BREAKING: Italy Just Voted to Ban All Animal Circus Acts | One Green Planet

Michelle Neff
November 8, 2017

Victory for animals! With one of the biggest circus industries in the world, Italy voted to phase out ALL ANIMALS used in circuses and traveling shows after a recent vote in the Assembly of the Parliament! The exciting news comes on the heels of India recently banning the use of wild animals in circuses, making Italy the 41st country to pass a national law prohibiting animals in circuses.

According to Animal Defenders International (ADI), a leading non-profit animal welfare organization, the rules on how Italy will implement phasing out all animals used in circuses will be set out within one year by a Ministerial decree. This is a huge breakthrough in the fight against circuses that uses animals, considering there are 100 circuses in Italy and an average of 2,000 animals forced to perform silly tricks.

“Travelling from place to place, week after week, using temporary collapsible cages and pens, circuses simply cannot provide for the needs of the animals. Through ADI’s undercover investigations we have shown the violence and abuse that is used to force these animals to obey and perform tricks,” ADI President Jan Creamer said in a press release. ADI has long been a supporter of the end of animals used in entertainment, having released undercover investigations inside animal circuses and championing countries to implement a ban.

Several other countries including Romania, Iran, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, as well as a number of U.S. cities like Los Angeles, New York City, and Portland, Maine have already instated similar legislation that bans the use of wild animals in circuses, showing us that the world as a whole has been making giant strides toward a more humane future.

11/9/17 Ponce’s statue now permanently placed in doggy park
Debbie Taylor Darino
Daytona Beach, FL

Nov 10, 2017 — The statue of Ponce was placed in the doggy park in Ponce Inlet, FL today. In the picture, while waiting to be moved into his spot, he appears to be looking at his final resting place as a reminder of the abuse animals face on a daily basis and he is also the light that leads the way to stricter, harsher punishment for all those that abuse animals. He will forever be in our hearts and he stands tall, strong, and proud as his house bill named Ponce’s Law HB 473 is presently going through the legislative process in hopes to become law. You can follow its progress at myfloridahouse.gov and go under the “bill#” tab and type in 473. We will not stop until this bill is passed.

Breaking News: Nosey the elephant is SAFE!
CompassionWorks International

Nov 10, 2017 — Friends:

We are thrilled to share the amazing news that today an Alabama county took possession of Nosey through court order, and she is being transported to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee pending a future hearing to determine whether she will be permanently seized from the Liebel family.

This is of course an outstanding result and reason to be hopeful about Nosey’s future, though please be mindful that future legal challenges exist to ensure her permanent placement in sanctuary.

As CompassionWorks International learns more, or as there are actions you can take to support the seizure of Nosey, we will continue to update this petition.

Supporting Nosey and other elephants that continue to languish in cruel circus life takes a village!, and we thank you so much for being a part of ours. To continue to support our work to combat circus abuse, please visit cwint.org/donate.

Thank you once again for all of your actions for Nosey, your vigilance in notifying us when you have seen her or any traveling performing animal, and for supporting CWI in our efforts to put an end to circus cruelty once and for all.

For the animals,
Carrie LeBlanc

Animal rights activists and Inuit clash over Canada’s Indigenous food traditions

Exposing the Big Game

https://www.theguardian.com/inequality/2017/nov/01/animal-rights-activists-inuit-clash-canada-indigenous-food-traditions

newly opened restaurant in Toronto sparked heated online debaterecently by revealing that two dishes on its menu would contain seal meat. Kū-kŭm Kitchen, an Indigenous-owned and operated restaurant, was targeted by an online petition which gained more than 6,300 signatures. The petition called for the restaurant to remove seal from its menu, stating that seal hunting is “violent, horrific, traumatizing and unnecessary”.

The controversy again highlighted the often uncomfortable relationship between animal rights and environmental groups and Indigenous communities who are struggling with profound issues of poverty and deprivation.

The work of such activist organisations is crucial in educating the general public through events such as today’s World Vegan Day, and in encouraging government policies that promote a more sustainable future for the planet. But with change…

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.— In response to a lawsuit filed by wildlife advocacy groups, a San Francisco federal court today approved a settlement requiring the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services to implement numerous protections for wildlife in Northern California, including a ban on traps and aerial gunning in designated “wilderness areas.”

Today’s settlement also requires Wildlife Services to analyze the environmental impacts of its killing of coyotes, bobcats and other wildlife in 16 counties in Northern California.

The ironically named Wildlife Services is a multimillion-dollar federal program that uses painful…

Controversy Surrounds Cambodia’s Plan to Reintroduce Tigers

The Jaguar

Panthera tigris corbetti by Joachim S. Müller. CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

The Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti) is considered to be functionally extinct in Cambodia. These cats, which are thought to be the population from which all other tiger subspecies originated, were plentiful in Cambodia as recently as 1999 (Lynam & Nowell, 2011). But no Indochinese tigers have been seen in Cambodia since 2007. The Cambodian government and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) want to change that. However, leading tiger experts fear that their plan is doomed to fail.

The Cambodian government and the WWF are planning to reintroduce tigers to Srepok Wildlife Sanctuary in Mondulkiri Province. Dr. Thomas Gray, the Science Director for the Wildlife Alliance, claims that this area contains excellent tiger habitat. Unfortunately, there are significant roadblocks to tiger recovery in Cambodia.

Tigers became functionally extinct in Cambodia largely due to poaching…

DOLPHINS: JUST AS SMART AS YOU ARE…

Anyone watching David Attenborough’s astounding new Blue Planet 2 series will already have got the strong message that dolphins are smart, sociable, and joyous creatures. Brian Lockwood from Porquoson VA – and recently become an Abaco resident – knows a smart way to get out on the water to watch them at close quarters: a jetski. Here are a few of the outstanding photos he has recently taken of dolphins doing what they love to do, and what humans love them to do.

The hint of a quote in the heading of this post is based on something the inimitable Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart, once claimed: “When I see a dolphin I know it’s just as smart as I am…”.  The only slight problem with this comparative assessment is that there may have been times when the good Captain was…

COWS ARE INTELLIGENT, EMOTIONAL AND THEY HAVE EUREKA MOMENTS—SO SHOULD WE BE KILLING THEM?

Exposing the Big Game

http://www.newsweek.com/cow-cattle-animal-intelligence-science-personalities-emotion-697979

There are brains in the barnyard, according to a literature review published this week about cattle intelligence. The paper summarized a selection of peer-reviewed research that demonstrated bovine cognition, and determined that the animals can have “Eureka” moments, can be optimistic or pessimistic, are affected by painful experiences, protect their calves, and can recognize their friends.

The peer-reviewed paper, called The Psychology of Cows, was published in the journal Animal Behavior and Cognition and was funded by the animal-welfare-education endeavor The Someone Project. The Someone Project describes itself as “Farm Sanctuary’s latest effort to introduce people to who farm animals are.”

The goal of publishing the paper was to improve the general understanding of cow intelligence.

Pollution Kills More People Than Anything Else! #StopAdani #COP23 #Qldvotes

jpratt27

Dying from war, smoking, hunger & natural disasters turns out to be nothing compared to deaths from pollution, which kills nine million people a year.
The most comprehensive report to date on the health effects of environmental pollution shows that filthy air, contaminated water and other polluted parts of our environment kill more people worldwide each year than almost everything else combined – smoking, hunger, natural disasters, war, murder, AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
It’s no wonder then that the number of contaminated water-related deaths in Puerto Rico is expected to climb into the thousands.
In addition to the human tragedy, this pollution costs us well over $4 trillion in annual losses, or 6% of global GDP.

According to the study, 9 million people every year, one in every six premature deaths, are caused by diseases from toxic exposures in the environment.

That’s 20 times more than all wars.

Dr. Philip…

Fighting to stop trophy hunting of lions in the West

Exposing the Big Game

https://blog.humanesociety.org/wayne/2017/11/fighting-stop-trophy-hunting-lions-west.html

by Wayne Pacelle

Trophy hunting organizations and state fish and wildlife agencies are in cahoots in the Southwest in executing ruthless mountain lion killing programs, typically involving radio telemetry equipment, packs of hounds, and rifles and bows they use to shoot lions they’ve driven into trees to kill at point-blank range. The trophy hunters are motivated by bragging rights and taxidermy (they are head hunters, and don’t eat the lions). And the states, in addition to catering to that small subset of hunters and enabling their unsporting methods of killing, view the lions as competitors with human hunters for deer and elk. In their economic calculus, every deer or elk lost to a lion is one less hunting license fee paid to the states, to paraphrase an observation from the esteemed outdoor writer Ted Williams.

But The HSUS and other wildlife protection groups are fighting back, and taking a…

“He that takes truth for his guide, and duty for his end, may safely trust to God’s providence to lead him aright.” - Blaise Pascal. "There is but one straight course, and that is to seek truth and pursue it steadily" – George Washington letter to Edmund Randolph — 1795. We live in a “post-truth” world. According to the dictionary, “post-truth” means, “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” Simply put, we now live in a culture that seems to value experience and emotion more than truth. Truth will never go away no matter how hard one might wish. Going beyond the MSM idealogical opinion/bias and their low information tabloid reality show news with a distractional superficial focus on entertainment, sensationalism, emotionalism and activist reporting – this blogs goal is to, in some small way, put a plug in the broken dam of truth and save as many as possible from the consequences—temporal and eternal. "The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it." – George Orwell “There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.” ― Soren Kierkegaard
