Rescued Birds Are Helping Veterans Manage PTSD | Care2 Causes

PTSD can be a terrible and insidious health problem and a hard one to treat because of the many layers of trauma that can underpin the condition.

But animal companions, and recently birds, like parrots, have proved to be a powerful source of

joy and wellness for people dealing post traumatic stress. To understand why birds are particularly good companion animals for people with PTSD, it’s first worth learning a bit about the health problem.

What is PTSD?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is usually caused by a significantly traumatic event or prolonged exposure to trauma that may span months to many years. PTSD usually occurs right after the event itself, but in some cases it may show up several months or even years after the catalyst event.

The way PTSD manifests can be different for every person dealing with this condition and can depend on the trauma that person endured. However, common symptoms can include flashbacks or nightmares of the traumatic event itself or stress responses such as pain, sweating, feeling sick and trembling, to name just a few. These may occur as a result of stimuli that “trigger” the memory or may come on without warning.

PTSD is perhaps most widely understood by the general public as a condition effecting combat veterans, whose prolonged exposure to scenes of war and combat have had an impact on their mental wellbeing. However, PTSD can occur among almost all demographics. Women—for example those who have been in an abusive relationship—or children who have undergone prolonged stress or suffered the loss of a parent can also suffer from PTSD

PTSD can manifest through persistent negative self-talk that reinforces the person’s feelings of anguish surrounding the event. It can also lead to a state known as “hyper arousal” which might best be explained in this context as someone always being on edge. This can lead to sufferers having short tempers or being quick to anger or upset. In some extreme cases, PTSD can cause angry or even violent outbursts, though the actual number of PTSD sufferers who are violent is much smaller than media portrayals lead us to believe, and there is surprisingly little evidence to specifically link PTSD with violence.

Other problems that can manifest because of PTSD include an inability to concentrate, a “mental fog” state and an avoidance problem where sufferers will attempt to minimize their negative feelings. This can lead to sufferers not seeking treatment, avoiding responsibilities or stressful situations like employment, or attempting to medicate themselves in a variety of ways. Self-medication can manifest as obsessive behaviors, like over-exercise, through to alcohol and drug use, casual sexual encounters and more.

How is PTSD treated?

It is possible to successfully treat PTSD, but it is among the more complex class of mental health disorders. PTSD is distinct from panic disorders and depression, but the conditions can overlap, meaning that treatment has to take in some or many of these factors.

Treatment often involves therapy of some kind, sometimes underpinned by various medications designed to give the emotional breathing room for that therapy to take effect. These can include:

CBT, where patients learn to challenge negative thought patterns and introduce new thoughts to replace those old systems
eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, where eye movements are used during the recounting of past traumas as a means of helping a patient walk through the trauma while distracted (though exactly why this works isn’t fully understood)
group therapy medications specifically used for PTSD, like paroxetine and sertraline.

However, PTSD sufferers can find it hard to undergo therapy precisely, because it’s difficult to relive or deal with the past trauma that they have struggled with. This is where support animals can be effective.

Support animals don’t magically make PTSD symptoms go away, but they do offer love and support that can anchor people dealing with PTSD. Dogs and other support animals are also good at picking up when their human companions are in distress and lend support without their human needing to specifically communicate their distress, something that PTSD sufferers can find very difficult.

In addition, the very act of having to care for an animal can help bring a focus to the lives of PTSD sufferers that is outside of their own distress, thus helping to break the negative thought patterns or at the very least offering distraction.

Why Birds are so Helpful for People Dealing with PTSD

Some birds, such as ravens and parrots are incredibly intelligent and can learn to understand or even mirror basic language skills. Birds also display some surprisingly “human-like” behaviors, but at the same time have particularized and often demanding needs to which a human companion will have to attend. This creates a new dimension of interactivity for PTSD sufferers.

While there is a lack of specific wide-scale research on birds as animal companions for PTSD sufferers, there is growing anecdotal support for their abilities to help. So much so, in fact, that a number of groups, including Parrots for Patriots, have launched with the specific aim of matching abandoned birds with veterans who may be in need of an animal friend to care for and from whom they can take support. These birds don’t just help PTSD sufferers, but they may be particularly well-served by this scheme.

Below is a video from Serenity Park Sanctuary that demonstrates what a difference various schemes like this can have for veterans and people dealing with PTSD:

It’s worth noting that service birds which help with diagnosed mental health conditions have a complex status under the Americans with Disabilities Act and may not be protected in all spheres like other service animals are. It is important to know your rights, if you are thinking about adopting a rescued bird as a service animal, and the facility from which you are receiving your animal will likely be able to give you all the information you will need.

Video: Undersea Robot Just Delivered 100,000 Baby Corals To Great Barrier Reef – Sea Voice News

seavoicenews.com
by Alex Larson →

Coral reefs around the world are dying off in masses as the seas temperatures continue to grow and the acidity of the oceans rise with it due to climate change. These changes cause the reefs to go through a process known as coral bleaching which happens when warmer water temperatures cause corals to expel the algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues causing the coral to turn completely white.

When a coral bleaches, it is not dead. Corals can survive a bleaching event, but they are under more stress and are subject to mortality.

The worst bleaching event ever recorded happened in 2016 when half the northern Great Barrier Reef died due to mass bleaching due to rising ocean temperatures. In the years spanning 2014-2017, in some areas of the reef temperatures rose as much as 10.8°F (6°C), sometimes lasting as long as eight months.

Unfortunately for the reefs, while all this coral death happened quickly and suddenly, the growth of new coral is at an extremely slow rate as they take hundred and thousands of years to grow back to what they once where and this is not good.

The best solution to save reefs is to prevent future warming of the oceans but researchers are attempting to help regrow some of the reefs that are already dead and they are using some pretty cool technology to assist them.

Researchers at two Australian universities have developed and underwater robot named Larvalbot that is designed to move autonomously along dead or damaged sections of the reef with hundreds of thousands of microscopic baby corals.

“This year represents a big step up for our larval restoration research and the first time we’ve been able to capture coral spawn on a bigger scale using large floating spawn catchers then rearing them into tiny coral larvae in our specially constructed larval pools and settling them on damaged reef areas,” Professor Harrison said whom engineered the robot.

“With further research and refinement, this technique has enormous potential to operate across large areas of reef and multiple sites in a way that hasn’t previously been possible. We’ll be closely monitoring the progress of settled baby corals over coming months and working to refine both the technology and the technique to scale up further in 2019.”

The team recently tested the bot on the outer part of the GBR. along the northeastern coast. The trial run dispersed 100,000 baby specimens that were collected from coral that survived the bleaching event of 2016-2017. This coral was specifically chosen as research as revealed that the coral that survived the mass bleaching actually adapted to become more resilient to heatwaves and rising temperatures.

The hope is the that future versions of the robot will be able to disperse millions fo baby corals to speed up the regrowth process of reefs but the team is still waiting on research to show that the coral will take hold and grow.

“We can’t actually see the results of these experiments until we start to see juvenile corals grow — so, for at least six to nine months,” Harrison said. “What we’ll be doing now is monitoring the reef over the coming months.”

Harrison hopes to eventually develop a fleet of LarvalBots that would be used to repopulate reefs around the world, though he is unsure how much such a project would cost.

While this is a great idea to try and promote growth on reefs that have already been killed, the most important thing we do today is to do everything we can to reduce coral bleaching so the bots are never needed. Due to the size and scale of coral reefs across the planet, it is essentially impossible to regrow all shallow water reefs if bleaching is to continue.

To accomplish this, we must slow the rate of climate change and protect the oceans from warming up.

The Art Of The Deal?

The Lone Cactus

Donald Trump came before the American public the other night with a deal he was proposing for Democrats to re-open the government. On the surface it says a lot…and it shows why he’s the ultimate dealmaker.

Let’s take a quick look at what he said. He wants to get $5.7 billion for the wall…or fence…or added border protection in the form of a barrier along the southern border. That’s been his line in the sand all along. He is giving over 700,000 DACA kids a three year reprieve in hopes Congress can get their problem solved in that time. He’s also giving those that moved to the United States temporarily when natural disasters hit their homeland another three years to live here without the threat of deportation.

He promised $800 million in humanitarian assistance to help those in need along the southern border…most likely those folks in the caravan from…

Hopi Tribe Open Letter/News Release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 11, 2019
Open Letter to Arizona Congressional Leaders
Kykotsmovi, Ariz. – On behalf of the Hopi Tribe, we urge you to work with Congressional leadership to immediately end the partial government shutdown. This shutdown violates the trust obligations of the United States government to our Hopi-Tewa people.

Agencies such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Indian Health Service and other federal agencies that provide critical government services to our Hopi-Tewa people are caught up in unrelated politics over funding for a southern border wall. As the unnecessary and heedless shutdown drags on day to day, the well-being of our Hopi-Tewa people hangs in the balance. It is unconscionable that our people should suffer because of the failure of the Congress and the President to enact an FY2019 appropriation. Trump warns Nancy Pelosi to ‘be careful’ after Democrats signal they won’t accept his shutdown offer

President Donald Trump lit into Democrats — and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in particular — in a Sunday tweetstorm in which he appeared to threaten to increase deportations of undocumented immigrants living in the United States and defended his proposal to end the partial government shutdown.

That offer, which Trump presented Saturday in a White House address, included giving about 1 million immigrants a three-year protection from deportation in exchange for $5.7 billion in funding for a wall along the U.S. southern border. Those immigrants include 700,000 who were brought to the country illegally as children and remain protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and 300,000 who fled their countries and are facing the expiration of their “temporary protected status.”

While Republicans praised the proposal and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pledged to bring it before the full Senate for a vote this week, Democrats panned the deal because it did not ensure permanent protections for those two vulnerable populations and funded a border wall they say is unnecessary. Additionally, some on the far-right complained that the deal amounted to “amnesty” for those 1 million immigrants.

Pelosi said in a Saturday statement that the proposal was “a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total do not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to people’s lives.”

“It is unlikely that any one of these provisions alone would pass the House, and taken together, they are a nonstarter,” she said. “For one thing, this proposal does not include the permanent solution for the Dreamers and TPS recipients that our country needs and supports.”

Nearly 800,000 federal workers are affected by the partial government shutdown, which has gone on for nearly a month and is the longest in U.S. history, with many working without pay or furloughed from their jobs. Federal contractors, not included in that number, are losing about $200 million a day.

Trump also tweeted about his upcoming State of the Union address, which Pelosi suggested he delay or submit in writing on its originally agreed-upon date next week because of security concerns related to the partial government shutdown.

After Pelosi sent Trump a letter last week urging the delay, the president pulled the plug on a military plane that was set to take her and other members of Congress to visit troops in Afghanistan. Trump said lawmakers should remain in Washington in order to negotiate an end to the government shutdown.

On Sunday morning, Trump wrote, “Nancy, I am still thinking about the State of the Union speech, there are so many options — including doing it as per your written offer (made during the Shutdown, security is no problem), and my written acceptance. While a contract is a contract, I’ll get back to you soon!”

Sign Petition: This Man Found and Injured Fox and Stomped on Its Head Until it Died

67,343 SUPPORTERS – 70,000 GOAL

A Spanish hunter is at the center of a worldwide search after video of his despicable behavior came to light.

The video is short, but images from the two-minute clip will likely stay with you for a lifetime. In it, the hunter dressed in outdoor gear and holding his gun comes upon an injured fox hidden in the underbrush. He then grabs the fox — which is missing one of its hind legs — and flings it by the tail into the air. The poor creature goes hurling head over tail across the field before it comes to the ground with a thud.

But that isn’t the end of it.

He then bludgeons it with his gun and stomps on its head trying to crush its skull. When that doesn’t work he grinds the heel of his boot, trying to break its neck or crush its windpipe. No one knows at which point the fox actually died but what is for sure, is that the death it experienced was cruel, heartless and unnecessary. To make matters worse, the poor excuse for a human leaves the dead fox there which suggests that he killed it for no other reason but “fun.”

His actions were so repulsive that even the Royal Spanish Hunting Federation (RFEC) is asking for this man to be punished.

This individual must be found, Spanish authorities must take his vile behavior seriously and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. This person should not be allowed any contact with animals and he definitely should not have a gun.

Please sign the petition and tell Spain’s nature protection agency (SEPRONA) to take this crime seriously, find the perpetrator and bring him to justice.more

Cinder was a 30 lb young black bear in Washington state. In 2014, she miraculously survived severe wildfire burns and won the heart of us humans. Tragically, she was shot and killed almost immediately upon being released back into the wild.

Sign the petition to demand justice for Cinder!

It’s illegal to kill a black bear in Washington state unless you have a license and it’s open season. Whoever killed her probably did not have that because they just left her body there. If a bear gets hurt or killed in self defense, the killer is supposed to notify the authorities. But Cinder’s body was just left to rot instead.

Scientists had hoped her collar had just stopped working because she was hibernating for the winter. That’s why they were so dismayed when they found her skeleton and realized it was because she and her collar had been shot.

Cinder lived through a horrible tragedy and healed, just to be shot by a selfish hunter and left to rot.

It’s heartbreaking that Cinder survived and then died so quickly after being able to return to her home. Please help us honor sweet Cinder by demanding that authorities find Cinder’s killer and hold them accountable!

Petition: Stop Forcing Horses To Run Through Fires – It’s Terrifying And Cruel | Take Action @ The Animal Rescue Site

theanimalrescuesite.greatergood.com
Stop Forcing Horses To Run Through Fires – It’s Terrifying And Cruel | Take Action @ The Animal Rescue Site
Sponsor: The Animal Rescue Site

No ritual or celebration is worth harming innocent horses with a senseless trial by fire.

Las Luminarias is an annual festival in San Bartolome de Pinares, Spain. During the nighttime event, multiple huge bonfires are lit throughout the town. The smoke is thick and engulfing, and the embers naturally spark and sail into the air. Participants douse their horses with water, and then ride them directly through the raging flames of multiple bonfires.

Ironically, the tradition is supposed to purify the horse for the coming year, preventing illness or injury. But the flying embers singe fur and skin[1], fear and pain could easily cause a horse to misstep and come to harm, and inhaling the heavy smoke can damage their lungs.

Though the mayor of San Bartolome claims that the horses “don’t suffer anything at all,” their fear is obvious from the festival photographs[1]. Even if the horses make it through the festival physically unscathed, they experience intense terror when forced to jump through the flames. That terror is ignored as the rider steers the horse to the next fire[2].

Forcing a frightened animal to leap through the flames to “protect” them for the year is a ridiculous superstition and a cruel tradition. Tell the mayor of San Bartolome to end the use of real bonfires during Las Luminarias. If they must continue this tradition, stop terrorizing the horses and use symbolic fire instead.

Sign now to protect the health and welfare of innocent horses!
The Petition:

To: Mayor Maria Jesus Martin Gomez:

The longstanding tradition of Las Luminarias is marred by the cruelty of riding horses through the bonfires lit throughout town. Horses are frightened by fire, and forcing them to leap through the flames is clear animal abuse.

These horses experience psychological trauma directly caused by forcing them to leap through raging bonfires. Las Luminarias needs to be changed to reflect modern times. A cruelty-free festival could easily be accomplished by simply using symbolic fire that doesn’t frighten and singe the horses. I understand the festival has taken place for 500 years, but the world has progressed, and so should the town.

Forcing a horse who is fearful of fire to leap through it for a festival, and exposing their lungs to smoke inhalation and their skin to burns from flying embers, is unacceptable. No tradition is worth harming a fellow creature. Please make the right decision and protect the welfare of the horses in your town.

Your swift action is appreciated!

Sincerely,

According to local press, the bloody, torturous sport of bullfighting could return to Marbella despite being banned three years ago.

The town hall has announced it is setting aside just over €1 million for the refurbishment of the Plaza de Toros with the goal of “making it safe, practicable and operational for its intended use”.

The project has been put out to tender, with companies having until December 30, 2018 to declare their interest.

Please sign this petition to stop the plans of bringing this unfashionable and very shameful blood sport back to Marbella.

The rest of the EU is already viewing Spain as a country with an old-fashioned and very violent culture when it comes to animal rights. People in the whole world are more and more taking a stand, deciding not to travel to Spain because of this. These plans would make it even worse.

Torturing these beautiful, proud animals is certainly not worth 1 million euro and bringing back bullfighting to Marbella would not only be a huge step back regarding animal rights. It would also be a very disgraceful, violent and non-equal contribution to our world.

We don’t want bullfighting or any other blood sports in beautiful Marbella. It’s finally gone and we don’t want it back.

After Trump Blocks Pelosi Trip, Trump Buddy Lindsey Graham Pops Up In Turkey – Art Of The Oil & Gas Con?

Shortly after Trump blocked the now Democrat-led US House delegation trip to visit with NATO, and with US troops in the Middle East, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham popped up in Turkey, meeting with its autocratic leader Erdogan. It appears that the Trump administration, with Lindsey Graham help, is likely swapping oil and gas blocks with Erdogan. They will let Erdogan take over petroleum rich northeast Syria and probably kill the previously US supported Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish led secular mix of people, including Christians. Meanwhile, perhaps Erdogan will stop making offshore oil and gas claims in Cyprus. It was only around October 2015 that Lindsey Graham was bemoaning that Putin-Russia wouldn’t like the cancellation of his pet, dangerous, MOX project. Graham is a radioactive snake in the grass from back yonder.

There’s no such thing as humane classroom dissection—because animals, dead or alive, are never ours to use. They can’t consent to donating their bodies to “science,” and certainly, none of them would be willingly drowned, poisoned, or forced to endure any other kind of horrific and painful death for your classroom activity.

Classroom dissection is an industry, which exists for one thing: money. 💰 That means that the well-being of the animals exploited by it isn’t even a consideration. So, no, workers don’t spend countless hours searching parks and creeks to collect 10 million dead animals each year. If your teachers told you that the animals used for dissection died from natural causes, they’re either misinformed or lying. It’s time for students to rise up and demand better.👊

Cruel dissection-specimen supply companies exist because schools order dead animals for students to cut into. When enough students know the truth and refuse to dissect animals, this cruelty will end—supply can’t persist without demand. Ready to take a stand against animal dissection? It didn’t take long for Nancy Pelosi to open mouth and insert foot. The new Speaker of the House did so by letter this time around, suggesting that Donald Trump either delay the scheduled January 29th State Of The Union Address to Congress because of the partial government shutdown, or give it from the Oval Office, or better yet (in her eyes) just write it out and send it on over.

It was quickly rebuffed by members of both the House and Senate on both sides of the aisle, and the thought that Pelosi had that because of the government shutdown, that they couldn’t provide “enough security” was even walked back by Pelosi herself, almost as soon as she said it.

Why did Pelosis have all of her children and grandchildren – 93 family members going with her on her trip to Egypt, Afghanistan and Brussells? And 7 congress members? Who takes 93 family members (mostly children) on a secret government business trip on military aircraft, paid for by tax payer dollars?

This is How Dairy Affects Your Hormones. Get Ready to #DitchDairy Today!

onegreenplanet.org
By Heather McClees

By now, it’s common knowledge that non-organic cow’s milk is one of the worst choices you can buy at the store due to the excess hormones, antibiotics, steroids, pesticides and who knows what else it all contains. The food industry has tried to mislead us into believing that organic cow’s milk (and its products) comes with pure innocence and is made from cows that graze gracefully and happily in fields all day with the cleanest of air, water, fresh grass and more. Regardless that most none of this is true, cow’s milk is still one of the worst health food choices you can make for many reasons, no matter what kind of cows it comes from. The main reason is for how it affects your hormones.

All cows that produce milk are pregnant, organically raised, fed, etc. or not. It makes no difference that their milk doesn’t have added hormones considering that alone, cow’s milk contains over 60 different hormones without anything being added to it. Now, while all of us have different hormone situations going on, there is no logical research that says we need to take in added hormones from another mammal.

Why Ditching Dairy is Important for Your Hormones:

Cows are pregnant nearly 300 days of the year and Harvard Health shares that the more times a cow has been pregnant during that year, the more hormones she produces through her milk every time. Cows were not made to stay pregnant 300 days of the year and they develop infections due to this high demand for production, not to mention may be subject to further disease and bacteria when antibiotics aren’t used (such as in organic farming practices).

So, what about a cow’s hormones so detrimental to our own health?

Here are some things to consider:

1. Insulin Issues

One of the primary reasons dairy is linked to acne is that it raises insulin in the body. All dairy contains IG1, or insulin-growth factor. It raises our levels of insulin, which causes blood sugar swings that lead to acne. Acne is strongly influenced by hormonal changes, which is one reason so many teenagers struggle during puberty. Why would we put ourselves through that anymore than necessary? No matter what kind of dairy you choose, you’re taking in excess insulin growth like factor. Sadly, it’s promoted as a healthy option for body builders looking to bulk up, but over time, it’s not a healthy choice and will likely cause insulin problems that lead to overeating, sugar cravings, and poor blood sugar control.

2. Mood Swings

Dairy also contains hormones that can lead to mood swings. Estrogen and testosterone are our sex hormones, and when they get out of balance according to our bodies’ needs, we suffer mood swings as a result. Dairy milk promotes excess estrogen in the body due to it containing estrogen from female cows. At the same time, milk naturally contains androgenic properties, so it raises testosterone in the body and can cause bulking quickly. It’s absolutely chock-full of all these hormones we don’t need scurrying throughout bodies. Think about it this way: the dairy you consume contains hormones from the female cow and the male cow that were used during impregnation. That doesn’t sound so healthy or appetizing, now, does it?

Dairy milk accounts for about 80 percent of estrogen consumed through the human diet, along with the fact that milk from pregnant cows (which is how all milk products are produced) contains about 33 times as much estrogen as milk from non-pregnant cows.

Mood swings inarguably happen due to swift hormone fluctuations and women aren’t the only ones to suffer. Men can too, which is one reason dairy isn’t a healthy choice for anyone looking to have a healthier, happy and more stable mood. How about some tastier, much healthier mood foods instead, all hormone-free?

3. Cancer-Causing

The jury is in: milk causes cancer in any form, organic or not. Check this out: Harvard Health studies show that dairy milk and cheese products led to testicular cancer in men ages 20-39 and has been found to affect breast, colon, and prostate cancer heavily as well. And then there’s the casein protein found in milk that has also been linked to cancer. Even without hormones or even lactose, casein is a detrimental protein to our health and should be avoided however possible.

Help Your Hormones: Ditch Dairy

Sadly, the food industry would have you believe you need to consume milk to be healthy, but we know that’s not the case. Quit believing the lies around cow’s milk and have some other calcium-rich options instead, all free of these scary hormones.

If you need a dairy replacement, look to these milk-free alternatives. So Delicious Dairy Free Coconutmilk Creamer is an amazing alternative. This Milkadamia Unsweetened Milk is a great choice. Good Karma Flaxmilk is a new way to enjoy grain-milk. And this Silk Soy Milk Vanilla is a must-have.

Breaking! Three Rangers Arrested On Suspicion Of Rhino Poaching In Kruger National Park, South Africa – World Animal News

By WAN –
January 18, 2019

South African National Parks (SANParks) announced today that three Field Rangers were arrested earlier this week on suspicion of rhino poaching in Kruger National Park (KNP).
The Rangers, who were based at Crocodile Bridge, were apprehended on Tuesday and subsequently held in custody for further investigation.
30-year-old Mr. Lucky Mkansi and 32-year-old Mr. Nzima Joe Sihlangu, appeared in the Skukuza Magistrate Court yesterday. They were released on bail fixed at R10,000 each with strict conditions, which include; not travelling without informing the investigating office, barring them from having contact either physically or by electronic means with rangers, as well as being under 24 hours house arrest.
The third Field Ranger arrested is due to appear at the Bushbuckridge Magistrate Court this afternoon.
“It is always very sad when your own staff become involved in poaching, however, we want to congratulate the SANParks and SAPS investigators for their diligent work in bringing these members to book. Slowly but surely, we are coming to grips with people within our ranks who are sabotaging our efforts in this campaign,” KNP Managing Executive, Glenn Phillips, said in a statement. “We still have confidence in those who are committed and loyal; and would like to encourage them to continue with their excellent work. We will not be deterred in ensuring that we are successful in continuing the fight against the scourge of wildlife crime in KNP.”
SANParks internal disciplinary procedures against the corrupt rangers are also underway.
The arrests were a joint effort by the SANParks Rangers, Environmental Investigation Unit, SAPS and Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
SANParks remains committed to doing everything in its power to fight the scourge of poaching.

Breaking! Animal Cruelty Lawsuit Filed Against The Farmers Inn Roadside Zoo In Pennsylvania – World Animal News

By WAN –

January 16, 2019

The Animal Legal Defense Fund has filed a lawsuit against The Farmers Inn, a roadside zoo in Sigel, Pennsylvania, for maintaining animals in squalid conditions in violation of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and state animal cruelty laws. Many endangered species, along with other animals, are held in grossly deficient conditions at Farmers Inn. These include Queen Louise, a ring-tailed lemur, who despite belonging to a highly social species, is kept alone in a small, filthy cage. Other ESA-protected animals were also found to be confined in cramped cages. These include Russell, a black leopard; Jack and Jill, two black bears; a gray wolf and a hyacinth macaw.

“These animals, including endangered species, are being held in conditions that are not just abhorrent but illegal,” Animal Legal Defense Fund Executive Director Stephen Wells said in a statement. “State and federal animal protection laws exist so that animals won’t be forced to live in these conditions. The animals held at Farmers Inn deserve to be in naturalistic sanctuary environments that allow them to engage in activities natural to their species and necessary for their health.”

Visitors have reported seeing animals at Farmers Inn who are sick and injured. For example, the bears, Jack and Jill, were seen in what appeared to be heat distress on a day where the temperature exceeded 90 degrees. A kinkajou, a small rainforest mammal, was noticed with an injured eye. An emaciated goat, significantly stressed guinea pigs, and foxes suffering from apparently untreated mange were also observed.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund previously sent a 60-day notice of intent to sue, a requirement under the ESA. The organization has also offered assistance in transferring the animals held at Farmers Inn to reputable sanctuaries where their unique needs can be met, and they can thrive. Farmers Inn has thus far not responded to the offer.
As previously reported by WAN, sadly, the problems at Farmers Inn are not unique. Roadside zoos such as Farmers Inn continue to be able to operate due to lack of enforcement of state and federal animal protection laws.

Breaking! American Trophy Hunter Kills Endangered Markhor Goat In Pakistan – World Animal News

By Lauren Lewis –
January 18, 2019

Yet another American trophy hunter proudly standing over an animal that he killed with a boastful smile, clouded eyes, and the misguided conscious of a heartless sub-human who kills innocent animals, including endangered species, for so-called “sport.”
It’s a haunting image, yet tragically familiar.
This week, according to the National Parks of Pakistan Facebook page, one such American hunter, identified by the Pamir Times as Christopher, paid $92,000 for one of four permits allotted by the government of Pakistan to kill a Markhor Goat, the country’s national animal.
Strange, especially since with an estimated population of only 6,000 of these rare goats living in the mountains of Pakistan and Afghanistan, they are supposed to be protected by local and international laws under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
Christopher reportedly hunted, shot and killed the poor animal in the Chitral Region of Pakistan, then displayed his bloodied so-called “trophy” next to him and his team in photos.
As per the post, “Although hunting the markhor is illegal in Pakistan, the government has introduced a scheme which makes the hunt legal. The scheme is known as trophy hunting.”
A hunting trophy license was issued to Christopher after a “proper auction by Peshawar’s wildlife department.” The highest bidder earns the opportunity to hunt one markhor. Without the appalling human conflict, the endangered animals, also known as screw-horn goats, are estimated to live between 10 to 12 years in the wild.
There are reports that permits were also granted to another American trophy hunter who recently killed his fourth markhor, as well as a tourist from New Zealand.
These hunting expeditions are reportedly monitored by village representatives, as well as government officials to ensure that laws are not broken.
What? Ensure that laws are not broken? Remember the part about the “scheme” called trophy hunting!

Images from 2017 and 2018 show polar bears thriving in a warming world

polarbearscience

Candid images of fat, healthy bears taken over the last two years by unbiased photographers across the Arctic are representative of the state of polar bears in a world that’s warmer than it was in 1980.

It may seem counter-intuitive but it’s true: polar bears are thriving with less summer sea ice and there are more bears now than there were in 2005 (not a statistically significant amount more, but more nevertheless).

Do We Care About The Shutdown?

The Lone Cactus

And the answer is….nope.

Well, that’s the long and the short of it. I think Americans get used to stuff happening in their lives pretty darn quickly, and they end up accepting it maybe a little too quickly. That’s the way it is in the government shutdown department.

When the government shut down during Bill Clinton’s administration, public approval of both Congress and Clinton dropped substantially. When the government shut down during Obama’s term, both took a hit, but Congress took almost three times the hit that Obama took. That was because he blamed the Republicans in Congress for the shut down. It didn’t hurt them in the elections however.

Well, the latest results are in. While Donald Trump’s numbers are down about 2%, Congress’ numbers are actually up about 2%. That’s primarily because Democrats are happy that they retook the House of Representatives, and it really has nothing to…

What Trump Just Wrecked by Canceling Pelosi’s Trip to Afghanistan

What Trump Just Wrecked by Canceling Pelosi’s Trip to Afghanistan
Erin Banco, Sam Stein, Lachlan Markay01.17.19 5:11 PM ET
5-7 minutes

For more than three weeks, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her staff had quietly planned an international trip to Brussels and Afghanistan to check in on America’s longest war. Like most congressional delegations—“CODELs”—it was time-consuming work, involving coordination between numerous agencies, stakeholders, and international officials along with extra security briefings because of the danger of the destination.

Pelosi’s chief of staff worked with a liaison from the U.S. Air Force who was the lead in setting up travel arrangements and the itinerary for the trip. Senior officials at the Pentagon also had been read in on the speaker’s plans, especially those regarding her visit to war-torn Afghanistan, where extra security was needed for her time in Kabul. Two senior officials on the ground in Afghanistan said they received the itinerary for the trip, as they do other congressional trips, weeks in advance and held it close to the chest. Fellow members of Congress made similar accommodations as they prepared to accompany the Speaker on the CODEL.

And then, with minutes to go before they departed, President Trump pulled the plug.

“I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed,” Trump wrote in a letter to Pelosi. “We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over.”

“Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative,” Trump wrote.

Trump’s stated reason in cancelling the CODEL was the fact that the government remains shut down. But the more obvious explanation was that the president had been searching for a way to fire back at the speaker after she had informed him that his State of the Union address would be postponed until a resolution on the shutdown was reached.

Left unappreciated by the back and forth was just how impulsive the president’s swift response truly was.

White House officials told CNN that Trump had coordinated with the Department of Defense about the decision to prohibit the use of military aircraft for Pelosi. But as of the time of this publication, staffers in the Pentagon were furiously scrambling to gather information about the cancellation.

“We’re still gathering information just like you,” one Pentagon official told The Daily Beast. “We are trying to figure out what is going on.” One other source inside the Pentagon said that the White House had not coordinated with senior officials in Kabul about the cancellation, either.

The White House did not respond to The Daily Beast’s question on whether or not the president or his team directly contacted the Defense Department and the Air Force about restricting Pelosi or her team’s use of military aircraft, prior to issuing the White House announcement Thursday afternoon. But the president’s team appeared prepared for the moment in other ways.

Within an hour of the White House’s announcement, the Trump campaign was already fundraising off of the tit-for-tat. The Trump Make America Great Again Committee, a joint fundraising account for the campaign and the Republican National Committee, blasted out an email with the subject line “I’m disinvited?”

“Democrats have illegitimately ‘disinvited’ me from making my scheduled and VERY important State of the Union Address,” the email complained. “Americans DEMAND the truth, so we need to make a CLEAR STATEMENT and raise $1,OOO,OOO by Midnight TONIGHT to show your support for Border Security (the REAL security concern).”

Pelosi’s trip was to come during a particularly sensitive geopolitical moment. The Speaker was to stop in Brussels to meet with top NATO commanders amid Trump’s continued criticism of the transcontinental alliance. And she was to visit Afghanistan amid news that the president would significantly drawback U.S. troops from the ground, two source with the U.S. Marines in Kabul said.

Trump is set to roll back close to half of all U.S. troops in Afghanistan, dealing a significant blow to the progress the U.S. has made over the last six months to help broker peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, those same sources said. The administration appointed Zalmay Khalilzad as a U.S. envoy to Afghanistan in September to work solely on negotiations between the two sides.

Troops on the ground viewed the Pelosi trip as a chance to gain an inroad with someone, especially the highest ranking member of the House, in the U.S. government who could see the need to keep U.S. troops in the country. The announcement of the drawback has significantly lowered morale among officials and soldiers.

And Pelosi’s team, too, said it wanted a chance to visit the troops in Afghanistan—where Trump has never been—to understand exactly what was happening on the ground.

“The purpose of the trip was to express appreciation and thanks to our men and women in uniform for their service and dedication, and to obtain critical national security and intelligence briefings from those on the front lines,” Drew Hammill, spokesman for Speaker Pelosi, said.

Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and other Trump officials such as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are supposed to travel to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland this week.

Bad news for this blog

Because of a new EU law, I may have to close down this blog, or at the very least stop posting and probably delete all posts containing a link, which means practically all posts.

Needless to say, I’m extremely displeased.

I’m not even sure I can continue blogging at all.    Even if I only use my WordPress.org blog and post ’ordininary’ blog posts, it may be too complicated to bother. Can I even post photos I’ve taken with my own phone? At this point, nothing is certain. My sister and I may be able to hand code our home pages/blogs like in the old days, and my sister is great at making graphics but again, I’m not sure what is allowed or not.

It may not be strictly necessary for me to post links to newspaper articles or even reblog  other people’s posts, even though I think it’s important…
