This was a year of extraordinary gains on a wide set of issues, showing the power and reach of The HSUS, Humane Society International, and our affiliates. But along with it came some terrible setbacks at the federal level – with Congress unwinding federal rulesadopted in 2016 and in January 2017 to protect grizzly bears and wolves on national wildlife refuges in Alaska, loss of federal protections for Yellowstone-area grizzly bears, and with the U.S. Department of Agriculture delaying or dissembling rules on horse soring and farm animal protection (the Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices rule).
…A new bill that ties the hands of local law enforcement from assisting federal authorities in any investigation into the illegal killing of Wisconsin’s wild wolf. Wolves are a federally protected endangered species.
According to Wisconsin Gray Wolf Monitoring Report (April 2016 through April 2017) vehicle collisions (39%) and illegal kills (20%) were the leading causes of death for detected mortalities.
Just when you think wolf education & awareness should take precedent, here comes more political rhetoric.
This time it’s in the form of a bill, 2017 Assembly Bill 712, and companion bill SB 602 which would make it illegal for law enforcement to enforce state or federal law relating to management of wolves in Wisconsin. Fringe politicians claim this bill is necessary as wolves are taking over northern Wisconsin. Rep. Adam Jarchow claims wolves are decimating deer and livestock and must be managed (Jarchow’s way of wolf management is…
“Today we put ‘Stupid’ and ‘Lunacy’ on the back burner while we celebrate the upcoming New Year. Our FGS installation is just such a celebration, a N.O. Police horse dancing in the street, loving life and enjoying the moment.
Dance with your ponies today, even if it is only a mental picture, dance with their spirit and set yours free.
With all of us working together, 2018 will be like no other. The horses and donkeys will finally catch their break.
Happy New Year my friends, and the very best of wishes to you and yours. Be safe.” ~ R.T.
A review of the year, as we head for 2018……best wishes for a ‘Happy New Year’ to you and yours.
Ivory Trade
Efforts continue to ripple out to try to curtail commercial ivory trading, stemming from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES) Res. Cof. 10.10:
“RECOMMENDS that all Parties and non-Parties in whose jurisdiction there is a legal domestic market for ivory that is contributing to poaching or illegal trade, take all necessary legislative, regulatory and enforcement measures to close their domestic markets for commercial trade in raw and worked ivory as a matter of urgency.”
As China set out at the start of 2017 to curtail its domestic ivory markets, the demand and satisfaction for Chinese ivory worship has been ‘off-shored’ – Japan and Laos remain defiant to calls to shut their ivory trade, but hopefully will bow to international…
Unlike almost every other major grocery in the U.S., Trader Joe’s still doesn’t have a policy to eliminate gestation crates from a supply chain. Urge Trader Joe’s to take the human road like so many others and commit to a 100% gestation crate free supply chain.

Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean is a distant land of polar bears and whales, northern lights and shining ice. It’s also a nature reserve and one of only two UNESCO Natural Heritage sites in the Arctic. It should be the most peaceful place on Earth, but in the last months this peace has been shattered.

There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true. —Soren Kierkegaard. "...truth is true even if nobody believes it, and falsehood is false even if everybody believes it. That is why truth does not yield to opinion, fashion, numbers, office, or sincerity--it is simply true and that is the end of it" - Os Guinness, Time for Truth, pg.39. “He that takes truth for his guide, and duty for his end, may safely trust to God’s providence to lead him aright.” - Blaise Pascal. "There is but one straight course, and that is to seek truth and pursue it steadily" – George Washington letter to Edmund Randolph — 1795. We live in a “post-truth” world. According to the dictionary, “post-truth” means, “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” Simply put, we now live in a culture that seems to value experience and emotion more than truth. Truth will never go away no matter how hard one might wish. Going beyond the MSM idealogical opinion/bias and their low information tabloid reality show news with a distractional superficial focus on entertainment, sensationalism, emotionalism and activist reporting – this blogs goal is to, in some small way, put a plug in the broken dam of truth and save as many as possible from the consequences—temporal and eternal. "The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it." – George Orwell “There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.” ― Soren Kierkegaard
