Filthy cages, extreme temperatures, maggot-infested food, dirty water, emaciated dogs, and dogs covered in feces. Step into a puppy mill, and that’s the heartbreaking sight you’ll see, according to The Humane Society of the United States’ most recent Horrible Hundred report.

“Puppy mills” or “pet mills” refer to commercial breeders that force animals to continuously produce more and more young to feed the pet trade. Unfortunately, many of the animals end up in shelters and being euthanized.

Despite the horrific conditions in pet mills across the country, only two states – California and Maryland – have banned pet stores from selling puppies and kittens from commercial breeders. That means 48 states still allow these horrible places to exist.

Puppies and kittens don’t deserve this inhumane treatment. We need to take a stand and end this despicable practice now.

Does your state still allow puppy mills? Sign now to demand that it bans puppy mills for good!

petition: Giving Puppy Mills Advance Notice of Inspections Will Let Them Hide Abuse

by: Laura G
target: Bernadette Juarez, deputy administrator of animal care, USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service
47,751 SUPPORTERS – 50,000 GOAL

Instead of surprising puppy mills, research laboratories, zoos and other facilities with animal welfare inspections, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced a pilot program in which it will also conduct announced inspections.

Giving the operators of puppy mills and other facilities advance notice of these inspections will give them plenty of time to hide sick and dying animals, clean up dirty areas and otherwise cover up violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

According to a letter sent to these facilities in April 2018 by the deputy administrator of animal care at the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), which enforces the Animal Welfare Act, one of the benefits of announced inspections is they enable facilities to choose the “optimal hours” to be inspected. How exactly is that beneficial to the welfare of animals?

The USDA needs to continue, as it has done for decades, to only conduct surprise animal welfare inspections of puppy mills, research laboratories, zoos and other facilities. Please sign and share this petition telling the agency to cancel the announced inspections pilot program.

petition: The Trump Administration Wants to Make It Easier to Kill Baby Bears and Wolves

by: Care2 Team
target: United States Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke

61,039 SUPPORTERS – 65,000 GOAL
In Alaska, you might soon be able to teach your children the wonder of the great outdoors by killing helpless bear cubs and wolf pups in their dens or mowing down swimming caribou from the comfort of your own motorboat.

The Trump administration wants to open the door to extreme hunting techniques of some of Alaska’s most iconic animals. The proposal is an attempt to rollback a 2015 Obama administration regulation that banned the same practices.

Besides the horrific caribou slaughtering methods that would be permitted, the rollback would also allow hunters to “lure brown and black bears with bait, hunt black bears and their cubs using artificial lights, […], and use dogs to hunt black bears.”

The park service suggests that loosening hunting restrictions would boost opportunities for “sportsmen” wishing to take advantage of Alaska’s bounty. But, in reality, it is just a disgusting push to make the cruel sport of hunting even more inhumane and barbaric.

Now, the public has 60 days to comment before the final decision is made.

Please sign the petition and tell the Department of the Interior that you don’t want cruel extreme hunting techniques in our federal lands. Speak up now, while there is still time.

For more information about the National Park Service’s proposal or to submit public comments, visit http://www.regulations.gov and search for “RIN 1024-AE38.”

Petition: They Burned the Snake Alive For Fun

by: Care2 Team
target: Onslow County Animal Cruelty officers and Jacksonville Police

21,112 SUPPORTERS – 25,000 GOAL
A group of young men gather around the snake as it tries to escape. They spray some sort of chemical on it, and light it on fire — burning it alive.

The video of the blatant cruelty, filmed at a North Carolina Walmart parking lot, was then posted on Facebook.

Please sign and share the petition to call on local police and animal control officials to investigate and find these men — and charge them with animal cruelty.

It’s unclear if the men accidently came across the snake or if they brought it to the parking lot — but what is clear is the shocking cruel joy they demonstrate in burning a living being alive.

The links between violence to animals and violence to people are clear. Studies have shown those that commit acts of animal abuse like these are much more likely to resort to violence against humans. In fact, between 49% and 71% of women who experienced domestic abuse reported that their abusers also threatened, harmed, and or killed pets or other animals.

These men need to pay for their actions before they escalate these levels of cruelty onto other animals — or to other people. Sign the petition to call on the Onslow County Animal Cruelty officers and Jacksonville Police to find, investigate, and charge these men to the fullest extent of the law.

Florida Teacher Resigns After Making Students Drown Raccoons

After two raccoons killed the chickens Dewie Brewton’s agricultural science class had been raising at Forest High School in Ocala, Florida, the teacher trapped them in wire cages.

Instead of releasing the creatures into the wild or even turning them over to animal control to be humanely euthanized, Brewton filled a trash can with water and forced his students to drown each raccoon during class.

When the raccoons frantically tried to come up for air, the students held them down with metal rods and sprayed their faces with water hoses, the mother of a student who took a disturbing video of the killings told WKMG.

The students also killed an opossum Brewton had caught “just for sport” according to the mother, who didn’t want to be identified. She said her son came home in tears.

As news spread about this horrifying incident, Brewton was suspended with pay. Marion County Public Schools Superintendent Heidi Maier said the school district was appalled and she intended to fire him. “Marion County’s education standards – in fact, Florida’s education standards — do not include activities for the destruction of live animals, nuisance or not,” the school district said in a statement. But before he could be fired, Brewton turned in his resignation. And because he resigned, the Marion County School District is no longer investigating the drownings. Fortunately, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is continuing to do so.

According to FWC regulations, nuisance wildlife can be caught using live traps, but the animals “must be released legally or euthanized humanely within 24 hours of capture.”

There is absolutely nothing humane about having students drown trapped wildlife. The FWC will turn over the findings of its investigation to the state attorney’s office, which will determine whether animal cruelty charges are appropriate. This decision should be a no-brainer.

This is the second case of terrible animal cruelty involving a teacher this year. In March, a junior high school teacher in Idaho fed a puppy to a snapping turtle after school as several students watched. That teacher, Robert Crosland, was placed on administrative leave. The Idaho Attorney General’s Office has taken over the case and will decide whether Crosland should be charged with criminal animal cruelty.

It’s pretty shocking that many students and parents continue to support Crosland, arguing that the heinous thing he did taught students the “circle of life.” Yet there is nothing natural about a snapping turtle eating a puppy. Not only did the puppy die, but the snapping turtle had to be euthanized. What kind of lesson is that?

Similarly, former students of Brewton are supporting him. “We would like to say that we are 100% behind our advisor and everything he does for our children/students,” the Forest High School FFA Alumni group stated on Facebook. “The media is going to make this situation escalate to lengths that are unnecessary and we must stand together and focus on the facts.”

The facts are that three animals were cruelly killed – and it’s also a disturbing fact that the students didn’t refuse to drown them. If not for one caring student who recorded the drownings, the incident might never have even been reported.

Hopefully the agricultural science teacher who replaces Brewton will teach these students the importance of treating animals humanely.

To watch video… caution some will find this extremely upsetting!

Petition:Tell Mattel to Teach Kids Compassion, Not Cruelty

Toy maker Mattel has made strides over the years to stay relevant and become more inclusive, and Barbie has even been a longtime, fur-free animal advocate. But Mattel is taking one giant step away from compassion by selling a Barbie doll that’s riding an elephant.

This toy makes it seem like riding an elephant is fun for all involved, but real-life elephant rides always involve abuse.

Elephants used for rides are often forcibly separated from their mothers as babies, tied down, beaten mercilessly, and gouged with sharp weapons. They’re left injured and traumatized, and some don’t survive. Whether elephants are born into captivity or abducted from the wild, they must be emotionally and mentally broken before they’ll allow humans to climb on their backs.

Tell Mattel to follow its mission to act with integrity and to join the dozens of other companies that have stopped promoting elephant rides.

Petition: Save Bear Cubs by Ending the Spring Bear Hunt in Alberta

Save Bear Cubs by Ending the Spring Bear Hunt in Alberta

by: Care2 Team
target: Alberta Fish and Wildlife

64,640 SUPPORTERS – 65,000 GOAL

A black bear cub in Alberta, Canada has no idea just how lucky he is to be alive.

Earlier this week, a 14-year-old boy was out with a family friend hunting for bears. They were perched high above the forest floor in lookouts that were attached to trees. In a video that has now gone viral, a bear cub that was accompanying his mother decided to take a closer look at the strange contraption that was hanging high above its head. The bear climbed to the height of the lookout, gave the young boy a few sniffs, then lost interest and headed on its way.

Millions of people saw the video and many commented as to how cute they thought the interaction was. But in reality, there is nothing cute about what the hunters were doing.

Hunting bears is cruel in and of itself, but Spring bear season is even worse. During the season, female bears have cubs. If a hunter shoots one of these bear mothers, the cubs would have almost zero chance of survival. They would most likely die of starvation.

While it is illegal to kill a female with cubs, there is no guarantee a hunter will abide by the law, or recognize a mother bear before they’ve pulled the trigger.

Alberta should recognize that the spring bear hunt is cruel and end it right away.

Please sign the petition and ask Alberta Fish and Wildlife to end the Spring bear hunt.

7 Really Gross Reasons To Never Eat Meat Again

care2.com
Editor’s note: This Care2 favorite was originally posted on September 26, 2013.

You know the statistics that eating red meat will take years off your life, and you’ve probably heard of pink slime. If, for some reason, you’re still hesitating, here are seven reasons why you might want to think twice before eating your next steak.
1. Superbugs

Thinking about turkey burgers for dinner tonight? You may want to think again.

A report from the Food and Drug Administration found that, of all the raw ground turkey tested, 81 percent was contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. But ground turkey wasn’t the only problem. These bacteria were found in some 69 percent of pork chops, 55 percent of ground beef and 39 percent of chicken.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are known as superbugs. The use of antibiotics on factory farms, in order to bring animals to slaughter faster or to make up for crowded conditions on feed lots, is one of the reasons why antibiotic resistance is on the rise.

Government data has revealed that one antibiotic-resistant strain of a germ called Enterococcus faecalis, normally found in human and animal intestines, was prevalent in a wide variety of meats. This means that the meat likely came into contact with fecal matter — and that there’s a high likelihood that other antibiotic-resistant bacteria is present too.

How’s that burger looking now?
2. Antibiotics

Antibiotics are used in livestock to make animals grow faster and to prevent disease. Some 29.9 million pounds of antibiotics were sold in 2011 for meat and poultry production — compared with the 7.7 million sold for human use, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts. And that number has been on the rise.

Dr. Gail Hansen, a veterinarian and senior officer for the Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming, believes the use of antibiotics in animals is out of hand:

We feed antibiotics to sick animals, which is completely appropriate, but we also put antibiotics in their feed and in their water to help them grow faster and to compensate for unhygienic conditions. If you have to keep the animals healthy with drugs, I would argue you need to re-examine the system. You don’t take antibiotics preventively when you go out into the world.
3. Cleaning products

School districts and parents had not been aware that some 7 million pounds of meat served up in school cafeterias was coming from scraps swept up from the floor. These meat parts were then sent through a series of machines, which grind them into a paste, separatesout the fat and lace the substance with ammonia to kill bacteria, such as salmonella and E. coli.

The end product, known as pink slime, looked disgusting. And the puffs of ammonia used to kill the bacterium E. coli really grossed everyone out.

It turns out there’s also another cleaning product used in meat production. According to the website MeatPoultry.com, “99 percent of American poultry processors” cool their “birds by immersion in chlorinated water-chiller baths.”

Yum.
4. Meat glue

What you think is a slab of meat, perhaps a filet mignon, often turns out to be comprised of meat scraps held together with something commonly referred to as “meat glue.” Officially known as “transglutaminase,” the product has its origins in the farming industry, when the natural enzyme was harvested from animal blood. Nowadays, it is produced through the fermentation of bacteria.

The FDA has ruled that meat glue is “generally recognized as safe,” and it is required to be listed as one of the ingredients. However, it’s unlikely that any restaurant or banquet hall would list the ingredients of its meat on the menu.

Ever thought of going vegetarian?
5. Chemicals, pesticides and heavy metals

In 2010 the Department of Agriculture’s inspector general condemned the U.S. for allowing meat containing pesticides, heavy metals, veterinary drugs and other chemicals to reach supermarket shelves. That’s because the country’s standards for testing meat for pesticides and chemicals were so lax that, in 2008, Mexico turned back a shipment of American beef because it didn’t meet its standards for copper traces.

How about a veggie burger instead?
6. Hormones

American beef is so heavy in hormones that the European Union has said it doesn’t want the product. The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Veterinary Measures claims that hormone-heavy beef production poses “increased risks of breast cancer and prostate cancer,” citing cancer rates in countries that do and don’t eat U.S. beef. Perhaps you didn’t know that the synthetic hormones zeranol, trenbolone acetate and melengestrol acetate are a routine part of the recipe for production of U.S. beef.
7. Carbon monoxide

Have you ever wondered why those steaks on the supermarket shelf are so red? That’s because as much as 70 percent of meat packages in stores are treated with carbon monoxide to keep the meat’s red color — oxymyoglobin — from turning brown or gray — metmyoglobin — through exposure to oxygen.

According to Ann Boeckman, a lawyer with a firm representing major meat companies, consumers do not need to worry about being deceived. “When a product reaches the point of spoilage, there will be other signs that will be evidenced—for example odor, slime formation and a bulging package—so the product will not smell or look right.”

A building El Niño in 2018 signals more extreme weather for 2019

A building El Niño in 2018 signals more extreme weather for 2019
By Eric Holthaus on May 22, 201811:39 am
4 minutes

In case you couldn’t get enough extreme weather, the next 12 months or so could bring even more scorching temps, punishing droughts, and unstoppable wildfires.

It’s still early, but odds are quickly rising that another El Niño — the periodic warming of the tropical Pacific Ocean — could be forming. The latest official outlook from NOAA and Columbia University gives better-than-even odds of El Niño materializing by the end of this year, which could lead to a cascade of dangerous weather around the globe in 2019.

That’s a troubling development, especially when people worldwide are still suffering from the last El Niño, which ended two years ago.
Dear reader, like what you see here? Keep Grist’s green journalism humming along by supporting us with a donation today. Your gift will help us fight for a planet that doesn’t burn and a future that doesn’t suck. Support Grist

These early warnings come with a caveat: Predictions of El Niño at this time of year are notoriously fickle. If one comes, it’s impossible to know how strong it would be.

When it’s active, El Niño is often a catch-all that’s blamed for all sorts of wild weather, so it’s worth a quick science-based refresher of what we’re talking about here:

El Niño has amazingly far-reaching effects, spurring droughts in Africa and typhoons swirling toward China and Japan. It’s a normal, natural ocean phenomenon, but there’s emerging evidence that climate change is spurring more extreme El Niño-related events.

On average though, El Niño boosts global temperatures and redistributes weather patterns worldwide in a pretty predictable way. In fact, the Red Cross is starting to use its predictability to prevent humanitarian weather catastrophes before they happen.

All told, the the U.N. estimates the 2016 El Niño directly affected nearly 100 million people worldwide, not to mention causing permanent damage to the world’s coral reefs, a surge in carbon dioxide emissions from a global outbreak of forest fires, and the warmest year in recorded history.

In Ethiopia, it spawned one of the worst droughts in decades. More than 8.5 million Ethiopians continue to rely on emergency assistance, according to the UN. That includes some 1.3 million people — a majority of whom are children — who have been forced to migrate from their homes.

Initial estimates show that, if the building El Niño actually arrives, 2019 would stand a good chance at knocking off 2016 as the warmest year on record. With a strong El Niño, next year might even tiptoe across the 1.5 degree-Celsius mark — the first major milestone that locks in at least some of global warming’s worst impacts.

Recently, the United Kingdom’s Met Office — the U.K’s version of the National Weather Service — placed a 10-percent chance of the world passing the 1.5 degree Celsius target before 2022. That target was a key goal of the 2015 Paris climate agreement because a sharp upward spike in temperature that severe, if sustained, would be potentially catastrophic — causing, among other impacts, “fundamental changes in ocean chemistry” that could linger for millennia, according to a draft UN report due out later this year.

Another El Niño is bad news, but it has been inevitable that another one will happen eventually. Knowing exactly when the next one is coming will give those in harm’s way more time to prepare.

Confusing New GMO Labels Help Big Ag, Not Consumers – Chemical Free Life

Confusing New GMO Labels Help Big Ag, Not Consumers – Chemical Free Life
Published by Chemical-Free-Life.org
3-4 minutes

If there was ever a way to assist Big Ag in selling GMO food products, this is it…
USDA Unveils Prototypes For GMO Food Labels, And They’re … Confusing

Foods that contains genetically modified ingredients will soon have a special label.

We recently got the first glimpse of what that label might look like, when the U.S. Department of Agriculture released its proposed guidelines.

This is the product of a decades-long fight between anti-GMO campaigners and Big Agriculture companies, which left neither side completely satisfied…

After Congress passed a bill in 2016 requiring labels on foods containing GMO ingredients, the USDA launched a long process to figure out the specifics.

The result?

Confusion for Consumers

“…they look like a little smiley face. They’re very pro-biotech, cartoonishly so, and to that extent are, you know, not just imparting information but instead are essentially propaganda for the industry.”

-George Kimbrell, legal director for the Center for Food Safety

The letters B-E stand for bioengineered — a term critics say is unfamiliar to the U.S. consumer, compared to more commonly used phrases like genetically engineered or GMO.

“It’s misleading and confusing to consumers to now switch that up and use a totally different term, bioengineered, that has not been the standard commonplace nomenclature for all of this time.”

-George Kimbrell, legal director for the Center for Food Safety

Big Ag Loves the New Labels

…industry representatives such as Nathan Fields, the director of biotechnology and crop inputs at the National Corn Growers Association, say the new “Bioengineered” term provides a clean slate.

The National Corn Growers Association was supportive when Congress passed the mandatory disclosure standards, in part because states such as Vermont were creating their own rules about labeling genetically engineered foods…

More than 90 percent of the corn grown in the U.S. is genetically engineered. Soy, like corn, is also more than 90 percent genetically engineered. That means that the majority of processed foods containing ingredients such as soy, canola oil or corn starch, also contain modified genetic material.

More Obstacles for Consumers to Know What is In Their Food

Polls show that a majority of Americans want to know whether their food is genetically engineered.

…but it is not certain that the USDA will require the label to actually say “bioengineered”…companies could simply use a QR code, a kind of barcode that a phone can scan, to disclose info about the product. Industry professionals say they are clear and easy to use.

But critics say scanning a code would be one more obstacle for people who want to know how their food is made.

“People who aren’t in a place where there’s good wi-fi won’t know if it’s a GMO, and people who don’t use smartphones won’t know if it’s a GMO and also people who are in a hurry won’t know if it’s a GMO.”

-Dr. Glenn Stone, a Washington University in St. Louis anthropology professor who focuses on genetically modified crops

You’re the Key to Preventing Dog Deaths in Hot Cars

You’re the Key to Preventing Dog Deaths in Hot Cars
Posted by credd on May 24, 2017
Rising temperatures call for greater caution:

Never leave your dog in a hot car. Temperatures in a car can rise to 100 degrees—in just minutes—on a 78-degree day.

• Dogs live in fur coats 24/7. They can only pant and sweat through their paws in order to release heat—but that’s not enough to keep them cool in a hot car.
• Cracking the window or parking in the shade will not protect them from heatstroke.
• Dogs can sustain brain damage and can even die within 15 minutes of being trapped in a hot car.
• Heatstroke leads to an agonizing death. Some dogs struggle to escape the vehicle, bloodying their paws, salivating heavily, and often losing control of their bladders.

Remember: It’s an emergency if an animal is confined to a vehicle in hot weather. If you see one, please follow these lifesaving steps:

• Take down the car’s color, model, make, and license-plate number.
• Have the owner paged in nearby stores, and call local humane authorities or the police.
• If the police are unresponsive or take too long to arrive and the dog’s life appears to be in imminent danger, find a witness (or several) who will vouch for your assessment. Take steps to remove the suffering animal, and then wait for the authorities to arrive.

Don’t wait until an animal is in danger. Prevention is key. 🔑🔑🔑

You can help by printing out the sign above and hanging it on your, your friend’s, or your parent’s rearview mirror when the car is parked. Let it serve as a reminder to your loved ones and those walking by never to leave a dog in a hot car.

For over 25 years, Yupik the polar bear has been languishing in Mexico’s sweltering heat at Morelia Zoo in Michoacán. Can you imagine … a polar bear living in Mexico?

This insanely deprived animal spends her days in a barren enclosure with nothing to do. Desperate to get out, she’s chewed on the cage bars so much that she sustained dental trauma. And for years, Morelia Zoo ignored her condition, which led to a serious dental infection.

A veterinarian and bear expert assessed Yupik’s health at the request of Zoocheck and found that she was thin, had poor muscle tone, and suffered from arthritis—conditions that are all likely caused by her restricted environment, poor diet, lack of exercise, and terrible life.

According to the veterinarian, Yupik’s health conditions cannot be addressed in her current environment and a “move to a more natural enclosure in a colder climate would improve her body condition score, allow for natural feeding and foraging behaviors, build her muscle mass, support her joints and reduce her behavioral frustration.”

She was all set to go to a facility better able to meet her needs, but just two weeks before her scheduled move, Morelia Zoo and the governor of Michoacán backed out of an agreement that had been years in the making—dooming Yupik to more of the same suffering and misery that she’s endured for the last quarter of a century.

As Yupik’s legal owner, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has the power—and the responsibility—to step in and ensure that she’s moved to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, where she can get the veterinary care, enrichment, and happy ending that she deserves.

Tell the FWS not to abandon Yupik and to see to it that she’s moved to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, where she can get the care that she desperately needs.

There have been reports of animal neglect at aquariums owned by Vince Covino, the owner of SeaQuest Aquariums. And although he shouldn’t even be allowed near animals if you ask us, a mall in California is letting his company open an aquarium there. 😠

Not only will the animals be confined to tanks that can never compare to their vast ocean homes, some are also set to be subjected to stressful physical encounters with humans.

At another aquarium that he owned with his brother Ammon—which is now closed—more than 200 animals reportedly died over the course of three months, many allegedly from starvation, infections, and other seemingly preventable causes.

Vince was recently fined $5,000 for failing to disclose information to investors, and Ammon has been thrown in prison more than once for violating his probation stemming from his felony wildlife conviction.

Last spring, former SeaQuest employees came forward with reports of animal neglect at the Las Vegas aquarium. One said that he saw “hundreds of animals” die, 😢 and the Metropolitan Police Department issued citations to the aquarium following complaints.

Despite having learned about Vince’s apparent disregard for the law and animal-welfare concerns at his aquariums, Palladio at Broadstone in Folsom, California, still plans to allow him to set up shop there with an aquarium that will feature public interactions that can expose sensitive animals to harassment or harm.
Ask TRI Commercial Property Management, the company that manages the mall, not to allow aquariums at its properties moving forward.

Petition: Teacher Drowns Helpless Raccoons in Front of Students

Teacher Drowns Helpless Raccoons in Front of Students

by: Care2 Team
target: Forest High School officials and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
49,673 SUPPORTERS – 50,000 GOAL

It’s a horrifying act by any standards — and it was all caught on video. An agriculture teacher at a Florida high school took students out of class and showed them how to forcibly drown two helpless raccoons.

The teacher, Dewie Brenton, was reportedly upset that raccoons had been harming chickens the class had been raising. The shocking video shows Brenton dunking a scared raccoon trapped inside a metal cage in a garbage bin filled with water.

This was an exercise in cruelty — plain and simple. Please sign the petition to hold this teacher accountable and have him investigated for his horrific actions.

The video was released to the media after one student showed his mother the upsetting video — saying that Brenton also had the class kill an opossum “for sport.”

The student’s mother told reporters that as the raccoons struggled to survive, Brenton and students “held them down with metal rods. And when the raccoon would try to pop its head up, they held water hoses in its face to drown it.”

According to Florida Fish and Game, raccoons and oppossums are considered “nuisance” animals and can be legally trapped during daylight hours. But they must be released or humanely euthanized. This teacher choose to torture and kill these animals in front of impressionable teenagers — even making students participate in the heartbreaking act.

Sign and share to ask Forest High School officials to fire Mr. Brenton for his cruelty and make sure that nothing like this ever happens again at the school.

Robert Applebaum is a Certified Health Physicist, CHP, Emeritus. Below is Applebaum’s response to an attempt to increase radiation exposure limits, through the US NRC. Currently, the same players, Calabrese et al., appear to be trying to get the US EPA to increase radiation exposure limits. These limits are for the general population, through legal discharges into the environment. They are not for nuclear workers. Calabrese’s group (SARI) delivered a “special pleading” letter to Pruitt in March of 2017 and, in the interim, it was apparently spun and repackaged. In March 2017, Mark Miller, who retired from Sandia National Nuclear Lab, and who has solar panels on his own house, signed the SARI letter-petition to Pruitt. Carol Marcus and Mohan Doss also signed onto the March petition and have commented on the current EPA proposal. All three are mentioned below, along with Calabrese.

Inside the Strange World of Dried Hummingbird Love Charm Trafficking

There’s a witch in San Diego who cast spells to “trap a man” and “dominate him” so he’ll always come back. She has a shop on San Ysidro Boulevard, one mile from the busiest Mexican border crossing into the United States, near pawn shop, liquor store, and a furniture Market, in the Smokenjoy hoolan Lounge, where aDJ music thumps on Friday nights.

But you don’t need to go to a shop for magic – you can join the tens of thousands of watching her on YouTube. Like the wicked Martha Stewart creating potions instead of potpourri, she provides step-by-step instructions for her spells.

“This is the honey jar” she tells viewers while introducing the ingredients on her workbench: photographs of two would – be lovers, a piece of paper with their names written on it three times, a small glass jar and a dead hummingbird. She rolls the tiny animal inside the photographs and wraps the cigar shaped bundle with hot pink yarn nearly the same shade as her long, fake fingernails.

Showing only her arms and lower body on camera, she shields her identity as she swaddles the packages in a sarcophagus of tacky flypaper, Dipset in cinnamon spice, squeeze it into the jar, and spitz it with perfumes and oils – pheromones – “so he’ll stay sexually attracted.” Restless balm “so he’ll be like, oh my God, I need to call her.”  Sleep oil “so he’ll be like a zombie.” Attraction oil “so he’ll be like, ‘Goddamn, you’re so beautiful, you so fine.” Dominating oil “so you’ll dominate his thoughts.”

Petition: Angora Goats Are Being Abused for Fashion, But These Brands Still Use Mohair

Angora Goats Are Being Abused for Fashion, But These Brands Still Use Mohair

by: Care2 Team
target: PVH Corp.

53,647 SUPPORTERS – 55,000 GOAL

That mohair sweater might not feel so good if you know what it took to make it.

South Africa supplies 50 percent of the world’s mohair — the long, silky fibers produced by angora goats. This mohair is highly desired for its luster and sheen as well as the ability to both insulate from the cold winters and wick away moisture in the summers.

Recently, however, an undercover report has sheared bare the mohair industry for what it was. One full of animal abuse violations and needless cruelty.

The exposé revealed footage of workers “dragging goats by the horns and legs and lifting them off the floor by the tail, which could break their spines. Goat kids being shorn for the first time cried out in fear. Afterward, workers threw them across the floor.”

After news broke of the widespread goat abuse, some of the world’s top apparel companies have decided to stop using the fabric in their products. One of the biggest names to do so is Gap Inc.

Care2 wants other apparel giants to follow in their footsteps and take a stand against animal cruelty, inclding giants like PVH Corp. — the parent company of American classics like Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger. In the past, both brands have taken a stand against using fur in their products and now that the word is out that the mohair industry is just as cruel, we think it’s time they cut the fabric from their lines as well.

Please join us in standing up for animal rights and ask PVH Corp. to require its brands to do the same. Sign the petition and ask PVH Corp. to stop using mohair in their brands.

Petition: New York: Make Wildlife Killing Contests Illegal

New York: Make Wildlife Killing Contests Illegal

27,358 SUPPORTERS – 30,000 GOAL
Animal advocates and lawmakers in New York are working to ensure wildlife killing contests never take place in the state again.

These contests, which are also known as drives, derbies, and tournaments, reward people of all ages with cash prizes and weapons, among other things, for killing the biggest and most animals.

While native predators, including coyotes, foxes, and bobcats, are popular targets, many other species continue to become victims of these massacres.

Past events in New York targeting crows and squirrels have sparked outrage, and brought much-needed attention to these senseless events, while a recent undercover investigation released by The Humane Society of the United States has offered a glimpse into the little-seen culture that surrounds these contests and the dangerous, and indifferent attitudes they promote towards wildlife – which is especially troubling when it comes to what they teach children about our relationship with the species we share this earth with.

While some defend these contests as a perfectly reasonable means to deal with ‘pests’ and control predators, they’re ethically and scientifically unjustifiable, and it’s abundantly clear that they’re not about wildlife management or even hunting, but about glorifying the senseless killing of wild animals for amusement and personal gain.

Now, animal advocates and lawmakers are supporting legislation (A.4116a/S.5148a) that will make it illegal to “organize, sponsor, conduct, promote or participate in any contest, competition, tournament, or derby with the objective of taking or hunting wildlife for prizes for other inducement, or for entertainment.”

Please sign and share this petition urging lawmakers in New York to pass legislation that will make these cruel and senseless events illegal.

Satirical ad reveals how to live luxuriously like Scott Pruitt
By Kate Yoder on May 18, 2018
1-2 minutes

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt got ridiculed in front of the nation at a hearing this week, when Senate Democrats took him to task over his excessive spending and alleged ethical missteps.

But that wasn’t enough for the Sierra Club. The environmental group launched a satirical video making fun of Pruitt’s lush life on Friday. The premise of the parody advertisement? That you, too, could live in such a luxurious fashion — as long as you’re cool with doing a little dirty business.

“Looking to plan a luxury vacation to far off places like Australia, Morocco, or Italy? Try Do-it-Pruitt, your one-stop shop for outrageous pay-to-play deals at the Environmental Protection Agency,” the narrator says. “We have a lobbyist ready to make your plane, dinner, and hotel reservations for you — all you have to do is meet with their corporate polluter clients.”

The ad is part of the growing #BootPruitt campaign, the first coordinated effort to kick Pruitt out of office.

Petition: Justice for Suman, the 6-year-old Elephant That Faces a Terrible Fate

Justice for Suman, the 6-year-old Elephant That Faces a Terrible Fate

by: Care2 Team
target: Government of Jaipur

5,048 SUPPORTERS – 10,000 GOAL
Suman never got a chance to be a real elephant. She was born into the notorious Moonlight Circus where elephants like her were forced to do ridiculous tricks to entertain the crowd. But then, it looked like she was saved. Because of Moonlight’s terrible reputation, it was barred from using animals in its performances.

Unfortunately, that isn’t where the story gets better. Suman was then sold to a family known for buying, renting and abusing elephants. When she was only 3 years old she was sent to work on a TV show that was so horrific animal rights activists had it shut down.

Now at 6 years old, Suman’s fate still is uncertain. According to activists the Khan family — Suman’s “owners” plan to train her so she can give rides to tourists. The training process, known as “phajaan,” actually translates to “the crush” during which handlers beat the animal into submission so that it can be docile for the public.

This is not the life that Suman or any other elephant deserves.

Please sign the petition and ask Jaipur officials to rescue Suman and end this terrible treatment of Suman and other elephants owned by the Khan family.

Petition: This Mural Honoring Deported U.S. Veterans Could Be Torn Down

This Mural Honoring Deported U.S. Veterans Could Be Torn Down

10,000 GOAL
In the military, flying an American flag upside down signals distress. It’s a call for help, help from your fellow soldiers and your country in general. In California, along the border between the U.S. and Mexico, a giant upside down flag flies high above passersby’s heads but no one is answering the call.

This particular Star Spangled Banner is a mural, painted along the border structure in 2013 by United States Navy Veteran and artist Amos Gregory to symbolize the plight of deported American vets — those people who bravely served and fought for the United States but were still judged unfit to be called Americans by the U.S. government. According to some estimates, there are hundreds or even thousands of U.S. servicemen and women who have been pushed out of the country.

Now, this symbol of distress is in need of help itself. After President Trump visited the border area to inspect prototypes for the long-promised border wall, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) are threatening to tear down this poignant reminder of the brave heroes that are now relegated to the other side of the border.

This mural has been there for five years and now, after Trump’s visit, CBP is coincidentally considering removing it?

Our deported vets may be gone, but their struggle for citizenship isn’t over and they shouldn’t be forgotten. Please sign the petition and ask CBP not to remove this important border artwork.

This MMA Fighter Trains by Throwing Cats. He Should Be Banned From Competing.

by: Care2 Team
target: International Mixed Martial Arts Federation

56,109 SUPPORTERS – 60,000 GOAL
Albert “Machete” Duraev is the world’s 59th best Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) middleweight but despite his title and muscular physic it seems he would rather pick on helpless little cats.

Earlier this month a video hit the internet showing “Machete” and a friend (also assumed to be an MMA fighter) tossing a grey cat back and forth more than 10 times while “training.”

By the end of this cruel game of feline catch, Duraev, 29 and his fellow cat tosser were throwing the poor cat so far and high that it was wildly doing flips in the air. The whole ordeal looks terrifying and the cat was helpless to do anything to get away.

People are outraged that this bully and his friend could think their actions were funny and harmless. Their behavior isn’t sportsmanlike nor does it represent the values of the MMA – a sport which pits two supposedly equal up against each other to see who is the best fighter.

In a match between a cat and a full grown man, we already know the answer.

The MMA should ban Mr. Duraev and his friend from ever competing in MMA again. If he wants to use violence against a fellow fighter in the ring that is one thing, but using violence against a helpless kitten is another.

Sign the petition and let’s get Albert out of the ring!

Petition: 40,000 Animals Are Neglected, Then Slaughtered for Fur at This Farm

40,000 Animals Are Neglected, Then Slaughtered for Fur at This Farm

by: Care2 Team
target: Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs

42,402 SUPPORTERS – 45,000 GOAL

Millbank Fur Farm — the Ontario, Canada firm that is responsible for supplying pelts to the notoriously cruel fur industry — has just been charged with 14 counts of animal cruelty. The charges, ranging from medical neglect to causing undue distress to the animals in their care come after a recent exposé shined a light on the horrible conditions their minks endure.

Animal rights activists also found several cases of animals with “open, untreated wounds and infections, and documents a lack of adequate and sanitary mink shelters and food.”

What’s even more shocking is the fact that while undercover, activists didn’t see a single veterinarian. Not one single vet at a farm that houses around 40,000 minks.

After the findings came to light, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took action by filing the charges.

It seems like the farm, which clearly has no issue with murdering animals just for their fur, also has no qualms about letting their animals suffer during their short lives.

Ontario officials should have the proof they need to realize this farm is not only raising, but abusing animals. Millbank Fur Farm needs to be shut down.

Please sign the petition and ask the government of Ontario to close Millbank Fur Farm.

Petition: A Caged Tiger Was Used as Decoration for a High School Prom

A Caged Tiger Was Used as Decoration for a High School Prom

68,822 SUPPORTERS – 70,000 GOAL

“Lemurs, foxes and tigers, oh my!”

That’s probably what the seniors of Christopher Columbus High School were saying when they saw animal handlers roll in a menagerie of animals into their jungle-themed prom.

The animal show on wheels included a fox, macaws, and lemurs, but the “honored” guest was a full grown tiger that was rolled out onto the dance floor in a tiny metal cage.

Some prom guests knew instinctively that this was not OK. One student, who took issue with the school’s idea of using animals as mere props for a high school dance, protested by saying, “My mom doesn’t appreciate that she spent $200 for prom and got this type of attraction.”

Her instincts were right. Using animals for people’s entertainment is wrong. Tigers, like other animals, shouldn’t be used for our pleasure in the first place. Using them as tools for our entertainment is cruel and can often end up with the animals being mistreated, abused or even worse. In fact, in at least two tigers used in circuses were killed last year because of their irresponsible owners.

The “Florida licensed facility” that thinks it’s a good idea to be ship tigers around the state to be used as props doesn’t seem like they have their animals best interest in mind. And if anything had gone wrong, it would have been wrong, both people and the tiger could have lost their lives.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) currently allows, companies like the one that provided the tiger, to do so as long as they have proper licensing. This is not OK. The state should not condone the use of animals as props and decorations for proms, circuses or any other type of entertainment.

Please ask FFWCC to discontinue this license and ask the state to ban the use of animals in entertainment!

Petition: Fire Officers Who Intentionally Ran Over Two Loose Dogs

Fire Officers Who Intentionally Ran Over Two Loose Dogs

by: Laura G
target: Paul Tiernan, Chief of Police

22,737 SUPPORTERS – 25,000 GOAL

As witnesses watched in horror, police officers with the Newark Police Department in Delaware got into their patrol car and intentionally ran over a German shepherd and pit bull that were running loose through a commercial area late in the afternoon of May 11.

Both dogs survived being hit by the SUV. The German shepherd was able to run away, but the pit bull wasn’t so lucky. The injured dog was shot multiple times and killed by one of the police officers.

Sign the petition to demand these irresponsible police officers lose their jobs for such animal cruelty.

The Newark Police Department, which is investigating the incident, released a statement the next day that said the dogs “were aggressive towards the officers by sprinting towards the officers, baring their teeth, growling and foaming at the mouth.”

But two witnesses who’d worked at a local SPCA disagreed. They said the German shepherd and pit bull weren’t behaving aggressively – the dogs were simply terrified because police and animal control officers had been yelling at them and chasing them with taser guns for 90 minutes.

According to the Newark Police Department, the decision to use lethal force was made because the dogs were near a highway, open businesses with foot traffic, and residential neighborhoods. But running over the dogs and shooting one of them in a busy area seems much more dangerous to public safety.

There are many humane ways for law enforcement to deal with dogs and other frightened animals. Laws have been passed in Colorado and Texas that require all police officers to receive training in handling stressful situations involving animals. One of the witnesses to the terrible incident in Newark has asked the police department to train its officers as well.

This is a great idea — and the officers who ran over the dogs and then unnecessarily shot one of them should also lose their jobs for these cruel actions. Please sign and share this petition asking for these officers to be fired.
