“Wolves Meet Big Oil” Cartoon Art Rachel Tilseth

Wolves of Douglas County Wisconsin

”Wolves Meet Oil” Cartoon Art By Rachel Tilseth May 4th 2015

Great Lakes and Wyoming wolves are on the Endangered Species List (ESL) as of December 2014. The ESL not only protects the wolf but also the habitat the wolf lives on. Now this doesn’t sit too well with mining, oil, gas and lumber companies because they can’t get to these resouces as long as wolves are protected. These companies are willing to spend big money to get thier hands on wilderness. They want endangered wildlife out of the way so they can get these resources. They pay lobbyists to get politicians to push anti wolf legislation through congress that calls for delisting of America’s wolves.

Wolves are apex predators that cause a top down effect called trophic cascade and this benefits the entire ecosystem. Wolves save our wild places as long as they are on the ESL.

Taconite Tommy Throws a Hissy Fit and Science Itself Must Pay

Our Wisconsin, Our Wildlife

Photo via Wikimedia Commons. Photo via Wikimedia Commons.

Throughout human history politicians have always used their positions and influence to punish rivals or further their agendas. This is nothing new but in Wisconsin it always has to be taken to more and more lofty extremes to the point of punishing the foundation of science itself.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about how Wisconsin just had to one up the assholes of the nation by sending out lay off notices to 57 Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources employees on Earth Day. These were not just any employees but those that belonged to the science division of the agency. While the anti-science stance of the anti-environment, anti-wolf, anti-everything labeled “progressive” or “liberal,” Walker Administration should not come as a surprise the petty reasons behind these latest cuts are truly disturbing.

According to a news article published today the root of the DNR science cuts…

Seal Hunt 2015

Alexandra´s Animal Awareness Blog

Many of you have probably signed petitions or campaigned against the slaughter of the seals this year. Sadly, this gruesome “tradition” of murdering the youngest seals for their beautiful coats is still being done.

The Humane Society of the United States has given this update:

“This year’s hunt started slowly, with only one quarter as many boats as last year setting out for the ice floes. Unfortunately, within a few days the hunt began, and we began recording.

Although 27,000 seals have been killed so far this year, 42,000 were killed in the same time frame last year — and 77,000 in as many days in 2013. The sealers know that the images we document are shutting their industry down. Often, they simply stop hunting when they see us — our presence saves lives.

This year, the Canadian Sealers Association announced that they are scaling back their sealing operations because…

Your Handy Guide to Attacks on How the Endangered Species Act Uses Science By Michael Halpern

Wolves of Douglas County Wisconsin

Why is the Endangered Species Actsuccessful? Because it is grounded in reliance on the best available science. So let’s look at the different ways that Congress wants to take science out of the equation:

Allow politics to determine whichspecies are deserving of protection. The law is designed to be resilient to politics: science, and science alone, is supposed to determine what species make it on the list. Then other factors can be considered when a plan is put together to conserve a species. But anew bill in the Housewould require economic considerations to be taken into account in listing decisions.

Reduce agency effectiveness by requiringmore study with fewer resources.Given federal budget woes, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) can’t even keep up with its current mandate—scores of speciesare considered

LifeCell: It’s Pretty Bad When a Company Can’t Tell You From Where they Source Their Palm Oil

gettingonmysoapbox

slide1-test

I saw this advertisement on the intertubes.  It piqued my interest but I was concerned about its palm oil code words on the label.  So I wrote my usual death, deforestation and destruction, anti-palm oil email to query them.  In fact I sent them FOUR emails and only received a response when I got hot with righteous indignation.

Here’s their troubling response:

Thanks for writing. I’d be happy to assist you.

I apologize I did not receive your emails.

I believe there is a glitch with the server and management is currently looking into this matter.

I have provided you with all the information that is accessible to me…(Emphasis mine.)

Have a wonderful day and do not hesitate to write again if I can be of more help.

Video of the Day: Activists Disrupt Kim Kardashian’s Book Signing

I’ve been wondering when Animal Activists would go after Kim Kardashian!

The Paw Report

Kim K 3 Activist Jaime Lee disrupting Kim Kardashian’s book signing at Barnes and Noble in NYC.

Kim Kardashian has recently published a book of “selfies,” and was in New York City doing promotional book signing. After waiting in line for hours, a group of activists disrupted the event. Video below:

Kim K 2 Kim’s reaction to the first group of activists.

Curiously, one of the activists involved has publicly spoken out against Direct Action Everywhere (of which I am a part), claiming that disruptions in places where people are eating or purchasing food is ineffective. I’m not really sure what the relevant differences are between places involving food products and other places where animals are being exploited or sold as products, though. I fully support the disruption of any place where animals are being harmed or the notion that animals are ours to be used is perpetuated or normalized. Would I have disrupted this event…
