UN Headquarters and USD$1.2 Billion upgrade (And Rising)

The Demise of Christchurch City New Zealand

It appears that the United Nations building has been undergoing an expensive renovation and update – complete with cost over runs.

There seems to be conflicting reports as to the total cost of this project. The title figure comes from Wikipedia.

Below they discuss large figures needed to complete the job.

All World tax payers money of course.

UN building on East River

The UN Headquarters next to the East River New York.

Check it out for yourself!

Surprised there are no docks or jetties planned for the first floor? Maybe they intend to rely on aircraft landing and departing from the roof.

PS: How much sea level acceleration is actually going on?

Fact. Sea level rise caused by the Anthropogenic Global Warming theory can never be a tsunami.  Therefore to attain the catastrophic heights we see predicted we would expect to see an ACCELERATION in the sea level rise record.

The Jaguar

Last Snow Leopard Portrait by Emmanuel Keller (Tambako the Jaguar). CC BY-ND 2.0

When I started this blog I had intended to make it primarily about jaguars. But like so many others, I could not help but be enthralled by snow leopards (Panthera uncia). They are magnificent creatures: perfectly adapted to life in the tallest mountains on Earth. They are also endangered.

Snow leopards naturally live at low densities, because life in the high mountains is hard. Add to that high levels of poaching, deaths from human-wildlife conflicts, increasing damage to mountain landscapes from mining and other extractive industries, and illegal trade in snow leopard body parts – and the situation starts to look grim.

Thankfully the leaders of all 12 snow leopard range countries are meeting in August. They met for the first time in 2013, in order to decide how to reverse the snow leopard’s decline…

The first piece of Trump’s wall is set to go through a Texas wildlife refuge

GarryRogers Nature Conservation

GR: Destroying a nature refuge to satisfy a campaign promise is probably more than Trump’s fellow phobes wanted. But there is no limit to the damage Trump will do to get some approval. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the harm from such a wall. Perhaps we can help some of Trump’s supporters see the truth by sharing this bit of nasty outcome.

An official told the Texas Observer that construction would “essentially destroy the refuge.”

Prof James Hansen warns on sea level rise: Earth could become ‘practically ungovernable’

Earth could become ‘practically ungovernable’ if sea levels keep rising, says former Nasa climate chief http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/earth-sea-levels-rising-nasa-climatechange-chief-jim-hansen-global-warming-melting-ice-antarctica-a7841026.htmlIan Johnston Environment Correspondent, 15 July 17  @montaukian The Earth could become “practically ungovernable” because of sea level rise, Nasa’s former head of climate research, Professor James Hansen, has warned.Professor Hansen, who was among the first scientists to alert politicians and the public to the risks posed by climate change, told New York Magazine that he doubted the atmosphere would warm by four or five degrees Celsius by the end of this century – the upper end of current projections, which would likely end human civilisation as we know it.However he said the biggest problem would be sea level rise. Professor Hanson was an author of a scientific paper published last year which warned that continued high fossil fuel emissions could increase sea levels by “several meters over a timescale of 50…

Stepping Up to Stop Oil and Gas Giveaways

35254674540_396d372b8e_oHi there, I’m Rebecca Fischer (you can call me Becca) and today I’m starting my fourth week on the job at WildEarth Guardians as the organization’s newest Climate Guardian. The focus of my work? Combatting climate change by confronting public lands oil and gas production in the American West and keeping fossil fuels in the ground.

It’s been quite an experience so far.

I’ve already traveled to the Greater Chaco Region of northwestern New Mexico to see firsthand how the oil and gas industry’s relentless push to frack is threatening Chaco Canyon National Historical Park and Navajo communities in the area (and if you haven’t already, check out our interactive map showing how threatened Chaco is by industry’s push to frack >>).

I’ve filed protests to to thwart the Trump administration’s wanton giveaway of our public lands to oil and gas companies.

I’ve also filed Freedom of Information Act…

Canada & Worldwide: Muslim girls being taken abroad for female genital mutilation

“FGM is practised in 29 countries, mainly in Africa, the Middle East, India and other parts of Asia.”

We used to hear that it was only practiced in East Africa. But as it gradually came to light that it was common in many Muslim countries elsewhere, even in some areas of Iran, this had to be revised.

“It is seen by some as a rite of passage into womanhood or a condition of marriage. Though it is not considered an Islamic practice — it predates the religion — for some, it is a religious ritual or requirement and there is tremendous societal pressure placed on families to have it done.”

Not considered an Islamic practice, eh?

“Circumcision is obligatory (for every male and female) (by cutting off the piece of skin on the glans of the penis of the male, but circumcision of the female is by cutting out the…
