How to Help Pets, Other Animals Affected by Louisiana Flooding

Igor Purlantov

1457618487479With thousands of residents displaced across East Baton Rouge Parish and throughout Acadiana by the Louisiana Flood of 2016, there are countless pets and animals likewise in need of supplies and shelter. Some of those pets landed at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center, which is serving as a shelter for thousands of people. Its stalls and rodeo area are now filled with horses, dogs and other animals displaced by the flood. Jodie Summers, a volunteer who’s helping to manage a Facebook page for coordinating relief efforts, told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune photographer Chris Granger that she and others are in desperate need of help and donations.

Ivory Trade in The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom Ivory Trade – Should there be a blanket ban on all ivory trading?

Let’s take a look at the high end of the ‘legal’ antique ivory trade.

Antique Trader Gazette

Figure 1 – Antiques Trade Gazette, No. 2252, “The Great Ivory Debate – Seeing the elephant in the room: both sides of the ivory trade debate,” 26 July 2016

In July 2016, Action for Elephants(Endangered Species Protection Campaigners – Jane Alexandra and Louise Ravula) met with antique industry representatives to “test the perceived role of ivory-based antiques in fuelling demand for modern ivory” (“modern ivory” in this context of course means ivory sourced from elephants post 1989).

Does the continued practice of holding antique ivory in highly elevated esteem perpetuate the desire for ‘modern ivory,’ fuelling demand and the inevitable poaching of present day elephants to meet that nonsensical demand?…

Study says current rate of sea level rise is unprecedented in recent history

Summit County Citizens Voice

‘Our study is for sea level what the now well-confirmed famous ‘hockey stick’ diagram was for global temperature’

As global warming drives rising sea levels and more intense storms, some communities are looking to augment their beaches with "imported" sand. like here on Manasota Key in Englewood, Florida. Staff Report

The global rise of sea level may not be as dramatic or as easily visible as some other signs of global warming like melting glaciers, but it will be one of the most destructive and expensive long-term impacts. With a huge percentage of the world’s population living in coastal regions, society will need to take costly measures to protect people. In some cases, there will no option but to move entire communities away from the rising waters.

While there is still some uncertainty among climate scientists as to the extent of future sea level rise, there is…

“For the dog, it had been love at first sight. He proceeded to settle in at the entrance of Sievers’s hotel. Taking pity on the pup, whom she named Rubio, Sievers gave him an airline blanket to keep warm in at night.

Rubio had found his soul mate — even if Sievers didn’t know it yet.”

An Alternative Sustainable Fertilizer

Organikos

poopstory_hero2 Source: modernfarmer.com

There is no clean way to say this but…sewage sludge might just be the next thing to help grow the produce you consume. A recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition states that thermally conditioned sewage sludge could replace commercial chemical fertilizer as a sustainable option for improving soil properties. The greatest advantage of this alternative fertilizer is that it re-uses essential and finite phosphorus resources, which are commonly sourced from non-renewable phosphate rocks.

Sewage sludge is now a readily available substitute of commercial fertilizers in agriculture due to technological improvements that have increased the phosphorus content of it. Therefore, Andry Andriamananjara from the University of Antananarivo (Madagascar), along with his colleagues, decided to assess its effectiveness using a phosphorus radiotracer technique to measure the availability of phosphorus for plants in thermally conditioned sewage sludge.

‘It looks so fake!’: Adorable ‘googly-eyed’ squid spotted off California coast | WPMT FOX43

CALIFORNIA – A research vessel exploring the ocean off the California coast recently captured footage of a “googly-eyed” Stubby squid, and the video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times since it was posted to YouTube on Friday.

The video was shot by a team from the E/V Nautilus, which uses a remotely operated underwater vehicle to explore the ocean floor.

As the vessel approaches the cephalopod, the team can be heard trying to determine at first whether it is an octopus or cuttlefish.

As the ROV gets closer to the creature, however, the team’s attention quickly shifts to its unusual-looking eyes.

“They look like googly eyes … It looks so fake!” one woman exclaims in the video. “It’s like some little kid dropped their toy.”

Two others in the video comment that the eyes look as though they were painted on.

The team later determined the cephalopod was a Stubby squid — also known as Rossia pacifica — which is closely related to cuttlefish, according to a description of the video posted by the team that captured the footage.

“This species spends life on the seafloor, activating a sticky mucus jacket and burrowing into the sediment to camouflage, leaving their eyes poking out to spot prey like shrimp and small fish.”

Stubby squid live in the Northern Pacific between Japan and Southern California, and are usually spotted at a depth of about 300 meters, though sightings have occurred at much lower depths, according to the page. The one in the video, for example, was located 900 meters below the ocean surface off the coast of California.

The Exploration Vessel Nautilus is a 64-meter research vessel operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust, which is among a number of organizations that funds the Nautilus Exploration Program, according to its website. Other agencies funding the operation include the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and the Office of Naval Research.

Monsanto’s new GMO soybeans are making a hot mess for farmers | Grist

Grist Logo

You can see signs of Monsanto’s latest belly flop in stricken farms: The leaves are gone from the acres of peach trees on Bill Bader’s orchard in southern Missouri, and soy fields in eastern Arkansas and western Tennessee are curling up and dying.

A lot of the blame falls on Monsanto’s new genetically engineered soybean, Xtend, which is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad roll out this year.

To explain what’s happening we have to back up. Farmers have been using crops that tolerate the herbicide glyphosate (often sold under the brand name Roundup), and for years it worked amazingly well: Farmers sprayed glyphosate and the weeds died, while the crops thrived. But then some weeds stopped dying, because nature had caught up; the weeds evolved to tolerate glyphosate.

Seed companies have now released crops that can tolerate additional weed killers, like dicamba. U.S. Monsanto’s new soybean resists both dicamba and glyphosate, which works fine for farmers with the new soybean — not so much for anyone else.

Dicamba easily turns into vapor, so it can blow onto neighbors’ crops, which is exactly what happened to Bill Bader’s peach trees.

The EPA anticipated that this would happen, so it told farmers they had to use a new mixture of dicamba on Xtend — one that wouldn’t blow on the wind. But the EPA hasn’t yet approved that safer dicamba. So when unethical farmers started seeing weeds on their Xtend fields they decided to illicitly spray the conventional dicamba and cross their fingers.

If everyone followed the rules, the new GMOs wouldn’t have caused any problems. But there have always been unethical and careless people and dicamba has been around for decades, so there is something else going on.

The new element here is Monsanto’s Xtend. If the company — or the government — had delayed the rollout until its new herbicide was ready, it would have prevented a lot of heartache.
