focus will be gaining acceptance of new methods by regulators and enrolling many companies and governments globally to adopt cruelty-free public policies and practices.
Dr. Harald Schlatter, P&G Corporate Communications and Animal Welfare Advocacy added: “We’ve invested more than $420 million over forty years in developing non-animal testing methods. Our researchers have led or co-designed at least twenty-five cruelty-free methods that have replaced animal testing of cosmetic products. HSI and the HSUS have been powerful partners in advancing these methods globally.“
“Animal testing of cosmetics not only causes unnecessary animal suffering, but it also represents outdated science. For more than 20 years, we have collaborated with Procter & Gamble to advance the development and regulatory acceptance of non-animal testing approaches, but in order to finally move proposed cosmetics animal testing bans into law in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Chile, South Africa and other influential markets, we need the active support of major industry leaders such as P&G.,” stated Troy Seidle, HSI Vice President for Research & Toxicology. “With the power of P&G’s household brands, I’m confident we can achieve a legislative end to cosmetic animal testing globally within five years.”
P&G’s brands include: Always, Bounty, Charmin, Crest, Dawn, Downy, Febreze, Gain, Gillette, Head & Shoulders, Olay, Oral-B, Pampers, Pantene, Tide, Vicks, and more.
Each move to ban animal testing for cosmetics is an important step forward to ending the cruel and unnecessary practice, everywhere!
In 2018, Social Compassion In Legislation and Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine co-sponsored Senate Bill 1249, the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, with the support of Peace 4 Animals and World Animal News.
The historic legislation signed into law last October will make it unlawful for cosmetic manufacturers to sell any cosmetic in California if the final product or any component of the product was tested on animals after January 1, 2020, with some exceptions for regulatory requirements.

Sign Petition: 50 Starved Polar Bears Came Into Town and Now They May Be Killed

by: Care2 Team
recipient: Russian Officials

The town of Novaya Zemlya has had quite a week: 50 starved polar bears have invaded their small Russian town looking for food! People in the town are both scared and excited. They get to see polar bears up close, which is really cool, but some of them have tried to enter people’s homes. The fear is that, even though polar bears are a protected species, people who feel scared and trapped will act out and kill the animals.

Sign now to make sure Russian officials do everything they can to keep the polar bears safe and humanely remove them from the town!

One particular garbage in the town seems to be the biggest draw for them, so officials may just try to move that. They are also discussing sedating and relocating them, but that would likely be expensive, difficult and very stressful to the bears who just wanted something to eat.

Polar bears have lost so much from climate change. They are born on land but then spend most of their lives in the water or on ice barges, which are melting rapidly. Experts believe the polar bears have invaded the town because their habitat and food (seals) are disappearing due to climate change.

Locals have declared a state of emergency. Now we just need to be sure that they don’t harm the polar bears in trying to get them out of this town.

Please sign on demanding that authorities do not use fatal force to evacuate the polar bears!

Sign Petition: The Sport Of “Coyote Whacking” Is Even More Gruesome Than It Sounds — And It’s Legal!

by: Care2 Team
recipient: Wyoming Legislators

We wish this was a twisted joke. Unfortunately, there really are people who participate in a sport called “Coyote Whacking” and they can continue to legally do so. Wyoming legislators had an opportunity to outlaw it but they didn’t even bother looking at the bill, let alone passing it.

Sign on if you want those legislators to pass a bill outlawing this cruel “sport”.The practice is actually more gruesome than it sounds. People chase coyotes on snowmobiles until they are too tired to run, then they run the coyote over with their snowmobile again and again. It’s truly upsetting to know that there are people who think torturing and murdering an animal in this way is fun.

But it gets worse. After they have tortured and killed these innocent coyotes, they pick the lifeless coyotes up by the tail and slam them against the snow mobile one more time, just to celebrate their own inhumanity. Then, they post smiling photos of themselves to their social media accounts; these people are actually proud of their abusive behavior.

But worst of all is that Wyoming legislators had the chance to outlaw this horrible sport and they literally couldn’t even be bothered to read the bill.

Please sign the petition to tell those legislators that you find this negligence despicible and they must outlaw the practice immediately.

Sign Petition: End the Cruel and Inhumane Trapping and Hunting of Bobcats!

thepetitionsite.com
by: Prairie Protection Colorado
recipient: Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commissioners, Coloradomore

Help us pass a Citizen’s Petition that is asking the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commissioners to ban the trapping and hunting of bobcats throughout Colorado.

Bobcats are mostly hunted for their fur, which is then sold to China and Russia to make high-end fashion items. The rest of the carcass is discarded. Due to Amendment 14, trappers in Colorado are only allowed to use box traps. When trappers catch bobcats, they usually strangle them with “choke poles” or kill them by drowning or standing on their chests to suffocate them. The reason they do this is because they don’t want to get blood on their pelts, “there is less of a mess to clean up,” and “the fur is worth more.” Trappers typically don’t shoot the bobcats because they don’t want a hole in the fur or their traps to get damaged.

As wildlife advocates, we must organize and resist by raising our voices for the bobcats and for Colorado’s rapidly diminishing wildlife communities. We need each and every one of you to help support this ban and one way to do that is to sign this Care2 petition illustrating just how many of us want our wildlife communties to be protected not destroyed.

Join with us and help change these outdated, cruel and inhumane practices during this urgent time when habitat fragmentation is occurring at disastrous rates.

Sign this petition today and please sign up for our newsletters to get more information on how you can help protect Colorado’s wildlife!

For Colorado’s Bobcats!!
