Sign Petition: Reject Trump’s Animal-Hating, Oil-Loving Nom for Interior Secretary

by: Kevin Mathews
recipient: Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats

10,334 SUPPORTERS – 11,000 GOAL

With the departure of Ryan Zinke, President Donald Trump has nominated David Bernhardt, the Interior Department’s deputy secretary, to take over the department entirely. As a career lobbyist for major corporations – the same businesses that often do business with and apply for permits from the Interior, Bernhardt is immediately inviting countless conflicts of interest.

In his time in the government, he’s gone the extra mile to help oil giants drill freely, even if it means giving away public lands or calling back furloughed workers during the shutdown to keep the permit process moving. Bernhardt has also been instrumental in chipping away at endangered species protections so that corporations don’t have to be mindful of vulnerable critters.

Bernhardt faced appropriate scrutiny in the confirmation process for deputy secretary, and he deserves an even more thorough examination before heading the whole department. We call on the Dems to do everything they can to block this confirmation and get a non-lobbyist in this role.

Sign Petition: The Tiger Must Be Saved From Extinction — Here’s One Way to Help

thepetitionsite.com

by: Care2 Team
recipient: U.S. Congress

14,713 SUPPORTERS – 15,000 GOAL

Of the great predators, one of the most endangered is the iconic tiger. With a total wild population of less than 4,000 spread throughout the entire Asian continent, these cats walk a thin tightrope of survival. Tigers aren’t disappearing into thin air, they are being pushed to the edge of extinction by organized crime syndicates, poachers and traffickers that profit off their corpses.

That’s why it is paramount that governments like the United States create strong legislation that works to battle these organizations and the destruction they cause. Enter the Wildlife Conservation and Anti-Trafficking Act of 2019 (H.R.864). The newly introduced legislation would bolster our current anti-trafficking regulations by giving more power to federal agencies to fight poaching and wildlife trafficking.

Additionally, the law — if it passes — would see U.S. Fish and Wildlife agents stationed abroad in high trafficking areas, direct monies to funds specifically mandated to great ape conservation and prosecute traffickers under federal racketeering and anti-organized crime statutes.

When China threatened to lift the ban against using rhino and tiger parts in traditional medicine, conservationists braced themselves for what could have only been a new open season on these incredible animals. Fortunately, China has backed away from their plan — for now. But there are no guarantees that the ban won’t eventually be lifted.

It is now more important than ever to strengthen our nation’s laws against trafficking and that’s why the Wildlife Conservation and Anti-Trafficking Act is so crucial.

Tell the U.S. Congress you support this important bill. Please sign the petition and tell Congress to pass H.R.864 today.more

Sign Petition: Instead of Relocating Them, These Cougar Kittens Are Now Dead

thepetitionsite.com
by: Care2 Team
recipient: Colorado Parks and Wildlife

18,848 SUPPORTERS – 19,000 GOAL

A mother and her three kittens. Those are just some of the casualties of urban sprawl in Colorado.

Since the beginning of the year, Glenwood Springs residents had noticed they weren’t alone in their neck of the woods. Over the past several weeks they had seen a family of mountain lions lurking about, and after one neighborhood dog was killed people began to worry.

That’s when they decided to call (CPW). Perhaps residents thought CPW officials would be able to scare the cougars back to the mountains or relocate them to a more remote area where they wouldn’t pose a threat. Unfortunately, officials had another solution in mind. They trapped the mother and her one-year-old kittens and killed them.

Parks and Wildlife defended their action by saying it was their “only option.” But that simply isn’t the case. Colorado is a vast, mountainous state with wide swaths of unpopulated lands where these mountain lions could have been released to live a long and wild life. Instead, officials decided to take the lives of five pumas — a mother, her three cubs, and another adult.

The land these animals were roaming is theirs not ours and they should not be punished simply for being the predators that nature intended them to be.

Obviously, we must take the safety of Glenwood Springs residents into account but euthanization should have never been an option when they could have easily been relocated. Especially since their location could have been monitored with collars.

It’s too late for the five mountain lions that were killed by CPW but hopefully, it won’t be for the next family of pumas that encroach into a Colorado town. Please sign the petition and demand that Colorado Parks and Wildlife stop using lethal methods to deal with animal nuisances and ask them to use relocation instead.

Sign Petition: These Popular Companies Support a Zoo That Abuses Animals

thepetitionsite.com

If you go to the webpage for the Austin Zoo, you’ll see pictures of bear cubs playing, a tiger playing with a ball in the water and an emu seemingly smiling into the camera. Anyone not in the know might think that the zoo — which has been “helping animals” since 1990 — is a great place for animals to call home. But a recent article about the facility has shone a new light on what goes on behind the bars and enclosures and the suffering their “beloved” animals endure when no one’s looking.

Tales of unethical treatment have long been whispered by zoo employees but it wasn’t until a few animal deaths that workers there finally said they had enough. In an article in the Austin American-Statesman, nearly 24 current and former staff members told reporters that the zoo had, on several occasions, opted to let sick and dying animals suffer.

In one such case, Babs — the zoo’s 33-year-old black bear suddenly fell so ill that she was unable to move. When vets were unable to assist her, zoo officials hid her inside a tarp-lined kennel. Employees tell of having to give her water with a hose and dangling hot dogs from a string to encourage her to eat — she wouldn’t.

Over a six-week period, Babs was allowed to lie in her own waste, often used as a feeding ground for rats that would crawl on her to fight for the scraps in her enclosure.

In another case, in 2010, when Annie, one of the zoo’s patas monkeys, went blind, they decided to separate her for her own good. Alone, she languished for nearly 10 years, suffering a rattlesnake bite and several strokes that progressively rendered her paralyzed. Zoo officials then let her wither away for a decade until she finally died in her caretaker’s arms.

This is not normal procedure and it shows why this zoo is not accredited and their mission of “helping animals” is suspect.

While keeping animals in captivity is already a form of suffering, allowing them to literally suffer goes beyond anything acceptable in animal care.

On its webpage, the Austin Zoo boasts that they have several high profile supporters including multibillion-dollar companies like Marriott, Lowe’s and Whole Foods. One can only imagine that these companies support the zoo because they take them at their word, that they are “helping animals.” But now that these allegations of serious animal abuse and neglect have come to light, Care2 is asking if they really want to continue to give their money to an organization that is not on the up and up.

That’s why we are asking for Marriott, Lowe’s and Whole Foods to cut ties immediately with the Austin Zoo to send a message that this type of treatment towards animals is not OK.

Sign Petition: This Man Dragged His Dog Behind a Truck and Left It for Dead

35,781 SUPPORTERS – 40,000 GOAL

Last month, diners at the Pine Beach Hotel in Yeppoon, Australia witnessed something that made them lose their appetite. While enjoying their meal, a man drove by in a truck trailing a limp dog behind it. The dog had somehow fallen out of the man’s truck bed but the driver did not notice or care and kept moving along.

As the driver roared around the corner, the dog’s collar snapped, leaving it in a pool of blood in the middle of the street. After it gathered its strength, the poor dog even tried to chase after the truck and the man who had abandoned him.

Kind bystanders then jumped in to rescue the poor pooch, rushing him to the vet. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and he died overnight.

Dog owners who allow their dogs to travel in truck beds are playing a risky game. According to the Humane Society of Utah, in the United States alone, over 100,000 dogs die every year by flying out after an accident, falling out accidentally or sliding out the back of an open tailgate.

And in most parts of Australia, it is illegal to allow your dog to travel in the back of an open vehicle with RSPCA Australia advising that people should ensure “their dog’s restraint is long enough to allow him to stand and lie down, but not so long that he could jump or fall over the edge of the moving vehicle.”

The cruel dog owner who dragged and then abandoned his dog clearly didn’t follow these recommendations.

Please sign the petition and tell the Yeppoon Police you support their search for this irresponsible pet owner. Tell them to find him and charge him with animal cruelty.Photo credit: Facebookmore

Sign Petition: These Surprise Seal Pups Must Be Protected!

by: Kelsey B.
recipient: Point Reyes National Seashore rangers

70,527 SUPPORTERS – 75,000 GOAL

During the recent government shutdown, Drake’s Beach in Northern California remained closed to visitors. But what was bad news for beachgoers and nature lovers turned out to be great news for a group of elephant seals!

60 elephant seals decided to take advantage of the empty beach and make the spot their birthing place. During those 35 days of the shutdown, about 35 seal pups were born! The problem is that now that the shutdown is over, officials want to open that beach back up.

Sign the petition if you want the beach to stay closed for good so we can give the seals their natural habitat back!

The spate of births was really quick, magical and adorable, but also very fragile. Normally the seals would have given birth elsewhere but experts are speculating that recent storms have forced them to find new places to do it. It’s critical that we don’t scare, harm or overwhelm the animals. Most of the pups are still nursing with their moms so it’s really important they are given time and space to get their pups ready to venture back into the ocean.

And what better way to give them the space they need than to shut down the beach to humans permanently!

We had a good run, but these seals have reclaimed what is rightfully theirs. Please sign the petition to close the beach for good!

It’s A Con To Talk About The Border-Wall When Trump Admin Gives Out Over 3000 Permanent Resident Cards Per Day; Over 1 Million Per Year, And A Wall Can Be Tunneled Under Anyway

Mining Awareness +

Illegals can tunnel under a wall, but the approximately 1 million per year of legal permanent resident immigrants don’t have to bother to tunnel under. The Trump Admin gave out over 3,000 immigrant legal permanent resident “Green” cards PER DAY in 2017; Over 1.1 Million total in 2017.

To put this in context, Dallas, Texas is the 9th largest city in the United States and has a population of 1,341,075.

Greencards easily turn into citizenship and so the insane numbers of new US citizens per year will continue, or again worsen, if nothing is changed. Each new citizen dilutes democracy, too, because each vote is of less value.

Even if a wall were effective, it is futile with such huge numbers being let in legally. The USA is already filled up with Americans, many of whom have no right to return to their place of origin.

You Think Illegal Aliens Deserve Humane Treatment?

The Lone Cactus

I don’t usually post other people’s stuff…I’ve just never been into doing that. However, this bears repeating…Read on!

Nine hundred teachers just got laid off from the Los Angeles Unified School District. They are $650,000 over their annual budget.
