Troubling Video Shows Plastic Bag Being Pulled Out Of Sea Turtle – Sea Voice News

Your weekly story of the fight between wildlife and plastic continues here. In yet another incident, an aquarium in South Africa has shared a video on their Facebook page showing them pulling a plastic bag and other trash from a sea turtle’s throat.

In yet another troubling reminder of the hazards that plastic products can pose to marine life, an aquarium in South Africa has shared a video online that shows a plastic bag and other trash being removed from a sea turtle’s throat.

According to Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, the turtle was found washed up on a beach in the town of Struisbaai earlier this month. Showing signs of sickness, the turtle was rushed to the aquarium where veterinarians took a look at the reptile.

According to the aquariums blog page, they suspected a possible lung infection or pneumonia so they started the animal with antibiotics. Over the next couple of days, the team notice the turtle was still becoming weaker. Five days after its arrival, a study was done to investigate if the turtle possible had a blockage.

The video reveals a large piece of black plastic being removed from the animals throat, which was identified to be a plastic bag.

Unfortunately, even after the surgery, the turtle is still in critical condition and the rehabilitation team is monitoring the progress of it.

The oceans are facing a tremendous problem right now in fighting plastic in the ocean. At the current pace, plastic in the ocean is expected to outweigh fish by 2050 and that will only increase exponentially if there is not a plan put in place.

The best bet, stop using plastics. More countries around the World have started to ban plastics in some form but not enough is being done. You can make an immediate impact by choosing items that are not made out of plastic, not using any plastic bags and re-use any item if you have no other choice but purchasing plastic.

National Geographic: Snaring is now the Dominant Threat to Africa’s Lions

The Jaguar

Lions like this female are increasingly falling prey to an indiscriminate killer: snares. Lion Eyes by Jeremy Vandel. CC BY-NC-ND 2.0

I recently read another great story from National Geographic. In it, author Rachel Nuwer and photographer Steve Winter detail the rise of the new dominant threat to African lions: snaring.

I am not going to summarize the story in much detail here, because it would be far better if you read the original. However, as a brief synopsis, people have eaten wild game (bushmeat) in Africa for millennia. Snares are a cheap and effective way to catch game, since they can be constructed from easily-accessible materials and work while the hunter is away.

Unfortunately, snares are also indiscriminate and brutal. They catch any animal that is unlucky enough to walk into them, regardless of which species is being targeted, and often cause horrible injuries and painful deaths. In…

Sign Petition: Demand Change from the Tire Industry to Fight Deforestation

by: Mighty Earth
recipient: Michelin CEO Jean-Dominique Senard and Michelin Executives more

6,119 SUPPORTERS – 7,000 GOAL

Tires are killing our forests. Natural rubber is grown on plantations around the world and 70% of that rubber is used in tires. Unfortunately, without significant changes to the way rubber is harvested, natural forests the world over are in danger. That means no habitat for endangered animals like the tiger, and it means more threat from climate change.

Tire companies, like Michelin, are putting forward a platform that claims to be a global solution to support deforestation-free rubber. The only problem?

They’re not going far enough. Rather than a real, long-term solution, these companies are heading towards greenwashing. We can’t let them get away with it.

That’s why we’re putting pressure on these companies to do more. But we can’t do it alone.

Mighty Earth has launched an international campaign to hold tire companies accountable. Will you join us as we urge these corporations to do more to stop deforestation?

Dear CEO Jean-Dominique Senard and Michelin Executives,

The production of rubber is a growing driver of deforestation across Africa and Southeast Asia. The natural rubber used in tires endangers animals like gibbons and elephants, and forces people off of the lands they’ve lived on for generations. Deforestation also causes massive amounts of carbon emissions and, at a time when urgent action is needed to avoid the worst effects of climate change, corporations must step up to the plate and lead where governments are failing.

Michelin, as one of the largest tire companies in the world, is in a unique position to lead the world into a future where deforestation and natural rubber production are no longer intertwined.

With our climate, vital ecosystems, and human rights at stake, it is essential that the tire industry — as the largest consumer of rubber worldwide — act to address this issue on a global scale. Unfortunately, current attempts by the tire industry to adopt a global platform on sustainable natural rubber leaves key stakeholders, like non-governmental organizations and small-scale farmers, out of the decision-making room. This approach, bolstered by the Tire Industry Project, of which Michelin is a member, threatens progress and would certainly lead to greenwashing and even more destruction.

The time for action is now. Michelin has already demonstrated a commitment to addressing this issue. We urge you to take the next step to ensure this global platform’s success by taking a stand against greenwashing.

Sign Petition: Trump’s Seismic Blasting Plan Will Injure and Kill Thousands of Whales and Dolphins

by: Care2 Team
recipient: Secretary Ryan Zinke, US Department of Interior

66,062 SUPPORTERS – 70,000 GOAL

BREAKING: President Trump just approved seismic blasting off the Atlantic coast that could harm tens of thousands whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals. This is all part of the Trump administration’s plan to open up all U.S. waters to more damaging offshore drilling for oil and gas.

The plan, introduced by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke soon after Trump took office, would radically expand offshore drilling into new areas of the Atlantic, Arctic, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific waters. Specifically, Zinke stated that under a new 5-year plan, over 90 percent of the U.S. coasts would be open to oil drilling by 2019.

Now Trump has taken the first steps towards this environmental catastrophe by authorizing at least five seismic testing companies to use air guns to find oil and gas deposits deep underneath the Atlantic Ocean.

Seismic blasting severely harms marine life, coastal economies, and our public health. Sign the petition telling the Department of Interior NOT to allow dangerous seismic testing off the Atlantic Coast.

As soon as next year, seismic air guns could hammer the Atlantic ocean floor with massive explosions — every ten seconds — that are more than 250 decibels and can heard for miles. These blasts can injure, deafen, and kill thousands of marine mammals like whales, dolphins, and other threatened sea life.

Seismic surveys have not been conducted off the Atlantic Coast for at least 30 years and this new plan is strongly opposed by numerous East Coast lawmakers and governors, who worry it could critically damage the environment and coastal economies. In 2016, President Obama had protected most of the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans from dirty and dangerous offshore drilling — but Trump reversed these protections.

Please take action right now to protect whales, dolphins and other marine life. Sign the petition telling the Department of Interior to end ALL seismic testing off the Atlantic Coast.more

Sign Petition: Sea Lions Are Being Found Shot Dead and Decapitated

by: Care2 Team
recipient: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries (NOAA Fisheries)more

64,962 SUPPORTERS – 65,000 GOAL

Someone is brutally murdering sea lions in the state of Washington, and they must be found now.

Six sea lions were recently found along the Washington coast, each dead from a gunshot wound. Another sea lion was found decapitated. In total, 13 sea lions have been found dead since September, the remaining having died from acute trauma, most likely from forceful interactions with humans.

Please sign this petition demanding that NOAA Fisheries do everything they can to find whoever is responsible for these horrific deaths and file appropriate charges now.

Marine animals, like these sea lions, are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop fishermen from savagely killing these adorable creatures in order to get rid of competition for fish — which authorities believe is the case here. Similar attacks occur each year during the winter months, but sadly, most of the killers are never held accountable.

NOAA Fisheries is investigating these deaths, but we must keep pressure on them to find the killers and file charges now — before they kill again.

Legal Battle Continues; a herd in danger

Wild Horse Education

LLeigh_OutsideMag - 1 (13) Winter Velvet; His herd is in serious danger

(Informal short update on the legal fight against mine approval). Reading list at the bottom of the page.

This summer many of you remember the way we found out about the Canadian Fiore Gold project? It was a bit of a shock after BLM announced an “emergency” that would afford absolutely no transparency of the removal of wild horses in a subset population of Pancake.

We had to engage legally to simply be able to observe wild horses held at temporary, that BLM placed on reservation land (always makes me suspicious and can often indicate some other project where a bit of “cash in pocket” can create a more conducive climate for agreements). Then BLM cancelled the operation and was supposed to notify if it resumed. BLM did not notify. BLM did not create a tour of the Broken Arrow (Indian Lakes)…

One Of The World’s Most Critically Endangered Species, A Snow Leopard, Was Killed After Escaping His Enclosure At The Dudley Zoo In The UK – World Animal News

One Of The World’s Most Critically Endangered Species, A Snow Leopard, Was Killed After Escaping His Enclosure At The Dudley Zoo In The UK
By Lauren Lewis –
December 3, 2018

It is beyond comprehension that one of the last remaining critically endangered species, a snow leopard, was shot dead last week at The Dudley Zoo in West Midlands, UK.
Was there a dangerous escape by the snow leopard? Was the zoo open? Were members of the public on the premises? The answer to the above is an resounding, No!
The fact is that the eight-year-old snow leopard, named Margaash, simply wandered out of his enclosure where he resided after a zookeeper left the door open. It wasn’t the snow leopards fault.
Despite the snow leopard remaining on the premises which was closed at the time and void of visitors, it was somehow decided by zoo staff to kill the animal because, as the zoo claims, “public safety is of uppermost importance.” What about the protection of the animal forced to live in captivity?
Why would the zoo choose to euthanize a critically endangered species instead of tranquilizing it?
Outraged animal advocates are now demanding a thorough investigation of the tragic event that sadly occurred on October 23rd but was not announced by the zoo until November 30th.
“While this is a sad incident that is undoubtedly very distressing to those who cared for Margaash, it brings into sharp focus, once again, that zoos simply cannot guarantee the safety of people and their animals,” Dr. Chris Draper, Born Free’s Head of Animal Welfare & Captivity, said in a statement. “It is perhaps all the more tragic when you consider that Margaash was destined to live and die in captivity, far removed from his natural range and habitat.”
The nonprofit organization addressed that “there will be those who claim that zoos contribute to conservation,” which may, or most-likely may not, be accurate.
Wild Animals Do Not Belong In Confinement Nor Should They Ever Be Used For Profit To Satisfy Human Greed!
Regardless, continued Dr. Draper, “The life and death of a snow leopard at Dudley Zoo should serve to remind us just how we are failing wild animals, both in captivity and in nature.”
In the wild, snow leopards are generally solitary and secretive cats inhabiting mountainous areas of Central Asia, where males have an average home range of 77 square miles: completely incompatible with life in captivity.
According to Defenders of Wildlife, only an estimated 3,500 to 7,000 snow leopards are remaining in the wild, with 600 to 700 held captive at zoos around the world.
Born Free is not only calling for an urgent investigation into this incident, it is advocating for the system of licensing and inspection of zoos to be reviewed and overhauled to prevent a similar tragedy in the future.

26 Squirrel Monkeys That Were Used For FDA Nicotine Research Finally Find A New Home At Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary – World Animal News

26 Squirrel Monkeys That Were Used For FDA Nicotine Research Finally Find A New Home At Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary
By Karen Lane –
December 4, 2018

On the morning of Wednesday, November 14th, Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary (JFPS) welcomed 26 squirrel monkeys to their 50 acre monkey sanctuary in Gainesville, Florida. These monkeys had formerly been used in a terminated nicotine research study conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They were transported to JFPS for retirement, where they will live in as natural a habitat as possible for the remainder of their lives.
The $5.5 million study, which began in 2014, was named “Aspects of Nicotine Self-Administration in a Nonhuman Primate”. The research was to determine how different doses of nicotine affect addiction in adolescents.
Taxpayer watchdog group White Coat Waste Project first discovered the FDA’s nicotine addiction tests on monkeys in the Fall of 2016, and uncovered videos and other details about the experiments using the Freedom of Information Act and a related federal lawsuit.
In September 2017, Dr. Jane Goodall joined the campaign and sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb urging him to cancel the study. In late September 2017, the FDA halted the study. Gottlieb then appointed an independent review team to investigate. This team found that the study was not consistent with the agency’s high animal welfare standards. In January 2018, Gottlieb ended it permanently and announced plans to retire the primates to a sanctuary.
JFPS, the largest New World Primate Sanctuary in the United States, was chosen as the most appropriate sanctuary to retire the monkeys. JFPS, founded in 1997, provides permanent, high-quality sanctuary care for New World monkeys being retired from laboratory research, ex-pets, or monkeys who have been confiscated by the authorities.
JFPS is one of the few primate sanctuaries in the nation who has experience in squirrel monkey care. The 26 squirrel monkeys will enjoy their retirement in neo-tropical natural habitats, as close to their natural wild habitat as possible.
Thankfully these squirrel monkeys no longer have to suffer in a laboratory for human research and can finally live their life in peace.

WAN Exclusive With Marine Animal Rescue Regarding Case of Dolphin Shot In California; $10,000 Reward Offered To Find The Sick Subhuman Who Did It

By Lauren Lewis –
November 19, 2018

The heartbreaking discovery of a dead dolphin that washed up on shore off the coast of Manhattan Beach, California, earlier this month continues to raise questions and demand answers.
Most importantly, who is the pathetic individual responsible for killing the innocent dolphin, and what possesses someone to commit such a horrible act of violence.
WAN talked with Peter Wallerstein of Marine Animal Rescue about the “senseless brutality” of the killing, and a $10,000 reward fund that the nonprofit organization has established to help authorities identify and locate the perpetrator, as well as ensure that justice is served.
“There is no reason for anyone to kill a dolphin, especially this way,” Wallerstein, who discovered the bullet wound, told WAN, further noting that the dolphin otherwise appeared to be in good shape.
A 33-year veteran of rescuing marine animals in and around Los Angeles County, Wallerstein explained that his theory of how the dolphin died was confirmed when Dr. Palmer with the Marine Mammal Care Center in Los Angeles found the bullet inside of the deceased marine mammal.
Wallerstein told WAN that he reported the incident to the National Marine Fisheries law enforcement division, the unit that should be investigating the crime, as dolphins are among the ocean mammals protected under federal law.
Jim Milbury of the National Marine Fisheries West Coast office advised WAN this afternoon that the law enforcement division was aware of the situation, he stated that it is the organization’s policy to not comment on the status of investigations.
Don’t let the tragic death of this sentient being be in vein, other dolphins need our help to ensure that justice is served, and to send a strong message that this type of senseless animal cruelty will not be tolerated or treated lightly.
It is imperative that anyone with information about this case contact the National Marine Fisheries Law Enforcement’s Hotline at (800) 853-1964.
Anyone with a tip should also contact Peter Wallerstein of Marine Animal Rescue at (310) 455-2729.
Marine Animal Rescue, which is offering the reward, will forward relevant information received to the National Marine Fisheries Law Enforcement Division to ensure an investigation into this heinous crime.
Donations to help Marine Animal Rescue save the lives of sick, injured or orphaned marine animals including: whales, seals, sea lions and seabirds, can be made Here!
