What do the Ice Core Bubbles Really Tell Us?

Watts Up With That?

Guest Opinion: Dr. Tim Ball

At a recent public presentation titled “Whither the Weather” the most frequently asked question popped up once gain. “How do they know the temperatures from thousands of years ago, as in the Antarctic ice record.” I gave the standard answer about layers of ice, extraction of air from trapped bubbles and then comparison of the Oxygen 16/18 isotope ratio, which varies with atmospheric temperature. As always, people are dazzled by that, and even though they don’t understand, it sounds plausible. The trouble is that every time I give the answer, it triggers my long-term concerns about the nature of glaciers, glacial ice, entrapment of the bubble, and recovery methods of the air in the bubble. I spent hours discussing all aspects of glaciers and ice cores with the late Dr. Fritz Koerner, one of the few people to study glaciers in the Arctic and…

The Endangered Species You Have Never Heard of and May not Care About.

The Extinction Chronicles

The welcome arrival of Volume 7 of the Handbook of Mammals of the World last week, hot off the press, reinforced my view that most animal protectionists and conservationists share a bias in favor of the “charismatic megafauna,” like pandas, whales, apes, and elephants, which precludes knowledge of both just how incredibly diverse the animal kingdom is and how many species are at risk due to the accelerated rates of endangerment and extinction we now see.

The book covers just nine families of rodents. Volume 6 covered the rest, plus the lagomorphs (rabbits, hares, pikas).

Of the 14 species of birch mice, one is endangered, one vulnerable; of 35 species of jerboa, one is vulnerable; of the five species of tree…

Vegan Statistics: Why The Global Rise in Plant-Based Eating Isn’t A Fad

General Mills Invests $17 Million in Vegan Meal Program

Minnesota-based food giant General Mills has announced plans to invest in Urban Remedy, a California-based company specializing in plant-based ready-to-eat meals and cold-pressed juices and drinks.

The $17 million round of Series B funding comes via 301 Inc., the General mill investment group.

“Through retail stores, branded kiosks, and direct-to-consumer delivery, Urban Remedy excels at providing convenient access to organic products,” John Haugen, vice president and general manager of 301 Inc., said in a statement.

General Mills, isn’t new to the natural marketplace. The maker of Cheerios owns several natural channel brands including Annie’s Homegrown, Cascadian Farms, Lärabar, and Muir Glen.

Urban Remedy said the partnership works because of a synergy between the companies.

“Having a partner that’s aligned with us not just on the values of the company but also in the vision of how we want to grow it, [was] huge for us,” said Urban Remedy CEO Paul Coletta. “Money is cheap today, there’s a lot of options out there for great businesses.”

Growth in the plant-based sector is being propelled by mainstream brands like General Mills, Nestlé, and Tyson Food recognizing the opportunities to expand categories and reach a market open to new options better for their health, the planet, and the animals.

Tyson made headlines after it announced in 2016 that it would be investing in Beyond Meat, the Southern California startup making meat products from plants. Beyond Meat is best known for its Beyond Burger that looks, cooks, and tastes like meat.

Nestlé made headlines late last year when it acquired another California company, Sweet Earth Foods, which makes vegan and vegetarian frozen burritos, entrees, seitan, and more.

Urban Remedy is making a name for itself in the Bay Area with refrigerated kiosks located inside select Whole Foods Markets. The branded kiosks sell prepared meals and drinks.

“We’re going to grow really responsibly from here,” Coletta said.

“As long as the consumer is telling us they want, we’re up for the challenge.”

Monarch Migration

A large number of Monarch butterflies have been seen in their migratory funnel in Cape May. N.J. instead of across the Texas-Mexico border. This delayed migration is not normal, and it alarmed monarch researchers across the country. The Cape May stragglers were only a sliver of the record number of monarchs reported in the Northeast in November and December — news that sounded good initially to conservationists. But seeing butterflies so far north so late in the year suggested that few of these latecomers would reach their Mexican wintering grounds. Scientists fear that climate change is behind what they’re calling the latest monarch migration ev er recorded in the eastern United States, and they worry that rising temperatures pose a new threat to a species that saw its population hit record lows in recent years.

Known for their complex, improbable migrations, most monarchs embark on 2,000-mile journeys each…

NASA: Massive Asteroid will zoom near Earth on February 4th – at 76,000 mph

Watts Up With That?

Asteroid 2002 AJ129 will make a close approach to Earth on Feb. 4, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. PST (4:30 p.m. EST / 21:30 UTC). It is expected to be the largest and speediest space object to whiz past the Earth in 2018. The 0.7-mile long body is larger than the tallest building on Earth, Dubai’s half-mile high Burj Khalifa skyscraper will zoom past Earth at 76,000 miles per hour.

At the time of closest approach, the asteroid will be no closer than 10 times the distance between Earth and the Moon (about 2.6 million miles, or 4.2 million kilometers). So, it will miss Earth, as seen in this animation below.

2002 AJ129 is an intermediate-sized near-Earth asteroid, somewhere between 0.3 miles (0.5 kilometers) and 0.75 miles (1.2 kilometers) across. It was discovered on Jan. 15, 2002, by the former NASA-sponsored Near Earth Asteroid Tracking project at the Maui Space Surveillance Site…

Petition · Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Shut down Ryding Regency Slaughterhouse! ·

‘No more silence about the torture of animals.’

Toronto Star published an article on Dec 21 2017 by journalist Linda McQuaig exposing horrific cruelty at Ryding-Regency Meat Packers captured by Len Goldberg, Chris McGinn and Toronto Cow Save activists.

See the complete graphic footage which was shared in the Toronto Star article:

Filming through an open window at the back of the Ryding-Regency slaughterhouse, footage obtained clearly shows a large brown cow thrashing about on the floor, trying to get up, as blood gushes out of a gaping wound on her neck. A black-and-white cow similarly struggles on the floor, while a worker bends over and cuts her throat. Cows hoisted upside down, dangling from one leg, appear to be still conscious with their eye lids opening and closing, while workers tear off the skin from their faces with knives. It is illegal to hoist a conscious cow in Canada. Blood is everywhere.

Dr. Armaiti May, a California-based veterinarian who watched the video, commented: “I was horrified to see fully conscious, alert cows writhing and flailing in agony as the blood drained from their slit throats.”

We demand the government of Canada:

Do the right thing and withdraw Ryding-Regency Meat Packers federal licence and shut them down.
The regulatory agency, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have taken no action to date despite this compelling video. Please call the CFIA on 1-800-442-2342 and ask them to take action or contact them using their feedback form:

What you can do:

You don’t have to wait for the Government to intervene. You can stop these atrocities now by voting with your wallet and BOYCOTTING the animal agriculture industry. STOP supporting this cruelty. Help shut down the most violent places on the planet!
If you live in Toronto, join us for our weekly vigils, Tuesday mornings 9:30am – 12:00pm at Ryding-Regency Meat Packers, 70 Glen Scarlett Road, or email for information about vigils in your area or to start a group.
If you eat cows, you can help by no longer paying for animals to be killed in their infancy: Veal calves are killed at 1-24 weeks, beef cows are killed at 18 months and mother “dairy” cows are killed at around 4 years. Average life expectancy of a cow is 15-20 years. Cows are individuals with personalities. Devoted mother cows bellow frantically for their calves who are snatched away. They mourn their loss for weeks. Switch to a whole foods plant based diet and live cruelty free! Save the animals, the planet and your health. Go to to take the veggie challenge and for more information.

Some African, Haitian, and American Comments On Trump “Vulgar” Remarks on Immigration: It’s Diversionary; Educated Africans Needed At Home To Build Their Countries And More

Mining Awareness +

There were some interesting comments by Africans, a Haitian and some Americans on the VOA article entitled: “Trump’s Vulgar Remarks on Immigration Confirmed by Senator” January 12, 2018, VOA News.

One comment warns us that this is a diversion by Trump: ” Why the decent world is alarmed at the jibe of an indecent man is what am alarmed about. He has never hidden his disdain for, especially, Africa right from his campaign days. All Trump is doing now is diversionary. He wants to divert the world’s attention.” (Abimbola Ishola, January 12, 2018)

Another comment points out the now largely forgotten problem of brain drain. Why aren’t educated Africans staying at home to build their countries? Even more, why do we not hear about the problem of brain drain anymore?

The comment points out that those with 12 years of school, the equivalent of US high school…
