Natural Bug Repellents

happy romantic couple outdoorsSummer is a time to get outside and enjoy the garden, go to the park, camping, or the beach. We may even choose to put on a swim suit, shorts, or maybe nothing at all (if you’re a practicing nudist) to enjoy the summer warmth and sun.

midge to drink blood from hand of the personBut there is one pesky creature we have to also worry about, the bugs and insects, and most of them like to attach themselves to our skin. Therefore, out comes the bug repellent.

Poisons or chemicals that you would not ordinarily consume, doesn’t make since to apply them to your skin either. Many bug repellents have such non-eatable chemicals.

They may work at repelling bugs, but your skin is absorbing the repellent as well, and your liver is working hard to metabolize the toxins once they pass the epidermis and enter your blood stream.

The question arises, are there natural bug…

Keep Sick, Suffering Calves Off the Slaughter Line

Action link (Petition) –

Proposed Federal Rule for Non-ambulatory, Disabled Veal Calves

Sponsor: The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

ASPCA Position:  Support.

Action Needed:  Please use the form below to urge FSIS to protect calves from further cruelty by moving forward and issuing this rule as proposed.

Back in 2013, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced its intention to enact a rule banning the slaughter (for veal) of calves who are too sick, injured or weak to stand. The formal language that would turn this from good intention to law has recently been drafted, and the USDA is accepting public comments until mid-July. Please join the ASPCA in supporting this rule.

It’s already illegal to slaughter adult cattle who are in such obviously poor condition, but…

New Zealand Now Recognizes ALL Animals As Sentient Beings!

Tania Marie

This is a huge shift that will hopefully create a domino effect. The article shares:

The Animal Welfare Amendment Bill, passed last month, aims to make it easier to prosecute people in animal cruelty cases, as well as banning animal testing and research, and making all hunting, capture or ill-treatment of any wild animal illegal.

Animal rights activists have celebrated the decision. “To say that animals are sentient is to state explicitly that they can experience both positive and negative emotions, including pain and distress,” said Dr Virginia Williams, chair of the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee. “The explicitness is what is new and marks another step along the animal welfare journey.”

To read more about this “landmark decision” and to review the entire Bill please visit:

Protect Bees

Rantings From a Virtual Soapbox

“If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live.”

The above quotation is attributed to Albert Einstein but it doesn’t really matter who said it does it, the fact is, it’s true. I am not sure about the time line of our demise but man and many other animals would not survive long without bees.

An application to allow oilseed rape growers to use neonicotinoids on oilseed rape crops has been submitted to the UK government. If approved, up to one-third of UK oilseed rape crops could be treated with neonicotinoids despite a European ban. This deadly insecticide is harmful to bees and to humans also.

Here are actions you can take to save bees here in the UK.

Please read the following information from 38 degrees and sign the petition and send the message:

Remembering Cincinnati Freedom: The Legendary Cow Who Escaped a Slaughterhouse | One Green Planet

Life or Lunch?

leadd-1200x691“Escaped Cow Still on the Loose!”; “The World’s Fastest Cow!”; “Cow Becomes Local Hero!”; “Cow to Get Key to the City!” These are just a few of the news headlines that a snow white Charolais cow inspired in 2002 when she took a courageous leap of faith, cleared a 6-foot-high fence at a Cincinnati, Ohio slaughterhouse, and engaged citizens in a dramatic 11-day chase that gained national attention and still has people talking today.

Meet Cincinnati Freedom: The Legendary Cow Who Escaped a Slaughterhouse

As she resisted capture time and again, staying hidden in a park where she foraged and rested when she could, the courageous cow demonstrated an unbendable will, and her tremendous fight for survival resonated with the public. By the time of her capture, she had won the hearts of so many that calls for mercy poured into the city from all over the country. In the end, it was a plea from renowned artist Peter Max…

Watch Misha and Tom, Two Wild-Caught Dolphins, Return To Their Home | Care2 Causes

Life or Lunch?

3142497.largeWhale and dolphin advocates hope a new report chronicling the successful rescue, rehabilitation and release of two captive dolphins will provide a blueprint for others who want to see these animals returned to their rightful home in the wild.

Back to the Blue, a report released by the Born Free Foundation, tracks a two-year project undertaken to save Tom and Misha, two male bottlenose dolphins who were being exploited in substandard conditions in Turkey.

According to Born Free, Tom and Misha were taken from the wild off the coast of Turkey and used to perform and provide ‘swim-with‘ opportunities for tourists. The conditions they were being kept in, consisting of a small dirty swimming pool, led to heavy campaigning by Born Free, a network of local activists and other organizations who were concerned about their welfare and believed they would die soon without intervention.

Restless Earth , Animals Give Advance Notice of Large Earthquakes

Mining Awareness +

Dr. Friedmann Freund is part of a team who recently published an academic paper documenting the reaction of birds and small mammals to changes in the earth in the run-up weeks to a large earthquake in Peru.

He has been researching this topic for some time. NASA discusses his earlier work:
‘RESTLESS EARTH’ MAY GIVE ADVANCE NOTICE OF LARGE EARTHQUAKES Dec. 7, 2001, by John Bluck, NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif. RELEASE: 01-100AR

Signals that come from deep within the Earth eventually may give us a few days’ warning before some large earthquakes, according to a scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center.

The source of these signals lies deep in the Earth’s crust, where forces squeeze rocks to the limit before they rupture catastrophically, shaking the ground with destructive force, according to Friedemann Freund, a scientist at NASA Ames, in California’s Silicon Valley. He will present his…
